- Chapter 18 - Lying Comes with a Price
Sea breeze carried the foam of the waves, crashing against the ship’s gunwale.
The pirate ship battered and leaped amidst the waves, swaying precariously like a stray leaf in the wind.
Bai Rui’s waist was encircled. Waves crashed against A-wu’s broad shoulders, leaving a space shielded from the spray, ensuring that even the hem of Bai Rui’s clothes didn’t get wet.
So strong, yet he claimed to be afraid.
The position he had applied for was “guard”, given this combat power, Bai Rui had truly picked up the right person.
Bai Rui narrowed his eyes and casually rested his hand on A-wu’s shoulder.
The two stood in a pose resembling a waltz, though they were currently dodging a storm.
“Nice moves. Who exactly are you?”
After bringing A-wu out of the water dungeon, Bai Rui had intended to just leave it at that. He hadn’t expected that, after some twists and turns, they would end up on the same boat.
And this A-wu clearly wasn’t simple.
The corners of A-wu’s thin lips curled slightly. He stood steadily while several pirates behind them were tossed around like a chaotic background blur.
“I am a pitiful person, just like Your Highness.”
Bai Rui stared at the black hood, his gaze eventually falling on the beautifully shaped thin lips.
“Oh? You’re like me?”
Bai Rui was clearly lying to the pirates about being a “pitiful exile,” but if A-wu was “just like him,” then things were becoming much more complicated.
Interesting.
A-wu paused and laughed: “Of course. My life is like an ant’s, no one has ever truly cared for me.”
“I am not as noble as Your Highness. Naturally, I am a pitiful person. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been locked in a dungeon by the evil God Emperor of Sorcery, only to be rescued upon meeting Your Highness.”
The howling sea wind swept across the ship in bursts, violently tearing the sails taut.
The ship shot forward like an arrow released from a bow.
Faintly, the roar of the pirate captain could be heard: “Hurry!! Cut the sails!!”
A wave crashed down, and all screams were instantly smothered by the water.
Inky black clouds pressed down overhead, the impending storm carrying a force that could destroy everything in its path.
“Damn it, there was no warning at all! Why is there a storm now!”
“The stars looked fine last night. The ocean is too terrifying.”
While the Wind Plains continent was suffering from a drought, the world on the sea felt like a completely separate, fractured reality.
The shrieking gale tore apart everyone’s cries, leaving only the roar of the ocean.
Sailors climbed the masts to cut the sails, but several were blown off by the wind before they could even raise their knives, vanishing into the swirling gale like broken kites.
While that scene was heart stopping, the corner by the hatch felt like a different world.
Bai Rui was shielded within A-wu’s arms, with that complete tiger skin behind him. It was warm both in front and behind, he wasn’t losing any body heat to the piercing wind. In fact, when his back had bumped against the wall earlier, a large hand had cushioned the back of his head.
There weren’t many people in this world who were truly good to him. These small details made Bai Rui suddenly feel that having someone constantly by his side wasn’t such a bad feeling.
Bai Rui leaned his body against A-wu, seeking more warmth.
He rested his cheek against A-wu’s broad shoulder to keep the wind from hitting his face. Pressing close to where the ear would be under the hood, he whispered: “I’ll ask one more time, who exactly are you?”
A faint, sweet fragrance wafted out. The gland that had been stagnant after being roughly pressed earlier was now quietly seeping a pleasant scent.
A-wu pursed his thin lips, the lines of his jaw firm and sharp. His face remained hidden, and no one could see the flickering red light dancing in his narrow eyes.
He clearly reacted to this sweet, pleasant scent. Alpha pheromones seemed to secretly escape into the air, only to be forcibly suppressed.
Bai Rui felt a bit dizzy as he leaned there, which he attributed to seasickness.
Damn it, why is the surf so rough?
He rubbed his cheek against A-wu’s shoulder: “Forget it. Regardless of who you are, just stay with me.”
“It seems you really can protect me. You’ve passed the probation.”
That sense of absolute strength gave Bai Rui a lot of psychological security. Holding onto A-wu now, with the warm tiger skin at his back and that solid chest pressing against him, was actually… quite likable.
This was also the first time Bai Rui had held someone so closely. No one had ever given him such a moment of warmth, even if they had only known each other briefly and were currently on a dangerous pirate ship.
A-wu’s hand rose slightly, hovering near the back of Bai Rui’s neck without pressing down. Instead, he reached up and gently stroked the hair on the back of Bai Rui’s head.
“Don’t worry, Your Highness. I will protect you.”
This single sentence carried an overwhelming sense of security.
Bai Rui closed his eyes, relaxing his body without reservation for the first time, leaning his full weight against A-wu’s shoulder.
“You’re a Merman, aren’t you?” He asked, though his tone held eighty percent certainty.
A-wu paused for a moment, then laughed softly in Bai Rui’s ear. “Oh, right.”
“Probably because of that, my abilities are enhanced on the sea.”
The explanation was logical and very convincing.
His appearance fit the description of a Merman perfectly. Ancient records said Mermen were beautiful, their tears turned into pearls, their songs could bewitch hearts, and they possessed the wicked ability to control wind and waves on the ocean.
Bai Rui closed his eyes and gave a soft “Mm.” “It should clear up soon. Time to prepare lunch.”
He seemed to truly believe A-wu was a Merman. Hearing this, one side of A-wu’s lips curled up: “Alright. I’d like to eat Eastern cuisine.”
“Do you like eating fish?”
Behind them, the pirates were soaked to the bone, rolling miserably across the deck. They looked pathetic, yet these two were chatting calmly.
A-wu smiled and said: “I don’t like it.”
Bai Rui: “Then what do you like to eat?”
A howling pirate flew past behind them with a “whoosh”, a shadow caught in the wind, providing a stereo sound effect past their ears, but it didn’t disturb the two in the slightest.
A-wu thought seriously for a moment, his tongue lightly licking the corner of his lip: “I like eating sweets.”
Bai Rui propped himself up and looked at him, raising an eyebrow in surprise: “Aren’t you a Merman? You don’t like fish, but you like sugar?”
A-wu grinned, baring his white teeth: “I like things that are sweet and fragrant. I don’t like things that are fishy or smelly. I’ve never liked eating fish with bulging, upturned eyes.”
“Oh,” Bai Rui remarked, “You’re quite a picky eater.”
A-wu nodded: “Yes, very picky. For a while, I was even picky about the chef.”
Bai Rui looked thoughtful: “In a bit, you can just eat the dessert. Don’t touch the other dishes.”
The sea breeze whistled, lifting the black mesh veil under his hat brim and revealing a pair of bright, beautiful eyes.
The smile deepened on A-wu’s thin lips: “As Your Highness commands.”
The wind and waves at sea rise in an instant, and the heavy dark clouds are torn open by sunlight just as quickly.
Everything happened fast and ended fast.
One after another, sailors climbed the masts. Just as they cut the ropes of the sails, the heavy canvas hit the deck with a thud, making the ship bounce twice on the water’s surface.
Sunlight descended in structured beams.
The bright light pierced through the siege of dark clouds, stabbing out from the center.
The patch of light on the deck started as a small circle and gradually expanded.
Soon after, the entire sky brightened. The dark clouds vanished, leaving a clear, boundless sky.
All the survivors took deep breaths to calm their minds after their brush with death.
Several Annan sailors knelt toward a certain direction of the sea, murmuring prayers. They seemed to be speaking to their faith.
It was ironic that these pirates, who lived by robbery and murder, actually had a faith.
This was the first scene Bai Rui saw after stepping out from behind A-wu. The corners of his mouth twitched downward, and he turned his gaze away.
Captain Jayne was sprawled on the ground, his legs still twitching.
He was lucky he hadn’t been tossed overboard just now, especially since everyone else had someone to grab onto, while he had no one.
Finally, the One Eyed Man limped over and helped him up: “Respected Captain, are you alright?”
Jayne retched to the side, spitting out a mouthful of seawater. Too exhausted to curse anyone yet, he was helped up with a look of utter confusion.
He had been so battered by the waves that he was almost dazed. He had swallowed a lot of water and thought for a moment that he was finished. He hadn’t expected to live.
“Damn it…” Jayne cursed, returning to the cabin to sit down irritably. “Everything I just ate is completely gone.”
Perhaps because he had thrown so many tantrums over food before, the room was now dead silent.
After all, everyone knew Captain Jayne had a terrible temper. Combined with the fact that they had just survived a major maritime disaster, everyone was exhausted and in no mood for flattery.
“Respected Captain, what would you like to eat?”
The One Eyed Man rubbed his hands. “Since you’re hungry and everyone just had a big scare, how about I have someone prepare…”
“No need.”
Jayne waved his hand, his sinister gaze pinning itself directly onto Bai Rui at the doorway. “Let the beautiful Miss Batella do it.”
“Didn’t this beauty say she was an exquisite cook? If the food isn’t good, throw these two witches into the sea to feed the sharks.”
“Are you ready? Lying comes with a price, beauty.”
