- Chapter 20 - Are You a Sweet and Delicious Omega?
“Who did he say he was having test his food?”
“Oh, if I’m not mistaken, is he asking His Majesty the Witch Emperor to be his poison tester?”
“Seriously, this is too awkward. He’s telling the Witch Emperor to his face that he’s been ‘blessed’ by the Witch Emperor, and now he’s making him test for poison?”
In front of the crystal ball, the Black Dragon and the Black Cat gasped in unison, glancing at each other: “He is so brave.”
Inside the cabin, a brief silence fell.
Jayne pointed his finger directly at the figure in the black cloak. A-Wu and barked, “You, old thing. Come here and test this for poison.”
Old. Thing.
Again?
Bai Rui clearly heard the sound of a neck twisting under the cloak, followed by the crisp crack of bone and muscle.
He tilted his head slightly and saw the hem of A-Wu’s hood shift. Those thin lips were pulled tight, and the definition of his jaw muscles became prominent.
He wasn’t sure if A-Wu was angry, but the air in the room seemed to drop by two degrees. A frail Annamese pirate nearby even hugged his shoulders and gave a slight shiver.
The spectators in front of the crystal ball were already hyperventilating.
“He’s really doing it again??”
“He called the Witch Emperor an ‘old thing’? How many times is that now?”
“Truly fearless!”
“Doesn’t he know our Emperor hates it most when people bring up his age? He’s got a death wish.”
“Technically, His Majesty is very young. Because of that major incident long ago, he was placed in a ten thousand years slumber by an ancient ritual. He was only recently awakened, no one knows by whom. His Majesty said he just felt a pain in his heart and woke up.”
“Exactly! Our Lord is strictly in his early twenties. But according to the old wizards, even during his sleep in the ice coffin, he seemed restless. There was always a sense of consciousness, sighs could be heard echoing through the Ice Badger Castle. It must have been so painful.”
“Damn it, the outsiders all say our Lord is tens of thousands of years old. Who could endure that insult?”
“This is our Lord’s berserk button. That pirate is finished!”
The pirate captain, who was very much “finished” but entirely unaware of it, continued to throw his weight around.
“What are you stalling for! Get over here!”
His dark finger pointed at a plate of tooth achingly sweet mashed potatoes: “You eat this.”
“And don’t you dare touch anything else!”
Since more than half of the delicacies had been ruined, only three dishes remained on the table. Pirates sailing the high seas often suffered from vitamin deficiencies, so they avoided fried, heavy foods, or items containing caffeine and excessive sugar. This plate of “Coffee Hot Cocoa Mashed Potatoes” was practically toxic in their eyes. None of the pirates wanted to touch it, and they didn’t want to waste the “good” food on a prisoner, so they assigned A-Wu to test this specific mess.
The black cloak stirred without a breeze, the hem swirling.
At that moment, A-Wu’s sleeve was gently tugged.
It was light at first, then gained a bit of strength, yet remained tender.
The hood of the cloak hid the furrowed brow of Witch Emperor Qi Li. He turned his head and, from the lower edge of his hood, saw a hand as white and fine as jade. The fingers were lightly pinching his sleeve, pulling.
The gesture was full of hesitation, almost cautious.
But without any rhyme or reason, that simple action instantly soothed Qi Li’s rising fury.
The fingers were beautiful and pale, tugging at his sleeve like a soft feather, yet they effectively caused the gathering storm of magical energy to dissipate in a heartbeat.
The audience outside wide eyed: “Wait, that’s it? It’s over?”
“Where’s the rage? He’s just… not mad anymore?”
“Look at that! He’s hooked. I can see it, he can’t even press down the corners of his mouth.”
Just as they saw, the Witch Emperor was not only not angry, but he also cooperated perfectly. He tucked his hands into his sleeves, hunched his shoulders again, and slowly shuffled toward the table.
“Fine, fine…” He even put on a fake, strained voice. “I’ll be the one to test it.”
Before his hand could even emerge from his sleeve, he heard Bai Rui’s voice from behind: “Let me feed you.”
A-Wu’s silhouette didn’t react much or rather, covered by the cloak, no reaction could be seen.
He just stood there silently, waiting. When he heard Bai Rui’s footsteps approaching, the smile at the corners of his lips deepened.
“Respected Captain, please allow me to do this.”
Bai Rui nodded politely to Captain Jayne, his slender fingers picking up a spoon.
“You’ve suffered following me all this time, and now I’ve brought you out to be tossed about at sea.”
He scooped a generous spoonful of the sickeningly sweet mashed potatoes and held it to A-Wu’s thin lips.
A-Wu had a beautiful mouth. The upper lip was slightly thicker than the lower, with a well-defined philtrum and a pale color, likely due to his fair skin, making the light hue look elegant.
In that moment, Bai Rui’s mind even wandered. It’s quite pretty. Looks like it would feel very soft.
As the sugary mashed potatoes hovered at his lips, the thin mouth curved into a smirk. “How could I dare trouble you to feed me? You are my master, after all.”
Bai Rui lifted the spoon slightly, as if coaxing a puppy, lacking only the clicking sounds of his tongue.
“I haven’t exactly given you a good life. Have some sweets to feel better.”
A-Wu parted his lips slightly and lightly caught the spoon. He didn’t let go immediately. Like a puppy, his teeth grazed the spoon, a smile blooming on his lips.
Bai Rui held the spoon, unable to pull it back. He looked up at A-Wu’s lips.
For no reason at all, the gland at the back of his neck felt a sudden spark of heat.
How could I, in the past, get a racing heart just by looking at someone’s lips?
Probably… Merfolk are all beautiful. His lips look soft and moist, his teeth are white, and he has those two pretty little canines.
After a pause, Bai Rui forcibly suppressed his erratic heartbeat: “Let go.”
A-Wu was still smiling. With the hood covering down to his nose, only those smiling lips and bared teeth were visible, dazzlingly bright.
The Adam’s apple on Bai Rui’s fair neck bobbed slightly. He frowned. “Still not letting go?”
A-Wu grinned, then pressed his lips around the spoon, sliding the cloying coffee cocoa mashed potatoes into his mouth. The way he ate the dessert was… suggestive, to say the least. Even through the hood, Bai Rui felt like A-Wu was watching him with a burning, intense gaze that made his own face feel hot.
“Acting so devoted, I see.”
Captain Jayne’s cold sneer broke the atmosphere, followed by a world shaking statement.
“Heh.”
“Are you two really master and servant?”
Bai Rui’s fingers froze on the spoon. The mashed potatoes suddenly felt heavy. He slowly placed the utensil back on the table, trying to be polite, but his heart was pounding so hard that for the first time, he missed his mark, and the spoon hit the plate with a loud clatter.
His fingers stiffened. Then, Bai Rui carefully repositioned the spoon before looking up. “Respected Captain, do you have any basis for your suspicion?”
“I need a basis??”
Captain Jayne acted as if he’d heard the funniest joke in the world. He laughed uproariously for a long time, then pointed to his ear.
“Trying to fool me? I’ve heard the rumors. You two are mother and daughter. Everyone in Hanoi knows. After you, ‘Batella,’ became the Sheriff’s mistress, this old thing applied to be your servant. You mother-daughter duo are just after the wealth of those high and mighty nobles, and then you kill those idiots. So, Miss Batella, you must be very wealthy, aren’t you?”
Oh… so he thinks we’re mother and daughter… Is that all…
Bai Rui felt an inexplicable wave of relief.
Captain Jayne naturally didn’t care about the details. His small eyes flickered with the cunning glint of a hungry wolf as he looked at Bai Rui with ill intent. “Now, my dear Miss Batella, your wealth and your person both belong to me.”
“So, after we disembark, you will lead me to your hidden treasure. If you do, I won’t kill you or your old hag of a mother. Understand?”
Hearing this, the tension in Bai Rui’s face slowly relaxed.
He smiled faintly. His refined, exquisite features, partially veiled by the black mesh of his hat, looked even more dangerously alluring.
He knew he was handsome. Usually, he disliked contact and rejected advances, so he didn’t realize that this single look at Captain Jayne made almost every pirate in the cabin freeze in their tracks.
Bai Rui lowered his eyes and smiled, neither confirming nor denying. He turned to A-Wu as if no one else was there: “Want more?”
The dessert was indeed fragrant and sweet; the rich texture melting on the tongue provided a sense of enjoyment.
A-Wu seemed to be in a good mood, completely ignoring the noisy background noise.
He shook his head.
Bai Rui chuckled softly: “Is it good?”
A-Wu nodded, finally swallowing the sugary mashed potatoes. “It’s good. Make it for me again in the future.”
The smile at the corners of Bai Rui’s mouth deepened. “Okay.”
He pulled out a handkerchief, one that carried his own sweet, fresh scent and wiped the residue of the dessert from the corners of A-Wu’s mouth.
Under the hood, A-Wu’s eyebrows twitched, but since he was covered, Bai Rui didn’t see it.
After finishing this, Bai Rui turned back to Captain Jayne.
He gave a respectful bow. “Respected Captain, now that the dessert is finished, next, I will feed him the grouper and…”
The remaining two dishes emitted a savory aroma that made one’s mouth water just by looking at them.
As Bai Rui spoke, he had already picked up the knife and fork, preparing to feed A-Wu again.
Captain Jayne’s eyes were glued to the food. The remaining two dishes looked exquisite and delicious, constantly tempting his stomach. He swallowed hard. Just as Bai Rui’s fork was about to slice off a large piece of grouper, the Captain reached out to stop him.
“Wait a minute!”
He barked. Bai Rui’s hand stopped instantly.
“What is it, Captain?”
Captain Jayne swallowed again, a very clear, loud gulp.
“I don’t need the rest tested. It’s not even enough to fill the gaps in my teeth. How much more do you want to give that old servant? There’s only one grouper on this whole ship.”
“Very well.”
Bai Rui followed orders smoothly, putting down the utensils and stepping back to stand side by side with A-Wu.
“Please enjoy your meal, Captain.”
Before he could even finish his sentence, Captain Jayne lunged forward and began devouring the food like a beast.
The cabin was stiflingly hot. These Annamese sailors likely didn’t care much for hygiene, a faint smell of sour, rotting wood lingered in the air.
Bai Rui hated it. He leaned closer to A-Wu, finding that the cold, clean fragrance surrounding the man made him feel a bit better.
For some reason, he seemed to be becoming increasingly dependent on the cold scent coming from A-Wu.
A-Wu paused and turned his head toward Bai Rui, catching a glimpse of his profile.
It was a perfect, beautiful line. His nose wasn’t exceptionally high but was very straight. From this angle, his slightly recessed eye sockets gave him a look of pure clarity. Especially those round apricot eyes, with their natural hint of watery red at the corners, it was impossible to look away.
He smelled very good. It seemed he smelled even sweeter than when they first met.
A-Wu closed his eyes and sniffed carefully, suddenly dazed.
Abruptly, his own cold pheromones surged like a violent river, crashing against his nerves.
But he held back. If he, an Alpha, released his pheromones now, everyone in this cabin would likely feel the urge to kneel. But Bai Rui… why did his scent make his usually well-suppressed pheromones so restless?
Was Bai Rui… about to…?
As the person in question, Bai Rui had no idea what A-Wu was thinking.
He just felt very dizzy. Standing next to A-Wu helped him feel steady.
Ever since he had crossed into this world, he had felt unwell.
He had frequent bouts of dizziness and occasional low fevers. He didn’t know what was wrong with him.
In his original world, he was a Beta with no pheromones. Here, he was an Omega with a defective gland, which essentially meant he had no pheromones, so he had never experienced a heat cycle.
After another wave of dizziness hit, he simply attributed it to being seasick.
Watching Captain Jayne eat with such grotesque ferocity, Bai Rui touched his forehead. “Respected Captain, the waves are quite strong today. Please enjoy your meal. I shall return first.”
Captain Jayne was buried in his food and didn’t spare him a glance.
The one eyed pirate stepped forward, intending to lead Bai Rui back to the lower deck.
Just then, Captain Jayne tossed aside his bowl and chopsticks, having licked the plate clean and cast a sinister gaze at Bai Rui’s back. “Wait a moment, Miss Batella.”
Bai Rui froze. His toes were just inches away from the sunlight spilling into the cabin. He was one step away from escaping this foul, stinking room.
Captain Jayne let out a cold laugh and took a deep, exaggerated breath of the air.
“So fragrant.”
“My dear Miss Batella, I don’t believe I’ve asked you before.”
“Are you a sweet and delicious Omega?”
