To the Man Destined to Kill Me - Chapter 110
Scarlett tried on two different necklaces, switching between them as she wondered which one looked better.
Behind her, Susan frowned and glared at Scarlett through the mirror.
“That place will be full of people who’ll just make you feel uncomfortable. Didn’t you say you wanted to live quietly? Why are you insisting on going?”
“You were the one who wanted me to live more actively. So why are you stopping me from going to the charity ball?”
“Because John White will be there!”
Scarlett’s eyes seemed to twitch at the name of the man she once loved like a brother. But she quickly stayed calm and chose the blue sapphire necklace.
“Feeling uncomfortable and being scared are two different things. John just makes me uncomfortable. I’m not afraid of him. So, you don’t have to worry.”
“I’m only worried you’ll get hurt.”
Scarlett’s eyebrows drooped at Susan’s worried voice. She turned around and looked Susan straight in the face.
“I’m okay.”
“Scarlett…”
“It’s been six years. That’s more than enough time to grow up. If I meet John there today, it’ll be a chance to prove that I don’t need him anymore. But thank you for worrying about me.”
After finishing her outfit with the necklace, she got up and caught Teddy, who was running down the hallway.
“Teddy, how many times did I tell you not to run in the hallway?”
“But Teddy’s happy because Mommy is so pretty today!”
Scarlett let out a small laugh and gently stroked his head as he hugged her and said something sweet to avoid being scolded.
“Mommy will be back soon. Go to bed early, okay?”
“Okay. Come home fast, Mommy!”
“If you listen to your aunt, I’ll be back early.”
Teddy, holding Susan’s hand, waved goodbye as Scarlett got on the carriage. As the carriage moved away and Teddy grew smaller in the distance, Scarlett let out a deep sigh.
Noah was planning revenge on the White family, and when he found out she was alive, he was furious. It was only a matter of time before he found out about Teddy, too.
She thought about telling Noah everything. But the fear that he might use Teddy in his revenge stopped her from telling the truth.
Her head was a mess, and her thoughts were spinning when the carriage came to a stop. As she stepped out with the help of a servant from the charity ball, she saw Amanda and John entering from across the way.
Scarlett thought the coincidence was a bit cruel.
“Scarlett, how have you been?”
Amanda walked over with a friendly smile. It was their first time meeting since Teddy’s entrance ceremony.
Even though some time had passed and their relationship might have warmed, Scarlett still felt uncomfortable—perhaps because John was standing beside Amanda.
“What about you, Amanda?”
Scarlett completely ignored John and didn’t look at him even once.
John silently studied his youngest sister’s face, unable to shake off his gloom. He noticed her calmer expression and small changes time had made over the six years.
Even after their brief conversation ended, he couldn’t take his eyes off Scarlett’s back as she walked in. Amanda gently held his hand, seeing the sorrow and regret on his face.
“Mandy, I realized it too late.”
“Realized what?”
“That she wasn’t someone I needed to protect.”
He didn’t regret following his mother’s dying wish. But there was one thing he couldn’t stop feeling sorry about—how he hadn’t considered Scarlett’s feelings.
If he hadn’t treated her like a child who needed shelter from everything, he might’ve made a different choice back then.
Just like how a person grows taller and stronger, she had grown into someone who could face anything. But he had failed to see that.
To him, Scarlett had been like his own daughter…
When Isaac heard that Scarlett was attending the charity auction, he used his friend—who happened to be the only son of the event host—to sneak in.
Isaac had two reasons for wanting to meet Scarlett.
One, to confirm whether Teddy, whom he thought of as a little brother, was really Theo Grisham—the son of Emperor Natalia. The other, to let Scarlett know he was doing well and had left the White family to live his own life.
“Ugh. This suit is too small.”
He had borrowed his friend’s tuxedo, but it was too short in the arms and legs. His friend just laughed and ignored his complaints.
“Hey, isn’t that your uncle over there?”
His friend pointed to John, who was talking with a businessman.
John had recently lost his lawyer’s license and resigned from office, yet he still showed up confidently in a crowd. It was exactly what the upper class was like.
In the elite society of Wifland, as long as you didn’t get publicly shamed, you were fine. Isaac turned his eyes away in disgust.
“There she is.”
He spotted Scarlett talking to the director of a private college.
As Isaac headed toward her, a loud commotion came from the entrance. His friend ran up, looking shocked.
“You won’t believe this. Emperor Natalia just made a surprise appearance!”
“…What?”
The day Isaac guessed the connection between Scarlett and Noah, he had run out of the hotel where Noah was staying.
He had many reasons to be grateful to Noah, but the way things had ended still felt uncomfortable to him.
Isaac crouched low and hurried to Scarlett. He poked her in the back.
“Auntie!”
“…Isaac?”
Scarlett’s eyes widened when she saw her nephew. Isaac grabbed her sleeve and pulled her toward the balcony.
“What have you been doing all this time? Noah—no, Theo—he didn’t threaten or hurt you, did he?”
“I’m fine. I left his hotel a long time ago.”
“You left?”
Isaac replied coldly. After carefully closing the thick curtains and checking that no one was around, he finally spoke more freely.
“Then where have you been staying? Do you know how worried your mom is?”
“I eat well, sleep well, and live fine.”
“Do you have money? When are you coming ho—”
Isaac cut her off.
“I’m not going back. I don’t want to.”
“…Did something happen?”
“I’m going far away. I want to start from the bottom. I hate the society I came from.”
Scarlett struggled to find words in her confusion. She stammered, trying to say something, but ended up just covering her mouth with her fingers.
“More than that, Auntie. I have a question—Theo, he…”
Isaac kept talking, but Scarlett—shocked by what he’d said earlier—didn’t hear him. She pulled her wallet from her bag and shoved all the cash she had into his pocket. That wasn’t enough—she even started to take off her earrings.
“Fine. Whether you start over or you’re just running away, just don’t starve. Stay safe… okay? So…”
“Auntie.”
“Whatever you do—business or whatever—you’ll need money. So…”
“Auntie!”
Scarlett couldn’t hold back her emotions anymore, and tears fell down her cheeks. She wiped them away and spoke in a trembling voice.
Though they were aunt and nephew, their age difference made them feel more like older and younger siblings. Seeing Scarlett cry made Isaac feel even worse.
“Wait… Just give me a moment.”
Isaac stepped behind a small column on the balcony so Scarlett could calm down, but not feel like he was leaving.
As her tears dried and her face returned to normal, the balcony curtain opened—and Noah appeared.
Scarlett turned, unaware of who it was, and began to excuse herself.
“I’m sorry, but I want to be alone for a moment—Noah?”
Realizing who it was, Scarlett froze and gripped the balcony railing.
“There you are, Scarlett.”
Isaac also froze in surprise at Noah’s voice and quickly hid. Scarlett, filled with anxiety, stood still.
She thought she had moved on. But now, seeing Isaac and Noah in the same space reminded her of the day she ran away with Isaac in her arms. Her hands tightened.
“If you want to talk, let’s go somewhere else.”
“Unfortunately, if people see us together, it’ll cause a lot of gossip.”
“Then why did you come to the party?”
“I didn’t know you’d be here.”
He shrugged as if it didn’t matter, and Scarlett’s expression turned cold.
“Let’s go to the garden or somewhere else. Not here.”
“It won’t take long. I just have something I want to say.”
“…What is it?”
“Hmm.”
His soft smile felt cold. He reached toward her.
His long fingers brushed her cheek, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. His gentle touch made her flinch.
“I still can’t forgive you.”
“That’s such a silly thing to say.”
“Haha.”
He let out a dry laugh, completely devoid of humor. His violet eyes turned cold.
“Yeah, that’s how you’ve always been. And yet… I’ve always missed you.”
He missed Noah. She missed him, and always would. That’s why she also hated him. She understood why he felt betrayed and pitied him—but still, she resented the cruel words he’d said.
Scarlett admitted it—she couldn’t handle her feelings for Noah.
They were deep, rooted in pain, watered by tears, and had grown into love. It had bloomed beyond hatred, so it wasn’t something she could let go of easily.
Even now, her heart raced and her stomach twisted. Trying to push those feelings away, she snapped even more coldly than she meant to.
“Stop talking nonsense. Just say what you came to say and get out of my sight.”
“…Fine.”
Noah stepped closer, until their breaths could almost touch. Cold but kind, gentle but firm, he spoke smoothly.
“I’m sorry for what I said last time.”
“…”
“I still need you.”
“…”
Scarlett’s eyes wavered. Noah whispered,
“I still can’t let you go. Come back to me, Scarlett.”
