Chapter 41: Let’s Buy Land
The village was quiet at night, but Yang Xue remained extremely cautious. To avoid being spotted, she stayed in the shadows, dodging and weaving through the paths.
Because three families had lost loved ones in the flood, they had set up makeshift mourning halls. Although the bodies had been buried, the grieving relatives remained awake, keeping watch in the temporary structures.
Yang Xue thought spitefully that it would be better if those mourning halls were at the Old Yang family home—that would mean fewer of them were left alive. She had no idea if Wang Dani was dead or alive. Ideally, regardless of her status, she’d never return. If she died, they’d have to mourn; if she lived… Well, there would certainly be no peace for them.
Slinking through the dark, Yang Xue finally reached the Village Chief’s house. The courtyard gate had already been repaired. She raised her hand and knocked.
Inside, Wei Xiao and Lin Yuansheng had just finished dinner and were sitting in the courtyard to aid digestion. Hearing the knock and assuming it was the Chief’s family returning, Lin Yuansheng got up to open the door.
When the door swung open, he saw Yang Xue standing there with a beaming smile, waving at him. “Hello, Brother Lin! Good evening.”
Lin Yuansheng’s face darkened immediately. This girl! During the day, she had pretended not to know him, yet here she was at night, having the gall to seek him out. And what on earth did “hello” mean?
“What are you doing here? Don’t you ‘not know’ me? What’s the matter? Strangers by day, acquaintances by night?”
Yang Xue immediately played the “innocent” card. “Oh, come on. There were too many people today! I’m just a simple country girl—how could I possibly know someone as handsome and dashing as you, Brother Lin? If I had greeted you, what would people think of the two of us?”
Lin Yuansheng: “…” That sounds logical, yet something feels very wrong. “Wait, you were just selling me herbs. Why are you so afraid of people knowing?”
“Brother Lin, think about it. You buying my herbs shows you have money. Me selling them shows I have money now. In this village, we both need to keep a low profile, you know?”
Lin Yuansheng had a moment of realization. They say “poor mountains and treacherous waters produce rowdy people.” Maybe there were crooks here; caution was indeed necessary. It seemed this girl was actually looking out for them.
“So, you’re here because you need something?”
“Yes, yes! Brother Lin, let me in so we can talk. Are you going to keep me standing at the door? If the villagers see us, you’ll have no choice but to marry me, you know?”
Lin Yuansheng jumped back instantly. “Bah! You little brat, who wants to marry you?”
“Exactly! So let me in, quickly.”
Lin Yuansheng was speechless but stepped aside to let her into the courtyard. Once inside, Yang Xue noticed the other man sitting by a small fire. Up close, she saw that he wasn’t just tall and imposing; his features were quite well-defined and handsome. However, he wasn’t exactly her “type”—she preferred elegant, scholarly youths or gentle, jade-like gentlemen.
“Hello,” Yang Xue greeted. Wei Xiao looked up and gave her a slight nod.
“Alright, speak. What is it?” Lin Yuansheng closed the gate and approached. “Did you find more good herbs?”
Yang Xue snapped her fingers. “Bingo. Another century-old ginseng. Want it?”
Lin Yuansheng was astonished. “Another one? You dug it up on the mountain?” This girl was incredibly lucky. Professional herb gatherers spent all year in the mountains and might not find a single one. How much “dog-luck” did this brat have?
“Yep. Want it? Still twenty tales. Quality guaranteed.”
Lin Yuansheng was tempted; he had wanted to buy more tonics for his master anyway. “Let me see it first.”
Yang Xue pulled a handkerchief from her bosom and slowly unfurled it. “See? I didn’t lie. Is that top-shelf quality or what?”
Lin Yuansheng inspected it. It truly was. This girl was impressive; not only was the quality superb, but she had extracted the root perfectly without damaging the fibers. “Fine. I’ll take it.”
“Ahem…” Wei Xiao coughed twice.
Lin Yuansheng remembered to check in. “Young—Brother Yuan, look, the quality is excellent. We should buy it.”
Yang Xue realized that “Young Master” was the actual decision-maker. She immediately switched her focus to charm him. “Listen, Big Brother, I worked hard to dig this up. If you miss this chance, you won’t find another shop like this. This ginseng has so many benefits! It replenishes vital energy, strengthens the spleen and lungs, promotes fluids, nourishes the blood, and calms the mind. It’s perfect for someone like you.”
Wei Xiao gave a thin, joyless smile. “Perfect for someone like me?”
“Yes, exactly!”
“So, you’re saying I am someone in need of ‘replenishing energy,’ ‘fixing my lungs,’ ‘nourishing my blood,’ and… ‘calming my mind’?”
Yang Xue sensed his mood was turning sour. She gave an awkward laugh. “Heh… I just meant the more, the merrier! It’s good for everyone!”
Lin Yuansheng, perhaps intentionally, chimed in, “Brother Yuan, you really should nourish yourself. Let’s just buy it.”
Wei Xiao: “…”
In the end, Wei Xiao bought the ginseng. As soon as Yang Xue pocketed the money, she turned to skip away, but Lin Yuansheng grabbed her collar. “Wait!”
Yang Xue looked back. “Anything else, Brother Lin?”
“We will keep our mouths shut about this. You had better not mention a single word to anyone else about us.”
Yang Xue nodded. Duh.
After she left, Lin Yuansheng looked at Wei Xiao guiltily. “Young Master, I didn’t expect that a random herb seller would turn out to be from this very village. But it seems she’s even more desperate than us to keep our meeting in town a secret.”
“Didn’t you say she was with her sister?” Wei Xiao asked.
Lin Yuansheng smacked his forehead. What a mess.
“What’s the use of being annoyed now? You were the one trying to greet her earlier today,” Wei Xiao remarked.
“Young Master, I’m sorry.”
“Be more careful from now on.”
…
Yang Xue returned home in high spirits and immediately found Yang Lao San and Qian Yue’e.
“Dad, Mom, let’s buy land!”
Her parents were baffled. She hadn’t mentioned buying land all of yesterday or today. They assumed she wanted to save the money, so they hadn’t pressed her. Why the sudden change of heart after a walk?
They didn’t know that she hadn’t mentioned it because she had already spent the original money. Now that she had “new” funds, she finally felt confident enough to bring it up.
