This Alpha Is So Devoted to His Wife - Chapter 51
This was the first time Duan Yuluo had seen Lu Xinghe cry like this.
Such a tall man, he just sat by the bed and watched him, shedding tears constantly. His eyes were full of sadness, mixed with the heartache and self-reproach that Duan Yuluo could clearly understand. It was very difficult for him to watch, and his chest ached terribly.
“Xingxing.” He reached out, his palm curving his fingers with little strength.
Lu Xinghe lowered his head and took a deep breath, adjusting his emotions. When he held Duan Yuluo’s cool, trembling hand, he froze. He raised his eyes, meeting Duan Yuluo’s slightly red-rimmed eyes. He looked as if he was in great discomfort.
“…It hurts so much.” Duan Yuluo used his other hand to point to his chest, his brows tightly furrowed.
Lu Xinghe suddenly stood up, immediately pressed the call button by the bed, and then apologized, lowering his head and cupping Duan Yuluo’s face, soothing him gently, “I’m sorry, I, I forgot to call the doctor. How do you feel now? Is it hurting a lot?”
“Don’t cry first.” Duan Yuluo felt his voice was very small and labored. He turned his head and leaned close to Lu Xinghe’s ear: “…Your crying makes my heart hurt so much. Please don’t cry, okay?”
Lu Xinghe pressed his lips together, restraining his emotions. For the moment, he didn’t dare to look directly into Duan Yuluo’s eyes, afraid he wouldn’t be able to hold back again. He gave a low “Mn.”
Then he turned his back and wiped his face.
Just then, a team of doctors and nurses pushed the door open and entered.
Duan Yuluo watched as the doctors surrounded him, asking about his condition, whether his wound hurt, and if he had any other discomforts. He tried his best to answer them one by one, while his gaze remained fixed on Lu Xinghe, who was standing by the window with his back to him.
He watched the guy wipe his face, put his hands on his hips, and then look up, taking deep breaths—a state of complete restless anxiety. He didn’t dare to look at him, so Duan Yuluo guessed he must be crying again.
This accident happened too suddenly. He hadn’t even fully reacted himself, let alone Lu Xinghe. The only thing he could clearly feel was that his chest really hurt. It was difficult to move, let alone go over and hug Lu Xinghe.
Now, he couldn’t even call him over to his side very loudly. He could only wait for the doctors to finish their examination.
Perhaps sensing his thought, he saw Lu Xinghe turn his head, likely intending only to steal a glance at him. Unexpectedly, he was looking right back, so he quickly covered his face, lowered his head, and turned away again.
He was probably crying once more.
He truly couldn’t help himself and laughed out loud, which immediately pulled at the wound on his chest, making him cry from the pain.
Lu Xinghe heard the noise and instantly spun around. He didn’t think much, elbowing the doctors aside in a rush. He was so flustered that he didn’t know where to put his hands. Seeing Duan Yuluo’s face looked unwell and that he was shedding tears, he asked, “What is it, baby? Where does it hurt?”
Then he saw Duan Yuluo staring at his face.
He instinctively reached up to wipe his own cheeks.
Before he could speak, he saw Duan Yuluo lift the hand that still had monitoring equipment attached and gently beckon to him.
By this time, the doctors had finished their examination. Lu Xinghe listened to their instructions, confirmed that they would return for another check, and nodded seriously. Only after the doctors left the room and the ward was quiet again did he sit by the bed, take the hand Duan Yuluo offered, and look at him.
The more he looked, the sadder he became.
Though it was summer, this hand was very cold, even trembling.
The wide hospital gown was open at the collar, and gauze covered the chest wound on his pale skin. The oxygen mask was still over his face, the white mist of his breath intermittently clouding the transparent shield. Just having woken up from surgery, he was still exhausted, and his cheeks were sickly pale.
Just two days ago, he could still jump into his arms, and they could cuddle together on the sofa and whisper secrets. Now, he could only lie in this hospital bed, like a ripped-up doll, filled with a sense of being shattered and clumsily pieced back together.
Lu Xinghe looked away and took several more deep breaths, tilting his head back. He still couldn’t control his emotions, so he lowered his head and rested his forehead on the cool hand, letting out muffled, suppressed sobs through his lips.
He simply couldn’t bear to look at Duan Yuluo right now.
One look and he would lose control.
He truly couldn’t hold it together.
“Xingxing.” Duan Yuluo turned his face. His voice sounded muffled through the oxygen mask, and he smiled faintly. He gazed at Lu Xinghe: “Don’t be like this. If you cry again, I’m going to fall asleep. I’m so sleepy.”
The back of his hand was wet with Lu Xinghe’s tears.
He had always known what kind of person Lu Xinghe was. In fact, this guy wasn’t one to cry; he wouldn’t cry unless he was truly heartbroken.
Lu Xinghe’s eyes were red. He adjusted his emotions again, looking at Duan Yuluo’s smiling appearance. He forcefully pinched his own leg, reminding himself that he had to speak properly now. Then, he held Duan Yuluo’s hand and pressed it against his cheek.
They looked at each other for about ten seconds, which felt like a very long time, without saying a single word.
After a while.
“Xingxing, I had a dream.”
“What kind of dream?”
“It was very dark, and a little scary. That person was scolding me, just scolding me the whole time.”
“I’ve already dealt with her.”
“Did you beat her up?”
“I definitely couldn’t do that. If I could, I would want to retaliate with violence, stab her back, and let her family taste the collapse one feels outside an operating room.”
“You mustn’t collapse.”
“I almost did.”
Duan Yuluo felt Lu Xinghe’s head gently resting on his shoulder. At that moment, a sense of security slowly enveloped him, making his nightmares vanish. He slightly turned his head to touch the other man’s head: “This situation was very dangerous, wasn’t it?”
“Very dangerous.”
“Will you stop me?”
“I want to, but I won’t.”
“Really?”
“Yes, because I want you to be happy. I know you love it, so I won’t stop you. But I must stand by your side. The next time you have a chance to get on stage, I’ll shamelessly tag along with you.”
Duan Yuluo smiled. Due to exhaustion, he slowly closed his eyes, maintaining the whispering tone Lu Xinghe had used: “Don’t be so ridiculous.”
“This isn’t funny. I cried very miserably.”
“I know. I’m sorry, baby. Next time, I’ll stab back.”
“There won’t be a next time!”
“Okay…”
After a while, Lu Xinghe heard steady breathing and realized Duan Yuluo had closed his eyes and fallen asleep. He must have been so exhausted and weak to fall asleep again less than half an hour after waking up.
He slowly sat up, his hand gently stroking the other man’s forehead.
His red-rimmed eyes gradually darkened, and a completely different kind of fierceness radiated from him.
Soothing him was one thing, but this kind of thing would absolutely never happen again.
His gaze fell on the sleeping Duan Yuluo’s face. His eyes no longer concealed his deep affection, which was now mixed with intense heartache. How much time would it take now to fully heal this person’s body, to piece him back together?
Could he ever return to his original lively, bouncing self?
Knock, knock, knock—
At that moment, a light knock came from outside the ward door, followed by a familiar, deep voice.
“It’s me.”
Lu Xinghe stood up and walked to open the door, seeing Luo Yudan standing outside. He was slightly surprised: “How are you out? Did you escape?”
Luo Yudan’s temple twitched. Why did these two think he was so useless? Did they think he had to escape? “How is Zai Zai? The doctor said he woke up,” he said, walking in to take a look at his younger brother.
Lu Xinghe immediately grasped his shoulder and lowered his voice: “Be quieter. Don’t wake him up. He’s very weak right now.”
“I know.”
Luo Yudan walked to the bedside, looking at his younger brother, who was wearing an oxygen mask and soundly asleep. He was silent for a moment, then lowered his head, wiped his face, turned to the side, and took a deep breath, steadying his emotions. Finally, he couldn’t help but curse in a low voice:
“F—k.”
Lu Xinghe: “…” This was the first time he had seen his brother-in-law be so crude, but he could understand; he wanted to stab someone too.
“Code Name J?” Luo Yudan thought of something and looked at Lu Xinghe, his eyes questioning.
Lu Xinghe raised an eyebrow: “How did you guess?”
“My great-uncle hasn’t personally gotten involved in things like this for a long time; he’s only interested in celebrity chasing. Other than you, I can’t think of anyone else.” Luo Yudan raised a hand and patted Lu Xinghe’s shoulder, lowering his voice: “Come outside to talk.”
The two tall Alphas walked out of the ward one after the other, gently closing the door behind them.
In the hallway, they sat down.
“I only have ten minutes. Let’s make it quick,” Luo Yudan said, clasping his hands on his lap, his expression serious. “This protest action is absolutely not just aimed at the secondary differentiation gene testing plan. I can’t reveal the specifics, but what I need to tell you is that your attitude, and your grandmother’s attitude, will determine whether this plan can continue here.”
“You were actually a target in this protest, but your grandmother protected you very well. My Zai Zai was the one who suffered, as you know.”
“You know my attitude very well. I respect whatever Zai Zai chooses to do. As for my grandmother, I will try hard to talk to her. I won’t let him suffer in vain.”
Luo Yudan sneered, his eyes sharp and chilling. An unspoken pressure emanated from him. He glanced at Lu Xinghe beside him:
“The Galaxy Group came to the table with sincerity for this cooperation, but the way this incident happened and the way it’s been handled aren’t exactly satisfactory. You figure it out yourself. He’s important to both sides. Don’t make Zai Zai have to choose between you and the Galaxy Group. Also, Zai Zai doesn’t need to be your honored guest; he is the treasure of our entire family.”
“He is my treasure too. I will handle it well, Brother-in-law. You can rest assured.”
“What brother-in-law? I haven’t agreed to this. Don’t call me that,” Luo Yudan said. He saw the tall figure at the end of the corridor—the commanding officer was checking up on him—so he stood up: “I’m leaving now.”
Seeing Luo Yudan about to go, Lu Xinghe stood up and said, “I have already clearly stated to my grandmother that if she prevents me from being with Zai Zai, I will give up my title.”
Luo Yudan stopped walking. “?” He turned his head, looking at him with suspicion.
“Big Brother, I’m serious,” Lu Xinghe said. “I cannot live without Zai Zai.”
The white fluorescent lights of the corridor were bright, falling on the tall, sincere young man. His tone sounded neither warm nor agitated, yet it was suppressing and restraining all his emotions. The dark circles under his eyes and the red streaks of exhaustion in his eye sockets were clear for all to see.
Luo Yudan was silent for two seconds, then turned and walked away, leaving a single remark: “Suit yourself.”
In his heart, he muttered:
Why are there love-struck fools everywhere in this family?
“Done talking?”
Luo Yudan walked up and saw the Commanding Officer leaning against the railing, holding a recently lit cigarette. The officer glanced at him, chin slightly raised, and slowly exhaled a thick cloud of white smoke, which enveloped his gorgeously cold and proud features, completely at odds with his rank.
Who would have thought that this fighter pilot Commanding Officer was an Omega?
He stepped forward, took the cigarette from the Commanding Officer’s hand, and extinguished it in the nearby trash can: “Smoke less. Live a few more years.”
The Commanding Officer took another cigarette from his pocket, ready to light it. Before he could, his hand was caught. He slightly lifted his eyelids, meeting Luo Yudan’s deep gaze. He shook off the hand and said coldly, “Comrade Luo, please obey orders. Release your grip.”
Upon hearing the command, Luo Yudan could only let go, looking down at the man standing in front of him. What kind of look was that? Though shorter than him, the officer always made him feel like he was being looked at like trash.
The Commanding Officer lit the cigarette, took a puff, extended his hand, and grabbed Luo Yudan’s lapel, slowly exhaling the smoke.
Luo Yudan was pulled forward without warning. Fearing he might bump into the Omega in front of him, he instinctively gripped his shoulders protectively. Due to the close proximity, the smoke made him cough, and he turned his face away, his temple twitching: “Commanding Officer!”
Before he could say anything more, the Commanding Officer let go of his lapel.
The Commanding Officer extinguished the glowing tip of the cigarette on the trash can nearby. Without another word, he turned and left.
Luo Yudan: “…” Sometimes, he really couldn’t understand this person’s temper. He was even harder to deal with than his younger brother.
He quickly followed after him with long strides.
