Chapter 29: Making Money
The man hadn’t expected a young village girl like Yang Xue to be carrying so many valuable items.
“Wild ginseng?”
“Mhm. Do you want it?”
The man thought for a moment and nodded. “Alright, let me see it.”
Yang Xue didn’t rush to take out the ginseng. Instead, she scanned the surroundings and said to him, “This doesn’t seem like the right place for a transaction, does it? Why don’t we find somewhere else?”
“After all, we are just two weak girls. If I take the goods out and you decide you don’t want them, and someone nearby happens to spot us, what then?”
The man didn’t argue; he found her reasoning sound. Although there were few pedestrians where they stood, it didn’t mean they were alone. If he gave these two young girls money only for them to be targeted and robbed immediately, it would be a tragedy.
“Fine. Follow me.”
Yang Xue pulled Yang Shuang along, but Yang Shuang hesitated. “Xue’er, should we really go with this man? What if…”
Yang Xue understood her sister’s tension and caution. She patted Yang Shuang’s hand reassuringly and gave a gentle smile. “Sister, it’s fine. Let’s go.”
Yang Xue could tell the man genuinely wanted the medicine and didn’t seem like an evildoer. Besides, you can’t make money without taking a few risks.
“Sister, you can just wait for me at the door in a bit.”
But Yang Shuang wasn’t at ease. “I’d better go inside with you.”
As they spoke, the man walked into a courtyard surrounded by high walls and urged them from the doorway: “Hurry up.” He was in a rush to use the medicine.
“Coming!” Yang Xue pulled Yang Shuang along. “It’s fine, we’ll go in together.” With Yang Xue holding her hand, Yang Shuang’s anxiety lessened slightly.
The man led them into the yard but did not close the gate, likely having noticed Yang Shuang’s unease. Yang Xue felt a surge of goodwill toward him for this gesture.
Once the three of them were seated, Yang Xue introduced herself: “My name is Yang Xue, and this is my sister Yang Shuang. How may we address you, brother?”
“Lin. Lin Yuansheng.”
“Alright, Brother Lin. I have about a quarter-kilogram of Huangjing here.” She then produced the wild ginseng. “I mainly came today to sell this. Take a look.”
Lin Yuansheng didn’t look at the ginseng first; instead, he asked for the Huangjing. Yang Xue didn’t dally and handed it over.
Lin Yuansheng weighed it in his hand. “About 100 grams. Normally it’s 10 copper coins per 50 grams. At double the price, I’ll give you 40 coins.”
Yang Xue nodded. “Deal!”
Yang Shuang remained silent, but her wide eyes betrayed her inner shock and joy. Although this “Huangjing” wasn’t the “Gold” she had imagined, it was still incredibly valuable. That tiny amount had sold for 40 coins! She knew that fine rice usually cost 20 coins per kilogram; this stuff was actually more expensive than rice.
Having secured the Huangjing, Lin Yuansheng breathed a sigh of relief before picking up the wild ginseng.
“Did you dig this wild ginseng up on the mountain yourself?”
Yang Xue nodded. “Yes. Is there a problem?”
“No, I just find the quality to be exceptionally high. This ginseng looks to be about a hundred years old. Normally, it would go for about 16 taels of silver. But because the appearance is truly excellent and you solved my urgent problem today, I’ll give you an even 20 taels.”
Yang Xue was stunned—not by the price, but by the age of the ginseng. They had only grown the stuff in their laboratory for about three years. How did it suddenly become a hundred-year-old root?
After the initial shock, she realized it must be the doing of her “Space.” If that were the case, she could build a blue-brick mansion just by relying on the things in her lab. She was now a “secret” rich woman!
Upon hearing the price of 20 taels, Yang Shuang quickly covered her mouth with her hands to keep from screaming out loud.
“Deal.”
“Wait here, I’ll go get the money for you.” Lin Yuansheng handed the herbs to a passing servant and went to fetch the silver.
As soon as he left, Yang Shuang grabbed Yang Xue’s hand excitedly, whispering as low as she could: “Xue’er, did you hear? Twenty tales!”
“Mhm, I heard.”
After the excitement cooled, Yang Shuang voiced her confusion. “Xue’er, where did that Huangjing come from? You never mentioned it.”
Yang Xue remained calm. “I dug it up in the woods yesterday. I was so excited after finding the ginseng that I forgot all about it. I only remembered just now when I heard Brother Lin’s words at the clinic.”
“How do you even recognize Huangjing?”
Yang Xue stayed consistent: “Sister, have you forgotten I can dream? I saw it in a dream, of course. Someone in the dream told me this stuff could be sold for money, so I knew.”
“Oh, right.” Yang Shuang nodded, then looked around. “Xue’er, you must never let anyone else know about your prophetic dreams.”
“I know.”
Soon, Lin Yuansheng returned and handed the money to Yang Xue. “Twenty taels and forty copper coins. Keep it safe.”
Yang Xue took it and thanked him. “Thank you, Brother Lin.”
Lin Yuansheng, who was in his early twenties, felt quite pleased being called “Brother” by her. “Since you’re calling me brother, if you find any more ginseng or similar herbs in the future, you can bring them to me. Don’t bother going anywhere else, or you might get cheated.”
Yang Xue narrowed her eyes with a smile. “Will do!”
…
After the sisters left, Lin Yuansheng entered a room. “Young Master, I’ve sent someone to brew the medicine. It should be ready soon.”
Following Lin Yuansheng’s gaze, one could see a gentle, elegant young man sitting at a table with an open book, reading intently. Hearing Lin Yuansheng, he replied, “Good. Thank you for your hard work.”
But as soon as he spoke, Lin Zhiyuan broke into a violent fit of coughing.
“Young Master, if we had set out even a little later, you wouldn’t have fallen ill.”
“It’s no matter.”
“Sigh… Young Master, I’ve asked around. Nair Village was the hardest hit by the disaster. I expect we won’t even have a place to stay when we get there. We might as well stay in town a few more days.”
“It’s alright. It’s a good time to go back and help Elder Uncle rebuild the village.”
Lin Yuansheng looked helpless. “Young Master, you should nurse yourself back to health before worrying about anything else.”
Lin Zhiyuan smiled. “Fine, I understand. I’ll make sure I’m healthy before we head to Niaor Village, alright?”
Lin Yuansheng nodded. “By the way, Young Master, when I was buying the herbs just now, I bought a wild ginseng root as well. The quality is quite good; it’ll be perfect for nourishing your body.”
Lin Zhiyuan nodded. “Very well.”
