This Alpha Is So Devoted to His Wife - Chapter 31
In the laboratory, four people wearing white coats and goggles were standing in front of an instrument, working with the operator to test the experiment of implanting Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the Hypermnesia Chip.
“Currently, AI technology still requires a large amount of high-quality data to train the algorithm. The process of acquiring and processing medical data from the Hypermnesia Chip is relatively complex, and the quality of each person’s data is unstable. Furthermore, there are legal and technical complexities involved, concerning human life and health, as well as data privacy and safety. This research will require a long time to verify its feasibility.”
“Especially the issue of patient privacy. Once it’s linked to AI, privacy can easily be leaked. Even if the technology is finally achieved, patients may not agree to it. Without recruiting volunteers, it will be difficult to implement this technology.”
“So, kids, your idea is great, but it’s very likely to fail.”
The operator pointed to the countless deep blue data lines on the screen: “These are the error data from previous experiments. However, we didn’t actually implant AI into a human body before; we simulated the reaction data of AI implanted into a human body on a computer. The rejection rate from the simulation is sixty percent higher than the rejection rate observed when our Hypermnesia Chip is implanted. This rejection possibility is too high, so we have temporarily suspended this research.”
Duan Yiluo placed one hand on the edge of the nearby table and bent down to get a closer look at the data on the screen. Before he could lower his head, a hand from behind grabbed the back of his collar. He twisted his head in astonishment, meeting Lu Xinghe’s deep gaze.
“What are you doing?” he asked, looking bewildered.
Lu Xinghe released his collar without changing expression, his Adam’s apple bobbing. He feigned calmness and said, “You don’t need to stand that close to see. You’re an Omega.”
The subtext was: the operator was an Alpha.
Duan Yifan and Jiang Nianqiao, standing by, wore complicated expressions. They were supposed to be focused on academics; what was this love-struck idiot doing now?
Duan Yiluo: “…” For a moment, he didn’t know what to say to Lu Xinghe.
The operator, who clearly understood what the young master behind him meant, quickly stood up: “You all take a look. All the data files from previous experiments on the desktop can be viewed without restriction. I’ll go work next door first. Find me if you need anything.”
After all, the bosses had instructed him to take good care of these young ones, and they’d been granted permission to access the data. But when the time came, one had to be tactful.
Seeing the operator tactfully leave, Lu Xinghe nodded in satisfaction, patted the back of the chair, and looked at Duan Yiluo: “You can sit now.”
Duan Yiluo gave him a look, then smiled helplessly and sat down.
He quickly adjusted his mood, gripped the mouse, and scrolled through the test data from previous experiments. His mood shifted from being fully confident to becoming increasingly unsure the more he looked. The failed data reflected in his eyes left him feeling a bit depressed.
“Were we too idealistic in our thinking?” Duan Yifan had good eyesight, and he could see the data on the screen while leaning against the table with his arms crossed. He also explained the information to Jiang Nianqiao next to him.
Duan Yiluo continued scrolling down, looking at one failed simulated data set after another. Before seeing the data, he had been very confident. AI had already advanced to a level comparable to the human brain, so logically, such an implantation shouldn’t be a major problem.
He simply hadn’t considered enough factors. First, patient privacy was already stored in the Hypermnesia Chip with specialized database privacy handling. If an AI voice system were added, the patient’s privacy would, to some extent, be uploaded to the cloud, including even more sensitive content.
Even if the technology was feasible, patients might not agree.
He hadn’t considered the emotional ramifications, focusing only on the hardware. It wasn’t that he was too idealistic; he simply hadn’t thought things through completely.
“Don’t rush.”
Just as he was lost for ideas, a broad, firm chest pressed against his back. Solid arms rested on either side of his own. One hand pointed to a specific data point on the screen: “This one has the lowest rejection reaction among all the data. We can refer to this simulated data set, but we need to find a volunteer. After all, machine simulation experiments are slightly different from actual humans.”
The voice above his head was slightly low but calm in tone, as if unaffected by all the failed data.
Duan Yiluo turned his head and looked up at Lu Xinghe: “Where do you plan to find a volunteer?”
Perhaps the distance was too close. Even at this angle, tilting his head up to speak, he could feel the other man’s breath and vaguely smelled that forbidden Ebony Rose pheromone again. It was too close.
Lu Xinghe stood up as if nothing had happened, his Adam’s apple bobbing. He said calmly, “I can be the volunteer.”
Duan Yifan laughed when he heard that: “Are you sick or something, that you’re volunteering?”
Lu Xinghe: “…” He shot a look at Duan Yifan.
Duan Yifan felt a chill run down his spine from that look. He cleared his throat, covering his mouth with a fist, and repeated: “My point is, a volunteer who already has the Hypermnesia Chip implanted and has some minor physical ailments would be more suitable.”
“I can do it.”
Lu Xinghe looked at Duan Yiluo, his brow slightly furrowed.
Duan Yiluo turned his chair to face the three of them. After thinking it over, he said seriously, “The original purpose of our research topic was to implant a voice system into the Hypermnesia Chip for patients who need it, which falls under technological innovation. But given the current uncertainties and the need for multiple experiments, it’s unreasonable to look for other volunteers right now. Therefore, I believe I am the most suitable candidate. Xinghe, you are perfectly healthy, and having you as the test subject wouldn’t achieve the goal of this project.”
Lu Xinghe didn’t like what Duan Yiluo said—what did he mean by ‘perfectly healthy’? But he knew what Duan Yiluo was referring to.
“That’s right. Zai Zai, you’re allergic to eggs and have a bit of night blindness. This voice system would be quite useful for you.” Jiang Nianqiao also thought of his delicate younger brother, Yan Muyi: “It would actually be useful for my brother too, but he’s still young, and my dad probably won’t agree.”
“Exactly. So I want to try it on myself first.” Duan Yiluo saw Lu Xinghe frowning and lightly nudged his shoe with his own, trying to make his expression less severe: “Xinghe, what do you think?”
“I don’t think much of it,” Lu Xinghe replied flatly, then leaned against the table and didn’t speak again.
Duan Yiluo frowned: “Just now you volunteered yourself, so why is it unacceptable when it comes to me?”
“How can that be the same?” Lu Xinghe didn’t know why he felt so choked up, and a hint of annoyance crossed his brow: “Anyway, I disagree.”
Duan Yiluo didn’t understand why his reaction was so strong all of a sudden. He looked at Duan Yifan and Jiang Nianqiao: “What do the two of you think?”
Duan Yifan and Jiang Nianqiao simultaneously shrugged: “We’ll go with you.”
Lu Xinghe gave them a heavy, meaningful look.
Duan Yifan and Jiang Nianqiao pretended not to notice. One played with the edge of the table, and the other fiddled with a pen. Since Duan Yiluo was there, they weren’t afraid of Lu Xinghe.
“Fine, the minority obeys the majority. We’ll give it a try.” Duan Yiluo stood up, intending to push the chair back, but Lu Xinghe gripped his gland at the back of his neck. The warmth of the palm made the spot where his gland was located feel sensitive, and he instinctively tried to pull away.
But he failed, and was instead pulled directly toward him.
He stumbled two steps, nearly losing his balance.
“Duan Yiluo, can’t you for once consider my feelings? What do you mean by the minority obeys the majority?” Seeing Duan Yiluo start to leave, Lu Xinghe extended his long arm, grabbed the back of his neck, and hooked him back.
Duan Yiluo stepped directly onto Lu Xinghe’s white sneakers to steady himself. Feeling a slight pain in the back of his neck, he looked up, his voice tinged with annoyance: “Lu Xinghe, can you tell me why you’re yelling at me?”
“I’m not yelling at you.”
“Yes, you hurt me.”
“…”
The atmosphere held a moment of tension.
Lu Xinghe then realized his grip might have been too strong. Meeting Duan Yiluo’s slightly angry eyes, he uncomfortably looked away and lowered the hand that had been holding the slender neck: “I apologize, I was wrong.”
Actually, he had only been holding it lightly, but he forgot that Duan Yiluo had already presented as an Omega, whose sensitivity would be much higher than before he presented. He must have hurt him by gripping too hard.
“Then tell me now why I can’t be this volunteer.” Duan Yiluo put some distance between himself and Lu Xinghe, otherwise, he could easily be affected by the scent of the Alpha pheromone on the other man.
“I’m afraid something will happen to you. No one can guarantee this thing is safe.” Lu Xinghe leaned against the table, his hands slightly clenched. He unconsciously rubbed his palm, as if he could still feel the slightly raised spot he had just touched.
Was that the gland?
It seemed so.
Did he press too hard just now? Did he hurt him?
“I know there will definitely be risks, big or small. However, I have a lot of faith in my dad’s Hypermnesia Chip, and I also believe we can try to develop this voice AI. How will we know if we don’t try?” Duan Yiluo repeated what he had said to his father last night to his friends.
The smart voice system has a program. What’s needed now is to implant this program into the chip, and then implant the chip into a human body for a period of reaction testing. If the rejection rate drops to roughly the same level as the Hypermnesia Chip’s index, it will be a success.
Conversely, it would be unfeasible.
The young man, writing out the methods on the whiteboard with a pen, was radiant and full of spirit. He seemed neither confused nor deterred by the difficulties they encountered, maintaining his resolve even when including his own body in the experiment plan.
It was as if he wanted to unleash abilities beyond his high-school age from his slender body.
And the facts proved that Duan Yiluo did possess this capability.
As soon as he started high school, several top foreign universities had already extended invitations for him to enter college, thanks to the gold medals he won in several international physics competitions. However, he had his own plan and choice: he wanted to methodically complete his three years of high school, and he would choose his future path after those three years were over.
Talent could be developed, but some time, once passed, was simply passed.
Lu Xinghe listened intently. His role in this competition was text output; all the papers needed to be translated into English, so he had to remember everything Duan Yiluo was saying.
On the whiteboard, beautiful handwriting penned formula after formula, along with Duan Yiluo’s organized flow of ideas.
He watched with fascination, and also felt a strong sense of crisis.
The little rose that had grown up with him seemed to be getting more dazzling, too easily seen by others. If he wasn’t careful and it slipped away, he would surely be miserable.
It absolutely, positively couldn’t be plucked by someone else.
Absolutely not.
