- Chapter 34 - I Said, I Want You to Take Responsibility for Me
Chi Yingdong’s eyes darkened, and she let out a cold snort.
“Adults helping each other fulfill physical needs?”
She had thought the little one was shy and had avoided bringing up the matter.
Never did she expect the other party to put on such a “seasoned” front.
What an eye-opener!
Meng Qinghe gave a dry laugh. “Isn’t that so? Don’t tell me you want me to take responsibility?”
To her surprise, Chi Yingdong replied, “Mm. Yes!”
Meng Qinghe wondered if her ears were playing tricks on her, how could she be hearing things?
But she didn’t dare to confirm it with Chi Yingdong.
“I… I’m going to bed!”
She practically fled in panic, even losing one of her slippers in the process.
But she didn’t dare to go back for it, running upstairs with one bare foot.
Chi Yingdong watched Meng Qinghe’s flustered retreat with amusement, picked up the slipper, and chuckled softly.
Second-floor corridor.
Meng Qinghe stood frozen in front of the door adorned with a Hello Kitty sticker.
She reached out to push the door open but hesitated, withdrawing her hand and glancing toward the staircase.
What if she hadn’t misheard?
If she ran away like this, would she miss out on what she had been hoping for?
Just then, Chi Yingdong reached the top step, swinging the slipper in her hand.
“Why aren’t you going in?”
She asked knowingly.
Meng Qinghe pursed her lips and stretched out her hand. “Give me back my slipper.”
Chi Yingdong stood still. “Come and get it yourself.”
The distance between them was barely two meters. Meng Qinghe strode forward and reached for the slipper.
Just as her fingertips were about to touch it, Chi Yingdong suddenly pulled her hand back, hiding the slipper behind her.
Meng Qinghe: ???
“What do you mean?”
Chi Yingdong’s lips curved slightly, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
She kept the slipper behind her back and took a slow, deliberate step forward.
Chi Yingdong enunciated clearly, “I said, I want you to take responsibility for me.”
Meng Qinghe’s heartbeat instantly went haywire.
“Res-responsibility for what?”
Her voice grew softer, her eyelashes fluttering nervously. “We clearly didn’t do anything.”
Chi Yingdong suddenly leaned in, her warm breath brushing against Meng Qinghe’s earlobe.
“So you’re saying we should do something now, to make your responsibility justified?”
Meng Qinghe gasped, her entire face turning as red as a boiled shrimp.
She flusteredly pressed a hand against Chi Yingdong’s shoulder. “Don’t get so close!”
Chi Yingdong let out a low laugh and gently set the slipper on the floor.
“OK, whatever you say. But I’ll only give you three seconds to decide.”
She held up three fingers with her right hand. “Will you be a responsible adult, or…?”
Meng Qinghe wanted to ask what the other option was.
But Chi Yingdong had already started the countdown.
“Three.”
Meng Qinghe nervously swallowed.
“Two.”
Her fingers unconsciously tightened on the hem of her clothes.
Chi Yingdong’s eyes darkened as she slowly leaned closer. “One.”
“I’ll take responsibility!”
Meng Qinghe shouted with her eyes squeezed shut.
Then, she cautiously cracked them open to peek at the other’s expression and added in a small voice, “But we have to take it slow.”
Chi Yingdong was taken aback.
She had prepared herself for rejection, never expecting to hear such a reply.
As for taking it slow, Chi Yingdong didn’t mind at all.
She had plenty of patience.
Chi Yingdong gently pinched Meng Qinghe’s cheek. “Fine.”
Then she reminded her, “Put your slipper on.”
Meng Qinghe gazed into the tender smile in Chi Yingdong’s eyes, and her heart beat even faster.
She scrambled to put on her slippers, only to hear Chi Yingdong add, “Since you’ve decided to take responsibility, there’s no need for two rooms anymore.”
“From now on, we’ll sleep together. I can also supervise you to correct your sleeping posture.”
“Ah?” Meng Qinghe exclaimed in surprise, “That really isn’t necessary.”
Chi Yingdong looked serious and spoke with conviction, “It is necessary. You’re taking responsibility for me, and I should do the same for you. Understand, Little Kitten Meng?”
Nothing inappropriate happened that night.
Initially, Meng Qinghe had trouble adjusting to the new environment and felt restless in an unfamiliar bed, but with Chi Yingdong by her side, she ended up sleeping soundly through the night.
…
The next day.
As soon as Chi Yingdong woke up, the first thing she did was turn to look at the girl beside her.
A sense of contentment welled up in her heart.
It was far more satisfying than waking up to find a kitten by her side.
She had plans for the day.
First, head to the mission hall to see what tasks were available and get a better understanding of the situation in Shanghai. Then, she would focus on building her relationship with Meng Qinghe.
When Meng Qinghe heard Chi Yingdong mention going to the mission hall, she rolled out of bed in an instant. “I want to go too!”
Having just awakened her abilities, she was eager to prove her usefulness.
Chi Yingdong’s gaze lingered for a moment on Meng Qinghe’s fair shoulders before she discreetly adjusted her shoulder strap. “Trying to show off right after awakening your abilities?”
“I’m not showing off.”
Meng Qinghe pouted in dissatisfaction. She wasn’t the type to overestimate herself.
Chi Yingdong smiled and asked, “Then what is it?”
Meng Qinghe’s eyes were resolute as she clenched her fist in determination. “I will be your most trusted right-hand woman!”
“I don’t need a right-hand woman…”
Before Chi Yingdong could finish her sentence, Meng Qinghe had already jumped out of bed and was rummaging through the closet barefoot.
Half an hour later.
Just as they were about to leave, someone knocked on the door.
The two exchanged a glance, puzzled by the unexpected visitor.
Chi Yingdong opened the door to find a woman in her early thirties standing outside.
She wore a simple, sharp gray suit, paired with a neat, short haircut.
Behind her stood two armed guards. Her presence was commanding yet approachable.
“Miss Chi, Miss Meng.”
The woman smiled and extended her hand. “I am Chen Junyun, the head of the Shanghai Base.”
Chi Yingdong shook her hand briefly, keenly noticing the calluses on the woman’s hand, a sign of someone who had handled firearms for years.
She responded politely, “For the base leader to visit in person, it must be something important?”
Chen Junyun’s expression turned apologetic, though she spoke half-jokingly.
“I heard about your arrival at the base last night and wanted to visit then. But I thought you might need some time to settle in, so I postponed. I hope you don’t feel neglected.”
Chi Yingdong smiled. “Of course not.”
“I’ve heard that Miss Chi is a third-level ability user. The Shanghai Base is honored to have you join us.”
As she spoke, Chen Junyun’s gaze subtly shifted between Chi Yingdong and Meng Qinghe.
Meng Qinghe quietly moved closer to Chi Yingdong.
Though the base leader wore a smile, her eyes were too sharp, as if they could see right through a person.
Chen Junyun’s gaze eventually settled back on Chi Yingdong, waiting for her response.
However, after a moment of silence without any acknowledgment from Chi Yingdong, her expression grew somewhat troubled.
She had already formed a preliminary impression of Chi Yingdong.
Deciding not to beat around the bush any longer, her tone became more sincere and serious.
“Our base is currently facing some dangers. I hope you can join us in resisting the external threats.”
Chi Yingdong raised an eyebrow slightly.
The identity of a third-level ability user would indeed attract the attention of the base’s higher-ups.
But those in high positions value face the most. For them to come looking so quickly, it seems this external threat is quite troublesome.
Chi Yingdong didn’t respond immediately. Instead, she turned her head to glance at Meng Qinghe beside her.
Meng Qinghe blinked and subtly squeezed her fingers, signaling her to make her own decision.
“Base Leader Chen, you’re too kind.”
Chi Yingdong withdrew her gaze, her tone calm. “What kind of danger are we talking about?”
Chen Junyun’s expression grew more serious. “Recently, mutated animals have been launching sneak attacks from the north of the base.”
As she spoke, Chen Junyun observed Chi Yingdong’s expression.
“The number of mutated animals in each attack isn’t large, but they strike intermittently, making everyone uneasy. Moreover, they retreat immediately after each attack, showing a high level of organization. I suspect someone is controlling them from behind the scenes.”
“Mutated animals?” Meng Qinghe couldn’t help but speak up. “What kinds of mutated animals?”
Chen Junyun frowned. “There are too many varieties, some we’re familiar with, others we’ve never seen before.”
She slowly revealed the details. “There’s a zoo to the north. We suspect the animals there have mutated.”
“And… many of the mutated animals that attack are natural predators and prey in the food chain, but now they’re working together to assault the base. That’s the most suspicious part to me.”
Chi Yingdong pondered thoughtfully. “So, you need me to investigate whether someone is behind this?”
“Yes. If you’re willing, the base will reward you with 1,000 points.”
One point could be exchanged for one steamed bun, so 1,000 points was not a small amount.
Moreover, the task only required investigation, not combat.
Chi Yingdong felt a stir of interest, but she was no longer a lone wolf and needed to discuss it with Meng Qinghe.
Chen Junyun sighed, her expression heavy.
“Our base currently has no third-level ability users. Most of the few second-level ability users have been sent to the city’s grain storage to collect supplies, and the remaining few have other assignments. Chen Junyun sincerely hoped Chi Yingdong would help resolve this tricky issue and laid out the base’s current situation honestly.
Chi Yingdong thought for a moment. “I can take on this mission, but I have a condition.”
“Please, go ahead.”
Chen Junyun responded immediately.
“I need the base to provide all the research data they have on mutated animals, and…”
Chi Yingdong took Meng Qinghe’s hand. “I want a suitable set of equipment for my wife.”
She hadn’t anticipated that her little cat would turn into a human, so she hadn’t prepared soft armor or the like.
Now that the little cat had become human, she didn’t want to be a clinging vine.
The little cat needed time to grow, and what Chi Yingdong had to do was provide her with the best possible environment for that growth.
Meng Qinghe looked at Chi Yingdong in surprise.
Chen Junyun’s gaze lingered on their clasped hands for a moment before she readily agreed, “No problem. You can make any requests you need, the base will fully support you.”
“How many people do you need? I can arrange them for you.”
Chi Yingdong declined Chen Junyun’s offer. “That won’t be necessary.”
After seeing Chen Junyun off, Meng Qinghe immediately asked, “Are you taking me with you?”
Chi Yingdong countered, “Don’t you want to go?”
Meng Qinghe shook her head vigorously. “I do want to go!”
She frowned in frustration. Her ability was too unique, and she had no idea how to improve it.
“If I can never find a way to improve, am I just going to remain a rookie forever?!”
“What are you thinking about?”
Chi Yingdong noticed Meng Qinghe’s worry and gently squeezed her palm.
After hesitating for a moment, Meng Qinghe finally voiced her concerns.
She thought that with both of them working together, they might be able to come up with a solution.
“I don’t know how to improve my ability.”
In the large group heading north during her previous life, Chi Yingdong had heard about a Level 2 healing ability user who didn’t get along with Ye Rourou.
Later, their conflict escalated, and that Level 2 ability user left the team alone.
How that person managed to advance their ability to Level 2, she had no idea.
She gently ruffled Meng Qinghe’s hair, her voice soft, “Improving your ability requires the right opportunity. Perhaps this mission is your chance.”
Chen Junyun had already given them a heads-up.
At the break of dawn, two groups of people knocked on their door.
One team delivered information on mutated animals.
The other brought the equipment Chen Junyun had promised: a combat suit and a specially crafted dagger.
The dagger had been specially treated, coated with a potent anesthetic capable of immobilizing even large animals like elephants.
The dosage was substantial and should prove effective against mutated creatures.
“This dagger is so light.”
Meng Qinghe tested its weight with a few swings and found it surprisingly comfortable to handle.
Chi Yingdong, who was flipping through the documents, looked up and asked, “Do you like it?”
“Yes!” Meng Qinghe grinned, her eyes curving into crescents. “It feels like it was tailor-made for me.”
