This Alpha Is So Devoted to His Wife - Chapter 55
Duan Yu Luo drove his car into the garage and noticed Lu Xinghe’s car was already there. He calmly averted his gaze, parked his car, turned off the ignition, opened the door, and got out.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Lu Xinghe, wearing a black shirt and an apron, was bending over, leisurely plating and garnishing their dinner.
When he saw Duan Yu Luo enter through the back door of the garage, his eyes lit up, and he stood up: “You’re back?”
“Mmm.” Duan Yu Luo placed his car keys on the shoe cabinet and bent down to change his shoes.
“What’s wrong? Are you in a bad mood?”
Duan Yu Luo was about to take off his socks when he felt a shadow fall over him. Before he could react, Lu Xinghe was already kneeling in front of him, grasping his ankle, and helping him remove his socks—the very hand that had just been plating dinner.
He could only hold onto the shoe cabinet and obediently raise his foot.
“I’m guessing it’s not about the proposal. Did Serena anger you again?” Lu Xinghe finished taking off the socks and put on his slippers, then stood up, wanting to hug him.
Duan Yu Luo dodged him: “Go wash your hands.” He walked to the kitchen to wash his own hands.
Lu Xinghe’s open arms embraced empty air. His expression was crestfallen, and he followed him: “I helped you take off your shoes. How can you be so disdainful of me?”
Hearing his tone, Duan Yu Luo tried to hold back his smile and stay angry but couldn’t help but laugh out loud: “Are you sure this is how you usually act when socializing?” He walked up to the sink and squeezed out the foaming hand soap to wash his hands.
Before he could rub for two seconds, a pair of hands wrapped around him from behind, slipped into the gaps between his fingers, and intertwined with his, snatching the hand soap.
His back was enveloped by a broad chest, completely hugging him. Lu Xinghe’s complaining voice reached his ear: “I promised you I’d come home early today. You won’t even give me a hug? Are you deliberately taking your anger out on me, Duan Yu Luo?”
Duan Yu Luo burst into laughter: “Me, taking out my anger?” He turned his head and directly smeared the foam onto Lu Xinghe’s face: “Yes, I am taking my anger out on you.”
Lu Xinghe: “Pfft—” He was caught off guard and smeared with foam, though his eyes were mercifully spared. His eyes showed confusion: “Why? What did I do wrong?”
Duan Yu Luo pushed his arms away and went to the other side of the sink to wash his hands: “I just found out that Serena is a front-runner for the Crown Princess.”
“Which Serena?”
Duan Yu Luo felt Lu Xinghe hug him from behind again. He was too lazy to push him away this time and said flatly, “Do you know that many Serenas? Which Serena could it be? The Serena your Grandmother loves the most.”
Lu Xinghe turned his head to observe Duan Yu Luo’s expression and realized he was genuinely upset. While rubbing their hands together, he pondered, then understood with a flash of insight: “Are you saying the Serena you dislike is the same Serena my Grandmother recommended to me?”
As soon as he finished, Duan Yu Luo splashed water into his face, forcing him to close his eyes and then get pushed away again.
This time, however, Lu Xinghe didn’t let him go. He grabbed Duan Yu Luo’s waist, lifted him, placed him on the sink, and stepped between his legs, preventing him from leaving.
Duan Yu Luo was unexpectedly set down on the sink. Sitting this way, his gaze met Lu Xinghe’s at eye level. His face was devoid of expression, yet it revealed his mood: “Lu Xinghe, you didn’t tell me this. Hearing it from you directly is a completely different concept than hearing it from someone else.”
Lu Xinghe raised both hands, his expression serious: “I swear, I truly didn’t know the Serena you mentioned was the same person my Grandmother spoke of.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me about the Serena your Grandmother introduced to you?”
“I told you, but you didn’t pay attention to me.”
Duan Yu Luo was stunned for two seconds: “You told me?”
“Yes.” Lu Xinghe braced his arms on either side of him, leaned in, and kissed him quickly, then softened his tone: “I did tell you. Maybe you were busy at the time and didn’t listen carefully. Don’t worry, whether it’s Serena or some other Jennina, they won’t have a chance to get close to me. You also don’t need to care about the so-called Crown Princess front-runner. It’s all a performance she put on herself. It has nothing to do with me.”
Duan Yu Luo didn’t recall Lu Xinghe ever mentioning this. However, Lu Xinghe wouldn’t lie to him, and there was no need to deceive him over this. He was silent for a moment, then lowered his head: “Alright, then I didn’t pay attention.”
“So, you were angry at me because you were jealous, right?”
“Of course. I would definitely be angry. Although I trust you very much, I don’t trust your Grandmother. Capitalists don’t care about feelings. Cooperation is cooperation. They won’t have a favorable impression of me just because they cooperate with the Galaxy Group.”
As soon as he finished speaking, he noticed Lu Xinghe staring at him. He frowned: “What are you looking at?”
The moment he spoke, Lu Xinghe cupped his face and kissed him.
The kiss was dominant and passionate, giving him no opportunity to retreat, until it stole all his saliva and breath. He couldn’t breathe and pushed him away with his arms, his eyebrows flushed with annoyance: “Lu Xinghe! We’re talking about something important!”
“Zai Zai (Baby), you love me so much.” Lu Xinghe wasn’t angry. Seeing his irritated and blushing look, he felt a heart-fluttering affection for him. He cupped his face and kissed him a few more times: “I’m so happy you care about me this much.”
Duan Yu Luo: “…” He was kissed all over his face and turned his head away helplessly: “Lu Xinghe, I’m mad at you. Can you please just listen to me for a moment?”
“I’m happy that you’re mad at me.” Lu Xinghe stopped. Seeing his look of annoyance and helplessness, he simply picked him up, holding him face-to-face, and carried him out of the kitchen: “This afternoon, my Grandmother suggested inviting Serena back to Lorman Castle for dinner. I told her that was fine, but that I was going home to be with you.”
“You dared to say that to your Grandmother?”
“I was smiling. I wasn’t frowning. I didn’t argue with her or defy her.” Lu Xinghe walked into the living room, sat down on the sofa, leaned back against the cushion, and pulled Duan Yu Luo onto his lap, holding him in his arms: “I’m sorry for still making you angry.”
He stroked Duan Yu Luo’s back gently, worried that his anger would hurt him.
After all, he still occasionally experienced chest pain after the open-heart surgery.
Duan Yu Luo naturally nestled into his arms, lazily relaxing his entire body, resting his head on Lu Xinghe’s shoulder, and muttered: “Even though I know you love me, every time I hear these things, I still feel unhappy. I hate it here. I want to go back.”
If it hadn’t been for Lu Xinghe, he wouldn’t have come here just to study.
But he had been too naive. At first, he simply thought they could have a free relationship here, away from his family’s watchful eyes. Yet, in the end, this place became his biggest restraint.
“I know.” Lu Xinghe kissed his cheek and gently coaxed him: “It will be soon. I’ll aim to resolve everything this year, and then we’ll go back together. We’ll get married as soon as we return, okay?”
“How do you plan to resolve it? If your Grandmother truly forces you to marry a woman, what will you do?” Duan Yu Luo sat up and asked seriously.
“I’ll just leave the Royal Family,” Lu Xinghe said.
Duan Yu Luo saw how easily he said it: “You might want to, but will your Grandmother agree?”
“If she doesn’t agree, I have ways to make her agree. You don’t have to worry. I won’t let these issues, which are irrelevant to our future life, affect us. We just need to live our normal life and shouldn’t be bound by these stubborn old systems.” Lu Xinghe used his parents as an example.
“My parents took me to Huaxia when I was very young because they couldn’t stand the restrictions of the Royal Family. Although my Grandmother didn’t do anything to my parents, when I was still at Lorman, I often heard the maids gossiping about my mother because she had partial Huaxia heritage. These are some of their deep-rooted beliefs that can’t be changed. So, my parents brought me to Huaxia to give me a freer environment.”
“I’m also very grateful that I grew up in Huaxia. It taught me about equality and freedom. Although the wealth gap causes some disparity in equality and freedom, the overall environment is different.”
“I don’t need someone to kneel and take off my shoes when I come home, nor do I need someone to dress me. I just need to see my lover when I come home. That’s enough.”
“For this freedom, and for you to have confidence in me and our future, just give me a little more time.”
In the living room, the two leaned their foreheads together, speaking in low whispers, like murmuring sweet nothings.
Duan Yu Luo hugged Lu Xinghe’s head. He had to admit that the person he loved was special. Different from the systems in his own country, and with a different identity, the older they got, the more factors they had to consider. Even reaching the point of marriage required struggling against restrictions.
His eyes involuntarily grew warm: “…Will it be hard to deal with your Grandmother?”
Lu Xinghe heard the subtle choking sound in his ear. He frowned, held Duan Yu Luo’s shoulders, and saw him looking at him with eyes full of distress: “Don’t cry. You don’t need to feel sorry for me. This is my battle to fight. You just need to cheer me on. Crying won’t help.”
Hearing this, Duan Yu Luo immediately lowered his head and rested his forehead on Lu Xinghe’s shoulder. His tears finally fell: “I’m so rich, yet it’s so difficult to even get married.” He then looked up at Lu Xinghe, his voice slightly annoyed:
“I told you to mark me! Then I’ll have a baby and just see what she can do. What can she do to me once the rice is already cooked?”
Lu Xinghe laughed, wiping his tears with the back of his hand: “How could I let you get pregnant at a time like this? What if I—”
His words stopped abruptly. He didn’t dare say the rest of the sentence.
Duan Yu Luo’s eyes were red, and he saw Lu Xinghe stop talking: “Why did you stop? Is there something you can’t say?”
Lu Xinghe looked up, took a deep breath, struggled internally for a moment, then grabbed Duan Yu Luo’s arms and said seriously, though with reluctance: “Because I have to prepare for the worst. If I really cannot break free from the Royal Family, I might have to stay here. Not only stay, but I might have to serve in the military for at least three years. So, if you were pregnant now, what would you do? What would I do?”
Duan Yu Luo’s expression froze.
He was virtually expressionless, his face cold, and the tears just silently fell.
He desperately gripped Lu Xinghe’s hands, as if unable to accept it. He lowered his head, his thin lips trembling, and squeezed out a difficult sound from between his teeth: “…No.”
He angrily punched Lu Xinghe’s thigh.
“I know.” Lu Xinghe saw that he had made him cry again and felt annoyed. He hadn’t wanted to say anything, but he also didn’t want Duan Yu Luo to guess wildly or be sad. He cupped his face, meeting his tear-stained eyes: “So, just give me a little more time. Wait for me a little longer, okay?”
“Then you…” Duan Yu Luo seemed to have thought of something even more painful and became even sadder. He wasn’t usually one to cry, but the thought alone was enough to trigger his tears: “Then…”
Lu Xinghe laughed, hearing him say “then” repeatedly without getting to the point: “Then what?”
“Then it’s really true that our child can’t be without its Da Ba (Dad).” Duan Yu Luo rubbed his stomach, looking at Lu Xinghe gloomily: “So, this is why you’ve always refused to mark me?”
“Yes. I can’t be irresponsible toward you. I promised you that we would always be together and never separate.” Lu Xinghe saw that he seemed to be in a slightly better mood. He set him down on the sofa next to him, pulled out two tissues to wipe his face, and joked: “I’d crawl to your side even if I lost everything. You’d take care of me then.”
“I can take care of you right now.”
“I know. Just let me struggle a little first. After all, I am an Alpha.”
“Fine.”
“Now, are you hungry? I made your favorite dishes.”
“Your cooking isn’t good, though your posture is very handsome.”
Lu Xinghe: “…” Don’t be so harsh on me. I tried very hard.
Later that evening, he managed to coax and soothe him after much effort.
He thought to himself that he must find a way to break free quickly.
…
The next day.
The two were putting on their shoes in the entrance hall.
“I’ll be back early tonight. If you don’t have anything to do, you come back early too, okay?” Lu Xinghe was kneeling in front of Duan Yu Luo, tying the laces on his sneakers, and looked up at him as he spoke.
Duan Yu Luo nodded: “Of course. Today, I’ll just run to the lab and then check the market situation at the pharmacy. I shouldn’t be back too late.”
“It’s hot outside. Remember to drink water and don’t always drink cold things,” Lu Xinghe said, rubbing his head before standing up.
“I know.”
Duan Yu Luo stood up and pressed the garage door button.
Five minutes later, the two cars drove out of the garage, one after the other.
…
The summer in Country D wasn’t excessively hot, but walking around to over twenty pharmacies for a long time still caused some physical discomfort.
Duan Yu Luo sat outside a pharmacy, resting. He leaned on his thighs, his head bowed. Sweat was dripping down his neck and had already soaked the white t-shirt around his collar. He raised a hand to wipe his face and didn’t speak for a while.
“Jacob, I don’t think you should be so down. After all, this test kit was just introduced. You yourself said that the Galaxy Research Institute is still considered a foreign brand here. Consumers will definitely choose the Royal Pharmacy’s product first. It’s not that the medicine under the Galaxy Group is unsafe.”
Jack handed Duan Yu Luo the drink he had just bought from the pharmacy. Seeing an Omega working so hard outside, he couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for him.
Duan Yu Luo took the drink, finding the cold touch soothing. He didn’t look at what kind of drink it was, twisted the cap off, and tilted his head back to gulp it down. After finishing, he set the bottle down, braced his arms on his legs, and stared at the flower bed not far away: “I know. I’m not down.”
He never expected this test kit to take off the moment it entered the Country D market; he knew that wouldn’t happen quickly. It was just that the results were weaker than he had expected. After running around to so many pharmacies all day, the sales volume of the test kits couldn’t even compare to the more expensive testing instruments.
Setting quality aside, it ultimately came down to brand effect.
Jack raised his hand and patted Duan Yu Luo’s shoulder, comforting him: “It’s fine. It’s only a matter of time. It doesn’t reflect on your ability. Cheer up, don’t let Serena laugh at you.” Inadvertently, he noticed a large area on Duan Yu Luo’s neck was suddenly flushed: “Wait, your neck—”
Duan Yu Luo hadn’t felt uncomfortable at first, but slowly, he frowned. His face gradually turned pale. He felt a lightheadedness caused by difficulty breathing and an indescribable itch all over his body. His heart pounded urgently against his eardrums, a frantic rhythm that pulled at his breath. Cold sweat trickled down his forehead and cheeks.
As if realizing something, he looked down at the drink in his hand.
Compound protein drink.
…Oh no.
It had protein. He couldn’t drink it.
His hand lost strength, and the unfinished drink bottle fell to the ground, spilling everywhere and splashing onto his trousers.
“Jacob!!!”
His breathing became rapid, and his face was abnormally red. A pain in his forehead surged through his skull. His hand trembled as he clutched the clothing over his chest, opening his mouth and trying desperately to gasp for air.
“…Call someone for me.” His hand was shaking as he offered his phone to Jack.
“Call who, call who! I’m calling an ambulance right now, quickly!” Jack swiftly dialed the ambulance number on his own phone first.
“Press 1—” Duan Yu Luo tried to speak. Before he could fully reply to Jack, he suddenly couldn’t catch his breath. A suffocating tightness gripped his chest, and his eyelids closed.
He completely lost his strength and collapsed forward.
