Chapter 13: The Password
The faces of the group turned pale as the howls of the zombies wafted from the distance, forming a series of echoes in the vast space. Before one cry faded, another rose, growing louder and louder like fire ants biting at their eardrums.
The vibrations beneath their feet continued to intensify, heralding the approaching horror.
Daring not to delay, Teng Xi squatted down and used both hands to strain against the anti-theft chains, attempting to solve the problem with sheer brute force.
“Open the door!” Si Qinghan glared at the man with rage, slapping the rolling shutter with a series of loud bangs. Having received a command, the man returned to his spot and began the voice broadcast once more.
“Please enter the password.”
“D*mmit!” Teng Xi cursed under her breath. Her fingers pulling the iron chain turned white and throbbed with pain, yet the chain didn’t show even a single crack. Suddenly, a clack echoed beside her—Xie Jinbing had actually snapped one of the anti-theft locks with her bare hands.
“Holy crap! Fast, fast, fast!” Teng Xi didn’t have time to marvel. She could already see the blood-drenched zombie horde; the air was thick with a nauseating stench of decay.
Only Xie Jinbing knew that breaking that one chain was her absolute limit. Currently, the best option was to find another way.
“Aaaaah—Help! Save me—” The screams of terrified humans came from the front of the zombie horde. It was they who had led the zombies here, and they were now only a hundred meters away from Teng Xi and the others.
Behind them was a lethal purgatory; before them was a closed-door Eden. Everyone felt the irony: hope was right there, yet they were blocked by a “god” they couldn’t communicate with.
“Please enter the password.”
The man’s standard broadcaster voice sounded more like the death knell of a ghost in their ears. The group looked at the adjacent paths, preparing to bolt, when suddenly—
“Open Sesame!”
A strange voice rang out from the front of the crowd, quickly reaching their ears. The words that followed made them halt their escape.
“Password correct.” The man’s warm, thick broadcaster voice came through clearly over the chaotic roars of the beasts.
“Quick, quick, quick!”
The man’s unlocking speed was incredible. Every key was inserted into the keyholes with unerring accuracy—one lock per second, click, click, click.
“Rumble—“
As the rolling shutter was pushed up, the crowd from behind had already reached them. A rough glance suggested there were thirty or forty people, but the iron door was small; passing through two at a time was the absolute limit.
The zombies behind were less than fifty meters away. The stench of rot was already hitting them, and the panicked crowd grew even more chaotic. No one wanted to be the last one in, and everyone began to squeeze forward frantically. In an instant, it turned into a complete mess.
“Get the fuck out of my way!” A man’s rough voice barked in Teng Xi’s ear. She felt herself being shoved hard, seeing herself getting further and further from the iron door.
Teng Xi’s brow furrowed. Using her strength, she seized the momentum and shoved one person inside.
Xie Jinbing, who already had a cold face, gave a cold snort as she watched these humans completely discard their morality for the sake of survival. Suddenly, she felt a force against her back, pushing her along with the crowd. A shadow fell over her head—it was the pink baseball cap that had been hanging on Teng Xi’s pink backpack. It covered half of her face, making it difficult for anyone to recognize her identity as a zombie at a glance.
In just a few seconds, the zombies had reached the rear of the crowd. Those trailing at the back were pale with fright, using every ounce of strength to push inside. If there had been any order, they could have passed through smoothly, but unfortunately, everyone was afraid, and everyone was in chaos.
Si Qinghan relied on her raw strength to pull Yao Zhi with one hand and Feng Sisi with the other. She had never been a saint; since no one else was observing the “first come, first served” rule, she saw no need to be hypocritically polite. She was about to squeeze in when, near the threshold, Feng Sisi hit a pressure point on her hand, causing her to lose her grip.
“Take Mother Yao inside, don’t worry.” Feng Sisi rubbed her reddened wrist and stepped aside to stand by Teng Xi.
Teng Xi, who had been pushed out of the center of the chaos, noticed that a group of men in suits were using their muscular builds to constantly shove those around them. Most of the patients had been pushed out, and at the very back of the crowd, there was a pregnant woman.
Because she had difficulty moving, she was being carried by someone, her face resting on the shoulder of her carrier as she looked back at the approaching zombies.
Teng Xi shoved another doctor forward—who was caught and pulled in by the group inside—and then charged toward the zombie horde, Miaodao in hand.
If the zombies caught up, not only would the people here be finished, but those who had already squeezed inside wouldn’t have time to close the door and would be doomed as well.
“Ah—Zombies!” A piercing scream erupted from the back of the crowd.
The doctor carrying the pregnant woman was shoved hard by someone. He lost his balance and fell to the ground. This delay allowed the zombies to catch up quickly, their jagged teeth baring at the doctor.
Teng Xi’s brows knit tightly. She wanted to be faster, wishing she could teleport, but she was not a god; she couldn’t save everyone.
When the zombie bit down, the sound of fangs piercing skin seemed to happen right next to her ear—small, yet it exploded in her heart.
The pregnant woman, who had been lying quietly on the doctor’s shoulder, suddenly erupted with strength. She rose and shielded the doctor in her arms. Those venomous fangs sank into her shoulder. With a forceful tug, the zombie ripped away a chunk of flesh, blood splashing across half of the doctor’s face.
A pained wail escaped the pregnant woman, drawing the attention of those around her. The crowd’s reaction was “spectacular”—the men in suits, who looked decent enough, picked up their pace even more, wanting nothing more than to be as far away from her as possible.
The zombie, having tasted blood, grew ecstatic and prepared to pounce again, only to have its head severed by a long blade. The head, still clutching a piece of flesh in its mouth, rolled several times, stopping at the feet of the suited man who had just done the shoving, causing him to scream incessantly.
“Go, now!” Teng Xi roared, waking the pregnant woman and the doctor from their shock. The doctor looked at the bitten woman and hesitated. Ultimately, he abandoned her and rushed toward the iron door.
