- Chapter 51 - Feeling the Soft Tremble Beneath My Palm
“You know, if you’re tired of staring each other down with Yan every day and it’s getting boring, you could always go stay at the Xia residence for a while.”
“Is your grandmother letting Ah Yan take care of you, always siding with Ah Yan?”
“Exactly. If you want your grandmother to be on your side and see you as reliable, you need to show her that you’re mature, independent, and have your own opinions—not just whining and acting like a child. As for how exactly to do it, that’s something you’ll have to figure out yourself.”
Qin Yan quickly finished playing the recording, her expression darkening.
She took a deep breath, put on her coat, and drove to the Xia family’s old residence.
When Qin Yan arrived, Xia Huaying and Xia Mingtang were having dinner together. Seeing her, Xia Huaying had someone set an extra pair of chopsticks.
“Grandma.”
Qin Yan greeted Xia Huaying politely and sat beside Xia Mingtang.
Xia Mingtang only glanced at her once and then focused on her meal, picking at her food faster than before.
Throughout the meal, her little mouth was very busy—busy eating.
Xia Huaying managed to spare a moment to chat with Qin Yan, asking about their recent life.
Qin Yan responded gracefully, skillfully winning over the elder.
As for Xia Mingtang, who often faked innocence, Xia Huaying didn’t bother exposing her this time.
After five minutes, Xia Mingtang put down her bowl and wiped her mouth with a tissue.
“Grandma, I’m done. I’ll go back to my room to work.”
With that, she hopped upstairs like a little fox with her tail stepped on.
“Take it slow, you’re too hasty,” Xia Huaying called after her, but she acted as if she didn’t hear and soon disappeared at the top of the stairs.
Only Qin Yan and Xia Huaying remained at the table.
Seeing Qin Yan’s attention divided between small talk and glancing at the staircase, Xia Huaying comforted her.
“Tang Tang said the company recently got a big order—from Chuangxiang Technology in the U.S., you know them, right?”
“I know.” Qin Yan nodded, holding her chopsticks.
Xia Huaying sighed in relief. “This child has grown up. After marriage, she became so career-driven. Today she told me her plan, and I was surprised—she actually follows through with her work. When she’s working, she ignores everything else. That reminds me of myself when I was young.”
Qin Yan remained silent, knowing there was more to be said.
“She had originally planned to stay at the company these days, but I worried about her health. The residence is close to her office, so I let her stay here for now. Once the work is done, she can return with you.”
“Grandma—”
Qin Yan started to speak but was gently stopped by Xia Huaying, who patted her hand.
“Young people must prioritize their careers. Tang Tang’s dedication now is thanks to you. It really is a good marriage.”
With that praise, Qin Yan had no reason to continue scolding and took a step back.
“I understand. Can I go upstairs to see Tang Tang? We haven’t seen each other for more than ten hours today.”
“Of course,” Xia Huaying said with a warm smile. “You two are married—you can see her anytime. But don’t run back and forth too much; don’t tire yourself out.”
Qin Yan went upstairs to the study and found Xia Mingtang indeed working diligently at the computer, just as she said.
Xia Mingtang’s initial excuse for working was to gain Xia Huaying’s trust. But now that she had used it, she would see it through.
The demo had many details to adjust. She had already communicated directly with the client’s lead, so her involvement would make the process more efficient.
Noticing someone enter, Xia Mingtang could tell it was Qin Yan just from the footsteps.
She kept her eyes on the screen, typing steadily without shifting her gaze.
“Tang Tang,” Qin Yan called, but was cut off mid-sentence.
“Grandma already told you, right? I’ll be staying here for the next few days, so don’t worry. You focus on what you need to do.”
Her words flowed smoothly without a pause, though a careful listener might detect a slight tremor. Even a simple sentence had been carefully drafted to avoid displeasing this controlling person.
But then she thought: This is the Xia residence—it’s my territory. What’s there to fear?
Qin Yan reached out to stroke the top of her head, feeling the soft tremble beneath her palm, and let out a quiet sigh.
“Focus on your work. I’ll stay here with you for a while.”
Xia Mingtang didn’t dare ask her to leave.
Though a controlling presence nearby made her slightly uneasy, she forced herself to focus and soon got deeply absorbed in her work.
Watching the little fox so focused and serious, Qin Yan noted that unlike her usual bright and bold demeanor, she now exuded a calm, intellectual beauty.
She never imagined the word “intellectual” could describe her little fox. If only she were in a uniform…
Unfortunately, this was Xia’s house.
Qin Yan restrained herself, resisting any impulsive action, despite her fingers being pricked by Xia Mingtang’s sharp nails.
She silently watched by the computer for a while before leaving without a word.
Xia Mingtang looked around the empty room and breathed a sigh of relief—having the home advantage truly felt good.
The Next Day: Fencing Hall
Two fully armored fencers, one in black and one in white, clashed with thin swords, striking back and forth.
Suddenly, the white fencer lunged, piercing the black fencer’s shoulder, side, and thigh, forcing them back step by step.
Finally, a blade pushed the opponent to the ground, the tip pointing at the chest.
“I give up, I give up!” the black-clad Xie An removed her mask, fuming.
“Who plays so recklessly? Did I offend you recently?”
“What do you think?” The white fencer removed her mask, revealing gentle yet antique features, her gaze sharp and cold.
Indeed, Xie An had really offended her.
Gasping for breath, Xie An said, “Did you notice I swapped out your bottle of ‘82 Lafite’?”
Qin Yan pursed her lips in silence.
“Was that because I was caught gossiping at your company last time?”
Qin Yan coldly stared at her.
“You made a scene at the Ji family’s house—but I didn’t tell Auntie. I only heard about it.”
Qin Yan swirled her sword, puncturing a hole in Xie An’s black fencing suit to express her “thanks.”
“You’re at the Xia residence now. Who knows when you’ll return home?” Qin Yan said, her tone full of grievance.
Xie An covered the tear in her clothes, helpless yet mischievous.
“So, you’re lonely and frustrated, and you came to vent on me?”
Qin Yan’s killing gaze made Xie An quickly change her tone.
“Well, I completely understand. When I first met Ran Shu, I also thought maybe I should chain her at home forever.”
“You dare!” Qin Yan pointed her sword closer.
“I wouldn’t dare. I’m just talking,” Xie An said. “But you’re already acting on it.”
Qin Yan didn’t speak.
Xie An continued, “Your wife may be young, but she’s an adult. You can’t control her every move. It’s one thing to guide a child, but you—installing monitors and tracking her comings and goings—make it seem like you’re raising a kid.”
Qin Yan nodded thoughtfully.
Xie An added, “She’s in a rebellious phase. You can’t tighten the reins all the time. Be strict, but also give her some rewards.”
Qin Yan sheathed her sword. “Understood.”
Xie An was left sitting there, baffled: did she really understand?
Xia Mingtang enjoyed these days immensely—no one nagged her about her schedule or diet. She could do whatever she liked.
To maintain her “diligent youth” image for Xia Huaying, she had indeed worked extra hours at the old residence.
She never thought she’d ever work so hard. But the work was trivial compared to the control she faced after marriage.
Only after marriage did one truly value freedom. She regretted being lured by money—divorce now would be such a hassle.
As for Qin Yan, she visited every couple of days with gifts, treats, and gentle words, trying to cheer her up.
Xia Mingtang, however, refused to be swayed and often shared the gifts with the household staff in front of Qin Yan.
With Grandma present, Qin Yan dared not do anything.
Yes, having the home advantage was bliss!
But happiness is short-lived.
Half a month later, Chuangxiang Technology’s ad production neared completion.
This meant Xia Mingtang would soon lose her excuse to stay at the Xia residence.
On this day, Qin Yan came by again with gifts.
Xia Huaying observed their interactions carefully. She could see that her granddaughter was deliberately avoiding Qin Yan.
Yet, seeing Qin Yan’s gentle and attentive attitude toward her headstrong granddaughter, Xia Huaying didn’t intervene.
A little friction between newlyweds was normal, especially considering Xia Mingtang’s personality.
So, while both were present, Xia Huaying asked, “Tang Tang, how’s the Chuangxiang project going?”
Xia Mingtang, aware of her grandmother’s intent, didn’t dare lie but used careful phrasing.
“The concept ad is complete, but there are still many details to discuss with the client.”
Xia Huaying nodded. “So you’re not too busy these days. Go back to your own home—newlyweds shouldn’t linger at their parents’ house.”
Hearing this, Xia Mingtang nearly broke down in mock misery. Xia Huaying, however, seemed to anticipate this:
“Lin, come with me to see the flowers in the yard.”
Leaving the newlywed couple alone, exchanging glances in silence.
