Three Sentences That Made My Ex-Wife Spit Blood - Chapter 71
The tension lingered for a full minute.
Wen Huaxi froze in place, her neck stiff. Her heart skipped a beat as the stunning face of the person she loved suddenly drew closer. She didn’t even dare to blink, afraid that if she closed her eyes and opened them again, Yan Qinglan’s lips would be touching hers.
This was not the first time Yan Qinglan had done something like this.
Wen Huaxi suddenly recalled the early days of this life. During the time she was trying to divorce Yan Qinglan, whenever Yan didn’t want to hear her speak, she would get physically close and distract her with affection.
And now, Wen Huaxi realized what was happening. Yan Qinglan was trying to manipulate her again.
While Wen Huaxi was still processing this, Yan Qinglan leaned in without hesitation. She gently touched the tip of her nose to Wen Huaxi’s and gave her a quick, feather-light kiss on the cheek.
Wen Huaxi immediately pushed her away.
“You ambushed me!” she shouted, covering the spot where she had been kissed. Her face flushed as if burned, and she glared at Yan Qinglan like someone suffering from a bad toothache.
“How can something that comes from overwhelming emotion be called an ambush?” Yan Qinglan replied, pressing her fingers to her forehead. “Xiao Xi, didn’t you like it?”
Seeing Yan Qinglan still pretending to be vulnerable, Wen Huaxi puffed up her cheeks in frustration. She nearly bit her in anger.
“I did not like it. No more surprises. Until I’ve cooled down, you are not allowed to hug me, and definitely not allowed to kiss me.”
Yan Qinglan raised her hands in surrender. “Alright. But you can still hug me. You can still kiss me.”
“Who wants to kiss you? You really know how to flatter yourself,” Wen Huaxi snorted. She turned her head away, ignoring her, and focused on eating.
Yan Qinglan calmly wiped her hands and started placing food onto Wen Huaxi’s plate.
At first, Wen Huaxi still ate what was served. But then she noticed what was happening. Each time Yan Qinglan added something, she would push it aside.
She even stuck out her tongue at her in a childish manner.
Yan Qinglan found this amusing and wanted to see how long Wen Huaxi could keep it up, so she kept adding more food to her plate.
When the bowl in front of Wen Huaxi was completely covered in dishes, she threw down her chopsticks with a loud clatter.
“I’m going home to eat.”
If Yan Qinglan didn’t want her to eat, fine. She would leave.
She was furious. Did Yan Qinglan think she had no temper and could be teased so easily?
Wen Huaxi grabbed her bag, ready to take her daughter Wen Qingxun and walk out.
Yan Qinglan finally stopped teasing her and reached out to hold her back.
“I was wrong.”
“Wrong about what? You always do this. I haven’t even forgiven you, and you’re already trying to mess with me again?” Wen Huaxi threw her bag at her.
Yan Qinglan let out a soft sigh. “I just missed you.”
“Missing me doesn’t help. I missed you so much in my last life. Did you ever care back then?”
As she spoke, Wen Huaxi pulled her hand away from Yan Qinglan’s grip. She walked over to the crib and picked up their baby.
“I’m sorry,” Yan Qinglan said, filled with regret. The past could not be undone, and even now, she still didn’t know how to make things right.
Even if she treated Wen Huaxi well from now on, would that really erase the years of neglect and indifference?
Judging from Wen Huaxi’s reaction, it clearly could not. At least not yet.
“You should have thought of that earlier.”
No matter what Yan Qinglan said or did, Wen Huaxi had already made up her mind. She was not staying for dinner.
Yan Qinglan had been given a chance and had ruined it.
Wen Huaxi would go home and enjoy her meal in peace, spend time with her sister, and play with her baby without the presence of that frustrating woman.
As Wen Huaxi walked out the door, Yan Qinglan stood there looking helpless.
Maybe it was only today that she finally realized Wen Huaxi was truly angry.
This was not the kind of anger that came with jokes or playful arguments. It was not something that could be smoothed over with shameless flirting or kisses.
Even if Wen Huaxi still had feelings for her, that could never erase the pain she had once endured.
“Can we at least talk once a day on the phone?” Yan Qinglan asked. She did not know what else to say or do.
She wanted to reach for Wen Huaxi again, but she was afraid to come any closer. She feared that one more step would make Wen Huaxi hate her even more.
Wen Huaxi paused, holding her daughter. She turned around.
She brushed her hair behind her ear and gave Yan Qinglan a smile.
“No. Leave me alone.”
Yan Qinglan felt her heart drop. The ache was unbearable, as if a sharp needle had pierced the only soft place left in her chest. She clutched at her heart and watched as Wen Huaxi walked away.
She returned alone to what used to be their shared home.
The cat and the baby had both been taken away by Wen Huaxi.
In the large, empty house, there was not a single trace of Wen Huaxi left.
Only the two bowls on the dining table, still warm from their argument, remained. One of them still held Wen Huaxi’s warmth and a faint scent of her presence.
Yan Qinglan sat in the chair that Wen Huaxi used to sit in. She picked up the spoon and ate slowly, bite by bite, gradually increasing her speed.
Eventually, she choked on the food and threw the spoon down.
No wonder Xiao Xi refused to stay. The food really did taste terrible.
Yan Qinglan slumped in her chair and blinked as tears rolled silently down her cheeks.
Five minutes after leaving, Wen Huaxi had already calmed down.
Holding little Wen Qingxun in her arms, she poked her gently, then rubbed her cheek and sighed.
“This relationship really is a mess. How did I ever end up falling for Yan Qinglan?”
Even with a second chance at life, she still could not escape from it.
But to be fair, not all of the memories were bad.
There was that moment when Yan Qinglan saved her, and the excitement of their last month together.
The baby in her arms suddenly made a cooing sound.
Wen Huaxi kissed her on the cheek.
“Sweetheart, my lovely daughter. Do you like your Mommy?”
Wen Qingxun was silent for a few seconds.
Then she pouted and made a soft groaning sound.
“You don’t like her either? I don’t like her either. The two of us are the real family here. Let’s toss Yan Qinglan aside and go live our carefree lives together.”
Wen Huaxi cheered herself up with that thought.
She would not let Yan Qinglan’s sad face soften her heart. This was the punishment she deserved for the coldness she had shown in their previous life. If Wen Huaxi gave in now, she would lose.
Wen Qingxun listened carefully to her mother’s words, gave a few happy murmurs, and leaned in close to snuggle.
She had already spent ten years with Yan Qinglan and was more than tired of seeing her face.
She fully supported her mother in kicking Yan Qinglan out and enjoying life on her own.
The next day, after being unconscious for nearly two days, Yan Mingzhu finally woke up.
As soon as Yan Qinglan received the news, she rushed to the hospital.
On the way there, she checked her reflection in the car mirror to make sure her expression looked normal and not like a lifeless ghost.
She could not let her personal issues with Wen Huaxi add any more stress to Yan Mingzhu, who was already unwell.
Now that she could remember those four painful years from her past life, she was especially concerned for her mother.
If things went the same way as before, Yan Mingzhu had only about a year left. If she could not find Gu Lian and resolve the restriction placed on her, she would lose her mother again.
But Yan Mingzhu understood her daughter far too well.
She gently touched Yan Qinglan’s face. Her voice was still weak.
“Did you argue with Xiaoxi?”
“Mom,” Yan Qinglan held her mother’s hand, “please don’t worry.”
She had overlooked something important. Wen Huaxi’s absence spoke volumes.
No matter how calm she tried to appear, it was obvious that Wen Huaxi had refused to come to the hospital.
“I’m already old. I’m in my sixties. If I don’t worry about you two, what else am I supposed to do?”
Yan Mingzhu waved her hand slowly.
“Tell me. What did you do this time to upset that girl?”
“I never made her angry before,” Yan Qinglan mumbled. She knew her mother had no idea what had happened in the past.
Yan Mingzhu gave her a sharp, disapproving look.
“With that temper of yours? If it happened once, it definitely happened more than once. You must have done something wrong.”
“I did. That’s why she’s so angry now. She won’t even talk to me.” Yan Qinglan lowered her head. Just remembering it made her want to cry again. Wen Huaxi had even told her to get lost.
“Then go and make it right. Yan Qinglan, don’t tell me you’re thinking about a divorce. You already have a child together.”
Yan Mingzhu’s voice grew firm. She used her full name, which startled Yan Qinglan.
“Mom, no. I would never. I tried to make it up to her, but I did it the wrong way. I just made her even angrier.”
Yan Qinglan panicked. Her voice became heavier, filled with frustration and sadness.
In the end, it all turned into hurt. Wen Huaxi had not spoken to her all day.
Although she had not blocked her, she had not replied to any of her messages either.
At that moment, the door to the hospital room opened.
Wen Huaxi walked in, holding a basket of fruit.
She did not even glance at Yan Qinglan. She placed the basket on the bedside table, then sat down in the nearest seat she could find.
“Xiaoxi,” Yan Qinglan said, unsure how much she had heard.
Wen Huaxi let out a cold snort. Before Yan Qinglan could try to get closer, she turned around and pinched her ear.
“You didn’t even tell me something as important as Mom waking up?”
She lowered her voice.
“You’re really something.”
Yan Qinglan had sent her so many meaningless messages, but not a word about something serious. That only made it worse.
Yan Qinglan leaned in toward her.
“I just thought you were really upset last night and didn’t want to bother you.”
“I’m sorry, Xiaoxi. I really didn’t know what to do. This is the first time I’ve ever tried to comfort someone. The first real relationship I’ve ever had. I honestly thought if I acted that way, you would talk to me again.”
As she spoke, her nose twitched. She sniffled quietly.
The pain in her chest had not faded. Without Wen Huaxi’s embrace, she knew it would still hurt just as much the next day.
“I’m not pretending to be weak. I’m really hurting.” Yan Qinglan explained gently.
Seeing how pitiful she looked, Wen Huaxi let go of her ear. She tilted her chin and gave a cold snort.
On the bed, Yan Mingzhu observed their interaction with interest.
“Xiaoxi, if she bullies you, just tell me. I’ll deal with her for you,” she offered, frustrated by how emotionally clueless her daughter was.
Back in her youth, she had been in love too. Everything with her partner had gone smoothly. Her girlfriend had not been emotionally dense like this one. How had she ended up with a daughter so thick-headed?
“Mom, just focus on your recovery. This is between the two of us. We’ll work it out,” Wen Huaxi said, trying to reassure her.
Yan Mingzhu smiled, but then turned to glare at Yan Qinglan again.
A daughter who did not know how to cherish her wife. She had such a good partner, and yet she still took her for granted. If she kept this up, one day she might lose her for good.
That thought hit hard, and Yan Mingzhu suddenly fell silent. She stared out the window, her mind elsewhere.
After spending some time chatting with her, Wen Huaxi left in a rush.
Yan Mingzhu gave Yan Qinglan a meaningful look.
Yan Qinglan quickly ran after her, but came back ten minutes later.
“Why are you back already? Don’t come back unless you’ve made up with your wife,” Yan Mingzhu scolded. She sounded disappointed.
“She doesn’t want me to follow her. I asked her more than once. She was serious. Yesterday, I thought I was trying to cheer her up, and I thought she was just teasing me back. But she was actually really upset.”
Yan Qinglan’s eyes were low. Her entire face was filled with regret.
“I honestly don’t even want to talk to you,” Yan Mingzhu said as she closed her eyes, clearly signaling that the conversation was over.
“Mom, did you ever fall in love when you were younger?”
“I’m still young now,” Yan Mingzhu replied as she picked up a banana from the fruit basket and lightly smacked Yan Qinglan with it.
Who was it just moments ago calling herself an old woman with brittle bones?
Yan Qinglan had no words. She took the banana from her mother and began peeling it for her.
“You’re already an adult. I guess there’s no harm in telling you. I did love a girl once. She was incredible. Truly. No one I’ve ever met could compare to her.”
Yan Mingzhu’s eyes grew distant. As she looked at the parts of Yan Qinglan that did not resemble herself, she saw another person in her mind.
Only at that moment did Yan Mingzhu feel her age.
Thirty years had passed, and she could barely remember the face of the woman she had once loved so deeply.
That was partly because of the curse that woman had left behind.
Yan Mingzhu wiped at her eyelids. In the end, she had not even managed to keep a single photograph of the one she loved.
“Then why didn’t you end up together?” Yan Qinglan asked, taking the opportunity to push back after her mother had just criticized her earlier.
Yan Mingzhu gently patted her daughter’s head.
“No matter how powerful I am, I can’t marry someone who is no longer alive.”
Yan Qinglan froze. Her heart tightened when she saw the strangely gentle smile on her mother’s face.
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright. At least I still have you.”
Back then, everything had been going well.
If Yan Qinglan had asked the older relatives in the family, she would have learned that more than thirty years ago, Yan Mingzhu had a girlfriend. They had even started discussing wedding plans.
But no one knew what happened. One day, the woman simply disappeared, leaving behind a pregnant Yan Mingzhu.
To protect her reputation, and because she was unwilling to talk about it, Yan Mingzhu claimed that Yan Qinglan was the result of a sperm donation.
From that point on, Yan Mingzhu never dated anyone else.
“Even though you can be infuriating sometimes, you are the daughter of me and the woman I loved. Your facial features and the way you carry yourself look just like her.”
Even while reminiscing, Yan Mingzhu could not resist taking a jab at her.
“You really are a wonderful mother,” Yan Qinglan replied with an eye roll.
At this point, everything was becoming clearer to Yan Qinglan. She was starting to understand why she had agreed to switch babies back then and take in the girl who was used as bait, the one people had believed was her biological daughter.
If she really was the child of Yan Mingzhu and her first love, it made sense.
Yan Qinglan thought about her own situation. No matter how much she loved her baby girl, if someone brought her proof one day that the child she had with Wen Huaxi was lost out there, she would bring that girl home without hesitation.
“Now that I think about it, maybe the reason you’re so emotionally clueless is because your other mother wasn’t around. That’s probably why you can’t even comfort your wife properly.”
Yan Mingzhu looked at her daughter with genuine disappointment. She was not afraid to show just how much she considered herself a true mother.
“Mom,” Yan Qinglan groaned. How could her own mother attack her just because her love life was a mess?
“I do have a question though. That so-called younger brother of mine. You know he can’t possibly be your biological child, right?” Yan Qinglan had been holding onto this question for a long time.
Other people’s babies acted as matchmakers. Wen Qingxun, on the other hand, was all about causing chaos.
Hurry up and dump her already. Fan the flames and push her out the door.
