- Chapter 103 - A Tender Sprout Erupts from the Blood-Soaked Mud
Changze Mountain was a stretch of continuous mountain ranges, large enough that even with Cangwu and the others each searching a peak, there were still some left over.
The newly grown spirit herbs on the mountain were too young and difficult to distinguish. Trying to find the herbs Elder Yu needed among them was like searching for a needle in a haystack.
Yet, the figures on those peaks kept bending over, searching, without a hint of impatience or annoyance.
Cangwu asked Zhaochen if there was a way to forcefully expel the soul. Zhaochen told her that either one’s cultivation level must be extremely profound, or one must be proficient in arcane formations and secret techniques to use a formation to draw out the soul. However, this method was not orthodox, and Fuyu Isle had designated such formations as forbidden techniques, meaning few people knew them.
The only person here with sufficiently high cultivation was Elder Yu, and not only was she injured beforehand, but she would probably be unwilling to forcefully expel a soul.
Furthermore, if Elder Yu were to find out about the relationship between Senior Sister and Lan Yan, and the matter of forced possession was involved, things would become even more complicated.
[As you said, Lan Yan already showed herself when ascending the three thousand steps, but Lanshan Jun preemptively seized the physical body. Since then, they have been a single body with dual souls,] the Spirit King scoffed coldly. [How can a rotten person like Lan Yan have a chance to live again? Lanshan Jun is also foolish. After seizing the body, she didn’t immediately shatter her soul; how could she let her remain until now?]
Cangwu let go of the spirit herb between her fingers and frowned: “You think everyone is as indiscriminately bloodthirsty as you are?”
[If it were you, would you have kept her?] the Spirit King retorted.
Cangwu pressed her lips together and did not answer.
With a few laughs, the Spirit King said, [You wouldn’t. You would be the same as me—leaving no future troubles.]
“Senior Sister has her own considerations,” Cangwu asserted firmly.
[Yes, she has considerations, but did she consider the fact that she’s now half-dead, giving Lan Yan an advantage for free?] The Spirit King’s words were filled with sarcasm and contempt. She inwardly scorned Lanshan Jun’s temperament. If she were in Lanshan Jun’s place, she would grip Lanshan Jun’s hand and take up a sword to kill all those who were disobedient and disrespectful.
Thinking this, the Spirit King felt a flicker of anticipation—anticipation for warm blood covering the woman’s hands, splattering onto the woman’s gentle brows and eyes, watching her panic, fear, and helplessness.
Just as Cangwu’s face turned cold, she suddenly heard a faint cry of surprise, not far from her location.
Apart from them, there should be no one else on Changze Mountain right now.
With a light push of her toes, she floated up, avoiding the spirit herbs newly sprouted on the ground, and sped towards the source of the sound.
A strange, earthy stench gradually filled the air, and the whistling wind in her ears was mixed with the sibilant sound of a chilling creature.
At the furthest distance Cangwu could see, smoke and dust billowed up from the opposite mountainside. The rising dust covered most of the people and objects on the mountain. Occasionally, sparks of fire flew out, and traces of spiritual power collision were left hanging in the air.
As she got closer, the hissing sound became clearer.
It was a snake.
Snakes prefer damp, shady places. The area was subject to the Spiritual Fire’s scorching heat, which had not yet fully dispersed. How could a snake be coiling here?
With doubts in her heart, Cangwu used her spiritual power to push the dust aside, plunging entirely into the smoke.
Visibility was low in the dust. Cangwu’s pupils slowly changed, but before she could see anyone clearly, a tail lashed out directly.
Bending down to dodge the tail, she turned her head just in time for a snake’s head to open its mouth wide and bite toward her. Its saliva mixed with the scorched earth emitted a fishy stench.
Cangwu, who had intended to raise her hand to block, instantly changed her action. She sharply lifted her leg and kicked the snake’s head. The clear sound of bone breaking rang out. With a backhand swing, Cangwu lashed out with the chain-blade, its gold and silver threads intertwined, carrying a murderous aura.
Following the muffled thud of the giant creature collapsing, Cangwu landed on her toes. The chain-blade slowly wrapped around itself with a twist of her wrist, taking the shape of a sword.
The hilt flipped between her fingers. Cangwu injected spiritual power, then violently swung out a burst of sword qi.
The sword qi spread, pushing the smoke and dust aside.
With a clear line of sight, Cangwu could finally see what had just attacked her: a huge Black-bellied Scarlet-Gold Serpent. Its head and tail combined were probably the size of a small hill if coiled.
“Hiss—!”
Its cold, vertically-slit pupils locked onto Cangwu. The wings on either side of the snake’s head spread and trembled. The scarlet snake-tongue flickered out: “Since you are of the same kind, I do not wish to harm you. Leave this place immediately.”
Cangwu had not revealed the Azure Dragon aura. The serpent saw her similar vertical pupils and mistook her for a snake demon.
Excluding the Four-Directions and some ancient great demons with inherited bloodlines, other demon races would require at least a century or more to cultivate into human form.
“It can talk? It seems you’ve been cultivating for quite a few years,” Cangwu sneered, her eyes full of disdain. “Who told you I was of the same kind? Do you even qualify?”
As she spoke, Cangwu slowly revealed her semi-demon form. The moment it saw the dragon horns, the colossal serpent’s eyes shook violently.
“Azure… Lord Azure Dragon…”
Demonic qi misted around the giant serpent. In a moment, a woman with a pale face and dark lips stood before Cangwu. She raised her hands and performed a respectful salute of the serpent clan.
After the salute, the woman looked at Cangwu with joy: “Lord Azure Dragon, are you here because you have succeeded? Master Liu has not given me news for a long time, but Xun Qi has waited patiently.”
Cangwu frowned, contemplating her words but offering no response.
Succeeded at what? And the Liu family?
Xun Qi looked up at Cangwu, stuck out her tongue and licked her lower lip, then suddenly launched an attack: “You are not Lord Azure Dragon! You seek death!”
Cangwu blocked with her sword. Then, with her other hand pressing against the back of the sword hand, she abruptly increased her strength. Xun Qi gritted her teeth and retreated a step.
“Who is the Lord Azure Dragon you speak of? The Azure Dragon Hall Master?” Cangwu asked aloud.
Xun Qi did not answer. She transformed back into her original form. The enormous snake body coiled around Cangwu, her head looking down from above at the person trapped by her body.
The residual fire below was still hot, severely restricting Cangwu’s Wood Spirit Root. Fortunately, she possessed more than just the Wood Spirit Root.
The moment flames enveloped the sword body, a deep color burned in Cangwu’s eyes as well.
As the giant serpent began to coil tighter, Cangwu stepped onto the snake’s body. The tip of her sword scraped against the serpent’s scales, sending sparks flying as if steel were colliding with steel. An ear-piercing sound exploded, and a deep sword mark was carved onto the giant serpent’s body.
[Now is the time! Devour it! Your cultivation will advance another stage in no time!]
Cangwu heard the Spirit King’s words, and the momentum of her sword paused for a fraction of a second. In that critical moment, the giant serpent found its chance, opening its mouth wide to swallow the person whole.
The sword in her hand instantly transformed into a chain, wrapping around Cangwu in a spherical shape to protect her.
“Break!”
In the crucial instant, a talisman flew rapidly towards the giant serpent’s mouth, then burst into blinding white light, followed by an explosion and the spreading of a thick, bloody smell.
The giant serpent let out a sound of painful fury. Cangwu’s figure flashed, dodging to the side.
Heavy panting sounds came from behind her. Cangwu glanced back and saw Mu Fuan, covered head-to-toe in dirt.
“Cangwu, are you alright?” Mu Fuan looked at her with worry.
Cangwu shook her head, turning her gaze to the giant serpent, which had just been blasted in the mouth by the talisman. A gash had been ripped open on the serpent’s head, bleeding profusely. Its one remaining eye was now bloodshot and terrifying, eager to devour the two people before it.
The giant serpent swiveled its enormous vertical pupil, finally settling on Mu Fuan. Its snake tongue flickered faster and faster. It spoke with surprise: “A member of the Ming Clan?”
Cangwu looked at Mu Fuan, whose eyes were full of confusion.
“Can’t even kill properly,” the giant serpent said impatiently, finally swooping down fiercely.
Mu Fuan’s expression changed. She quickly dodged, but the giant serpent pursued her relentlessly, and smoke and dust rose again around them.
With a burst of killing intent, the giant serpent continuously spat fireballs while chasing Mu Fuan. The moment a fireball touched her magical robe, it burned a huge hole in Mu Fuan’s mostly useless garment. After a few jumps, Mu Fuan’s clothes were tattered.
Cangwu pursued the giant serpent, ready to seize an opportunity to strike a blow.
[If you hadn’t hesitated just now, she wouldn’t even have a snakeskin left, so why bother struggling now,] the Spirit King said quietly.
Cangwu’s gaze followed the figure ahead. She replied blandly, “Senior Sister told me not to listen to you.”
Spirit King: […]
Jumping onto a high rock, Mu Fuan turned and threw out a pile of talismans. Then, the moment the snake’s head lunged, she injected spiritual power into the talismans. They crackled and sparked before the snake’s head, flashing with lightning, but they were quickly scattered by the giant serpent’s spiritual power.
The snake’s head was close enough to touch, yet Mu Fuan showed no panic or fear of impending death. She forcefully twisted her waist, her arm narrowly brushing past the snake’s mouth, as a chain-blade plunged fast and accurately into the giant serpent’s eye. A spray of blood mist burst forth.
The giant serpent immediately crashed to the ground, twisting its body in agony. Its single remaining eye stared icily at the two people before it.
Mu Fuan panted, saying to Cangwu, “Thank you.”
Cangwu retrieved the chain-blade. Spiritual power flowed over it like water, cleansing the bloodstains instantly. Only then did she quietly reply with an “Mhm.”
The blow just now was infused with Dragon Breath. Cangwu controlled the Dragon Breath, forcing Xun Qi to transform into human form.
In her human form, Xun Qi was missing an eye, and her body was tormented by the Dragon Breath, making her wish she were dead. She fiercely bit her lip, and her body suddenly began to seep blood outwards.
[She’s going to self-destruct! Get away!]
Cangwu’s pupils suddenly contracted. The moment she turned to pull Mu Fuan away, Xun Qi’s body abruptly exploded. The spiritual power condensed within her body instantly diffused outward. The white light nearly enveloped the entire mountain peak. Hidden within the white light, a trace of spiritual power belonging to another person silently flew out of Changze Mountain.
“BOOM—!” With a tremendous crash, Lingguang and Mohuaisheng, hearing the commotion from the other side, hurried over.
By the time they arrived, that mountain had been reduced by half a size. The area that was once a cohesive mountain was now a “fake” mountain piled high with clumps of dirt.
“Mu Fuan?” Mohuaisheng called out. If she remembered correctly, Mu Fuan was responsible for the spirit herbs in this area. “Lingguang, try using your jade token to contact her.”
Her own jade token was already shattered.
Lingguang nodded, touching her finger to her jade token. A thread of spiritual power drilled into the token.
Halfway through the message, the spiritual power returned to Lingguang’s hand.
Unable to send a message. Mu Fuan’s jade token was also shattered.
Lingguang and Mohuaisheng looked up at each other simultaneously, their expressions equally solemn.
The commotion just now was not something caused by an ordinary fight.
Before the two could move to shift the soil and rocks, Lingguang’s jade token suddenly flickered.
She quickly picked it up. It was a message from Cangwu.
“We are inside.”
Amidst the pile of rocks, Cangwu struggled to prop up a small space with her arm. Earlier, she had seen Mu Fuan’s tattered robes; now she was the same, perhaps even worse. Her entire sleeve hung down in shreds. The part of her arm pressing against the rocks was right on a sharp point. Under the immense pressure, her dragon scales began to peel off, and drops of blood fell, soaking into the scorched earth.
Mu Fuan had a broken leg and was lying flat on the ground. She wanted to take out a pill from the small pouch in front of her to stop Cangwu’s bleeding, but she only felt a handful of powder.
Cangwu looked at the powder, which was essentially dirt. With her other hand, she reached into her Qiankun Pouch, pulled out a bottle of medicine, and tossed it to her.
Mu Fuan looked up at her in surprise. Cangwu was also bleeding from her head, the blood covering half her face, making her look extremely unwell.
Cangwu needed the medicine more than she did.
“You… you should take it instead.”
Cangwu glanced at her, took out another bottle from her Qiankun Pouch, and without blinking, poured all of it down her own throat.
Having regained some strength after taking the medicine, she said softly, “Does it take two people to share one bottle of medicine? My Senior Sister gave me plenty. You take this and eat it. Lingguang and the others will get us out soon.”
Mu Fuan awkwardly held the medicine bottle. Opening the cap, she could smell the fragrance of the pills, which were of a far better quality than her handful of powder.
Sounds of movement came from outside. It must be Lingguang and Mohuaisheng moving the rocks.
Cangwu lowered her gaze, staring at the soil soaked with blood on the ground. The blood flowing from her forehead, down her cheek, and to her chin fell drop by drop, all swallowed by the scorched earth.
Slowly closing her eyes, Cangwu felt a sense of fatigue.
She wasn’t sure if it was a delusion or something else, but a ray of light seemed to appear suddenly before her.
She opened her eyes and saw a tender sprout erupt from the blood-soaked mud.
