- Chapter 13 - "Senior Sister Has So Many Junior Sisters; I Don't Know Which One You Are Calling."
Of the myriad cultivators, each Sea of Consciousness is different. Some are self-contained personal spaces, some contain the object they were most entangled with in life, and some are even an illusion of a person.
Lan Shan-jun’s Sea of Consciousness is a book.
There are only three names written in the book: Xie Qing-shuang, Ming Yu, and Cang Wu—the two original female leads and the villain.
Lan Shan-jun entered her Sea of Consciousness with her divine sense. She stood at the book’s title page, and the three names automatically floated before her. Unlike before, where they would evade her, ‘Cang Wu’ was surprisingly obedient this time, fluttering around Lan Shan-jun like a butterfly.
‘Xie Qing-shuang’ and ‘Ming Yu’ were closer to each other. Ever since Lan Shan-jun entered her Sea of Consciousness for the first time, ‘Ming Yu’ had been enveloped by a black-and-red aura, and now ‘Xie Qing-shuang’ was also slowly being permeated by that same black-and-red energy.
Lan Shan-jun reached out and gently separated them slightly. ‘Xie Qing-shuang’ stayed alone for a moment, then chased after ‘Ming Yu’ and crowded close again.
Watching them, Lan Shan-jun couldn’t help but chuckle: “As expected of a destined connection; even their names have to be close together. It seems Senior Sister Xie’s Path of Ruthlessness will be hard to master.”
“Let’s go, Junior Sister; let’s not be the lightbulb.”
Lan Shan-jun led ‘Cang Wu’ forward. The domain of the Sea of Consciousness was vast. Passing the title page of the book, behind it was a one-to-one replica of the Yang Valley.
Because Lan Shan-jun opened her Sea of Consciousness late, by the time she wanted to recall things from her original world, the memories had become vague. The place where she spent the longest time was the Yang Valley, so her Sea of Consciousness naturally recreated a Yang Valley for her.
If that snake demon truly hid something in her Sea of Consciousness, it could only be here.
Lan Shan-jun closed her eyes, and her divine sense instantly swept across the entire Sea of Consciousness.
Every blade of grass, every tree, every brick and tile…
Nothing.
Lan Shan-jun frowned. As her thoughts moved, the Yang Valley before her dissolved into countless points of light, scattering like stars.
She walked into the starlight, only feeling her own spiritual energy fluctuations.
Nothing?
The stone in her heart did not fall; instead, it hung even higher.
Withdrawing her divine sense, Lan Shan-jun slowly opened her eyes and shook her head when she met the Valley Master’s expectant gaze.
“Nothing in the Sea of Consciousness either?” Xie You found it strange. “Could it be that the snake demon’s cultivation level is even higher than mine and the Eastern Lord’s?”
Saying this, Xie You shook her head, negating her own guess: “That’s unlikely. If it were that high, it wouldn’t be a snake demon anymore; it would be a Snake Immortal.”
Although the Valley Master’s words sounded like an exaggeration, Lan Shan-jun fully believed them. She had been outside the Valley two or three times and knew the standing of the Eastern Lord and the Valley Master’s cultivation among the cultivators of the Four Seas: they were at the very top of the pyramid.
“It’s alright, little Lan Shan, don’t be afraid,” Xie You said gently. “Cultivate well; if anything happens, you have me and your Master.”
Perhaps it was because the Eastern Lord and the Valley Master were behind her, but Lan Shan-jun’s anger toward the snake demon in this matter far surpassed her own worry for her little life.
Leaving the Valley Master’s small courtyard, Lan Shan-jun headed straight for the schoolhouse. Her Senior Sisters and Junior Sisters should all be listening to instruction now.
“You really have a big heart,” even the Book Spirit couldn’t help but exclaim.
Lan Shan-jun raised an eyebrow: “My life is still intact, why worry so much? Since the problem isn’t in me, when I find that snake demon later, I can force the answer out of her.”
Book Spirit: “Where are you going to find the snake demon?”
A few vague snippets flashed in Lan Shan-jun’s mind. She was standing in a tree then, the snake demon was below, and her own body was wrapped around the snake demon’s neck.
Lan Shan-jun snorted coldly: “Why would I need to search? She will come find me herself.”
Book Spirit was surprised: “She’s been following you?”
“Possibly.” Lan Shan-jun held this suspicion in her heart. If they had met elsewhere, she could have called it a coincidence, but that was the Mist Forest of the Yang Valley; mere coincidence couldn’t explain it.
That snake demon must have been following her.
But why didn’t the Eastern Lord or the Valley Master detect the snake demon’s presence within the Yang Valley?
Wait. The Yang Valley’s barrier was damaged that day. The snake demon might have taken the opportunity to sneak in then.
Lan Shan-jun pursed her lips, her thoughts becoming clear.
So, after that incident, the Eastern Lord ordered her to cultivate early every day to strive for a breakthrough sooner, all to guard against that snake demon showing up again.
Book Spirit: “The Eastern Lord really went to great lengths.”
Lan Shan-jun nodded: “Indeed.”
She arrived just as the instruction period was ending, and the Senior Sisters and Junior Sisters she had been thinking of walked out of the schoolhouse.
She saw them, and they saw her.
“Senior Sister Lan Shan!”
“Junior Sister Lan Shan!”
The calls made Lan Shan-jun’s eyes light up. She dove headfirst into the fragrant crowd of girls. The feeling was like going to a cat café in her past life, where all the cats swarm around her, meowing—it was like heavenly music clearing her ears.
“Senior Sister Lan Shan, it’s been a while! We missed you,” a Junior Sister linked arms with Lan Shan-jun and gently shook her: “We heard from the Valley Master a few days ago that Senior Sister Lan Shan was injured. Are you completely well now?”
Lan Shan-jun smiled with her eyes curved: “Yes, having Junior Sisters think of me, even the most severe injury would heal completely.”
“Junior Sister Lan Shan, I’m returning this to you,” a Junior Sister squeezed into the crowd, holding up a clean handkerchief in her hand.
Lan Shan-jun found the handkerchief familiar. Seeing the Junior Sister’s face clearly, she remembered: on the day of the Flood Tide, she used this handkerchief to wipe the girl’s face.
Lan Shan-jun smiled gently, immediately stunning the Junior Sister with her expression.
“It’s just an ordinary handkerchief, why wash it clean and return it? So well-behaved and so cute.”
Lan Shan-jun was always adept at coaxing younger sisters. As she spoke, she reached out and gently rubbed the Junior Sister’s head.
The Junior Sister’s face flushed red, and her heart pounded erratically.
“Junior Sister Lan Shan only remembers these well-behaved and cute Junior Sisters; all of us Senior Sisters have been completely forgotten.”
“How could that be, Senior Sister Pei, don’t talk nonsense.” Lan Shan-jun said this as she went to take Senior Sister Pei’s hand, but before she could touch her, her peripheral vision suddenly caught sight of a figure standing quietly in the distance, looking over in their direction.
She was clearly wearing the same Yang Valley uniform, so she was most likely another Senior or Junior Sister, yet for some inexplicable reason, Lan Shan-jun’s heart skipped a beat.
She looked over, and her fingertips curled up sharply.
It was Cang Wu.
Lan Shan-jun’s frozen expression caused the surrounding Senior and Junior Sisters to follow her gaze.
“Who is that? We haven’t seen her before, is she a new Junior Sister?”
“Yes, we really haven’t seen her.”
“Why is that Junior Sister’s gaze so strange? Is she looking at us?”
“Ah! I remember now, that’s the Eastern Lord’s newly accepted disciple! She’s always been up at Ta Yun Residence, rarely coming down.”
Slowly, all the gazes shifted to Lan Shan-jun.
The Senior Sister Pei reached out and poked Lan Shan-jun’s shoulder, asking, “Junior Sister Lan Shan, is she here looking for you?”
Lan Shan-jun slowly nodded, her words popping out one by one: “Yes, perhaps.”
Is it because it’s too boring up at Ta Yun Residence, so she came down to look for me? At this age, it was normal to be lively and restless.
Thinking this, Lan Shan-jun waved toward Cang Wu with a bright smile: “Junior Sister.”
Cang Wu heard her, turned her head, and walked away.
Lan Shan-jun: “?”
Senior Sister Pei chuckled lightly: “Junior Sister Lan Shan, your Junior Sister seems to have quite a temper.”
Lan Shan-jun lowered her hand, quickly said a few words of farewell to the Senior and Junior Sisters, and hurried after Cang Wu.
She chased all the way to Ta Yun Residence, panting slightly. She grabbed Cang Wu, who was walking forward with her head down: “Junior Sister.”
Cang Wu shook off Lan Shan-jun’s hand, turned back, and looked deeply into Lan Shan-jun’s eyes: “Senior Sister has so many Junior Sisters; I don’t know which one you are calling.”
