To the Man Destined to Kill Me - Chapter 107
‘If you really loved me, you should have died back then.’
‘You should have died.’
His words pierced her heart like a dagger. Scarlett burst into tears inside the carriage. She had tried hard to forget her complicated feelings toward Noah.
She thought she had buried them well enough, but now that she faced him, everything collapsed so easily. It wasn’t even about the feelings she had left for him—she was just deeply hurt by the situation itself. Sad, bitter, and miserable.
‘You should have died back then.’
Even if Wilhelm didn’t understand, Noah knew the weight behind those words. He had seen her dying right before his eyes. Among all people, Noah was the one who hurt more than she did from her suffering.
“…How could you say that? How…”
Clatter clatter.
The sound of the carriage wheels sliding over the pavement covered her sobs.
As they neared home, Scarlett quickly wiped her face. She dried her tears and tried to hide her red, swollen eyes.
She didn’t want Susan to see her like this and get startled. Like how Isaac used to quietly come and go through the back door, Scarlett quietly returned to her room.
“Ah…”
Back in her room, Scarlett looked at herself in the mirror. Her swollen eyes and lips clearly showed that she had cried. And when she pulled down her clothes, the red marks on her shoulders were…
‘Get a grip, Scarlett.’
Scarlett lightly slapped her cheeks. She tried to rest and headed toward the bed, but gasped when she saw Teddy sleeping on it. He must have fallen asleep while playing—there were toys scattered all around.
Her lips trembled as she tried not to cry again. She walked to Teddy and gently stroked his sweaty head.
‘Noah, I’m sorry. I’m truly sorry.’
It was wrong to hide from him that he had a child, but for Teddy’s sake, she had to keep it secret from Noah.
The moment his existence was revealed and tied to the royal family of Natalia, Teddy would get swept into international affairs—whether he wanted to or not.
It wasn’t that she didn’t want to give him the child. She just couldn’t. She had to prevent that from happening.
‘If he had known I was pregnant before he left, would things have changed?’
She wanted to stop imagining these kinds of “what if” thoughts, but the pain and regret made her think of meaningless possibilities over and over.
‘Just focus on Teddy.’
Scarlett decided to only look at what she needed to protect. Teddy was her everything. Her son, Teddy White.
Before he turned back time, Andrew was a military chaplain.
In a place where bullets flew like light and bombs exploded constantly, he forgave the sins of dying soldiers and closed their eyes for them.
Even though time had turned back, that past didn’t disappear. The cold, stiff bodies and the pain-filled groans of the wounded couldn’t be forgotten.
“You’re here.”
After finishing his morning prayer, Andrew went straight to the White mansion and ran into Aaron reading a newspaper at the table.
“What scandal broke out today?”
Andrew spoke casually, like he was talking about someone else, and Aaron glared at him.
“The house feels gloomy. Has Isaac still not returned?”
“Scarlett went out to look for him, but I don’t know if she’s back yet.”
Aaron answered, unaware that Scarlett had secretly come home.
“You all live in the same house—show some interest in each other.”
“They’re all grown-ups. As long as they’re safe, it’s fine. If there’s a problem, it’s that runaway kid, Isaac. But he’s Susan’s responsibility, so don’t get involved. Parents should raise their own kids.”
Andrew tore off a piece of bread from the table and began eating as he said this.
“By the way, isn’t it this week? John’s hearing?”
This weekend at 11 o’clock, there would be a hearing for John White regarding the murder of Eric Thayerton.
If he got through this well, he could stay in the Senate like now. But if not, his political career would be seriously damaged. Public opinion was very negative.
Natalia had rapidly regained its former glory as the old empire, and Wifland needed to maintain political and economic ties with it.
Also, the visit of the young King Noah, who had overwhelming support from Natalia’s people, was putting more pressure on John White’s suspicious case.
“I don’t care what happens to that guy politically.”
Scott appeared, his hair slicked back and looking especially neat—clearly prepared for a day of reporters following him around.
“But I won’t allow the name ‘White’ to be associated with failure.”
“So, what are you going to do?”
“What else? I’m going to give Norton Newspaper a hard time. I just managed to leak the results of the chemical weapons we developed with Norton Chemicals. We’ve used it all, so it’s time to burn it.”
Andrew’s face twisted as he watched Scott poke at his salad with a grin.
“Taking without paying is the same as stealing.”
“Andrew, you cute little thing. The world we live in is a jungle. You’ll do anything to survive.”
“Aaron, betrayal isn’t necessary to survive. What you’re doing now is ‘revenge.’”
“If you really wanted to be a priest, you should have stayed in seminary.”
Offended by Scott’s mocking tone, Andrew stood up and stormed out. It wasn’t that he had wanted to leave the seminary.
He had only one year left until he could be ordained, but he left everything behind, worried that his brothers might start another war like in the past.
That’s why he saw stopping them as his duty—but at the same time, he couldn’t help but resent them.
Andrew stomped out to the hallway but then turned back toward the dining room. He wanted to yell at them for daring to talk about seminary when they had no idea what had happened because of their so-called ‘noble revenge.’
“…It seems that Noah Ashford is behind Norton.”
Aaron’s quiet muttering brought Andrew back to his senses, like cold water had been poured over him.
The future had already changed in many ways. Scarlett, who should have been killed by Noah Ashford, survived and even gave birth. Wasn’t it around this time in the past life that the war had already started?
It wasn’t right to be angry about things that hadn’t happened.
‘But… I can’t let it happen again.’
Andrew quietly left the room. When time turned back, something had clearly changed.
He believed that change was either Scarlett or Noah Ashford. The reason his brothers were acting differently from their past lives began with Scarlett and Noah.
‘She said one day she suddenly approached Noah Ashford, right?’
In the previous life, Scarlett died without even knowing who Noah Ashford was. So something unexpected must have happened to her. He guessed…
‘I didn’t ask you because I was afraid my existence would ruin your peace.’
Andrew suspected a lot about Scarlett, but he never asked her anything. If he hinted that he knew something, Scarlett would have asked him questions too.
Among those questions would surely be what happened after he died in the last life. He wasn’t confident he could lie about that—because the truth was too horrible to cover up.
‘In the end, I’ll have to step in. I just need to be ready… just me…’
Maybe that’s why God gave him another chance.
Andrew went to the hotel where Noah was staying.
When Andrew saved Noah, Noah had introduced himself as Peter Schwalter and said he worked at the embassy. A few days ago, Andrew wrote a letter asking to meet Peter Schwalter and the reply said he could come by the hotel anytime.
At the hotel, Andrew asked for Peter Schwalter as Noah had told him. After a short wait, Noah came down to the lobby.
“Jack. Thanks for coming.”
“Sorry for coming during dinner time.”
“No, not at all. Have you eaten?”
When Andrew nodded, Noah smiled in relief.
“I just finished dinner myself. More importantly, did something happen? I hope it’s not bad news.”
“Ah… actually, it’s related to why I came here…”
“Please speak freely.”
“I…”
He hesitated, clearly troubled by something.
“You said you worked at the Natalia embassy, right?”
“Yes, that’s correct.”
“The truth is… I used to be one of Scott White’s secretaries.”
“Scott White?”
Seeing Noah’s sharp eyes, Andrew calmly continued lying.
“Yes. But… as you know, his personality is terrible. I made a small mistake and was banned from coming to work indefinitely. Basically, I was fired.”
After pausing, Andrew spoke again.
“They said I could return if I gained experience at a reputable place like Cravitz, the defense contractor. So I thought of you. I was hoping to get at least a month of experience, even in a temporary job, at the embassy…”
“No need to say more. Jack, I understand your situation.”
Noah had thought he was the White family’s gardener, but maybe he was wrong. Either way, it didn’t matter.
What mattered was that Scott White’s former secretary was trying to work near him. This could mean Scott was planting a spy—or it could mean Scott used his secretary for personal chores.
Either way, a former secretary of Scott White could be a useful card.
“I’ll find you a job.”
Andrew had lied, knowing Noah would want to keep him close to gather information. He faked a surprised expression, hiding his satisfaction.
“If you worked for Scott White, you must be very capable.”
“I can speak Mamnukean, Catalosian, and Old Language.”
Andrew handed over a prepared document. After scanning it, Noah gave it back and confessed:
“Actually, I do need another secretary.”
Peter was already overwhelmed with watching Isaac, gathering intel on the White family and Scarlett, and handling official work. Even three bodies wouldn’t be enough.
Hiring someone who wasn’t from Natalia was risky, but for simple schedule organizing, it could work.
As Noah’s smile deepened, he followed it with the confession that he was actually the emperor of Natalia. And so, Andrew became Noah’s temporary secretary under the name “Jack.”
