Chapter 16: The Lab Building and Experimental Fields
Yang Xue saw that they had all started getting busy and no one was paying attention to her, so she quietly ducked into a nearby thicket. She then took out the items she had stolen from the old Yang family residence from her space.
After taking everything out, Yang Xue dragged them out into the open and called out to Yang the Third: “Father, come over and help me carry these things.”
Hearing Yang Xue’s call, Yang the Third immediately walked quickly toward her.
The items only weighed several dozen pounds, which Yang Xue could easily carry herself, but she had to maintain her image of having a weak constitution. Thus, she had no choice but to feign weakness and ask Yang the Third for help.
Yang the Third thought Yang Xue had spotted something in the woods, but as he drew closer, he saw grain, an earthenware pot, a wood-cutting machete, a basket of eggs…
“This…” Yang the Third looked at Yang Xue in astonishment.
Yang Xue gave a slight smile, but her words nearly scared Yang the Third to death: “The things from the old house—I stole them.”
“You… you… you stole them?”
Yang Xue nodded. “Yes, I stole them.”
“Xue-ya, you were too reckless! If your Grandpa and Grandma found out, they would beat you to death.”
“They won’t find out. I stole the things last night and already hid them on the mountain. They said I stole the things, but did you see? Were they able to find anything on me?”
“No! So what is there to be afraid of?”
“You went up the mountain alone last night? Did you run into any danger? How could you sneak up here alone at night? You should have told me.”
“Father, I’m fine. I just thought that since I was alone, it would be harder to be spotted, so I didn’t call you.”
Yang Xue thought Yang the Third would scold her or lecture her on the morality of stealing from the family.
To her surprise, Yang the Third’s first reaction was concern. This made Yang Xue feel deeply comforted.
What Yang Xue didn’t know was that to Yang the Third, it didn’t really matter if the old family’s things were stolen, what was taken, or who took them. Regardless, those things would never have ended up in his hands anyway.
He was indeed shocked that Yang Xue had been the thief, but he didn’t feel she was in the wrong.
Yang the Third might be cowardly and useless in the eyes of the old Yang family, but that didn’t mean he didn’t harbor resentment. Since thoughts are private, no one knew that he actually felt a great deal of bitterness. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have agreed to split the family the moment Yang Xue encouraged him.
“Xue-ya, if you need to do anything in the future, you can ask me for help. I won’t hold you back, I swear.”
“Alright, I’ll let you know if I need anything later.”
Yang the Third nodded and sighed inwardly. He knew that after walking through the gates of hell, Yang Xue’s mindset had changed. But he hadn’t expected such a drastic transformation. He wasn’t sure if this was a good or bad thing for her.
The two of them carried the supplies back. They had chosen a spot halfway up the mountain, a small natural cave that could accommodate their family of six for sleeping, while they could cook outside. Furthermore, the terrain here was relatively level and surrounded by tall trees; if they encountered wolves, tigers, or leopards, they would have a better chance of escape.
In general, as long as they didn’t venture into the deep, primordial forests or intentionally provoke wild beasts, they should be relatively safe.
When they reached the cave entrance, Qian Yue’e happened to be returning with a bundle of dry grass. Seeing the cloth sack in Yang the Third’s hand, she was surprised: “Husband, what are you carrying?”
Yang the Third glanced at Yang Xue before saying to Qian Yue’e, “This is stuff Xue-ya brought out from the old house.”
Qian Yue’e looked and saw dozens of pounds of grain. She was instantly shocked: “This… aren’t these the things Father and Mother mentioned today? Xue’er, you…”
Yang Xue nodded: “Mhm, I took them.”
“Xue’er, that was too risky. If… if you had been caught…”
Knowing what Qian Yue’e wanted to say, Yang Xue interrupted with a smile: “Mother, I’m fine. I knew what I was doing.”
“Mother, hurry and finish laying out the bedding. I want to lie down for a bit.” Yang Xue didn’t want Qian Yue’e to dwell on the issue, so she quickly redirected her attention.
Hearing that Yang Xue wanted to lie down, Qian Yue’e assumed she was exhausted from the climb. Since Yang Xue was already weak, she must be worn out.
“Right, right. Mother will lay it out now. Just wait a moment.”
“Mhm.”
Soon, Qian Yue’e had prepared a small area and called Yang Xue inside to rest. Yang Xue didn’t stand on ceremony; she went in and lay down leisurely on the dry grass.
Ever since she transmigrated, she had been acting non-stop, and it had truly exhausted her.
Seeing Yang Xue lie down, Qian Yue’e quietly walked back outside.
In this environment, Yang Xue couldn’t fall asleep immediately. Lying on the dry grass, she just felt uncomfortable.
“Sigh~ Forget it. Since I can’t sleep anyway, I might as well go check out the space.”
Yang Xue was glad that entering space didn’t cause her physical body to disappear. Only her spirit entered, and to outsiders, it simply looked like she was sleeping. If her body vanished every time she entered, she would have to sneak around looking for a deserted spot like a thief. That would be too tiring.
Upon entering the space, Yang Xue suddenly noticed that a previously foggy area had cleared. In its place stood a three-story building.
Yang Xue narrowed her eyes. This building looked very familiar.
“Holy crap! Isn’t this our academy’s seed experimental base? It actually appeared in space?”
Seeing the seed lab building, a flash of inspiration hit her: “Oh my god, did my experimental fields follow me too?”
With this thought, Yang Xue excitedly ran toward the farmland.
Sure enough, just as she expected, her experimental fields were right there.
Yang Xue’s work mainly involved the hybridization of vegetables and fruits: snack cucumbers, strawberry-tomatoes, watermelon-radishes, and so on. Once these hybrid varieties were grown, they could serve as both vegetables and fruits. When eaten, the flavor was twice as good.
“Wow, if I knew you guys were coming with me, I would have applied for a few more plots of land.”
After touring her experimental fields, Yang Xue was very satisfied. The growth was promising; everything was ripe and just waiting to be harvested.
There was still plenty of undeveloped land in the space. Yang Xue planned to slowly cultivate it when she had time. As for what to plant, she hadn’t decided yet. She had plenty of time to figure it out later.
The original fruit trees in the space were still laden with fruit. Looking at the bright red produce made her mouth water. Yang Xue picked a few peaches and munched on them as she walked into the lab building.
When she exited the space, Yang Xue thought a lot of time must have passed, but Yang the Third was still at the entrance whittling wood.
It seemed that the time inside the space and the time outside were not synchronized. She had stayed inside for over an hour, yet only about two or three minutes had passed in the outside world.
