- Chapter 96 - Leaning on Qin Yan’s Shoulder, Lazily Watching Her Take Action
Xia Mingtang had been recovering well in the hospital, and today was the day for her discharge.
Xia Huaying had been discharged earlier. The elderly lady had been worried about her injured granddaughter and initially planned to stay in the hospital for a couple more days. However, she was persuaded to leave by the two little wives, Qin Yan and Xia Mingtang, together.
On the day of discharge, Qin Yan went to the front desk to handle the paperwork, while Xia Huaying stayed in the ward to chat with Xia Mingtang.
Originally, the grandmother and granddaughter were happily talking about everyday matters, when an unexpected pair of visitors arrived: Xia Zhenwei and his son.
The two father and son acted somewhat differently than usual. Especially Xia Zhenwei—his normally domineering “alpha dad” persona disappeared, and he fussed over Xia Mingtang with concern. Anyone unaware might have thought they were deeply bonded father and daughter.
Xia Mingtang assumed he was just trying to make a good impression in front of his grandmother and didn’t expose him, though she also didn’t bother to play along with the act of filial piety.
She tried to avoid giving Xia Zhenwei too much attention, but he insisted on talking. When his concern seemed ineffective, he abruptly shifted topics.
“Mingtang, seeing you unharmed puts me at ease. Your brother and I were both very worried these past few days.
“I know you were upset after your sudden injury, which is why you had someone beat up your brother a couple of times.
“Now that you’re recovered, don’t trouble your brother anymore.”
Xia Mingtang was dumbfounded: When did I ever have anyone beat up Xia Chayi?
And why was this old man acting so peculiar today, behaving like a meddling parent in front of his grandmother? Most astonishingly, where did he get the courage to falsely accuse her without any proof?
Xia Mingtang had never been the type to tolerate injustice quietly; she shot back immediately, even to her biological father.
“Your precious son does so many unscrupulous things every day, offending countless people. Shouldn’t you have some sense of that?
“I’m just about to be discharged, and you rush here to spread lies—what a miserable thing to do!”
Xia Huaying glanced at Xia Mingtang, intending to remind her to speak politely. But on second thought, she realized it was rather unfortunate timing.
Xia Zhenwei, surprisingly, did not get angry at Xia Mingtang’s retort and instead signaled Xia Chayi with his eyes.
Xia Chayi stepped forward with a meek, defensive demeanor. “Mingtang, someone saw the people who beat me enter Qin Yan’s company. She sent them, so wasn’t it your idea? It’s fine; let’s clarify it now.”
Xia Mingtang rubbed her sore temples: Qin Yan sent people to beat him?
“Yes, I sent them,” Qin Yan said, returning from completing the discharge procedure, closing the door behind her.
She took Xia Mingtang’s hand and gave Xia Huaying a knowing glance, speaking candidly.
“I was wrong for doing this. After all, attempted murder is punishable by law. But it was just a couple of beatings—how much harm could that do?”
“Attempted murder?”
The Xia family, three generations present, all reacted in shock.
Qin Yan then pulled out her phone and opened a video, holding the screen before Xia Mingtang and Xia Chayi.
“Do you recognize this person?” she asked.
“That’s him! He tricked me into going to that dodgy stage,” Xia Mingtang replied, her memory of the person who almost caused her death still vivid after staying in the hospital for several days.
Xia Chayi’s expression flickered at the sight of the person in the video but quickly returned to normal. He stepped back and feigned curiosity: “Who’s this?”
Qin Yan sneered. She had anticipated that this person wouldn’t believe anything without proof, so she pressed play.
The video showed Qiu Laowu recounting in detail when Xia Chayi contacted him, the instructions he was given, and even the subsequent escape plans.
Watching the video, the three generations of the Xia family changed expressions multiple times.
Even Xia Chayi, usually adept at maintaining composure, could only manage a surface-level calm.
“Qin Yan, you side with Mingtang because she’s family. But buying off a small-time thug and recording a video just to accuse me of attempted murder—isn’t that too much?”
Xia Zhenwei, who had previously felt Xia Chayi had gone too far, now thought Qin Yan was just slandering his son.
Qin Yan, as expected, calmly put away her phone, a hint of ruthlessness behind her serene smile.
“Since I’m confronting you, I naturally have other evidence. I’m just used to presenting the conclusion first.”
Xia Huaying, experienced in dealing with people of all kinds, had remained silent but had already pieced together much of the story from the reactions of the family.
She tapped her cane and said firmly, “We’ll discuss this back at home.”
Back at the Xia family mansion, a “three-person tribunal” convened.
The three: Xia Huaying, Xia Mingtang, and Qin Yan.
They sat in the main hall, each on a chair, to interrogate Xia Zhenwei and Xia Chayi.
Xia Mingtang, just discharged and still weak, naturally had to be present as the main participant.
She yawned, covering her mouth with a hand, leaning lazily on Qin Yan’s shoulder to watch her take action.
Qin Yan had already gathered all the evidence of Xia Chayi’s attempted murder days ago. The villain had thought he acted flawlessly, even relocating his accomplice safely.
Since the enemy was off guard, Qin Yan had his movements monitored, letting him enjoy a little freedom for a few more days.
The only minor incident was that, while taking care of her injured wife, Qin Yan had seen Xia Mingtang’s vulnerable state and, out of a mix of concern and anger, instructed someone to give Xia Chayi a beating.
She had no intention of hiding this action.
Xia Chayi showed up at the door, making it convenient—no need for Qin Yan to drag him out.
Everything was perfect: they caught the minor accomplice and the head at the same time.
Although Xia Zhenwei hadn’t directly committed attempted murder, he had assisted Xia Chayi behind the scenes. Otherwise, Xia Chayi alone couldn’t have wielded so much power.
As Xia Chayi’s dark deeds were gradually revealed, the supposedly doting “good father” Xia Zhenwei was the first to rise and slap his son hard across the face.
“Traitor! You even dared to harm your own sister. How did I raise you? You’re so disappointing!”
His righteous anger was genuine, though it was less about Xia Chayi harming Xia Mingtang and more about being dragged into trouble by an incompetent son.
Xia Chayi, slapped and abandoned even by his normally supportive father, stopped pretending.
He held his swollen left face and sneered, “Dad, I’ve always acted according to your teachings. You told me that everything in the Xia family belongs to us men. A true man achieves greatness without fussing over small matters.”
Xia Zhenwei turned, meeting Xia Huaying’s icy gaze.
Even his mother, for the first time, looked at him like a stranger, even an enemy.
Panicking, he vented all his frustration on Xia Chayi, beating him with fists and feet.
“Enough!” Xia Huaying struck her cane heavily. “Bring them both out!”
She announced to everyone, “From now on, our Xia family no longer has a place for Xia Zhenwei.”
Xia Zhenwei, realizing his mother was serious, cried for mercy but was dragged out by two guards.
With the matter settled, Xia Huaying and Xia Mingtang didn’t want to see the two men again.
A stranger’s misconduct might provoke anger, but only family can inflict a truly devastating blow.
Xia Huaying, exhausted, retreated to her study despite Xia Mingtang rushing to check on her.
As the victim, Xia Mingtang felt comparatively better. In her mind, the father and son had never been decent people; this just reinforced her perception.
Qin Yan, the only non-Xia present, remained calm throughout.
Xia Zhenwei, having failed to properly raise his son and being expelled, would regret it for the rest of his life.
Xia Chayi, however, was a genuine attempted murderer. Though he had failed, he caused serious harm to Qin Yan’s beloved wife.
Qin Yan resolved to strive for the harshest sentence possible.
At the same time, she made sure Xia Chayi’s future prison companions would “take good care of him.”
