- Chapter 52 - Cang Wu grasps her Senior Sister's hand, pinching her fingertips to touch her own face
The fear was real, and the weakness in her legs was real.
Lanshan Jun released her arms from around Cang Wu and stumbled backward one step, but her wrist was caught the very next second. A cold palm pressed against her, making Lanshan Jun involuntarily tremble.
Vertical pupils, scales, cold hands. The first thing that popped into Lanshan Jun’s mind was a snake. No matter the world, she was terrified of such creatures.
“Senior Sister is afraid of me?”
Cang Wu forcefully pulled her closer, using one hand to cup Lanshan’s jaw, making her look up. The vertical pupils were still there, the pale-azure dragon scales at the corners of her eyes were more pronounced, and even two thumb-sized horns had sprouted from her temples.
“Does Senior Sister want to leave?”
Cang Wu’s voice was suppressed with emotion, her attitude notably changed. When first viewing Chang Feng and Qiushui’s memories, Cang Wu was extremely disdainful of Chang Feng’s actions: loving Qiushui but confining her to the Kunlun Ruins. She knew Qiushui was free and unrestrained, yet she tricked her into staying in an empty chamber when Qiushui loved her most. Cang Wu looked down on Chang Feng’s version of liking and love.
But when she realized that her Senior Sister seemed to come from the same place as Qiushui, she began to panic. When she heard her Senior Sister ask Chang Feng how Qiushui returned, the tense string in her heart snapped completely, and her demonic nature, which she had been suppressing, manifested.
Yet, when Cang Wu revealed her true form to her Senior Sister, she saw fear and resistance in the woman’s eyes. That’s right, her Senior Sister liked those furry things. Her personality could be disguised, but she was an Azure Dragon at her core. No matter how she changed, she couldn’t turn into a kitten, big cat, or fox; nor did she condescend to do so to earn affection.
“Senior Sister.” Cang Wu grabbed her Senior Sister’s hand, pinched her fingertips, and made her touch her own face, then slowly moved upward.
As the fingertips neared the patch of dragon scales, Lanshan Jun closed her eyes immediately in fright. Cang Wu’s movements didn’t stop. She directly pressed her Senior Sister’s finger onto the scales, stroking them back and forth there.
“Didn’t Senior Sister really like touching before?”
Lanshan Jun’s voice trembled: “When did I ever touch that?”
Perhaps because her eyes were closed, Lanshan Jun felt her sense of touch suddenly elevated. The skin under her fingertip was not soft but very smooth. She could feel the gaps where the scales overlapped, and as her fingertip passed over them, they shifted slightly, revealing a tiny slit.
The fingertips moved further up. Lanshan Jun felt she had touched something very small and fleshy. When visibility is denied, people are instinctively wary and afraid of things outside their cognition.
Lanshan Jun tried to pull her hand back, but failed. Cang Wu placed her whole hand on it.
“Senior Sister, snakes don’t have horns,” Cang Wu guided the woman’s hand to touch her own horn, her breathing quickening. “I am not a snake.” Cang Wu believed a large part of her Senior Sister’s fear of snakes was due to being bitten in the secret realm earlier. If Senior Sister knew she wasn’t a snake, maybe she wouldn’t be so afraid.
Indeed, after Cang Wu finished saying she wasn’t a snake, Lanshan Jun’s tightly furrowed brows relaxed slightly, but her eyes remained closed. Lanshan Jun also realized she was now touching Cang Wu’s horn.
“Senior Sister, are you still scared?” Cang Wu tightly watched the changes in the woman’s expression, afraid of missing anything.
Lanshan Jun pursed her lips, her eyelashes fluttering as she half-opened one eye. Aside from the pale-azure scales at the corners of her eyes and the two small horns, Cang Wu’s appearance hadn’t changed significantly, and her pupils had reverted to their original state. Perhaps it was the lack of the shocking vertical pupils, but Lanshan Jun also let out a sigh of relief.
“Cang Wu, you…” Lanshan Jun stumbled over her words, unsure what to say.
Just as Cang Wu was about to speak, an unfamiliar spiritual energy attacked. She had no choice but to temporarily suppress her words and conceal her demonic form. Lanshan Jun was slightly surprised to see her easily retract it.
“Cang Wu, Lanshan, are you two alright?”
The late Elder Xue looked worried. Seeing only the two of them, her eyes constantly looked around for something.
“Where is Chang Feng?”
Lanshan Jun subtly moved her foot, positioning herself slightly in front of Cang Wu. Chang Feng was first injured by Cang Wu’s sword and then dissipated her spiritual power to pass away. If this matter were investigated to the root, whether directly or indirectly, Cang Wu would be implicated. And Cang Wu was so anxious to conceal her demonic form that she probably didn’t want others to know her identity.
Out of self-interest, Lanshan Jun only said that Chang Feng had dissipated her spiritual power and passed away after seeing Qiushui. If Dean Xuan asked later, she would say Cang Wu was too worried about her and couldn’t hold back, which was also true.
Hearing that Chang Feng had passed away, a trace of sorrow flashed in Elder Xue’s eyes, and she didn’t say anything more. She sent a signal into the air from where they stood. Soon, Lingguang and the others arrived, and they all breathed a sigh of relief when they saw that everyone was fine.
On the cloud boat returning to Qingyun Academy, the discussion about Chang Feng and Qiushui continued without end. Everyone had their own opinions, even joining different tables.
“How did Chang Feng love Qiushui?” Lingguang looked discontentedly at Song Qingcheng.
Song Qingcheng whispered: “She had the responsibility of guarding the Kunlun Ruins, but she still went to look for Qiushui, and she even made thousands of soul banners for her after Qiushui left.”
“So what?” Lingguang scoffed. “She only loved her after Qiushui left. What is that? Guilt? Regret? Doing it for herself?”
Song Qingcheng helplessly said: “Chang Feng achieved Immortality through the Path of Ruthlessness. Didn’t you see her Immortal power continuously dissipating later on? Every time Qiushui expressed her feelings for Chang Feng, Chang Feng’s Immortal power would dissipate faster. This also counts as a response.”
“If she didn’t say it, who would know? Qiushui couldn’t see her dissipating Immortal power.” Lingguang was emotional. Seeing Song Qingcheng about to speak again, she slammed her hand on the table: “Song Qingcheng!”
Song Qingcheng: “…”
Next to the two, Zhaochen was curious about the location of the ‘home’ Qiushui spoke of. Xiao Jiu kept eating, her cheeks puffed up. For some reason, ever since Elder Xue took the bell from her, she had been extremely hungry. Even after it was returned, she was still hungry. She ate while listening to Lingguang and Song Qingcheng argue.
Across from them, Ming Yu rested her chin in her hand, feeling a bit bored. Her gaze shifted to Xie Qingshuang. A curl formed on her lips, and she leaned closer.
“Xie Qingshuang, you also cultivate the Path of Ruthlessness, right?”
Xie Qingshuang lightly replied, “Mhm.”
Ming Yu suddenly became interested. She reached out, picked up a strand of Xie Qingshuang’s hair draped over her shoulder, wrapped it around her fingertip, and asked mischievously: “Then if you fall in love with someone, will your spiritual power also dissipate and your boundary regress like Chang Feng?”
Xie Qingshuang pursed her lips: “I don’t know.”
“Then will you fall in love with me? Hmm?” Ming Yu leaned on the table, practically moving right under Xie Qingshuang’s nose.
Xie Qingshuang looked down at her, her hands resting on her lap slowly clenching.
“Will you or won’t you?” Ming Yu pressed, smiling like a dazzling, captivating flower that tempted people to pluck it. Only after being pricked by its poisonous thorns would one realize it was a deadly bloom.
Xie Qingshuang advanced instead of retreating, leaning her upper body closer, her dark eyes fixed on her: “What if I do?”
The cold aura belonging to a Path of Ruthlessness cultivator drew near. Ming Yu’s expression stiffened, but since she was the one who initiated the provocation, she absolutely couldn’t admit defeat and retreat now. Ming Yu’s expression turned icy and fierce as she spoke: “You dare to, and I will kill you.”
Xie Qingshuang’s lips curved into a smile.
The intimate distance and posture of the two made Lanshan Jun’s head full of question marks. What did she miss? Or was this the bond between the two female leads—that their feelings would deepen even without others deliberately bringing them closer? Lanshan Jun was genuinely curious about what progress had allowed the two to move so quickly.
She subconsciously wanted to call out for the Book Spirit, then belatedly realized there was no Book Spirit anymore, only Lan Yan (闌晏), who knew nothing and was only concerned with saving her own life.
Feeling a bit disappointed, Lanshan Jun withdrew her gaze. Looking to the side, she suddenly met Cang Wu’s eyes. Cang Wu was staring intently at her, as if suppressing something.
“Why does Senior Sister always look at her?”
Lanshan Jun: “?”
“Does Senior Sister like her?”
Cang Wu’s eyes narrowed. Upon seeing this, Lanshan Jun quickly reached out and covered her eyes to block the sight. The scent of the Three-Heart Pure Lotus entered her nose, and the vexation in Cang Wu’s heart subsided considerably.
Even at this close range, Lanshan Jun still used voice transmission: “Be careful.”
Cang Wu blinked her eyes: “Senior Sister still hasn’t answered me.”
Lanshan Jun said helplessly: “Are you talking about Senior Sister Xie?”
Cang Wu’s tone dropped: “Senior Sister cares about her; you look at her often.”
Lanshan Jun suddenly recalled a sentence she had read before: While you were looking at her, my gaze was always following you. Lanshan Jun could feel Cang Wu’s reliance and concern for her.
“Don’t overthink it. I don’t like Senior Sister Xie.”
Cang Wu pulled Lanshan Jun’s hand away. Her pupils were now clearly black and white. Their eyes met.
“Then can Senior Sister like me, love me?” Cang Wu licked her lips, swallowing hard: “I will never be like Chang Feng.”
Lanshan Jun’s breathing hitched, and she suddenly stood up. This action immediately drew everyone’s attention at the table.
Lingguang tilted her head: “Lanshan, what’s wrong? Your face is so red.”
Lanshan Jun didn’t dare to look at anyone. She grabbed the cold tea on the table and fiercely gulped it down, stammering: “I… I’m a little seasick.”
Lingguang: “Ah? Seasick?” The cloud boat was condensed from Elder Xue’s spiritual power; it was as stable as flat ground. How could she be seasick?
Xiao Jiu clapped her hands and prepared to stand up: “I’ll go talk to Elder Xue and ask her to go slower.”
“No, no need,” Lanshan Jun stopped her. “I’ll just go get some air.” To avoid Cang Wu, Lanshan Jun stepped past Lingguang.
After Lanshan Jun left, Lingguang shifted her seat to ask Cang Wu: “What were you two talking about? You scared Lanshan so much she couldn’t speak.”
Cang Wu avoided answering, instead asking: “If Chang Feng had responded to Qiushui’s feelings, would Qiushui not have left?”
Lingguang thought about it and nodded: “Probably.” Qiushui never received Chang Feng’s love and gradually became disheartened.
“I know what to do!” Cang Wu stood up.
Lingguang was confused: “Know what? Where are you going?”
Cang Wu only left one sentence: “To get some air.” To find Senior Sister.
Lingguang sat back next to Song Qingcheng, muttering: “You’ve got it wrong. You’re not Chang Feng, and Lanshan isn’t Qiushui. You can’t force yourselves into those roles.”
Song Qingcheng handed her a fruit: “It’s best if we don’t interfere too much with other people’s relationships.” They had just argued about Chang Feng and Qiushui.
“What ‘other people’!” Lingguang was already annoyed with her and glared fiercely: “Lanshan and Cang Wu are my friends; I just want to care about them.” She tossed the fruit back into Song Qingcheng’s lap and scoffed: “You should go cultivate the Path of Ruthlessness too!”
Song Qingcheng: “…” Everything I say is wrong.
