The Zombie I Flirted With After Losing My Memory, Who Was Pretending to be an Alpha, Is Actually My Ex - Chapter 47
Chapter 47: Master!
The familiar weight in her hand caused Teng Xi to daze for a split second. The Miaodao was long and elegant, its dark green blade radiating a chilling sense of slaughter. The blade seemed to possess a soul; the moment it returned to Teng Xi’s grip, it hummed with a vibration of pure excitement.
Teng Xi looked up toward the direction the sword had flown from. It was “Miss Xi,” whom she had met that morning. The woman had her hair in a high ponytail, her brows arched slightly. Maintaining the posture of her throw, she spun gracefully and plunged a dagger deep into a zombie’s forehead. Black-red blood sprayed out, but she habitually turned her head and waved her sleeve to avoid the splatter.
Sensing Teng Xi’s burning gaze, “Miss Xi” turned and provocatively raised an eyebrow at her. Then, with a practiced high kick and downward press, she pinned a zombie to the ground and drove her dagger into its temple. Though she didn’t speak, Teng Xi saw a clear challenge in her eyes—a desire to compete.
Teng Xi found “Miss Xi’s” sudden competitive streak somewhat baffling. But there was no time to think; another zombie lunged.
Teng Xi gripped the Miaodao, her left hand grasping the scabbard behind her. With a coordinated swing of both hands, the blade left the sheath with a sharp clink. If Feng Sisi had been there, she would have screamed at the sheer coolness of the draw. With a spinning slash, the blade sliced through a zombie’s neck while the scabbard swept out, knocking the zombies behind her three meters back. The entire sequence was crisp, efficient, and devoid of any wasted motion.
In the distance, “Miss Xi” curled her lip, the excitement in her eyes intensifying.
This outbreak had come too suddenly. Whether it was because Qi Yin was overconfident in her island or not, the villa lacked any real security measures. With so many people attending the trial, a horrific cycle began: zombies biting humans, humans turning into zombies, and those new zombies biting more humans.
Teng Xi finally looked past the throng of bodies and zombies to see the state of the villa’s main entrance. When the outbreak began, people’s first instinct was to flee, but they found the doors wouldn’t budge. No matter how much they smashed or rammed against them, the doors remained sealed.
The islanders then turned their eyes toward the second floor. Many had seen Qi Yin being escorted upstairs by bodyguards. Survival instinct drove the crowd to rush the stairs in a swarm. However, the bodyguards clearly had no intention of letting everyone into the safe room, forcing the islanders to scatter into other rooms.
In the face of life and death, humans are selfish. Teng Xi knew exactly what would happen to those left outside. She wanted to save them, but she couldn’t save everyone. This strain of the virus was fast; the bitten completed the transformation in mere minutes before lunging at the next living person.
Teng Xi saved another person from a zombie’s jaws, only to turn around and face a woman she had rescued just minutes before. The woman had already turned; half her face had been chewed away, revealing white bone. With one strike of her blade, the zombified woman collapsed at her feet.
Fewer and fewer living people remained in the villa. Most were crowding toward the roof, but the stairs leading up had no defenses, and the zombies were in hot pursuit. The zombies surrounding Teng Xi were increasing in number, threatening to engulf her. She realized staying here was a dead end; she had to secure high ground and create a safe zone, or they would all join the ranks of the undead.
“Miss Xi!” Teng Xi shouted, her voice cutting through the sounds of carnage. “The stairs!”
But “Miss Xi” seemed completely oblivious to her meaning. Her red lips parted to utter two words: “Sixteen.” Her dagger plunged into another head. “Seventeen.”
Teng Xi frowned, immediately realizing she was counting her kills. “Psychopath.” Seeing that the other wouldn’t cooperate, Teng Xi flipped over a zombie’s head, using the momentum to sprint toward the stairs.
It had only been ten-odd minutes since the outbreak began, and the chaos was absolute. Teng Xi understood that trying to organize the panicked survivors to fight back was a total fantasy. A deep sense of helplessness washed over her.
Reaching the second-floor corridor, she found to her despair that all the room doors were locked from the inside—likely by the first wave of people to reach the floor. Yet, screams still echoed from within some of those rooms. Saving people felt like a sick joke in this situation.
The howl of a zombie echoed behind her. The terrifying roar, right at her ear, made the hair on her neck stand up. Teng Xi was about to swing her blade when a flash of inspiration hit her as she saw the end of the corridor. She sprinted toward a console table, grabbed a vase, and smashed it against a zombie’s head. The vase shattered, spraying water and shards, but the wet zombie didn’t hesitate for a second and continued its lunge.
Fangs stained with stringy, viscous blood were inches from her. The face, missing one eyeball, was almost pressed against her own, and the sickening stench of rot filled her lungs. At this range, the long Miaodao was too cumbersome to pull back for a slash.
Suddenly, the zombie’s face froze. A final gurgle escaped its throat, and it fell straight onto Teng Xi. She shoved the corpse off, her clothes now covered in black blood. A dagger glittered in the back of the zombie’s skull.
“Master!”
The deafening roar almost made Teng Xi drop her sword.
“Feng Sisi!?” Teng Xi exclaimed.
In the next second, as if possessed by a god of war, Feng Sisi killed her way to her master within seconds and gave her a massive bear hug. “Master! Waaaah! I missed you so much! I thought I’d never see you again!” Feng Sisi blubbered, her tears and snot flowing freely as she declared how much she had longed for this reunion.
“Eldest Miss, can you please not wipe your snot on my clothes…”
“Master, how can you be like this…” The joy of reunion evaporated instantly. “Master, you…”
Before Feng Sisi could finish, Teng Xi grabbed her and swung her toward the console table behind them, making her wince in pain.
“Master! Even if I’m not your wife, you can’t be this murderous!”
Feng Sisi turned to see Teng Xi pulling her Miaodao out of a zombie’s head, trailing a spray of blood.
“Hm? What did you say?”
“…I said, Master, that was a great throw.” Having narrowly escaped death, Feng Sisi immediately resumed her sycophantic behavior.
The number of zombies behind them was growing; there were no more living people in sight. “To the roof!” Teng Xi ordered, and the two of them fought their way up.
Unexpectedly, upon reaching the roof, they saw several people cornered against the edge by zombies. “Save… save us!”
The two shared a look and, with silent understanding, charged into the pack from the left and right, their blades falling with precision. There weren’t many zombies here—only a handful—and the duo made short work of them.
“Monsters… they’re all monsters…”
Only a dozen or so survivors remained on the roof, huddled together in terror, their minds fractured by the horror. Just minutes ago, everyone had been fine; they couldn’t comprehend how their friends and family had suddenly become man-eating monsters.
But their terror was far from over. A heavy thud startled everyone as they looked toward the roof entrance. “Miss Xi” appeared with her bodyguard, both covered in blood. They threw a zombie three meters away and immediately turned to slam the roof door shut.
“D*mmit!”
Teng Xi finally saw “Miss Xi” lose her composure. The roof door was a glass door that had long since shattered, leaving nothing but a frame. Behind that gaping frame, a mountain of zombies began to emerge. They were piling on top of one another to climb the stairs, revealing crimson fangs and pitch-black eyes like soul-reaping demons.
The two women hurried to overturn wooden cabinets and iron racks to block the entrance, but everyone knew these obstacles wouldn’t hold for even a minute.
“Why hasn’t Qi Yin’s security arrived after all this time?” Teng Xi looked over the railing toward the ground. No reinforcements were in sight. It seemed this villa, peaceful on the outside, had been cut off from the world.
“Aaaaah! Monsters—!”
“Help… help me…”
“Jump! If we jump, we’ll be saved!”
“Yes! Jump!”
In the middle of the frantic chatter, several people who had been driven insane by fear climbed the railing and threw themselves off.
“Jump! I’d rather die from the fall than turn into a monster!”
The survivors were being pushed over the edge by the situation; the black mass of zombies at the door was the final straw.
“This can’t go on!” Teng Xi’s grip on the Miaodao tightened until her knuckles turned white. “If these zombies jump down too, and if they don’t die from the fall, then this island…”
She didn’t finish the sentence, but both Feng Sisi and “Miss Xi” understood. If the zombies followed them down, the island would become an island of the living dead. Where would they find another pure land?
“Sisi, go take care of those people.” Teng Xi pushed Feng Sisi toward the crowd while she herself walked toward the pile of zombies, blade in hand.
“What do you think you’re doing?!” “Miss Xi” grabbed Teng Xi’s wrist, glaring at her with a sharp gaze. “Do you think you can handle all of them?”
The wooden cabinets creaked under the weight of the zombies, and the iron bars holding them began to wobble.
“I can.” Teng Xi didn’t hesitate for a second. Excluding the dozens they had killed downstairs, she estimated there were over a hundred zombies left. She knew exactly what she was facing, but she had to do it. There were still people on this island she needed to protect.
“You’re crazy!” “Miss Xi” frowned, but seeing Teng Xi’s expression, she knew persuasion was useless. Dropping a “Suit yourself,” she took her bodyguard to find an alternative way down.
Teng Xi slowly placed her scabbard on the ground and gripped her sword with both hands. She executed a flashy flourish and settled into a combat stance.
“Master, don’t you dare think about leaving me behind this time.” A shadow fell beside her. Teng Xi didn’t look, but she let out a small smile.
In an instant, the obstacles at the roof entrance were smashed through by the horde. The zombies looked at the two women with excitement, scrambling to reach their food.
Teng Xi lost track of how many hundreds of swings she had made. Her hand was numb against the hilt, but she knew she couldn’t stop. She couldn’t let the zombies pour out onto the island. But it felt like the number of zombies was growing, far exceeding the number of people who had been in the building.
Beside her, Feng Sisi’s movements grew sluggish, as if she were reaching her limit.
“Xi-Xi!”
Just as she cut down a zombie in front of her but was knocked back by another, a soft, familiar voice rang out from behind.
