- Chapter 112 - Deer Spotted Deep in the Woods
As the jade tablet could not be used, Lord Lan Shan and Cang Wu walked along a single, unswerving direction. However, no matter how they walked, they always returned to the spiritual sea where they had started.
“Is there some kind of formation restriction here?” Lord Lan Shan suspected.
Cang Wu’s patience was wearing thin, but she did not want to show it directly in front of her Senior Sister. She lowered her eyes, staring at the grass beneath her feet. The spirit herbs in the secret realm grew exceptionally well, verdant and lush.
Cang Wu stared at one, then stomped it flat.
Lord Lan Shan saw her little action and reached out to take her hand, her thumb gently stroking the back of Cang Wu’s hand to soothe her emotions.
Cang Wu abandoned the spirit herb that had already been stomped flat.
“There might be something here that is causing us to constantly circle back,” Lord Lan Shan said, looking around.
This place was beautiful, but it was also too eerie and gloomy. It was fine at first glance, but staying too long made the surrounding light dots feel like countless pairs of eyes, constantly watching them.
There were many plants in the Realm of Guixu that Lord Lan Shan did not recognize. When she was in Yang Valley, she did not practice the sword from dawn to dusk like the other disciples, and the Eastern Monarch did not supervise her much. Instead, she sought out many miscellaneous books from the Valley Master to read, including introductions to the flora of the Four Seas. Yet, the spiritual grasses and woods she saw before her were all unfamiliar.
Lord Lan Shan vigilantly looked at the ancient tree towering into the clouds before them. This was the most conspicuous spot in the spiritual sea. Such an attractive thing often represented danger.
Many dried vines were wrapped around the trunk of the ancient tree. The vines were covered with dense, sharp thorns, and the tree canopy was vast, obscuring the clouds and the sun.
“Senior Sister,” Cang Wu pointed with her hand. “Look.”
Lord Lan Shan followed her pointing direction and saw a completely snow-white spirit deer slowly emerge from behind the thick trunk. The spirit deer looked at them and spoke in human language, “Fated ones, you may see my master.”
With that, the spirit deer raised its foreleg and heavily stomped down again.
Instantly, the surrounding spiritual energy seemed to solidify, and the vines wrapped around the ancient tree also came alive, winding like swimming snakes toward the two of them.
Lord Lan Shan’s eyes narrowed. Bu Jin suddenly flew out, and the accompanying wind blades in its swing swirled up, completely shredding the vines on the ground and in the air.
The debris rained down and was instantly incinerated by a burst of fire from Cang Wu, leaving only clean ashes.
The spirit deer squinted its eyes slightly, speaking with some displeasure, “Please do not struggle. I will lead you to see my master. By receiving the immortal’s inheritance, you will immediately be able to break through the realm and become unconquerable powerhouses.”
“Inheritance?” Lord Lan Shan curled her lips. “As expected of the secret realm that cultivators fight tooth and nail to enter; immortal inheritances are everywhere.”
Upon hearing this, the spirit deer thought she was interested and took a step forward. “Is this Immortal Friend willing to…”
Before it could finish speaking, a white and gold figure abruptly appeared before it, followed closely by a murderous chained blade.
Cang Wu single-handedly formed a claw, heading straight for the pair of antlers on the spirit deer’s head.
The spirit deer calmly transformed into a mist on the spot, then materialized into a human form in front of the two. She wore a light green gauze dress, flowing like an immortal, with long, curly hair draped loosely and a pair of antlers atop her head.
Raising her hand to touch her antlers, Lin Shen pointed at the two cultivators who immediately started fighting and angrily said, “How can you be so impolite? I was kindly trying to help you, so how can you attack me?”
“Help us?” Cang Wu glanced coldly at the ready-to-move vines around them and sneered, “Is this how you help us?”
Lin Shen pouted, her voice softening a little. “I was just playing with you.”
“Since everyone has been drawn into this strange place, why don’t we look for a way out together?” Lord Lan Shan tentatively suggested. The situation was unclear at the moment; having an extra friend was better than having an extra enemy.
Lin Shen rolled her eyes and readily agreed. “Alright!”
“My name is Lin Shen, what are yours?”
“Lord Lan Shan,” Lord Lan Shan saw that Cang Wu was unwilling to speak and answered for her. “This is my Junior Sister, Cang Wu.”
Lin Shen nodded, came merrily toward Lord Lan Shan, and was avoided before she could even reach out her hand.
Lord Lan Shan gave her a polite smile. Lin Shen also smiled and lowered her hand.
Cang Wu stared coldly at her. “Deer Demon, what did you mean by ‘inheritance’ just now?”
“What Deer Demon? That sounds awful. I have a name; I’m Lin Shen,” Lin Shen introduced herself seriously, then lowered her head, looking a little embarrassed. “Actually, you can call me Little Deer Immortal, too.”
She laughed happily to herself after speaking.
Cang Wu twitched the corner of her lips. “Immortal?”
Lin Shen heard the disdain in her voice and stared at her with wide, round eyes, but since she was shorter than Cang Wu, she had to forcefully look up.
“I don’t like the way you talk, Little Azure Dragon.”
Cang Wu’s pupils suddenly narrowed into fine slits, and scales faintly appeared around her eyes. “Do I need your approval?”
As she spoke, she glanced at her Senior Sister on the side, her eyes becoming smug.
“Stop arguing for now,” Lord Lan Shan stood between them to separate them. “Let’s figure out how to get out.”
“Get out? I know how,” Lin Shen puffed out her chest, waiting to be asked.
“Really? You’re not trying to trick us into getting some ‘immortal inheritance’?” Cang Wu asked suspiciously.
Lin Shen annoyedly stomped her foot. “I lied to you before, but this time I’m not! I really know how to get out!”
Seeing that Lord Lan Shan and Cang Wu were still hesitating, Lin Shen gritted her teeth, grabbed them, and walked. “Hurry up! If we don’t leave now, Granny will find out.”
Lord Lan Shan and Cang Wu were both too tall for Lin Shen, so she struggled to pull them. Eventually, the two of them just walked quickly.
Lord Lan Shan asked doubtfully, “Granny? You didn’t come in alone? Why don’t you take your Granny with you?”
“Lin Shen.” A deep, aged voice suddenly came from behind.
Lin Shen’s scalp tightened. She immediately transformed into her original form, carrying both of them on her back and dashing out.
Cang Wu held the woman’s waist with one hand from behind and placed the other hand on the spirit deer’s antler. If this Deer Demon entertained any malicious thoughts toward them, she would instantly snap off its antler.
“Don’t grab my antler!” Lin Shen protested unhappily.
Lord Lan Shan wanted to remind her that walking straight would not get them out, when Lin Shen suddenly changed direction and began turning repeatedly. Her movements were swift and familiar, as if she were navigating an invisible path.
This time, Lord Lan Shan saw the shadow of the tree canopy and finally saw a sunlit area. Ahead was a vast, distant cliff, and Lin Shen sprinted, preparing to leap across it.
“Hold on tight.”
Cang Wu tightened her grip around the woman’s waist, speaking close to her ear, “Senior Sister, you can hold on to me.”
Lord Lan Shan compressed her lips and grasped the hand resting on her waist.
The moment they leapt across the cliff, countless vines chased after them from behind, but they were a moment too late. The vines seemed restricted by some boundary and could not cross the cliff.
“Lin Shen, come back!”
Hearing her Granny’s command, Lin Shen regretfully looked back. She put down Lord Lan Shan and Cang Wu, transformed back into human form, placed her hand beside her cheek, and shouted, “Granny, I’ll be back once I find the Seed of Life! You don’t need to worry!”
The half-withered, half-green vines waved across the cliff. Realizing she could not bring Lin Shen back, they slowly retracted and departed from the cliff.
Seeing the vines disappear, Lin Shen wiped away her tears and bowed deeply toward the dark depths on the other side.
“Seed of Life? What is that?” Lord Lan Shan asked.
She looked at Lin Shen, feeling that there was something indescribably strange about this Little Deer Demon.
Lin Shen inhaled and straightened up, pointing them in a direction. “If you go that way, you can leave the Vine Forest. After leaving the Vine Forest, you will reach the Underground Volcano. There should be people like you there.”
“People like us?” Lord Lan Shan raised her eyebrows. “So, you are not a Deer Demon from the Four Seas; you were originally from the Realm of Guixu.”
Lin Shen wrinkled her nose. “I told you not to call me a Deer Demon. I am Lin Shen, the Little Deer Immortal.”
“I never said where I am from. Besides, I’ve already brought you out and told you where to go.”
“A little liar who never speaks the truth,” Cang Wu scoffed lightly. “What if you’re pointing us toward the wrong path?”
Lin Shen looked up and glared at her, but was defeated in the staring contest. “Then I’ll escort you out of the Vine Forest, alright!”
With that, she transformed into a deer again. Cang Wu winked at Lord Lan Shan.
The spirit deer sped quickly through the forest. Lord Lan Shan felt that she seemed to be in a great hurry.
“Lin Shen, if you have urgent business, we can go by ourselves.”
This time, Lin Shen did not seem to be lying to them.
“I, the Little Deer Immortal, keep my promises; I will definitely send you out,” Lin Shen increased her speed even more.
“Watch out!”
Cang Wu’s expression suddenly changed, and Lin Shen also reacted extremely quickly, her figure flickering past. A fire arrow shot straight into a vine-covered tree nearby. The tree instantly ignited and burned, scattering ashes all over the ground.
Lin Shen stopped and looked in the direction the arrow came from.
A woman stood on a large eagle in mid-air, a fire arrow poised in her hand.
Seeing the woman, Lin Shen’s breathing instantly became rapid. Before the next arrow arrived, she turned and ran in another direction with the two of them.
The fire arrows kept coming from behind, always narrowly shooting past Lin Shen’s hooves.
Lord Lan Shan looked back. The woman stood on the eagle, calmly preparing the next arrow, her eyes filled with the interest of a predator playing with its prey.
The next moment, her figure flickered several times, and in the blink of an eye, she was in front of Lord Lan Shan.
Cang Wu swiped a palm toward the woman, using the opportunity to pull her Senior Sister to her side.
“Don’t fight her! You can’t win against her,” Lin Shen said anxiously.
Unfortunately, it was already too late. A huge suction force pulled Lord Lan Shan and Cang Wu toward the woman. Lin Shen was forced to stop.
“Shen Hui! You were looking for me, weren’t you? Let them go!” Lin Shen shouted from a distance.
Shen Hui watched the two getting closer, chuckling lowly. “Do you think you can escape today?”
Cang Wu firmly grasped Lord Lan Shan’s hand, palm against the back of her hand, and instantly unleashed the Hidden Blood Art.
In Shen Hui’s astonished eyes, Cang Wu’s pupils turned blood red.
“Courting death.”
Shen Hui could not see the surroundings, but murderous intent surrounded her everywhere.
A chill passed through her fingers; the wind was rising.
Just as the chained blade came through the air, Shen Hui felt a sword pressing against her back as well.
“Clang—”
The clash of blades and swords sparked fire. On the other side, the chained blade was entangled by a curved dao.
