- Chapter 47 - Are You Sick, Lanshan Jun?
“One, two, three, four…”
Beside the Cloud Boat, Elder Xue reached out and counted the heads: “Seven, eight, perfect, that’s everyone.”
“Everyone?” Lingguang glanced around.
Song Qingcheng, Lanshan Jun, Cang Wu, Zhaochen, Xiao Jiu, Xie Qingshuang, Ming Yu.
“Elder Xue, is Haisheng not coming?” Lingguang asked doubtfully.
Elder Xue merely chuckled: “This was decided by the Dean.”
Originally, Song Qingcheng was not included, but last night, Lingguang was clinging to Song Qingcheng with her hands and feet, and they couldn’t be separated, so Song Qingcheng had to be added.
“Depart.”
The Cloud Boat ascended, concealed amongst the cumulus clouds of the Azure Dome.
There were some tables and chairs on the boat. After setting off, everyone found a place to sit. Elder Xue kept Xiao Jiu at a separate table for a lecture, while Lingguang, Song Qingcheng, and Zhaochen sat together. Since Xie Qingshuang was on this trip, Lanshan Jun naturally sat beside her with Cang Wu. It would have been somewhat inappropriate for disciples of the same Yanggu to sit at separate tables.
Although Cang Wu was not very willing, she still sat down next to her Senior Sister.
Lanshan Jun looked at the two main heroines opposite her, her feelings growing complex. She hadn’t had a chance to talk to Lan Yan since the Three Thousand Steps. Previously, Lan Yan had used the identity of the Book Spirit to tell her to bring the two heroines together, but now that the Book Spirit was a hoax, was her mission also entirely false?
Just then, Lanshan Jun’s heart suddenly felt empty for a moment, followed by a sense of mournful loneliness and ethereal un reality.
If the Book Spirit truly existed, she would have a mission and a goal here, something to strive for. The Book Spirit did not exist, and she was like a wisp of soul from another world, trapped in this world within the book.
The world in the book, the real world… why had she come here?
Lanshan Jun’s gaze was unfocused, and she seemed entirely absent-minded.
“Senior Sister.”
The voice brought Lanshan Jun back to reality. She looked over to see the youth’s worried eyes, the pale cyan at the end of Cang Wu’s brow making her features look more vibrant.
Lanshan Jun gave her a small smile, not a deep one, more like a subconscious habit.
“What’s wrong?”
Cang Wu’s gaze followed the curve at the corners of the woman’s eyes down to her lips, which were straighter than usual. She was certain that whatever her Senior Sister had been thinking about was not a good thing.
Cang Wu always carried a storage pouch containing snacks Lanshan Jun had previously given her, as well as some items her Senior Sister loved, which Cang Wu had prepared and kept inside. She pulled out a small piece of candy from the storage pouch, unwrapped it, and offered it to Lanshan Jun.
“Senior Sister, have a piece of candy.”
Unlike the usual neatly-wrapped sweet pastries, this candy was wrapped in different colored paper, not tied with string or bound by a spell. The excess paper on both sides was simply twisted in opposite directions. Seeing this candy again, Lanshan Jun was momentarily dazed. She loved this kind of wrapped candy when she was little, not here in the Four Seas where humans and demons coexisted, but in the world outside the book.
Holding the paper on both sides, Lanshan Jun slowly put the candy into her mouth. The sweetness upon entry was faint, quickly dissolving and turning into spiritual energy that entered her body. In the world within the book, even the food was bland and flavorless, valued not for its color, aroma, and taste, but for its spiritual nourishment.
At this moment, Lanshan Jun began to dig deep into her memory for a brief period of time, but the past was too distant, and those memories had become hazy. Even though it felt like looking through fog, Lanshan Jun still recognized those people: her mother, her grandmother, and her true friends.
Once the longing seeped out, it became uncontrollable. Lanshan Jun’s eyes grew red, and the spiritual energy around her became chaotic.
“Lanshan?” Xie Qingshuang, sitting opposite, keenly noticed that something was wrong.
The others looked over upon hearing this, and Lingguang stood up and walked over immediately.
“What’s wrong with Lanshan?”
Elder Xue flashed to Lanshan Jun’s side, placed her fingertips on her glabella, and injected gentle spiritual energy. Soon, she pulled a wisp of deep blue spiritual energy out of her body. Lanshan Jun’s tense body suddenly relaxed. She supported herself on the table, panting, and looked at Elder Xue’s hand.
The wisp of spiritual energy was extremely dark, nearly black. The spiritual energy of cultivators in the Four Seas differs in color based on their spiritual root, but regardless of the color, the energy is always clear and transparent, never murky and deep like the wisp before them.
“Elder Xue, someone is trying to harm Lanshan!?” Lingguang exclaimed, pointing at the spiritual energy she had extracted.
“No,” Elder Xue released her grip, allowing the spiritual energy to escape and dissipate. “It was trying to extract Lanshan’s memory.”
Elder Xue’s eyes were half-lowered, a hint of worry visible. She had recognized whose spiritual energy it was. Dean Xuan’s words were truly correct; Chang Feng seemed to have fallen into Inner Madness.
Memory? Lanshan Jun pressed her lips together. No wonder she kept recalling things from the past.
When did this spiritual energy appear on her? With Dean Xuan in Azure Cloud Academy, no one should have been able to secretly leave spiritual energy on her. So, it must have happened after boarding the Cloud Boat, but Elder Xue was also on the boat, and the number of people in the Four Seas and Eight Realms with a higher cultivation than Elder Xue was very small. And this wisp of spiritual energy was solely to extract her past memories. Why?
Lanshan Jun couldn’t figure it out.
Her emotions slowly subsided, and Lanshan Jun raised her hand to wipe away the tears from the corner of her eyes.
“Lanshan, what memory were you immersed in just now?” Whether out of concern for a friend or protection for a student, Elder Xue wanted to know what Chang Feng intended to see in Lanshan’s memory.
Lanshan Jun lowered her gaze: “I apologize.”
Seeing her reluctance to speak, Elder Xue did not press further, but secretly ordered the Cloud Boat to speed up. She must see Chang Feng as soon as possible.
The wind howled past her ears, blocked outside the Cloud Boat by the barrier. Even without asking, Lanshan Jun could feel the frequent glances directed at her. She stood up and headed toward the cabin, leaving a single sentence for Cang Wu, who had immediately stood up as well: “I need to be alone.”
Cang Wu did not follow. Lanshan Jun leaned against the door, rubbing her fingertips together. She wanted to be alone, yet she also longed to tell someone. The conflicting thoughts made her feel a little irritable.
After a while, Lanshan Jun came to the couch, sat cross-legged, calmed her mind, and entered her Sea of Consciousness. Inside the Sea of Consciousness, an egg lay quietly on the lotus platform. Lanshan Jun glanced at it, then bypassed it, heading towards the cage.
Lan Yan, in the cage, sensed her arrival and slowly opened her eyes.
“Have you come to kill me?”
Lanshan Jun sat opposite her across the cage: “Lan Yan, I want to ask you a question.”
Lan Yan sneered.
Lanshan Jun: “Why did I come here?”
Lan Yan: “How should I know?”
After being cleaved by Cang Wu’s sword, she faintly heard a voice calling her in a daze. Her consciousness followed that voice, and when she opened her eyes again, she was a baby drifting on the East Sea, and some incredible information had suddenly appeared in her mind. For example, this world was merely a book, and she was just an insignificant cannon fodder character in that book. Lan Yan was unwilling! She read the entire book, which made her furious. Why should that brat Cang Wu be able to cleave her way through the Four Seas? Even if the protagonist Senior Sister Xie couldn’t defeat her, what about the Lord of the East? What about the Valley Master? What about the Palace Masters of the Four Directions? Any one of them could kill Cang Wu ten times over. What a crappy novel. Just reading it a bit more makes me want to explode.
After cursing the novel, Lan Yan suddenly felt an extra soul in her body, which forcibly pushed her out. Lan Yan: “…” In her anger, Lan Yan already had a plan—a plan that could kill the villain Cang Wu without backfiring on herself.
“In the beginning, you said I could choose a special ability,” Lanshan Jun extended her hand, and wind swirled around her palm. “I chose a sword, I chose a blade, I chose the Five-Element Array formations. All were rejected by you using various excuses. Only when I accidentally mentioned that wind was also good did you not outright refuse, and then you began to guide me, little by little, to choose wind as my special ability.”
“Lan Yan, this special ability wasn’t given by you, was it?”
“The Water Spiritual Root is this body’s original spiritual root, but how can a Single Spiritual Root possess the power of wind manipulation?”
“Perhaps the person who gave me the power to control wind is the one who brought me to this world.”
Lanshan Jun spoke to herself, finished everything in one go, and immediately left the Sea of Consciousness without sparing Lan Yan a glance.
Lan Yan: “…” Are you sick, Lanshan Jun? Coming and going as you please.
Exiting the Sea of Consciousness, Lanshan Jun heard Lingguang’s gasp outside.
“Wow, it’s so beautiful.”
Then the door was knocked: “Senior Sister, we’ve arrived.”
Lanshan Jun took a long breath: “Okay, I’m coming.”
After that long monologue, Lanshan Jun’s mind was clearer. She opened the door and smiled at Cang Wu as usual. Seeing the worry in Cang Wu’s eyes, Lanshan Jun reached out and touched her face: “It’s alright, I’m fine now.” Cang Wu felt the warmth of her Senior Sister’s palm and couldn’t help but linger, wishing she would stay longer, but unfortunately, now was not the right time.
The Cloud Boat landed. Lanshan Jun and Cang Wu were the last to disembark. Lingguang and Xiao Jiu were already playing around. Snow was falling everywhere. The roofs of the distant houses were thickly covered, the surface round and cute, like soft balls of snow placed on top.
The night sky here was not like the star-and-moon-filled vista seen from the Cloud Zenith of Azure Cloud Academy. Instead, a brilliant Heavenly River spanned the Azure Dome, and a flowing, colorful curtain of light shifted with intoxicating radiance, so much so that one could easily get lost in it.
“Is this… the Aurora?” Lanshan Jun murmured softly.
“Aurora?” The waterfall of light pouring down from the top of the Azure Dome was reflected in Cang Wu’s eyes: “It is very beautiful.”
Lanshan Jun nodded: “A magnificent sight of the mortal world.”
She had once traveled to Baima City across the ocean to chase the Aurora. She was lucky enough that the Aurora on that occasion was said to be the most beautiful and magnificent one in those years.
Elder Xue called the group of juniors back to her side and left a mark on each person’s wrist.
“If you encounter danger, wipe off the mark, and I will know and rush over.”
Xiao Jiu said with a grin: “What danger could there be in such a fun place?”
Elder Xue glanced at her.
Xiao Jiu immediately shut up: “Understood, Elder Xue.”
A series of faint sounds echoed in the snow. As the group ventured deeper, the wind, laden with fine snow, suddenly intensified. It only took a breath for Lanshan Jun to realize something was wrong before she lost connection with the people around her.
She attempted to control the wind and snow, but found that she could not command the wind in this place. It was as if she had suddenly lost her power to control the wind. Wind and snow whipped across her face. Lanshan Jun tilted her head and took a step back.
Her foot seemed to hit something hard behind her. Lanshan Jun turned to look, and in a fleeting gap in the swirling wind and snow, she saw a buried stone stele. She could faintly make out two words carved into the stone.
Bai, Ma (White, Horse).
Lanshan Jun’s pupils suddenly contracted. She quickly reached out and swept the fallen snow off the stele.
“Baima Town…”
Could it be such a coincidence? The same Aurora, a similar place name.
A strong premonition arose in Lanshan Jun’s heart that this place held the answers she sought. Why had she come here, and who had given her the power to control the wind?
Stepping past the stone stele, Lanshan Jun walked against the wind and snow, her clothes flapping fiercely.
