Three Sentences That Made My Ex-Wife Spit Blood - Chapter 59
“Uh…” Wen Huaxi didn’t know how to respond right away.
She hesitated for a moment, and by the time she could think of saying the gift was for a friend’s child, it already seemed too late.
Yu Xiyun narrowed her eyes, thinking back to the days they were filming together and how Wen Huaxi’s figure had subtly changed.
Three seconds later, she turned to Yan Qinglan with a cold stare.
“You really are a hypocrite. So what if you like her? Did you really have to get her pregnant just to be with her?”
Yu Xiyun’s words left Wen Huaxi stunned. She was too shocked to speak. Yan Qinglan slowly looked away from Wen Huaxi and turned toward Yu Xiyun.
This old rival, who had gone head-to-head with her for three months, was still as irritating as ever.
“I didn’t,” Yan Qinglan replied calmly, feeling it was necessary to explain herself.
Especially since Lu Tong was now also looking at her with suspicion.
“First of all, Miss Yu,” Yan Qinglan said, reaching into her bag and pulling out a red booklet, “Xioaxi and I are legally married.”
She opened their marriage certificate and showed it to Wen Huaxi’s friends.
“Second, I never forced her into anything. This child is one we decided to keep together.”
She held up the photo on the certificate before carefully placing the document back into her bag.
“You make it sound noble, but let’s be honest. You didn’t take any precautions, did you? Do you even realize how young Huaxi is? Don’t you think having a child now will affect her career?” Yu Xiyun scoffed.
They had been romantic rivals, so naturally her tone was sharp and unforgiving.
Yan Qinglan’s expression twitched slightly.
She then lowered her head and gently held Wen Huaxi, changing her tone to one of mock-pity.
“Xioaxi, what should I do? Someone doesn’t believe me.”
Wen Huaxi finally snapped out of her daze. “Xiyun, it’s okay. I really did want to keep this child.”
Even in her past life, it had been Wen Huaxi who made the decision. She had taken matters into her own hands. So what she said wasn’t untrue.
With Wen Huaxi speaking for herself, Yu Xiyun finally quieted down. But the disdain in her eyes when she looked at Yan Qinglan didn’t fade.
Yan Qinglan gave her a sidelong glance. “As for Xioaxi’s career and her health, that’s not something Miss Yu needs to worry about.”
With nothing left to say, Yu Xiyun could only watch the two of them walk into the infant section of the store.
Wen Huaxi even dragged Lu Tong along with her.
Yu Xiyun stared quietly at their clasped hands.
She had never been able to figure out what made her lesser than that pretentious woman. But perhaps she would never get the chance to find out now.
Meanwhile, Lu Tong, who had been pulled along to help pick colors for baby clothes, finally came to her senses.
She glanced at Wen Huaxi’s stomach from the side and then from the front. At last, she noticed a subtle bump.
“How far along are you?” Lu Tong had overheard the earlier argument as well.
She forced herself to push aside the complicated feelings and didn’t make eye contact with Yan Qinglan.
Honestly, anyone who found out Wen Huaxi was pregnant would probably feel a bit resentful toward Yan Qinglan. Being married didn’t make the situation look any better.
Lu Tong had once thought Yan Qinglan was a decent person. Now it seemed like maybe all alphas were the same.
“Five months. Can you tell? The baby’s really well-behaved,” Wen Huaxi said with a hint of pride in her voice when she mentioned Wen Qingxun.
“Five months? And you were still filming with us? That’s incredible.” Lu Tong was genuinely impressed by Wen Huaxi’s energy and stamina.
Especially since Wen Huaxi had helped her deal with Mu Chengcheng. That had been a dangerous move. If she had known, she would’ve tried to stop her from getting involved.
“It was winter, I was dressed in layers, and I can’t sit still anyway. I figured I’d film for a month or so, then go home to rest. Want to be the baby’s godmother?”
In her past life, she and Lu Tong had even agreed to that. They had almost gone as far as arranging a child marriage, only stopping because Lu Tong didn’t have strong feelings about raising kids.
“Really? What’s her name?”
“Wen Qingxun,” Wen Huaxi answered. She reached into Yan Qinglan’s bag, pulled out her phone, unlocked it, and opened the photo gallery to show Lu Tong a few pictures.
As the two women chatted about Wen Qingxun’s future, Yan Qinglan relaxed a little.
She understood why Yu Xiyun had been upset. From an outsider’s point of view, it really did look like she had been careless and put Wen Huaxi through something unfair.
But constantly being hated by Wen Huaxi’s friends still hurt.
Especially since she, Yu Xiyun, and Lu Tong had all known Wen Huaxi around the same time. In fact, Yu Xiyun had spent more time with her due to their roles in the same drama.
And yet, it was clear Wen Huaxi was closer to Lu Tong.
Close enough to ask her to be the godmother of their child.
Yan Qinglan was still trying to figure out why Wen Huaxi seemed to trust Lu Tong so much when Lu Tong was suddenly called away by a phone call.
“Sister Qing?” Wen Huaxi tugged gently at Yan Qinglan’s arm. “Were you upset earlier?”
“I’m alright. I can understand why they reacted the way they did,” Yan Qinglan said, lowering her voice slightly. “But I did feel a little wronged.”
Wen Huaxi reached up and gently rubbed Yan Qinglan’s cheek.
“It’s okay. They’re just friends. They don’t know the full story. I’m living my life with you, remember?”
After being comforted by her wife, Yan Qinglan felt much better. She adjusted her mindset and began seriously looking at clothes for their little one.
“These don’t feel like great quality. I think I’ll have someone custom-make clothes for our baby,” she said, touching the fabric with clear distaste.
“Starting luxury fashion from birth? Our baby is going to be one pampered little princess,” Wen Huaxi teased with a playful click of her tongue. “But Sister Qing, I’m out of money.”
“You already spent the paycheck from that project with Qin Shuyue?” Yan Qinglan was a little surprised.
“Pretty much. I had set aside some of it, but I used most of that to pay paparazzi to boost trending searches. The rest I donated,” Wen Huaxi replied lightly.
On the first day she got her paycheck, she had divided the money, kept a portion for herself, and donated the rest through a trusted organization.
Yan Qinglan paused for a moment. “Then I’ll open another card for you. Raising a child is going to cost a lot.”
She didn’t even need to ask to know that Wen Huaxi wanted to help kids who had been abandoned, just like she once was.
“Alright. I’ll make sure to keep a bit more for myself next time,” Wen Huaxi agreed without hesitation.
It was shared finances after all, and she had no guilt spending it, especially when it was for their baby.
In the end, they didn’t buy anything for their child that day. Instead, they had dinner at a restaurant Yan Qinglan trusted, then headed home.
After listening to Yan Qinglan explain the projects that had been troubling her recently, Wen Huaxi flipped through the documents.
If she remembered correctly, Yan Qinglan would eventually choose to build the new project in Haibin City.
Originally, that seemed like the best choice. But when construction began, a group of protected animals was discovered on-site. Digging deeper revealed ancient ruins. The combination of these issues completely stalled the project. In the end, it was abandoned, resulting in a huge financial loss and several owed favors.
After thinking it over, Wen Huaxi chose an alternative site listed in the proposal and started explaining her reasoning right away.
“I think Tingzhou is a better option. The city’s developing quickly, there’s demand, and the population is sizable.”
“What about Haibin?” Yan Qinglan asked, just as Wen Huaxi expected.
She had thought Wen Huaxi would choose the same as her. If the project succeeded, it would even double as a vacation spot for them.
“It’s too hot,” Wen Huaxi replied, giving the simplest reason she could think of.
“Alright. Since Xioaxi is my lucky charm, I’ll listen to you.” This would be the first time the Yan family was expanding their business to another region. It should have been a very cautious decision.
But Yan Qinglan believed her wife had good luck. Following her instinct couldn’t be wrong.
“You trust me that much? Don’t worry, Sister Qing. If the project doesn’t do well, I’ll promote it when I get famous. I’ll film a movie there and boost visibility.”
She wasn’t just saying that. She really had a script she liked that was set in Tingzhou.
“Then I trust you even more. Xioaxi would never steer me wrong, right?” Yan Qinglan kissed her gently, setting work aside for now.
Wen Huaxi caught on quickly and held her close. “Wait, I haven’t showered.”
“It’s fine. I washed my hands.” Yan Qinglan no longer cared about her usual cleanliness when it came to the woman she loved.
By late December, Wen Huaxi’s birthday arrived.
Her friends had their gifts delivered to their home. A few had forgotten she changed addresses and sent them to Wen Suxue’s place instead.
Wen Suxue carried a cake and some presents and visited their home for the first time.
Since Wen Qingxun was almost six months along, Wen Huaxi didn’t invite anyone else. Only Wen Suxue and Yan Mingzhu came.
As soon as she saw Wen Suxue, Yan Qinglan called out “sister” again, successfully cutting off her usual sarcasm.
“Sister, we’ve got too many cakes. I already ordered one for Xioaxi,” Yan Qinglan said sweetly, calling her “sister” over and over again.
The muscles on Wen Suxue’s face twitched.
What kind of karma had she accumulated to get a sister-in-law like this? Someone older than her, shamelessly calling her “sister” every chance she got.
“This cake is from a brand Xioaxi has loved since she was a kid,” Wen Suxue said, placing it firmly on the dining table.
Wen Huaxi leaned in, ready to sneak a bite, but Yan Qinglan pulled her back.
“This year is special. Xioaxi should eat the one I prepared.”
Yan Qinglan sounded very logical as she pointed out that other shops might not use fresh ingredients or have clean kitchens.
Wen Suxue was so annoyed that not even being called “sister” again could calm her. She insisted on arguing with Yan Qinglan.
Just then, Yan Mingzhu opened the door and walked in on the scene.
“Lanlan, is this Xioaxi’s sister? Why are you arguing with her?” she said, trying to deescalate the situation.
She then turned to Wen Huaxi, who seemed completely unfazed.
Wen Huaxi was caught in the middle, her eyes locked on the cake, clearly trying to sneak a bite.
When she saw Yan Mingzhu, she waved her over.
Yan Mingzhu looked at her daughter, then at her daughter-in-law, and decided not to interfere with whatever unnecessary competitiveness her daughter had gotten herself into. She went to join Wen Huaxi in sneaking a taste of the cake.
“Mom,” Yan Qinglan finally noticed the two of them digging in.
“What? You’re really going to scold your own mom too?” Wen Huaxi hadn’t been called out, but she puffed up defensively, pointing at Yan Qinglan.
“It’s not clean,” Yan Qinglan said as she gently pulled the cake-loving troublemaker closer and wiped the cream off her lips.
“I’ve eaten that cake for over ten years. There’s nothing wrong with it. Please, Sister Qing, just let me have one bite. It doesn’t feel like a birthday without it,” Wen Huaxi pouted, looking adorably wronged.
“Fine. Just a little bit.” Under triple pressure, Yan Qinglan gave in.
Wen Huaxi beamed with joy and went to cling to Wen Suxue.
“Such a lively girl,” Yan Mingzhu said, watching Wen Huaxi with eyes full of affection.
“Yes. Xioaxi has always had a lovely personality,” Yan Qinglan replied. Lately, she’d become even more playful and childish, and Yan Qinglan was happy to indulge her.
Wen Huaxi knew how to act sweet. With just a few words, she could make it impossible for Yan Qinglan to say no.
Even when it came to more private matters.
At the very least, Yan Qinglan had stuck to her rule of keeping things on the surface and never taking it further. She figured she deserved praise for that.
“I hope my granddaughter takes after her,” Yan Mingzhu said with no hesitation at all.
“She probably will,” Yan Qinglan replied, unbothered.
She had seen their little darling in her dream. Her personality was very much like Wen Huaxi’s.
“When’s the due date? Have you done all the checkups? What about a postpartum nanny?” After admiring her future grandchild, Yan Mingzhu switched into full mom mode.
“Due date is April fifth. We’ve done Down syndrome and fetal abnormality screenings, and the nanny has been arranged through the housekeeper,” Yan Qinglan answered everything patiently.
Since the baby was already past five months, she had started to feel nervous.
After cutting the cake, Wen Huaxi didn’t eat much. She went to the side to open presents with Yan Qinglan.
Lu Tong and Yu Xiyun had both sent baby items and health supplements for Wen Huaxi.
Yan Mingzhu and Wen Suxue had gone all out. One gave a car, the other a brand-new top-of-the-line smartphone.
Yan Qinglan glanced at her mother’s extravagant gift and suddenly felt like her own present was a bit lacking.
The actual value of the gifts wasn’t necessarily much different. But since she ended up choosing clothes and jewelry, Yan Qinglan still felt like her present lacked uniqueness. In the end, she could only settle for something a little flashy.
“Xioaxi, do you think my gift is too plain?” Yan Qinglan asked, showing her the custom dress and matching jewelry set.
Wen Huaxi slowly looked up at her, eyeing the outfit and accessories that cost as much as a house in the third ring of the city. “Sister Qing, I think your definition of ‘plain’ might be a little off.”
“It’s just that my mom gave a car, which is really practical. I was afraid you might find mine underwhelming. This is my first time being in a relationship, so I wasn’t sure what to give. Don’t be mad at me,” Yan Qinglan said sincerely, not at all concerned about the money.
Wen Huaxi wrapped her arms around her. “How could I ever dislike anything from you? I really love the dress. After our baby is born, I’ll wear it to walk the red carpet. This is also my first relationship. I didn’t even celebrate your birthday this year. I’ll make it up to you next year.”
Yan Qinglan’s birthday had been in July. Back then, their relationship had still been lukewarm. One of them had been thinking about divorce, the other about playing the field. Neither had taken the birthday seriously.
“You don’t need to make it a big deal. Just the fact that you want to give me something makes me happy.” Yan Qinglan leaned her head against Wen Huaxi’s shoulder, naturally growing more affectionate.
“That’s right. The thought behind the gift matters most. So of course I won’t think yours is lacking. Besides, I really do love it.”
Wen Huaxi patted Yan Qinglan’s head. Her Sister Qing was like a child sometimes.
As the birthday gathering went on, Wen Huaxi started feeling sleepy. Yan Qinglan took her to the bedroom to rest, then saw their relatives out.
“Why am I still so sleepy? I just napped earlier,” Wen Huaxi mumbled as she lay down, her eyelids already drooping.
Yan Qinglan gently stroked her hair, her heart aching a little. “You didn’t sleep for very long. Rest for a while. We’ll go for a walk later this evening.”
“Alright. Half an hour is enough. If I sleep too long, I’ll just feel more tired.” Wen Huaxi closed her eyes.
Yan Qinglan watched her wife’s peaceful sleeping face for a while, then gently placed her hand over her baby bump.
They had just passed the halfway mark. Four more months to go.
Just thinking about how much longer Wen Huaxi had to carry their child made Yan Qinglan feel anxious.
She had researched and found that Wen Qingxun was considered a very well-behaved baby. There hadn’t been much discomfort, and the pregnancy had been mostly smooth so far.
Even so, fatigue, swelling, and body aches couldn’t be avoided. Wen Huaxi never complained, often hiding her discomfort. But Yan Qinglan still noticed and did everything she could to ease her pain.
Now that the baby had grown, the coming months would only get harder. Wen Huaxi would soon be carrying a large belly, and even walking would become difficult.
The only good thing was that Wen Huaxi hadn’t fallen into any depression or anxiety over the pregnancy. She remained in good spirits.
Yan Qinglan could only bury her frustration deep inside, letting it show only after Wen Huaxi had fallen asleep.
That evening, they went out for a walk hand in hand and were stopped by a flower vendor on the street.
Yan Qinglan noticed Wen Huaxi kept staring at the roses, so she bought a bouquet for her.
“I was only looking because there was a little ladybug on it,” Wen Huaxi said, stuffing the flowers into Yan Qinglan’s hands.
“We already have two bouquets at home. Why buy more?”
Yan Qinglan’s hand twitched at the mention of a bug. “They’re almost wilted. I thought you liked these.”
“Alright, alright. I do like them.” Wen Huaxi took her hand and looked more closely at the bouquet.
“The bug’s gone now. Not sure where it went.”
“It probably flew away,” Yan Qinglan replied, silently praying it wouldn’t come back.
“So Sister Qing is afraid of bugs?” Wen Huaxi let out a short laugh and held her arm more tightly.
“They’re dirty,” Yan Qinglan muttered. It wasn’t fear, just disgust.
“We’ll get them cleaned when we get home.” Wen Huaxi looked up at the sky.
The stars were sparse, dimmed by the bright moonlight. But even that added a certain charm. It was calming.
“Tonight is beautiful. I want to walk a bit longer.”
She didn’t miss the way Yan Qinglan’s brow tensed slightly.
After they returned home, took showers, and got ready for bed, the two of them lay side by side. Wen Huaxi wrapped her arms around Yan Qinglan.
“Sister Qing, are you feeling a little down?”
