The White Moonlight is So Scheming - Chapter 15
In the tree at the center of the school building,
the tireless sparrows chirped incessantly.
The morning’s unique dampness, mixed with the fresh scent of the lawn, drifted through the classroom window, lifting the white
gauze curtains by the sill.
With an arm propped on the desk,
her head resting lazily in one hand, Ji Zhijie quietly savored the tranquility unique to the early morning in the empty classroom,
a subtle glimmer of anticipation hidden in her eyes.
“Ji Zhijie! I’m here!”
Turning at the sound, Ji Zhijie’s eyes flickered with an almost imperceptible smile. “I can hear you. No need to shout.”
Pouting, Shen Juexia muttered under her breath, just loud enough for herself to hear, “Such a pain.”
“What was that? I didn’t quite catch it,” Ji Zhijie teased, pretending not to have read her lips, her eyes narrowing slightly as
she watched the young lady approach. “I only asked you not to shout, not to stop talking altogether.”
Always so picky.
Too loud is wrong, too quiet is also wrong.
Lowering her gaze, Shen Juexia silently cursed Ji Zhijie a few times in her heart. But when she looked up again, her lips curled
into an obedient, ingratiating smile. “I got up extra early today to make breakfast for you myself!”
“You can cook?” Ji Zhijie eyed Shen Juexia skeptically, an inexplicable sense of foreboding creeping in.
Tilting her chin up, Shen Juexia declared with exaggerated seriousness, “Who do you think you’re looking down on? I’m naturally
talented at everything!”
Intrigued by her confidence,
Ji Zhijie’s fingers tapped lightly against her arm before she pulled out a chair for Shen Juexia. “Alright then, let’s see what you’ve got.”
“Just wait! Once you taste it, you’ll be begging me to make it every day!”
With that, Shen Juexia set down her backpack, took her seat, and solemnly retrieved two identical lunchboxes from a compartment.
Stealing glances at her movements from the corner of her eye,
Ji Zhijie’s lips curled slightly as she accepted the lunchbox, flipping open the latch.
“It looks… surprisingly decent?” Tilting her head, Ji Zhijie offered an honest assessment to the young lady whose face
practically screamed Praise me!
“Of course! Who do you think I am?” Shen Juexia brushed her nose with a finger, her eyes brimming with pride.
Slipping on a disposable glove and under Shen Juexia’s unwavering scrutiny, Ji Zhijie picked up the sandwich and took a generous
bite just to humor her.
Crunch…
Her teeth scraped against something hard, and a strange sound echoed in her mind.
“Why does your sandwich make noise when I eat it?” Frowning, Ji Zhijie hesitated before taking another bite.
“No idea?” Leaning closer, Shen Juexia studied the sandwich in Ji Zhijie’s hand and ventured a guess. “Maybe the lettuce is extra
crispy?”
Though unsure what exactly it was,
Ji Zhijie was certain whatever was in her mouth was not lettuce.
Turning away awkwardly, she discreetly spat out a fingernail-sized piece of eggshell.
Tugging at Ji Zhijie’s sleeve, Shen Juexia complained, “What’s wrong? Why’d you turn away all of a sudden?”
Composing herself, Ji Zhijie clutched the sandwich and straightened up, hesitating before asking, “Shen Juexia… has anyone ever
told you your cooking is good?”
“No, this is my first time making it.” Her almond-shaped eyes sparkled astonishingly as Shen Juexia covered her mouth in disbelief.
“When I was making it, Aunt Liu kept stopping me and advising me not to. Could it be that you think—”
“Maybe you should listen to her and not make it again in the future.” Ji Zhijie placed the eggshell and the remaining sandwich back
into the lunchbox, his expression troubled.
“Is it really that bad?” Pouting, Shen Juexia stared at the neglected sandwich in the lunchbox, twisting her fingers. “Is it truly
that awful? I made so many and specifically picked the best-looking one to bring to you…”
“Well, it’s not that bad.”
“So, it’s good then?” Her eyelashes fluttered as Shen Juexia grabbed Ji Zhijie’s hand hanging by his side, her eyes full of
anticipation. “I didn’t even eat any myself I saved the only good one for you.”
Ji Zhijie glanced at the lunchbox in front of Shen Juexia and casually asked, “Then what’s in yours?”
Without hesitation, Shen Juexia opened her lunchbox and held it up for him to see. “Yours was made by me personally, while mine was
made by Aunt Liu. The ingredients are the same. Could it be you’d rather have hers?”
Though the young mistress’s expression remained unchanged, Ji Zhijie could already picture the little rabbit bristling in
indignation if he chose Aunt Liu’s sandwich.
Raising his arm, Ji Zhijie tried to take the lunchbox from her, intending to tell her there was no need to switch, but no matter
how hard he tugged, he couldn’t get it Shen Juexia was gripping it tightly.
Her fingertips turned white from the force as she maintained a strained smile. “Really? Ji Zhijie, you’re not joking with me, are
you?”
Giving up the struggle, Ji Zhijie shook his head. “No, I just wanted you to put the lunchbox on the table. Holding it like that
might spill it.”
“You scared me…”
The weight in her heart suddenly lifted.
Shen Juexia exhaled in relief.
Turning his head slightly, Ji Zhijie suppressed the urge to smile. “What did you say? I didn’t catch it.”
“Nothing.” Forcing an ingratiating smile, Shen Juexia pointed at the sandwich in front of him. “Let’s eat quickly. Morning self-
study is about to start.”
Letting it go, Ji Zhijie didn’t press further.
He simply picked up the sandwich from the lunchbox again and took small bites.
That had really frightened her…
She thought Ji Zhijie genuinely wanted to switch. The sandwich she made looked terrible, she definitely didn’t want to eat it!
Hmph! Serves him right for being so troublesome.
This sandwich was heaven’s punishment for him~
Contentedly cradling the perfect sandwich in her own lunchbox, Shen Juexia giggled to herself like a cat that got the cream.
Through the window’s reflection, Ji Zhijie secretly admired the young mistress’s expression.
Amber eyes shimmering with faint light, the corners of his lips curled slightly.
This silly desk mate of his…
Sometimes, she was quite adorable.
Gentle sunlight illuminated half the school building.
Rays slipped through the window gaps, softly falling on the girls’ shoulders, casting a warm golden glow on Shen Juexia’s hair and
making Ji Zhijie’s already pale fingertips appear almost translucent.
“Ahhh! Emergency!!!”
A panicked flurry of footsteps shattered the peaceful atmosphere flowing through the classroom.
The two sitting at the back of the room…
They simultaneously raised their heads to look at the newcomer.
