- Chapter 73 - "She is not my Senior Sister."
“Cangwu, what are you looking at?”
Hearing Lingguang’s question, Cangwu’s gaze remained fixed on the patches of mud and sand. She frowned slightly: “Someone is watching me.”
It seemed to be more than one person, which irritated her.
“Is that so?” Lingguang waved a burst of spiritual energy through the air. The mud and sand scattered, instantly clouding that area, and several small shrimp darted out, scurrying away.
“Are you talking about them?”
“We’ve searched the Endless River, and we haven’t seen Lanshan. Let’s look in the forests on both banks instead.”
Cangwu pursed her lips and turned to ascend.
Beneath the mud and sand, within the water screen concealed by spiritual energy, Lord Lanshan watched as they turned and left.
She did not hysterically ask Feng Shu why she wouldn’t let her out. Even after having just missed Cangwu, who was searching for her face-to-face, Lord Lanshan understood that the space beneath this water screen belonged entirely to Feng Wuchang. Since Feng Wuchang allowed her to walk freely, she must have taken every precaution to ensure Lord Lanshan could not escape.
Feng Shu explained in a low voice: “The Family Head sealed my spiritual energy.”
It wasn’t until Lingguang and Cangwu’s figures completely vanished from Lord Lanshan’s sight that she retracted her gaze and looked at Feng Shu. At this moment, the person before her no longer seemed like the former Family Head or Young Lord of the Feng family, but a puppet, controlled by others, just like herself.
According to Feng Shu, Feng Wuchang’s control over the Feng family had likely reached a terrifying degree.
Lord Lanshan stretched out her hand. The spiritual energy slowly gathering in her clean palm was less than a mouthful of water.
Her spiritual energy was depleted during her struggle with Tu Wushuang, but even with injuries, her recovery shouldn’t have been this slow.
With a frown, Lord Lanshan slowly moved her fingers. A subtle tugging sensation came through, as if many invisible thin threads were wrapped around her hands.
Her eyelashes fluttered. Lord Lanshan looked up, and Feng Wuchang’s figure appeared in her line of sight.
Feng Wuchang stood a short distance away, smiling, her fingers gently hooked.
Watching her fingers move beyond her control, Lord Lanshan’s breathing hitched. Feng Wuchang had tied Puppet Threads to her. Slowly clenching her hand, Lord Lanshan’s entire palm instantly developed numerous bloody gashes. She glared coldly at Feng Wuchang, resisting her control.
Drip… Drip…
A pool of blood quickly gathered on the ground. Just as Lord Lanshan felt the invisible Puppet Threads were about to sever her tendons and bones, a surge of spiritual energy forcefully separated her hands along the thread lines.
Feng Wuchang walked over, casting a light glance at Feng Shu nearby. Her gaze then settled on Lord Lanshan. She raised Lord Lanshan’s hand through the air, watching the fresh blood drip from her hanging fingers.
“Aren’t you afraid of crippling your hand?”
Lord Lanshan lifted her thin eyelids to look directly at the person who could end her life at any moment. Her smile did not reach her eyes: “The Family Head won’t allow my hand to be crippled.”
Feng Wuchang would keep anyone useful to her. Even a spirit with low, insignificant spiritual energy would not be spared if it could play a role in her plan, let alone someone who possessed the Map of Chaos.
Feng Wuchang gave Lord Lanshan a look of approval: “Well said.”
Feng Shu saw the look of approval and turned her gaze away, her chest tightening with a bitter ache.
Her earlier arrogance and recklessness had led to this. Now, her Mother’s compliment to an outsider was like a sharp thorn piercing her heart—visible, yet impossible to pull out.
A profound sense of frustration and dejection surrounded Feng Shu.
Perhaps, she was never that capable to begin with.
“Once the Puppet Threads follow your meridians and take root in your heart, you will become a puppet entirely at my disposal,” Feng Wuchang smiled maliciously. “Of course, you must be alive before that, alive with your hands and feet intact.”
“The Family Head knows my identity. Outside the Endless River, there are Elders and disciples from Qingyun Academy looking for me. Aren’t you afraid…”
Lord Lanshan’s words trailed off as she saw Feng Wuchang beckon to the puppet behind her.
The puppet stepped forward and bowed respectfully: “Family Head.”
Feng Wuchang reached out and pinched the puppet’s face to show Lord Lanshan. While observing the puppet’s expression, she asked: “How is it?”
Lord Lanshan took half a step back, shocked as she looked at the puppet in Feng Wuchang’s hand.
The puppet not only had a face identical to hers, but its expression was like looking into a mirror.
“I prepared this one especially for you. Even the Valley Lord of Yang Valley and the East Lord might not be able to tell the difference.”
She intended to replace her directly!
Lord Lanshan maintained a calm exterior, but her heart was churning. Thinking of replacement, she herself was a replacement who had taken an original position.
Panic and fear slowly spread, rooted by a deep unwillingness.
A flicker of light passed through Lord Lanshan’s eyes. The image in her mind gave a certain conviction to her tone: “She will recognize me.”
“She?” Feng Wuchang scoffed dismissively: “Is the ‘she’ you speak of the young boy who was just looking at the water screen? She is indeed somewhat perceptive, but to expose this puppet’s disguise, she is not yet skilled enough.”
“The Family Head is perhaps too confident,” Lord Lanshan smiled faintly. “The Feng family’s puppetry is renowned throughout the Four Seas, but if you could truly create a puppet indistinguishable from the person, then this land beneath our feet would probably already be surnamed Feng.”
The reality, however, was that among the three great immortal families, the Liu family had always suppressed the Feng family, and even the Jin family had been steadily improving in recent years and would soon be able to surpass the Feng family. Lord Lanshan’s words were almost a direct provocation.
The smile instantly vanished from Feng Wuchang’s face. She squeezed her hand hard, and the Puppet Threads she controlled immediately tightened. Lord Lanshan’s straightened back bent instantly, her entire body trembling.
The pain was intense, as if a single thread connected all the tendons and bones in her body, and any movement made her wish for death.
“Do you enjoy talking so much?” Feng Wuchang spoke dangerously.
Lord Lanshan wiped the blood from the corner of her lips, endured the pain, raised her head, and forced a smile: “Does the Family Head not enjoy listening?”
Feng Wuchang reached out and gripped her chin, forcefully pressing her thumb onto the slightly upturned corner of her mouth. The fair skin instantly turned bruised, nearly erasing the smile.
“It doesn’t matter. The Puppet Threads have all rooted into your meridians. In just an hour, you will be permanently unable to speak.” Feng Wuchang slowly bent down, her fingers pulling the bruised area to force Lord Lanshan’s lips back up into a smile. “You like to smile so much? In an hour, I can make you smile forever.”
Once she became a puppet, what she said and what expression she wore would be entirely up to Feng Wuchang.
Feng Wuchang let go and looked at the puppet beside her: “Have you learned everything?”
The puppet nodded.
“Go.”
Lord Lanshan stumbled back a step. Feng Shu reached out to support her.
The puppet was sent above the water surface by Feng Wuchang. Pale-faced, it fell beside the Endless River, half its body submerged in the water, a Bell Fruit tightly clenched in its hand.
“Didn’t you say you could sense Senior Sister?” Cangwu was growing impatient, holding Little Bell.
Little Bell was hanging upside down, dizzy and disoriented.
“If… if the Bell Fruit is on Sister Lanshan, I can definitely sense it, yue…”
Cangwu frowned and held her a bit farther away, her eyes full of impatience.
“Wait!”
Little Bell suddenly became alert, her eyes shining brightly.
“The Bell Fruit! I sense it!”
Cangwu’s eyes instantly changed, and she asked excitedly: “Really!?”
“Really, really!” Little Bell pointed a hand: “Over there!”
Cangwu immediately moved toward the location.
“Cangwu!”
Lingguang, who was not far away, saw Cangwu suddenly head toward the Endless River again. Thinking there might be news of Lord Lanshan, she sent a message to Song Qingcheng and followed after her.
Rushing to the riverside as quickly as possible, Cangwu saw the person half-submerged in the water and her breathing hitched.
Lingguang saw it too, and she cried out in surprise: “It’s Lanshan!”
The two rushed over one after the other. Lingguang reached the person first. She pulled the figure out of the water and turned around to see Cangwu standing frozen, lost in thought.
“Why are you spacing out? Now that we’ve found her, hurry and take her back to Elder Yu for treatment!”
Little Bell chimed in: “Yes, yes!”
Cangwu still didn’t move, deep in thought, her frown deepening as she stared at the woman’s face.
Lingguang had no choice but to help the person up herself. As she moved, she seemed to touch an injury, and ‘Lord Lanshan’ let out a low groan and slowly opened her eyes.
“…Lingguang?” Her gaze shifted to the side, and ‘Lord Lanshan’s’ eyes instantly reddened. She reached out to Cangwu and stumbled unsteadily toward her, falling right into Cangwu’s embrace.
Cangwu subconsciously raised her arms to catch her, but her arms froze halfway. She became a strange, rigid post supporting ‘Lord Lanshan.’
‘Lord Lanshan’ wrapped her arms around Cangwu’s neck, leaning entirely on her, and spoke weakly: “Cangwu.”
Little Bell silently raised a hand to cover her eyes, and Lingguang’s eyes widened in shock.
Cangwu fully lowered her hands, looking coldly at the person in her arms.
“Are you severely injured? If you still have the strength, then walk yourself.”
With that, Cangwu directly pushed the other person’s hands away and turned to leave.
‘Lord Lanshan’s’ expression paused for a moment, and then she looked sadly at Cangwu’s retreating back. She slowly turned to Lingguang.
Lingguang was also stunned. She went over to support the person and awkwardly explained Cangwu’s abnormal behavior: “She might be angry that you got injured and had to lead Tu Wushuang away alone.”
“Is that so?” ‘Lord Lanshan’ murmured. “But if I hadn’t done that, Cangwu would have been the one injured.”
“It’s nothing. Cangwu usually listens to you the most. Just talk to her properly and coax her, and she’ll be fine.” Lingguang noticed the woman’s weakness and used more spiritual energy to carry her through the air.
Halfway there, they met the rushing Elder Xue and Song Qingcheng. They both sighed in relief when they saw ‘Lord Lanshan.’
Elder Xue examined ‘Lord Lanshan’s’ body and sighed: “Aside from spiritual energy depletion, she also has some serious internal injuries.”
Lingguang let out an anxious ‘Ah’ and asked: “Will she recover easily?”
Elder Xue: “We’ll have to ask Elder Yu when we get back.”
Taking the person back to Qingmu City, Xie Qingshuang and Ming Yu had also woken up, but their faces were equally pale.
Ming Yu raised a hand to touch Xie Qingshuang: “Your Junior Sister is back.”
Xie Qingshuang’s gaze, however, remained fixed on Cangwu, who had returned ahead of them and remained silent.
She vaguely felt there was something wrong.
“Lanshan, are you alright?” Mo Huaisheng stepped forward to ask with concern.
‘Lord Lanshan’ smiled gently and nodded.
Mo Huaisheng looked at her and also smiled: “That’s good.”
Lingguang brought the person to Elder Yu and then came to Cangwu’s side, asking in a low voice: “What was wrong with you just now? Lanshan was so hurt.”
Cangwu’s face was cold. Her peripheral vision swept over the person beside Elder Yu, and she almost couldn’t suppress her aura.
“She is not my Senior Sister.”
Lingguang was about to turn her head to look, but Cangwu quickly grabbed her, continuing her message through voice transmission: “Don’t look at her.”
Lingguang’s heart raced: “How do you know she’s fake?”
Cangwu looked at her: “When have you ever seen Senior Sister embrace me like that?”
Lingguang had been too focused on the shock at the time and hadn’t thought about it carefully.
“Just that? What if Lanshan experienced a difficult separation and couldn’t control her emotions upon seeing you again?”
Cangwu added: “I once used a piece of dragon scale on Senior Sister. The dragon scale, when dissolved into flesh and blood, would carry my aura. She doesn’t have it.”
Lingguang no longer had any doubts.
“Should we tell the others?”
“Not yet. The more people who know, the easier it is to expose the secret,” Cangwu said. “You talk to her more.”
Lingguang was confused: “Why me? You are the closest person to her!”
Cangwu stated frankly: “Who knows what she turned into? Having her wear Senior Sister’s face disgusts me.”
Lingguang: “…”
If you are disgusted, am I not supposed to be disgusted too?
