- The Villainous Female Side Character Pretends to Be an Omega in the Apocalypse and Raises a Cat
- Chapter 40 - Gene Serum
Qiu Yi and the others returned together.
They stood by the vehicle, shoving each other hesitantly, unable to decide who should open the door.
They couldn’t quite articulate what they were afraid of, it wasn’t as if Chi Yingdong would actually devour them.
Yet, an inexplicable sixth sense made their feet feel as heavy as lead, rooting them in place.
“Move aside, I’ll do it.”
Luo Zhiyin gritted her teeth and stepped forward, yanking the car door open with a forceful pull.
But the moment the door swung open, she froze stiffly in place.
Qiu Yi and Han Li exchanged a glance before curiously leaning in to look.
Inside, Chi Yingdong cradled a soft, fluffy calico kitten in her arms, its breathing shallow and steady as it slept peacefully.
Shifting their gaze to the right, they saw the clothes Meng Qinghe had worn that morning strewn haphazardly across the passenger seat.
Each of the three women harbored their own thoughts, their eyes turbulent with unspoken emotions, yet none dared to speak first.
In the end, it was Han Li, with her greater experience, who steadied her nerves first and murmured, changing the subject, “There were quite a few zombies in the factory, but thankfully, they were all low-level and not too hard to handle.”
Chi Yingdong gave a faint nod. Right in front of them, she lightly tapped the clothes on the passenger seat, storing them away in her spatial storage, then retrieved a soft, plush cat bed and placed it on the seat.
Who in the apocalypse would specifically keep a cat bed in their spatial storage?
At that moment, certain vague suspicions quietly solidified into certainty.
As Chi Yingdong gently settled the kitten into the bed, her careful and reverent demeanor made it clear to everyone present:
Some things must remain buried in their hearts forever.
Suddenly separated from the familiar warmth and embrace, Meng Qinghe curled into a small, uneasy ball on the seat, her sleep visibly restless.
“Let’s go.”
Chi Yingdong pushed the door open and stepped out of the car, a hint of urgency hidden in her eyes.
The sooner she finished her tasks, the sooner she could return to her little cat.
Meng Qinghe drifted in and out of fragmented dreams, images swirling through her mind like a revolving lantern.
Chi Yingdong’s soft, adorable features, yet with a cold, detached profile; the gentle figure of the ant queen… and finally, the little black snake they had captured at the zoo.
Hiss, hiss, hiss…
The sound of a snake’s tongue flickering seemed to echo right beside her ear.
After what felt like an eternity, Meng Qinghe groggily opened her eyes, a faint, stinging pain pulsing from her ankle.
She looked down and saw blood soaking the surrounding white fur, a pitiful and disheveled sight.
And right beside the wound, coiled a small, pitch-black snake, identical to the one from her dream.
Meng Qinghe: !!!
How did it get here?!
She remembered clearly: after they brought the little black snake back from the zoo, it had remained coiled in a corner, motionless, not even flicking its tongue once.
They had speculated whether Chi Yingdong’s ice barrier was too cold, making the snake mistake the season for winter and enter hibernation early.
Even after Chi Yingdong removed the ice barrier, the little black snake remained unresponsive, like a dead snake.
Who would have thought it had secretly followed them and slipped into the car?!
Meng Qinghe sprang to her feet, her tail shooting straight up, fur bristling as she stared warily at the little black snake.
“Meow, meow, meow?”
How did you get here?
Sensing the movement, the little black snake slowly raised its round little head, its beady black eyes fixed intently on the calico kitten, its tongue flickering rapidly.
“Hiss, hiss!”
Don’t overthink it. I didn’t follow you here. The woman from the zoo has come too.
Meng Qinghe’s cat eyes narrowed into vertical slits as she regarded the little black snake with suspicion.
“Meow, meow, meow.”
“Why are you telling me this?”
Meng Qinghe didn’t trust the snake, knowing it was too cunning to share information without reason.
The little black snake raised its head, gazing intently at Meng Qinghe for a moment.
“Sss.”
It’s for the gene serum. Share some with me when you get it.
Recognizing the stubbornness in Meng Qinghe’s eyes, the snake knew it had to be honest and finally revealed its true motive.
So the original female lead had followed them here too.
Was everything destined to belong only to the original female lead?
Resentment swelled in Meng Qinghe’s heart. She immediately glanced around, but trapped inside the car, she had no way to relay this crucial information to Chi Yingdong!
“Meow!”
Frustrated, she lightly scratched the car door with her paw, her eyes filled with anxiety.
The little black snake, however, remained calm. It extended its slender tail, deftly wriggling into the storage compartment beneath the car door and fiddling around.
With a soft “click,” the car door slowly cracked open.
Meng Qinghe stared in surprise. Since turning into a cat, her thoughts often lagged, she had completely forgotten about the emergency escape button!
She immediately slipped through the gap and, without hesitation, twitched her nose rapidly.
Catching the crisp, cold scent of Chi Yingdong, she swiftly followed the trail.
The little black snake trailed closely behind, its body gliding over the ground, leaving a faint mark.
Along the way, zombie corpses lay scattered everywhere, each with wounds precisely at the forehead or neck, clear evidence of instant kills.
The absence of excessive splattered blood highlighted the attacker’s efficiency and strength.
As Chi Yingdong’s scent grew stronger, Meng Qinghe quickened her pace.
Finally, she halted before a door at the end of the corridor.
Familiar voices echoed from inside, it was Chi Yingdong!
She immediately nudged the door with her head, emitting urgent meows while scratching the door panel with her paws.
The voices inside abruptly ceased. The next second, the door was yanked open.
Chi Yingdong’s eyes first flickered with surprise at the sight of the calico cat, then softened with warmth.
She extended her hand, allowing the kitten to leap into her palm.
But when her gaze fell upon the bloodstain on the kitten’s ankle, her expression darkened.
Gently parting the blood-matted fur around the tiny bite marks, her brow furrowed deeply.
The little black snake, leisurely catching up, had no time to flick its tongue before an ice blade thrown by Chi Yingdong grazed its skin.
“Sss…”
The wound was small, but the chilling pain was sharp as needles, forcing a hiss of pain.
“Meow! Meow, meow, meow!”
Meng Qinghe urgently patted Chi Yingdong with her paw pads, stopping her from further attacking the snake.
Seeing the calico’s desperate intervention, Chi Yingdong retracted her ability and retrieved iodine and gauze from her spatial storage.
The little black snake flicked its tail in displeasure but watched intently as Chi Yingdong carefully cleaned the kitten’s wound.
Fine, a noble snake doesn’t hold grudges against petty humans.
After tending to the kitten’s injury, the tension around Chi Yingdong gradually eased.
Qiu Yi and the others mustered the courage to approach, gazing delightedly at the little calico.
No one could resist an adorable kitten, especially such a beautiful calico.
But knowing this kitten was Meng Qinghe, no one dared to pet her.
Meng Qinghe rubbed against Chi Yingdong’s wrist and let out a few calls toward the outside of the building, attempting to convey a message.
The tacit understanding cultivated over these days allowed Chi Yingdong to immediately understand what Meng Qinghe meant.
Chi Yingdong crouched down, gently stroking the little calico cat’s head. His voice held a tenderness few could imagine, yet upon closer listening, it carried a weight of seriousness. “Has someone followed us here?”
Meng Qinghe wasn’t sure if Ye Rourou had arrived yet, but what she wanted to convey was similar to what Chi Yingdong had said, so she nodded in agreement.
At that moment, the little black snake slithered over and flicked its tongue at Chi Yingdong.
“Hiss, hiss.”
Chi Yingdong couldn’t understand what the little black snake was saying. With a quick glance, he picked up the kitten and headed inside.
As for the content of their communication, Chi Yingdong had no intention of telling Luo Zhiyin and the others, to avoid causing unnecessary tension during their next actions.
