- Chapter 11 - Land of Tenderness
“Ah le ah le, seeing such a beautiful smile on your face, sister what a rare sight. Not like me, who doesn’t get a kind look from you all year round.”
The girl with ink black hair cascading like a waterfall looked at Jiang Ji with a bright smile. Her voice was sweet, but something in her eyes made one’s back go cold.
“You look like you’re in heat… Who do you think is coming?”
Jiang Ji’s expression immediately turned distant, a thin layer of frost coating her features. Her voice, as she spoke, was sharp and cold:
“That has nothing to do with you.”
“Eh”
The girl’s tone rose playfully, as if she hadn’t noticed Jiang Ji’s expression at all.
“We’re family, you know. Don’t always treat me so coldly. If it were Miss Li standing here, you wouldn’t be acting like this, would you?”
Jiang Ji’s brow furrowed tightly, a flash of sharp impatience and anger in her eyes. She knew this girl’s words were always unpleasant, but today they were particularly stinging.
“If you have something to say, just say it. No need to go around in circles.”
The girl blinked, her smile unwavering if anything, it grew even more sincere.
“Seriously, sister? You’re really letting some woman you’ve barely met steal your soul? Now I’m curious what kind of magic does she have?”
Her voice carried thinly veiled mockery.
“Don’t even think about laying a hand on her.”
Jiang Ji’s eyes turned dark and cold, her voice laced with barely restrained anger.
“Don’t be so nervous. I won’t touch your girl so long as she doesn’t get in my way. So, you better keep a close eye on her.”
Jiang Ji’s expression eased slightly. “She’s just a regular person. She doesn’t know anything. She won’t be a problem for you.”
“Relax, sister. Don’t think I’m that evil. If there’s no conflict of interest, I honestly do hope you can be happy.”
She bit down on the word “happy” with emphasis “shiawase”, the Japanese word for it.
The girl folded her hands beneath her chin elegantly, yet the feeling she gave off was more beast than human.
“But, sister… don’t forget. You’re a Saionji. Everything you have your wealth, your status was given to you by Mother. Don’t become one of those ungrateful wretches.”
“I don’t need you to remind me.”
“Oh dear I’m just worried you’ll lose yourself in the land of tenderness and forget your duties.”
At that moment, the doorbell rang again. The sound felt heavier now, no longer as light and crisp as before.
“Boss Jiang, I’m here hm?”
Li Nianyi caught sight of a familiar face and instinctively switched languages.
“Dai?”
“Hi Good evening, Miss Li.”
Dai tilted her head and waved her fingers like strumming harp strings.
“Didn’t expect to run into you here.”
Dai nodded with youthful energy in her tone:
“Yeah, yeah, same here.”
Li Nianyi was a bit surprised. Of all places to see Saionji Dai it would never have crossed her mind that she and Jiang Ji would be associated. The two of them were completely different vibes.
“You two know each other?”
Her gaze flicked between them.
“Not really,” Jiang Ji answered first, almost biting her tongue. But the moment the words left her lips, regret followed. Another lie. Yet again.
One lie takes a thousand more to cover. That was exactly Jiang Ji’s current state.
“Yes, not exactly close,” Dai echoed with a smile, making no attempt to expose her after all, what she said wasn’t untrue.
Jiang Ji’s face showed nothing, but inside, she quietly let out a sigh of relief.
Even so, Li Nianyi couldn’t shake the strange vibe in the air. She couldn’t put her finger on it, but something definitely felt off.
Meanwhile, Dai smiled silently as she watched Jiang Ji’s gaze linger on Li Nianyi.
Jiang Ji probably wished she could disappear right then. Well, mission accomplished no need to stick around and make things more awkward.
Dai glanced at her watch and feigned surprise:
“Wow, it’s already this late? My curfew’s coming up I better get going.”
She stood up.
“Well then, I won’t disturb your little date. See you in class tomorrow, Miss Li”
She waved at Li Nianyi and threw Jiang Ji a meaningful glance before turning to leave a clear warning: I can strike at her anytime.
“Mm, see you tomorrow.”
Li Nianyi watched Dai walk out of the bar. Everything had happened so fast she couldn’t quite process it all.
“Tokyo really is small, huh? I can’t believe Dai was here. Oh, I haven’t told you she’s my little boss. The one who gave me that super high paying tutoring gig. But I never imagined you two would know each other too.”
The more sincerely she explained, the guiltier Jiang Ji felt. The shame surged through her like a tide.
“She’s not anyone important. Nianyi, let’s not talk about her… Want something to drink? It’s on me.”
Jiang Ji stiffly tried to change the topic. Li Nianyi could clearly see how awkward she was but chose not to call her out on it.
She didn’t believe Jiang Ji could have anything improper going on with a high school girl. Still, her unwillingness to talk left a little thorn in her heart.
But Li Nianyi was never someone who pried too much into others’ business.
She believed in saying the right things for the right relationships. Besides, she had plenty of secrets of her own she hadn’t told Jiang Ji.
There’s always time.
“Not in the mood for drinks tonight, Boss Jiang. If you can spare the time from your business, come shopping with me.
I haven’t had dinner yet I want to grab some street food.”
She blinked her beautiful, fox like eyes, clearly confident that Jiang Ji wouldn’t say no.
“Ahem… Wherever you want to go, I’ll come with. And it’s not like this bar’s exactly booming anyway.”
Even now, Jiang Ji still wasn’t used to Li Nianyi’s gaze so direct, it made her dizzy, like she couldn’t hide a single thought from this woman.
“I only just got to Tokyo, so I don’t really know what’s fun. You take me wherever. I’m all yours tonight.”
Her voice was sweet like iced sea salt lemon tea with just the right amount of sugar, so refreshing in the oppressive heat of the season.
Especially now, with that slight trace of coquettishness in her tone, it was absolutely lethal.
“How about Yoyogi Park? There’s a limited time night market these days. If you like lively crowds, it’s perfect.”
“I’m in! Let’s go!”
To make things easier, Li Nianyi had changed into something more mobile a black tank top and long pants. Afraid of the evening chill, she’d thrown on a leather jacket.
Not overly revealing, not outright sexy but every inch of her screamed allure, and Jiang Ji didn’t dare glance again at that snowy white neck.
“Yoyogi’s not far. We’ll take my bike. You can ride pillion.”
As she locked the front door, Jiang Ji pointed to her motorcycle nearby. It was bold in red and black, with a heavy metal look kind of retro in style.
Li Nianyi didn’t know much about bikes, but even she could tell it was expensive.
“Whoa, that’s so cool!”
She couldn’t help but gush.
In her mind, Jiang Ji was more the quiet, refined type like a sleek, dangerous character in a suit, sitting in the back of a luxury car, silently observing the world with deep, unreadable eyes.
With long hair slicked back, preferably.
But reality was different: Jiang Ji, long legs astride a motorcycle, dressed in comfy loungewear that completely clashed with the aggressive style of the bike. The extreme contrast actually made the visual more striking.
Li Nianyi’s leather jacket, on the other hand, matched the bike perfectly.
“Here helmet.”
She accepted the item from Jiang Ji, mentally noting that she had to see Jiang Ji dressed like her imagined version one day.
This woman may act clueless, but she had the face of a cold, elegant beauty looked like the ultimate top tier alpha when silent.
That was Li Nianyi’s first impression, at least.
“This is my first time riding on someone else’s bike, you know.”
The voice from behind carried excitement.
“Is that so? I’m honored.”
Jiang Ji’s tone sounded flat probably because Li Nianyi couldn’t see the smile she couldn’t suppress.
“I tend to go a bit fast. Hold on tight.”
“Okay”
And, as if to prove her point, the bike roared to life and shot forward.
Tonight’s rain wasn’t heavy more like a soft, lingering flirtation, falling gently onto their skin. But Li Nianyi thought: if only it rained harder, like a full-blown summer storm it’d feel even more liberating.
The wind screamed past her ears, the world blurring. She couldn’t believe Jiang Ji could still go this fast. She wanted to shout at the top of her lungs to scream and let her frustration be carried off by wind and rain but she was afraid of seeming crazy, so she kept quiet.
Instead, her arms around Jiang Ji’s waist tightened.
Despite how unsafe it should’ve felt, her cheek resting against Jiang Ji’s back made her feel like she was being held up by a thick, fluffy cloud.
So good. She liked it.
Little did she know, Jiang Ji’s soul was halfway to the heavens. Even through layers of fabric, she could feel her warmth the scent, the touch nothing was stopping it from flooding her senses.
She wanted to slow down, to make this moment last longer.
But she was afraid that if she did, those arms around her might loosen.
Jiang Ji had never known she was capable of this kind of emotional turmoil.
Maybe Dai was right.
This really was the ultimate land of tenderness so intoxicating, it was impossible to escape.
