The Villainous Sister-in-law Mistakenly Marked as the Heroine (Transmigration) - Chapter 16
The next day.
Lin Qile arrived at the company building with full confidence. She had spent the entire night finally getting a grasp on one of the projects.
As soon as she entered the building, she noticed people casting disdainful glances at her. When she looked back, they immediately averted their eyes.
The entire morning, she was swamped with work, yet she couldn’t shake the feeling of being surrounded by hostile gazes some filled with contempt, anger, and even hatred.
She racked her brain, wondering if she had done anything outrageous recently.
At lunchtime, she caught Chen Nan, who had sneaked off to the employee cafeteria ahead of her. “Sister Chen, what’s going on?”
Normally, Chen Nan would invite her to eat together, but today she had deliberately avoided her. Something was definitely off.
“Xiao Lin, what do you mean?”
“What happened that even you have to avoid me?”
“N-nothing!”
Chen Nan forced an awkward smile, her eyes darting around nervously.
Lin Qile crossed her arms and shrugged. “Fine, if you won’t tell me.”
She turned to leave.
“Xiao Lin!”
Chen Nan called out to stop her.
She paused.
After hesitating for a few seconds, Chen Nan pulled her into a corner and showed her something on her phone. “An anonymous post was made on the company forum today.”
The title read: Money Can Tear Apart True Love Exposing the Worst Things Capitalist Heiress Lin Qile Has Done.
She clicked on it.
The moment she saw the content, her jaw dropped.
The Ten Sins of Lin Qile!
The post painted Rong Wanning as merely an adopted daughter of the Rong family, who had lived cautiously under their roof since childhood. After years of hard work in the entertainment industry, she had finally become independent only to be forced into an arranged marriage under Lin Qile’s tyranny, cruelly separating her from her true love, Ji Zhao.
Rong Wanning, unyielding to power, had bravely resisted oppression in public, defending her love at the risk of being blacklisted.
Lin Qile was dumbfounded.
This was a complete whitewashing of Rong Wanning’s affair with Ji Zhao during her engagement, turning it into some tragic love story like The Butterfly Lovers while she was cast as the villainous Ma Wencai, tearing lovers apart!
“Everyone’s avoiding me because of this?”
“It’s not just this post anymore. Check the internet, Xiao Lin. I’m just an employee, I really don’t want to get involved in trouble.”
“Fine.”
After parting ways with Chen Nan, she grabbed her food and sat in a secluded corner, pulling out her phone. To her shock, her photo was plastered across the entertainment news headlines!
In the picture, she wore a haughty expression while staring at Ji Zhao, with a smaller inset showing Ji Zhao carrying his belongings as he dejectedly left the company.
The headline read: Lin Family Heiress, Spurned in Love, Uses Privilege to Expel Rival.
The comments section was in an uproar.
[I hate these spoiled rich girls the most! Just because they have money, they think the whole world should worship them!]
[Lin Qile isn’t worthy of our Wanning! Wanning worked her way up step by step, how could a useless heiress like her ever compare?]
[Support Rong Wanning! Love should be free!]
[Lin Qile bullied classmates in school. If someone like her married Wanning, wouldn’t she turn abusive? I still support Ji Zhao he may not be rich, but he graduated from a top university and has brains. He’s a rising star! Rumor has it Lin Qile only got into medical school because her family paid for it. She never even took exams. Would you trust someone like her with your life?]
[How can anyone joke about lives? I’d rather die than let her treat me!]
[Support Rong Wanning and Ji Zhao! Lin Qile is disgusting get lost already!]
After flipping through several pages of comments, all uniformly criticizing her, Lin Qile would have thought Rong Wanning was the victim if she weren’t the one involved.
Lin Qile tightened her grip on the chopsticks. “The original owner was indeed no saint, but seeing how she’s whitewashing herself like this, I suddenly feel Rong Wanning is even worse!”
[Host, the entire internet is bashing you now. There are many reporters downstairs wanting to interview you, and Rong Wanning’s fans have formed an anti-you protest group with banners displayed below.]
“I—”
Just as she stood up, her phone rang.
Caller ID: Xu Jiao.
Lin Qile froze for a second, quickly searching her memories for information about this person.
Xu Jiao, the original owner’s childhood friend who went abroad for high school. A feisty beta who was often called the original owner’s lackey during school days. However, judging by the original owner’s memories, Xu Jiao didn’t befriend her because of her alpha status or family background.
Answering the call, before she could speak, the other party launched into rapid-fire questions, “Qile, how did you end up on the entertainment headlines? The whole internet is bashing you! Last time we talked, didn’t you say Rong Wanning only met Ji Zhao after getting engaged to you? Now it’s being spun as you forcing them to break up when they were already in love?”
“You’re back in the country?”
“Yeah, just landed. Come pick me up, I brought you something nice.”
“Alright.”
Hanging up, Lin Qile peeked at the scene downstairs. “System, can you help me leave the company undetected?”
[Of course.]
“Then I’m counting on you.”
Ten minutes later.
A car drove out of the underground garage. The paparazzi squatting roadside saw it but completely failed to recognize it as Lin Qile’s vehicle.
Once on the main road, Lin Qile smiled. “System, it seems you have many more capabilities. I underestimated you before.”
[Naturally.]
Arriving at the airport, she spotted a fashionably dressed short-haired girl from afar nose pierced, chewing gum, with a suitcase at her feet while scrolling through her phone.
“That’s Xu Jiao, right?”
[Yes.]
Pulling up and rolling down the window, Lin Qile called out, “Get in!”
Xu Jiao looked up, her face lighting up at the sight. She hurried over and leaned in. “Wow, that was fast! I thought you’d been grounded at home.”
“Get in first. My current situation makes airports risky.”
“Got it.”
After stowing her luggage, Xu Jiao hopped into the passenger seat.
As they drove away from the airport, Xu Jiao kept browsing news on her phone, shaking her head intermittently. “These reports are getting more absurd. They even dug up that incident where we made He Yu kneel in the bathroom during high school. Tsk tsk, someone’s definitely pulling strings behind this!”
Lin Qile frowned slightly while driving.
She’d known since occupying this body that the original owner wasn’t a good person, but she never thought her actions warranted such universal hatred.
Yet hearing Xu Jiao casually mention their high school bullying made her uncomfortable.
All the original owner’s misdeeds were now hers to bear.
“Xu Jiao, compile a list of everyone we bullied in high school.”
Xu Jiao looked up. “Why?”
“To apologize and make amends.”
“Huh?”
Lin Qile gazed ahead with utmost seriousness. “When you do something wrong, you should face the consequences. When we were young and didn’t know better, we could treat it as a joke. But we’re adults now, I don’t want to make excuses anymore.”
Xu Jiao gave her a strange look before finally speaking. “Are you drunk in broad daylight?” She even leaned in to sniff.
“Stop joking, I’m serious.”
Xu Jiao straightened up and shrugged. “Alright, alright. But we didn’t really do anything wrong. If those people hadn’t been jealous of you and stolen your things, would we have needed to teach them a lesson?”
“Never mind all that. Just make the arrangements.”
“Fine, whatever you say, Miss Lin.”
The next day.
While Lin Qile was busy drafting a proposal, Xu Jiao called. “Are you home?”
“Yeah.”
“I’m coming over. Let’s go to East Fourth Road.”
“Why?”
Xu Jiao rolled her eyes. “Wasn’t it you, Miss High-and-Mighty, who wanted to apologize for what you did in high school? I found out where He Yu is.”
“So fast?”
“Did you forget what my family does?”
Xu Jiao’s family ran a private investigation business technically illegal in the country, but the fact that the Xus had made a fortune from it showed just how well their business was doing.
“Alright, let’s meet up.”
After setting a location, she hung up and changed to go out.
Just as she stepped out, Rong Jing called. Answering while walking to her car, she said, “Good morning, Miss Rong.”
“Come see me.”
Rong Jing’s voice sounded off not like she was in heat, but more angry and somewhat lost.
Carefully, Lin Qile asked, “Are you in heat?”
“No!”
“Then I probably can’t. I already made plans with a friend.”
Rong Jing’s voice grew impatient. “Are you coming or not?!”
“What’s going on? I really have plans.”
“Forget it.”
Rong Jing hung up abruptly.
Lin Qile stared at her phone, baffled. “What’s gotten into her now?”
