The Villainous Sister-in-law Mistakenly Marked as the Heroine (Transmigration) - Chapter 49.1
Lin Qile and Rong Jing returned home together. As soon as Rong Jing changed her shoes, she headed straight for the study.
Bang!
The sound of the door slamming made Lin Qile, who was still standing in the entryway holding a pair of slippers, flinch.
“Did someone light a fire under her?”
She leisurely changed her shoes, grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge, and took a sip. Glancing at the study, she hesitated for a moment before grabbing a bottle of milk and walking into the kitchen.
Three minutes later, she knocked on the study door, holding a cup of warmed milk.
“Rong Jing, I heated some milk. Do you want some?”
After waiting a few seconds with no response, she patiently explained, “If you don’t get enough calcium, your legs might cramp at night when your belly gets bigger in a few months. Trust me, cramps hurt like hell.”
Still no reaction.
She decided to exaggerate the consequences of not drinking milk properly. “You need a lot of nutrients right now. If the prenatal checkup shows you’re deficient, you’ll have to get injections lots of nutrient shots, right into your arm. Your hand will be full of—”
Creak!
The door opened. Rong Jing frowned. “I want to be alone.”
Lin Qile grinned and nudged the door open further. “Sure, be alone. I won’t say a word. I’ll just stay here and serve you.”
With that, she pulled Rong Jing to the sofa, pressed her down to sit, then lifted her legs to make her recline halfway. Grabbing a pillow, she placed it between Rong Jing’s knees for her to hold.
Finally, she handed her the warm milk.
“There. Now you can drink your milk and have some quiet time. Just call if you need anything.”
She turned to leave the study.
“Come back!”
“Coming!”
She spun around in two steps and leaned in close. “Yes, Your Highness? What are your orders?”
“Sit there. Don’t make a sound.”
“Aye-aye!”
She retreated to a single-seater sofa across the room, propped her chin on her hand, and quietly observed Rong Jing. Rong Jing’s attitude toward Bai Jiao today had been unusually volatile. She wondered what Rong Yihua had said to her.
After pondering for a while without any answers, she gave up and pulled out her phone to pass the time.
Rong Jing stared down at the cup of milk in her hands. It was hot but not scalding, proof of the careful attention paid to heating it.
As far as she could remember, this might have been the first time someone had done something like this for her. Her mother had always been too busy with work, only ever asking about her studies during their rare meetings. Her other mother was constantly occupied with endless social gatherings and beauty treatments.
The nanny once told her that when she was seven months old and needed to start eating solid foods, her mother couldn’t be bothered to mash an apple for her, complaining that her freshly done nails would get ruined.
They had given her the most privileged living conditions, yet not once had they personally prepared even a simple cup of warm milk for her.
She glanced up.
The woman across from her was engrossed in her phone, her expression shifting between excitement, frustration, and deep thought, who knew what she was looking at?
Her mother, Qi Song, was so vile, she had nearly saddled them with crippling debt and even prison time. So why could Lin Qile still be so carefree and cheerful?
“Lin Qile.”
“Huh?”
Quickly pausing whatever she was watching, Lin Qile looked up. “What’s up?”
“Doesn’t what Qi Song did affect you at all? Don’t you hate her?” Why can you still go around laughing all day?
“Of course I hate her! Why wouldn’t I? I’d love nothing more than to see her thrown in jail tomorrow for fifty years. But what’s the point of hating?” She shrugged. “I can’t beat her. No sense in working myself up before she even gets her comeuppance.”
Rong Jing frowned. “That’s just escapism.”
“What’s wrong with the Ah Q spirit? I’m just an ordinary person. Do you think the whole world is full of geniuses like you, making millions by eighteen?”
“How did you know?”
“Read about it in your magazine feature, ‘Prodigy Girl Reveals Stock Market Talent.'”
Seeing Rong Jing narrow her eyes at her, she suddenly felt guilty and began looking around nervously.
Rong Jing leaned closer, the corner of her lips curling into a faint, almost imperceptible smirk. “That article is at least ten years old. It’s hard to find now.”
“Uh…”
She leaned back, trying to put distance between them. “Well, I was just bored and stumbled across it by accident.”
Rong Jing let her off, straightening up and picking up her glass to down the milk in one go.
Finally, she drank it.
Lin Qile breathed a quiet sigh of relief and reached out to take the empty glass. “You should rest for a bit. I won’t disturb you. I’ll call you when dinner’s ready.”
“Don’t you want to know why I need to rest?”
Her eyes lit up. “You’d actually tell me?”
Rong Jing watched her quietly, her deep gaze almost hypnotic.
“I was wrong. I shouldn’t pry. I’ll go cook now.”
Just as she turned away, Rong Jing spoke: “My mother knew about Bai Jiao’s affair a long time ago.”
Crash!
Lin Qile was so shocked that the glass slipped from her hand, shattering on the floor. “She knew all along?!”
“Clumsy.”
Snapping back to reality, she quickly hopped over the broken glass and pushed Rong Jing behind the desk. “Stay here. Don’t move. I’ll clean this up.”
She turned to grab a broom but paused at the door to emphasize, “Don’t come down! There might still be glass shards.”
A moment later, she returned with the broom.
As she carefully swept up the fragments, she couldn’t help but ask, “So your mother just… endured it?”
Her own wife cheating with her best friend Rong Yihua had known all along and never let it show.
Thinking back to the times she’d seen the three of them together, Qi Song’s greetings had always been met with Rong Yihua’s polite responses.
How terrifying!
Just how much could Rong Yihua endure?
“I suspect my mother is hiding something from me.”
“What is it?”
Rong Jing leaned back in the chair, brows furrowed. “If I knew, I wouldn’t be so frustrated.”
Once the glass was cleaned up, Lin Qile walked over and scooped Rong Jing into her arms.
“What are you doing?”
“Stay still,” she chided. “It’s nighttime, and I’m not sure I got all the glass. You’re pregnant, you need to be careful.”
Rong Jing studied the seriousness on her face and gradually stopped resisting, turning her head away with a slight pout. “I’m not that fragile.”
“You don’t have to be strong all the time. What’s wrong with being a little vulnerable sometimes? Have you forgotten you have an alpha like me?”
After carrying Rong Jing back to the bedroom, she planted her hands on her hips. “Alright, rest here. I’ll call you when dinner’s ready.”
Humming a tune, she left the room.
“You don’t have to be strong all the time?”
Rong Jing lay flat on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. “Can I really afford to be vulnerable sometimes?”
In middle school, when she was bullied by alphas at school, she had gone to her mother, only to be told she needed to grow stronger to protect herself. Her other mother had said, “Just don’t provoke those alphas, and you’ll be fine.”
Rong Jing curled up on the bed.
This was the first time someone had ever said such words to her.
An inexplicable emotion surged in her chest, nearly overwhelming her.
…
Early the next morning.
Rong Jing woke up to find the other side of the bed already empty.
She walked out of the bedroom to find a steaming breakfast on the table, but Lin Qile was nowhere to be seen.
Creak!
Hearing movement from the study, she walked over curiously.
Pushing open the study door.
Lin Qile was sitting on the floor, holding tweezers with a piece of glass shard clamped between them. She muttered excitedly to herself, “If I can master an ultrasonic scalpel, finding you with tweezers is nothing.”
The sunlight streaming through the window bathed her face, making the whole world seem to brighten. The gloom in Rong Jing’s heart inexplicably vanished at that moment.
Lin Qile turned her head and saw Rong Jing. “Morning.”
“You’ve been looking for glass shards this early?”
“Yeah, this is your study. You spend most of your time here every day after coming home, except for eating and sleeping. These shards are dangerous.”
She stood up, picking up a small dish on the table containing over a dozen tiny fragments.
“Alright, should be all cleaned up now.”
As she walked past Rong Jing, she couldn’t suppress a yawn.
Rong Jing grabbed her arm. “What time did you get up?”
“Six.”
Rong Jing gazed at her with deep, inscrutable eyes. “Just to clean up?”
“Yep.”
“I always wear shoes in the study. The chance of getting hurt is very low.”
“That’s not good enough!”
Rong Jing was startled by her tone.
“Low chance doesn’t mean no chance. I won’t let you get hurt.”
With a reassuring ‘leave it to me’ smile, she handed the dish to Rong Jing. “Could you put this on the coffee table for me? I need to change, or I’ll be late for the hospital.”
With that, she dashed into the bedroom.
Standing at the study door, Rong Jing ran her fingers over the glass fragments in the dish, the shadows in her eyes gradually melting away.
After breakfast.
Lin Qile first drove Rong Jing to the company before heading to the hospital.
She barely made it to the department on time.
“Well, I remember your place isn’t far from the hospital, and you have a car. How’d you still manage to be late?”
He Yan held a coffee in one hand and a sandwich in the other, looking at her with amusement.
“Morning, Dr. He! The road to Lin Corporation was jammed today. After dropping Rong Jing off and turning back to the hospital, it got even worse. Is there some big event today? The traffic was at a standstill!”
“Commuting to and from work together, huh? Not bad, getting more and more like a proper spouse. I take back what I said about you before.”
After changing, she walked out, made herself a coffee, and sidled up to He Yan. “What did you say about me before?”
“Really want to know?”
He Yan narrowed her eyes with a mysterious smirk.
Lin Qile immediately shook her head. “Never mind!”
She could guess it wasn’t anything flattering.
Heading to her office, she first checked the duty log: “Bed 7 and Bed 9 are recovering well. There was an emergency admission last night.”
He Yan walked over.
“Mm, we’ll do rounds later. Pay attention and learn.”
“Got it!”
Rounds started at eight. Lin Qile followed the doctors attentively, listening and taking notes.
He Yan occasionally glanced back at her, her impression of Lin Qile rapidly improving upon seeing her dedication.
During lunch, she called Rong Jing directly.
“That girl of yours is really something else.”
Rong Jing was reviewing documents while having lunch when she paused her spoon at the question. “What did she do?”
“She’s completely different from the spoiled, arrogant, and incompetent heiress we used to know. All morning, she followed the department head diligently, assisting without a trace of impatience, no matter how difficult the patients were.”
A faint smile appeared on Rong Jing’s face. “She’s serious about being a doctor.”
“If this continues, I think she might actually become a good doctor.”
“Not ‘might.’ She’s already putting in the effort, isn’t she?”
He Yan raised an eyebrow. “Oh-ho-ho, listen to that tone so proud. Have you two completely reconciled? Does that mean you’re getting remarried?”
At this, Rong Jing’s smile faded slightly.
“No.”
“No?”
Rong Jing’s eyes darkened. “Isn’t this arrangement fine as it is?”
If marriage was destined to be about betrayal and infidelity, she’d rather not have it at all.
Lin Qile walked into the hospital cafeteria after finishing her work and spotted He Yan from afar. She grabbed her meal and hurried over. “Dr. He!”
“Done for the day?”
“Yeah.”
The two sat facing each other. He Yan discreetly observed the person across from her. She had indeed held biases against Lin Qile before, but after her friend married Lin Qile, her opinion had gradually shifted.
Working together in the hospital these past few days had completely overturned her previous impressions.
She felt that her friend and Lin Qile were a perfect match!
Rong Jing was burdened with deep thoughts and pride traits uncommon for an omega, making it hard for most alphas to appreciate her.
Lin Qile, on the other hand, was the complete opposite. She was always cheerful, facing even the biggest challenges with optimism.
These two weren’t just compatible in terms of pheromones their personalities complemented each other perfectly.
Lin Qile was eating when she suddenly felt an intense gaze fixed on her. She looked up and met He Yan’s scrutinizing eyes, startling her into leaning back. “Wh-what are you doing?”
“What are your thoughts about you and Rong Jing?”
Since her friend wasn’t making a move, she had to step in.
Lin Qile was quite popular in the hospital now, not just with Wu Xue, but He Yan had also noticed several nurses being particularly warm toward her.
She couldn’t let her friend’s home life fall apart!
“Me and Rong Jing? What do you mean?”
Lin Qile looked utterly confused.
“You have a child together. Aren’t you getting remarried?”
At this, Lin Qile shot her a resentful look. “If you hadn’t helped her hide the pregnancy, I wouldn’t have divorced her so easily!”
