- Chapter 43 - Little Cats Are Little Cuties, Big Cats Are Big Cuties
“I will protect Senior Sister well.”
Cang Wu said this with sincerity. Lord Lanshan smiled as she slowly withdrew her hand.
“I trust Junior Sister, but you don’t need to hold on so tightly; it will be inconvenient later.”
Her palm empty, Cang Wu lowered her gaze, concealing the fleeting look of loss and displeasure.
“I will listen to whatever Senior Sister says.”
Lord Lanshan nodded, “Go find Lingguang and the others.”
As she left, Cang Wu looked back down one last time. A streak of cyan spiritual power silently snaked toward Mu Liu’s side.
Mu Liu was just about to activate her spiritual power to ride the wind upwards when a force suddenly struck her waist—fast, fierce, and accurate.
Mu Liu lost her balance and immediately fell off the shattered rock fragment. On the way down, she brushed past Mu Fu’an, and she quickly shouted, “Mu Fu’an!”
At that distance, Mu Fu’an could easily have reached out and grabbed her.
But Mu Fu’an was still a step too slow; only when Mu Liu was already rolling downwards did Mu Fu’an’s hand lift.
“Mu Fu’an! You just wait for me!” Mu Liu hissed angrily through gritted teeth. She reached out, trying to grab something, but in the section of her fall, there was not a single stable rock fragment to grip, as if someone had deliberately cleared that path for her to fall down.
“Damn it!”
Mu Liu knew clearly that someone was deliberately setting her up, but she hadn’t seen clearly who it was in that brief moment. As she rapidly approached the magma, the searing heat filled Mu Liu with dread. She dared not gamble her life on whether Elder Xue’s words were true.
She gathered spiritual power in her palm, and the surrounding wind forcefully propped up her back. The edge of her sleeve brushed the surface of the magma and was instantly scorched. Mu Liu fiercely arched her waist, just as a long whip coiled around it and violently yanked her upwards.
Her feet landed on solid ground, escaping the predicament, and Mu Liu breathed a huge sigh of relief. She looked at the person who had intervened, a flash of surprise in her eyes.
“Young Master Ye?”
The Young Master of the Crossing Life Gate, Ye Nanyi.
Ye Nanyi retracted the long whip; it was clearly of extraordinary quality and transformed into a hair tie, securing a lock of hair that fell over Ye Nanyi’s shoulder—just the right length to be subtly hidden amongst the strands.
Mu Liu did not offer thanks. She believed that even without Ye Nanyi, she would not have been swallowed by the magma.
Ye Nanyi curved his lips into a smile, “Do you know who was trying to harm you?”
“There.”
The man raised his chin toward a specific direction. Mu Liu looked over; it was Lord Lanshan and Cang Wu.
Mu Liu narrowed her eyes unpleasantly and let out a cold snort. She turned her gaze back to Ye Nanyi beside her, a smile curving her lips, “Thank you, Young Master Ye, for pointing that out.”
Ye Nanyi looked at her and raised an eyebrow, “Is that how you thank me?”
“Then how does Young Master wish for me to thank you?”
Ye Nanyi stepped forward, slowly bent down, and whispered next to Mu Liu’s ear, “I heard that the ‘Reincarnation’ from the Thousand Poisons Valley is quite potent, and there is no known cure for it.”
Mu Liu was somewhat repulsed by this close proximity but did not immediately push Ye Nanyi away.
“You want it?”
Ye Nanyi chuckled lightly, “It seems you possess it.”
Mu Liu smiled wickedly, “Does Young Master Ye intend to use such a cruel poison on someone?”
Ye Nanyi straightened up and asked directly, “Will you give it or not?”
Mu Liu clicked her tongue, assessing the Young Master. Calling him ‘Young Master’ seemed slightly inaccurate, as Ye Nanyi was currently in full control of the Crossing Life Gate; calling her ‘Sect Leader Ye’ wouldn’t be an overstatement.
“How do I know that Young Master Ye won’t use this poison to set a trap for me? If the person you want to kill has too noble a status, won’t our Thousand Poisons Valley end up taking the blame?” Mu Liu glanced downward, and a vortex of wind formed beneath her feet. “Young Master Ye, we can discuss this problem another time; it is not appropriate right now.”
Mu Liu smiled and started moving upward, only to be snagged again by that long whip in mid-air, sending her flying back onto the shattered rocks.
Ye Nanyi used the momentum to spring up, looking down at the person on the rocks, and said, “You’re welcome.”
Ye Nanyi’s figure swiftly disappeared among the rock fragments. Mu Liu, having been thrown down twice in a row, trembled with fury.
“They all deserve to die.”
On the other side, Lord Lanshan and Cang Wu had already rejoined Lingguang and the others. Both Cang Wu and Song Qingcheng had Wood Spirit Roots, so they dealt with the small stone demons surrounding them. Lord Lanshan circulated her wind power to stabilize their positions, which also helped conserve the spiritual energy the other two would expend by using flight arts.
Cultivators’ inherent flight ability is not strong; they can only maintain it using artifacts—like Sword Cultivators riding swords or Blade Cultivators riding blades, while Formation Cultivators carve wind formation arrays onto their magic robes to aid levitation. Now that Elder Xue had confiscated everyone’s artifacts, only allowing them to use raw spiritual energy, they had to jump up and down on these rock fragments while also diverting energy to fight the small stone demons. Although the stone demons were not very powerful, they were still a nuisance. If one had a Wood Spirit Root, dealing with the stone demons required little effort, but for other Spirit Roots, the stone demons were the biggest obstacle.
Lord Lanshan felt that what Elder Xue wanted to see was not their individual survival abilities, but rather whether they could cooperate. Their group was relatively fortunate: they had two Wood Spirit Roots, and she, being a Wind Spirit Root, possessed wind-riding power. Although Lingguang and Zhaochen’s belongings were completely confiscated, both of their levitation skills were quite good.
“Let’s move closer. Elder Xue must be watching,” Lord Lanshan told them. “Perhaps she might even intervene again to separate us.”
Lingguang placed a hand on Song Qingcheng’s shoulder, slowly transferring spiritual energy to her, and exclaimed, “Again? We don’t even have stable footing here.”
They gathered in an area with a dense cluster of rocks: Cang Wu close to Lord Lanshan, Lingguang and Song Qingcheng together, and Zhaochen in the middle of them.
“I’m only guessing; don’t be too—”
Before she finished speaking, the magma below suddenly erupted and began to boil violently. The cooled, blackened surface cracked completely, and a massive roar echoed from the depths. It sounded like a tiger’s roar.
Lingguang frowned, “Why does that sound so familiar?”
In the next instant, a gigantic white tiger leaped out of the magma, a pair of faint golden wings on its back, its tail vaguely shimmering like flowing light. Lingguang’s mouth fell open, displaying the shock of seeing an acquaintance.
Zhaochen, unable to see, still sensed the powerful aura radiating in all directions.
“A White Tiger?”
“Is that Xiao Jiu?”
Lingguang murmured, “Who knows? I’ve never seen her true form.”
“This is the Big Cat,” Lord Lanshan admitted. This was her first time seeing such a large feline; one of its paws was as big as she was. Taking a breath from that would be amazing.
“Cat?” Lingguang looked at her doubtfully. “Lanshan, just because you haven’t seen a White Tiger doesn’t mean you can call it a cat.”
“Big Cat means—”
Lord Lanshan wanted to explain, but the creature below had already leaped up, its massive body instantly shattering most of the surrounding rock fragments.
The White Tiger bounded in front of the few of them and let out a huge roar. The roar carried spiritual fluctuations, and Lord Lanshan raised a hand to defend herself.
Over there, Lingguang shouted, “See? You called her a cat, and now she’s angry!”
“I was complimenting her cuteness!” Lord Lanshan retorted unconvincingly.
The tiger’s roar inexplicably stopped. Cang Wu glanced at the White Tiger and couldn’t help but say, “What’s so cute about a big, clumsy thing.”
The White Tiger glared and approached Cang Wu, snorting in clear displeasure.
Cang Wu was equally unyielding and stared back. Lord Lanshan smiled, pulled her junior sister behind her, looked at the giant cat’s head, and spoke softly, “Cute. Little cats are little cuties, and big cats are big cuties.”
Hearing the slightly coaxing tone of her Senior Sister, Cang Wu’s expression grew increasingly heavy. The White Tiger, however, was pleased, turned its head, and went to torment others.
It continuously leaped through the air, driving off the people on the shattered rocks one by one, as if playing a game. In an instant, cries of terror and fear echoed throughout the secret realm.
“Stop.”
Elder Xue suddenly spoke, her authority felt without anger. A surging spiritual power swept over them like wind over a plain; the magma vanished, the intense heat disappeared, and the students who had fallen into the magma were all standing safely behind Elder Xue. The secret realm instantly turned into a void.
The huge White Tiger landed on the ground and reverted to human form, looking guilty and not daring to look at Elder Xue.
“Xiao Jiu! You—!” Lingguang saw the person before her and was about to step forward but was stopped by Song Qingcheng before she obediently stood firm.
Xiao Jiu cautiously walked over to Elder Xue, bowed her head, and admitted her fault, “Elder Xue, I was wrong.”
Elder Xue glanced at her, the side of her cheek slightly bulging, as if she were grinding her teeth.
“Did you have a good time?” She told Xiao Jiu to stay under the magma and just cause some minor trouble for these children; instead, she jumped out as such a huge figure and started running around.
Xiao Jiu vigorously shook her head, “No, no, no.”
Elder Xue snorted coldly, “Stand properly.”
Then, addressing this batch of children who had just entered the Azure Cloud Academy, her voice was gentle yet audible to everyone.
“I will report the situation just now truthfully to Dean Xuan. This enrollment test is temporarily canceled; you may all return now.”
With that, Elder Xue gave Xiao Jiu a look.
“Come with me.”
Xiao Jiu lowered her head and mumbled quietly, “Yes, Great-Grandmother.”
Elder Xue glared at her.
“Don’t call me that.”
Xiao Jiu smiled and corrected herself, “Yes, Elder Xue.”
Before leaving, Xiao Jiu glanced from afar at Lord Lanshan and the others, making a face that implied a difficult fate.
“It really is Xiao Jiu,” Lingguang chuckled with schadenfreude. “I heard that Elder Xue came from the White Tiger Hall before; Elder Xue might even be some elder relative of Xiao Jiu.”
After Elder Xue left, the confiscated artifacts returned to their owners. Lingguang’s eyes lit up, and she grabbed Lord Lanshan, “Lanshan, come on, I have something good to show you!”
Lord Lanshan intended to pull Cang Wu along but found her outstretched hand dodged. Cang Wu explained, “Dean Xuan asked me to go over there. Senior Sisters, you go ahead first; I will find you later.”
Lord Lanshan didn’t doubt her, gave a few instructions, and was then pulled away by the excited Lingguang. Song Qingcheng and Zhaochen followed along.
Cang Wu left the meeting area, her gaze fixed on a receding figure. The Azure Cloud Academy had numerous cloud residences, all extremely scattered; every student had their own space.
Mu Liu and Mu Fu’an, both disciples of the Thousand Poisons Valley, shared one cloud residence, but Mu Liu forbade Mu Fu’an from entering, only allowing her to act as a doorkeeper.
“Useless!” Mu Liu loved calling Mu Fu’an useless, thinking she was completely worthless. With a harsh kick to Mu Fu’an’s knee, the force was so heavy that Mu Fu’an immediately dropped to one knee. Mu Fu’an was still injured on her back; the injury to her knee at that moment caused her to moan in pain.
Hearing Mu Fu’an’s cry of pain, Mu Liu was satisfied and narrowed her eyes.
“Were you intentionally not holding me?”
Mu Fu’an’s forehead was covered in large beads of sweat, and her lips were pale as she shook her head, “I wasn’t, I, I didn’t have time.”
“If you didn’t have time, then…” Mu Liu held her in even greater disdain. “Bringing you out is just embarrassing.”
Saying that, Mu Liu was about to open the door and go inside when someone fiercely kicked her from behind. This kick didn’t use spiritual power, but it directly sent Mu Liu stumbling forward, causing her to vomit blood. She lay sprawled on the floor of the cloud residence, her vision darkening.
After a while, Mu Liu recovered slightly. She turned around to look, her eyes burning with rage. Suddenly, a foot firmly stepped on her neck, the tip of the shoe pressing against her throat.
“You…”
Mu Liu’s eyes widened; her entire body was immobilized by an immense oppressive force, unable even to use her spiritual power. “Mu… Mu Fu’an…” Mu Liu raised a hand toward Mu Fu’an at the door, pleading for help. Mu Fu’an seemed as immobilized as she was.
Bang— The door slammed shut.
“You… you, you want to kill me?” Mu Liu’s voice trembled.
“Senior Sister dislikes me killing people, so you cannot die here either,” Cang Wu looked down at her with utter contempt, her face cold and severe.
“How did you look at my Senior Sister today?”
“Do you want your eyes anymore?”
