Chapter 30: Buying Grain; Yang Shuang in Danger
Now that Yang Xue and Yang Shuang had money, they prepared to buy grain.
Rice, which usually cost 20 copper coins per catty, had already doubled in price to 40 coins per catty. Seeing that Yang Xue wanted to buy fine rice, Yang Shuang quickly pulled her back. “Xue’er, let’s just buy brown rice.”
Even though they were rich now, they still needed to be frugal. Their family currently had no house and no land; this money could be used to build a home and buy an acre of land to farm.
Yang Xue, however, had no desire to eat brown rice. “Sister, let’s buy the fine rice. Money is earned to be spent; otherwise, what’s the point of earning it?”
“But we can save that money for the house.”
Yang Xue knew that Yang Shuang was terrified of poverty. Having finally earned some money, her instinct was to clutch it tightly and refuse to spend a single cent. After a moment of thought, Yang Xue leaned in and whispered, “Sister, I had a dream. I dreamt that if we are stingy with the money we earn and keep living such a bitter life, no more money will come to us in the future.”
“Money must flow out for it to flow back in. We shouldn’t be afraid to spend.”
“As for the house money, I promise you, we will earn that later.”
As soon as Yang Shuang heard that being stingy would stop their future earnings, she stopped hesitating immediately. “Buy it! We’re buying fine rice!”
Yang Xue chuckled inwardly. It seemed that whenever she faced a problem, she could use the “I had a dream” excuse to fool them. “Alright, then let’s buy fifty catties of rice and fifty catties of white flour.”
Yang Shuang felt a pang of heartache over the cost, but remembering Yang Xue’s words, she hurriedly said, “Okay, buy it.”
As Yang Xue asked the shopkeeper to weigh the goods, she checked with her sister. “Sister, these fifty-catty loads—can you carry them?”
Yang Xue had been drinking the spirit spring water every day and was full of strength; carrying dozens of catties was no problem for her. She was only worried that Yang Shuang, who looked quite thin and frail, wouldn’t be able to manage.
“Of course I can.” Yang Shuang gave her a look of ‘Who do you think you’re looking down on?’ “Forget fifty catties—even with a hundred catties, I could carry it if I grit my teeth.”
Memories suddenly flooded Yang Xue’s mind—memories of how Wang Dani and the others had abused their family. All the grain harvested from the fields had been carried back to the house by their family. Even at a young age, Yang Shuang had been helping carry the loads. Indeed, fifty catties was nothing to her now.
Once the grain was bought and they stepped out of the shop, Yang Xue suddenly remembered something. “Sister, wait for me here for a moment. I forgot to buy something.”
She set her load down. “Sister, watch the stuff. I’ll be right back.”
Yang Shuang wanted to go with her, but it was inconvenient with the heavy grain, so she stayed behind. “Okay, but be careful.”
“I know!” Yang Xue’s voice drifted back as she hurried away.
Yang Shuang shook her head helplessly. This second sister of hers had truly changed since her brush with death. Before, she would never have been so energetic and impulsive. But this is good, Yang Shuang thought. She finally looks like a person—a living person.
…
Yang Xue wandered around and bought two large back-baskets to make carrying the grain easier. Afterward, she went to buy some meat and vegetables. Eating wild herbs every day was unbearable, no matter how much one liked them—especially since they were boiled in plain water without oil or salt.
“Right, oil and salt.”
Yang Xue walked back into the grain shop. Her ultimate goal was actually to buy more staples. The shopkeeper, seeing her return, was very hospitable. “Miss, what else can I get for you?”
Yang Xue leaned in. “Shopkeeper, I’d like to discuss something with you.”
The shopkeeper looked at her suspiciously. “What is it?”
“Something good.”
At the mention of something “good,” the shopkeeper beamed. “Well, let’s hear it then.”
“Shopkeeper, we actually wanted to buy more rice and flour, but as you saw, we’re just two sisters and we can’t carry it all. If I buy a large amount, could you help deliver it?”
“How much are you talking about?”
Yang Xue thought for a bit. “A thousand catties. Five hundred catties each of rice and flour.”
This was a major deal. Many people were waiting for prices to drop before buying, so the shopkeeper was delighted to find someone buying so much now. “If you take a thousand catties, I can arrange a delivery for you.”
“Thank you. But I have one more request.”
“What is it?”
“Can you deliver it at night? Just to the entrance of Nair Village.” Seeing the shopkeeper’s confusion, she explained, “I’m sure you’ve heard Nair Village was hit by the flood. The men are busy rebuilding houses during the day and don’t have time to move grain, which is why I need it delivered at night.”
The shopkeeper understood. “Fair enough. I’ll have someone bring it tonight.”
Yang Xue paid the deposit and bought some oil and salt before heading back toward Yang Shuang.
…
Unbeknownst to Yang Xue, Yang Shuang was currently in a dire situation.
Not long after Yang Xue had left, Yang Shuang had been targeted. A woman had been watching her for a while, and seeing her alone, a devious plan formed.
She lunged at Yang Shuang, grabbing her hand before the girl could react. Yang Shuang was terrified. The woman began dragging her away, shouting and cursing: “You wretched girl! I sent you out to buy things and here you are playing around! Who’s going to take care of the house? Get back home right now!”
Yang Shuang had never encountered such a situation and was stunned with fear. “Auntie, you have the wrong person! Let me go!”
“Pah! I’d know you even if you turned to ash! Move! If you keep dawdling, I’ll have my son break your legs when we get home!”
“Help! Help!” Yang Shuang screamed, struggling with all her might.
Fortunately, Yang Shuang had spent years doing hard labor and was quite strong; the woman couldn’t easily drag her away. Since they were on a busy street, the commotion immediately attracted attention. However, although people heard her cries for help, many hesitated to step in.
They weren’t sure of the situation. If this was just a family dispute, intervening would be considered meddling in someone else’s business—and meddlers rarely come to a good end. Consequently, for a long moment, no one came forward to help Yang Shuang.
