The Villainous Sister-in-law Mistakenly Marked as the Heroine (Transmigration) - Chapter 46.1
The moment the words left her lips, Rong Jing almost immediately halted in her tracks.
But she didn’t turn around. She simply stood there, her back rigid, as if she might walk away resolutely at any second.
He Yan, who had been watching the drama unfold, walked over and nudged Lin Qile’s shoulder. “There are still twenty minutes left. Hurry up and get over here. I’m leaving first.”
With that, she stepped past both Lin Qile and Rong Jing. As she passed Rong Jing, she couldn’t resist muttering under her breath, “Wow, what a strong smell of vinegar!”
“Get lost!”
Rong Jing stiffened, the word practically gritted out between her teeth.
He Yan chuckled softly, pretending not to hear, and strode away. Lin Qile, who had just caught up, happened to hear that venomous “get lost” and froze mid-step.
“Uh, I just have a few things to say. Once I’m done, I’ll get lost!”
Idiot!
Who in their right mind would rush to get scolded? Rong Jing’s expression darkened further.
Afraid that Rong Jing might lose her temper and walk away, Lin Qile hurried forward and grabbed her arm. Rong Jing’s cold gaze slowly dropped to the hand gripping her, her voice low and dangerous. “Which hand did you use to pass that woman a tissue just now?”
Huh?
Lin Qile was stunned, momentarily unable to process the question.
“I asked, which hand did you use to give that woman a tissue?”
Her tone was laced with impatience. Still bewildered, Lin Qile instinctively raised the hand that wasn’t holding Rong Jing and answered meekly, “This one. Why?”
Only then did the disdain in Rong Jing’s eyes ease slightly. She shifted the topic. “What did you want to say?”
“There are fewer people over there. Let’s talk there.”
Seeing Rong Jing’s expression soften, Lin Qile mustered her courage and tugged her arm toward the less crowded area. Tentatively, she asked, “So… Qi Song is about to marry Ji Qian. What are you planning to do?”
“What do you mean, what am I planning to do?”
Her tone was indifferent.
Lin Qile’s eyes widened in disbelief. She’s this calm about it?
Had the big villain suddenly changed her nature? Given her vengeful personality, was she really just going to let Qi Song off the hook and move on?
No way! That didn’t sound like Rong Jing at all.
“So… you’re not planning to retaliate against Qi Song anymore?”
Rong Jing arched an eyebrow. “What, are you planning to turn righteous and help me deal with your scumbag of a mother?”
“No, no! I’m staying out of this!” Lin Qile quickly waved her hands.
She hesitated, looking as though she had something difficult to say.
Rong Jing grew irritated. “Spit it out. Don’t waste my time.”
“It’s just… you should probably keep an eye on your mom. After all, she and Qi Song were… you know…” Lin Qile hunched her shoulders, trying to phrase her warning as delicately as possible. “I mean, if Qi Song manipulates her into doing something harmful to your mother, it wouldn’t be good.”
Rong Jing’s face instantly darkened. She abruptly tightened her grip on Lin Qile’s hand and demanded sharply, “Do you know something?”
Lin Qile looked conflicted, unsure whether she should reveal the truth.
After all, in the original novel’s plot she had seen, Rong Jing’s mother, Rong Yihua, was killed by Bai Jiao and Qi Song working together and the timeline was approaching fast. It was after learning the truth that Rong Jing completely snapped, resorting to any means necessary for revenge, ultimately leading to her own destruction.
If she told Rong Jing everything now, could she really prevent Rong Jing’s descent into darkness? But if she didn’t, and something really happened to Rong Jing’s mother later, how could she ever face Rong Jing knowing she had kept it all a secret?
“Lin Qile, speak!”
Rong Jing’s expression grew even more severe as she tightened her grip on Lin Qile’s arm.
Seeing Rong Jing’s anxious expression, Lin Qile gritted her teeth and blurted out, “You might not believe this, but actually, I’m not from this…” Before she could utter the word “world,” a sharp pain exploded in her head and radiated through her limbs, so intense that she nearly collapsed to her knees.
It was Rong Jing beside her who steadied her, a fleeting look of concern crossing her face. “What’s wrong with you?”
Lin Qile shook her head, her face pale, but found herself completely unable to speak.
The mechanical voice of the system rang out: [Warning! Disclosure of unauthorized information is prohibited. Further violations will result in elimination.]
The excruciating pain made Lin Qile’s vision darken. She closed her eyes and cursed inwardly. “Useless system! Can’t even help, and now you dare to electrocute me?”
[Host, this isn’t my fault! It’s the protocol. You can’t reveal your true identity.]
What an unfair contract!
But there was nothing she could do her life was in someone else’s hands. She had no choice but to submit.
Ever adaptable, Lin Qile quickly adjusted her mindset and suppressed her anger. “So as long as I don’t expose my identity, I’m fine, right? Damn it, spell it out clearly this time, don’t screw me over!”
The system replied, “The elimination directive is triggered solely by identity exposure.”
“Fine, got it.”
As the pain gradually subsided, Lin Qile forced her eyes open and steadied her breathing. She found Rong Jing half-supporting her, her expression tense with worry.
Testing her voice, Lin Qile called out, “Rong Jing?”
“Lin Qile?”
Seeing her awake, Rong Jing quickly masked her concern, her face cooling back into its usual aloofness. Yet her tone carried an unyielding, almost protective edge. “And you call yourself a doctor? If you don’t even care about your own health, who would dare come to you for treatment? Go get a full check-up.”
“It’s nothing, just a bit dizzy. I’ll be fine after resting.”
Rong Jing studied her for a moment, her gaze sharpening. “What did you mean earlier?”
With the system’s warning fresh in her mind, Lin Qile knew better than to repeat her mistake. Her thoughts raced as she tried to figure out how to explain without raising suspicion.
But their long acquaintance had made Rong Jing adept at reading her. Noticing the flicker in Lin Qile’s eyes, Rong Jing smirked coldly, then suddenly gripped her neck and pinned her against the wall, her voice low and threatening. “Be a good girl and tell me the truth. No tricks.”
“I wouldn’t dare!” Lin Qile forced a nervous laugh. “It’s just… I overheard Qi Song talking to your mom on the phone, mentioning some medicine she’s giving your mother. Qi Song’s cunning and deceitful, so I thought I should warn you to be careful.”
She delivered the message cautiously, watching Rong Jing’s reaction.
To her relief, Rong Jing didn’t immediately lose control though her expression frosted over, radiating an icy detachment that warned others to stay away.
Lin Qile couldn’t help but offer comfort. “We caught it early. Aunt Rong will be okay.”
“Hmm.”
Rong Jing responded flatly, avoiding Lin Qile’s gaze. “It’s getting late. You should go back to work.”
The dismissal was a bad sign, Rong Jing clearly wasn’t open to further discussion.
But under the circumstances, who could blame her? Lin Qile sighed helplessly and turned to head back to her department.
Fortunately, He Yan was completely professional during work hours, not mocking her about the incident again. She was also very forthcoming with professional knowledge, which greatly relieved Lin Qile.
As they spent more time together, He Yan was genuinely surprised: “I see your foundation isn’t bad at all. How on earth did you manage to fail every subject in school?”
Ah, how to explain this?
Lin Qile helplessly waved her hand and could only put on a regretful expression, saying, “It was all because I was young and foolish. Don’t worry, Dr. He, I’ll study hard and won’t cause you any trouble.”
For this humble and sensible remark, He Yan, who had always disliked her, finally gave her a slightly better look. Patting her shoulder with an air of “you’re teachable,” she then proceeded to ruthlessly exploit her.
At this point, Lin Qile was still basking in the joy of gaining He Yan’s approval, completely unaware of the treacherous nature of human hearts.
All in all, despite the twists and turns, Lin Qile managed to make it to the end of her shift. As soon as she got home, the aroma of food greeted her nothing could be more blissful.
Seeing her daughter, Lin Xinrou immediately rushed over with concern: “Sweetheart, you must be exhausted! Come eat!”
Lin Qile was indeed very tired that day and just wanted to eat, take a shower, and go straight to bed.
As mother and daughter ate, they chatted idly.
“Sweetheart, how was your first day as a doctor? If you ran into any problems, tell me. We don’t have to work in such a demanding department, Mom would feel terrible for you.”
Her mother’s pampered nature was never going to change in this lifetime!
Naïve and sheltered, she’d never become a strong, independent woman. Lin Qile could only hope she wouldn’t fall back into her love-struck ways.
Suppressing all her exhaustion, Lin Qile opted to share only the good news: “Mom, don’t worry about me. The hospital director was Grandfather’s student and has been very kind to me.”
“That’s good. Mom feels much better now.”
Lin Xinrou kept urging Lin Qile to eat more, but as she ate, her mind wandered anxiously.
She wasn’t sure if Lin Xinrou had truly moved on from Qi Song’s marriage, but she didn’t dare bring it up now, afraid of triggering her mother’s emotions again.
She couldn’t help but think of Rong Jing again.
Surrounded by emotionally fragile and unpredictable people, how exhausting!
Lin Qile silently covered her face.
After dinner and a shower, she curled up in her soft bed, exhaling deeply as she prepared to sleep. Tomorrow would be another hopeful day…
Ring ring ring!
Assuming nothing troublesome happened.
But reality had a way of throwing curveballs when least expected.
Looking at the incessantly ringing phone, the caller ID flashed: Unreasonable Little Princess.
After the divorce, she had changed Rong Jing’s contact name back to this.
Lin Qile rubbed her face and answered the call, but before she could even speak, a voice as eerie and gloomy as snow in June came through.
“Lin Qile, get to my house in twenty minutes. I have something to discuss with you.”
“But, ”
Click. The call ended before she could finish.
What kind of nonsense was this?!
Lin Qile irritably grabbed her hair, feeling utterly exasperated.
To go or not to go? It was practically a life-or-death question, did she even dare refuse?
Resigned, she threw on some clothes, grabbed her car keys, and drove straight to their former marital home.
The entire way, she frantically speculated about what could have possibly prompted the Unreasonable Little Princess to summon her in the middle of the night.
Most likely, it had something to do with what she’d mentioned earlier that day.
I just wonder how Rong Jing is doing now?
Under the dim glow of the bedside lamp, Rong Jing sat on the edge of the bed, clutching a test report tightly in her hand. Her fingertips nearly pierced through the thick paper, her face pale and her eyes chillingly cold.
She remained slightly hunched, motionless.
