- Chapter 27 - Morning Mist in the Summer Forest
Chi Yingdong’s breath hitched instantly.
Her fingertips unconsciously dug into her palms, leaving behind several crescent-shaped red marks, yet she felt no pain at all.
Meng Qinghe, still deep in slumber, had no idea how complicated Chi Yingdong’s emotions were at that moment.
She seemed to be having a pleasant dream, the corners of her lips slightly upturned.
Her long eyelashes fluttered gently, like the wings of a butterfly about to take flight.
The dream clearly relaxed her, as she slowly stretched her limbs and turned over.
The movement caused the curtain draped over her to shift, covering the glimpse of her exposed skin.
Chi Yingdong felt a pang of regret.
The moment she realized what she was regretting, she inwardly scolded herself.
Yet the thin curtain only loosely covered Meng Qinghe, and with each rise and fall of her breathing, it gradually slipped downward, slowly revealing her rounded shoulders and delicate collarbones.
Chi Yingdong instinctively averted her gaze, forcing herself to look away, only to find her eyes drifting back the very next moment.
The sunlight streaming through the window bathed the girl in a warm, gauzy glow.
The scene before her was like a meticulously painted masterpiece, every line exuding a breathtaking beauty.
Chi Yingdong had never imagined that the little ball of fluff who would bristle at the slightest provocation could transform into such an endearing form in her human shape.
This was just too unfair!!
Chi Yingdong forced herself to look away again but unexpectedly met a pair of drowsy, emerald-green eyes.
How could she describe those eyes?
They were like the morning mist in a summer forest, damp and hazy.
The other girl simply gazed at her quietly, without touching or even speaking.
Yet Chi Yingdong felt as if her heartbeat had skipped a beat, her brain momentarily starved of oxygen.
After a moment, the girl’s stalled mind finally rebooted.
She suddenly let out a soft meow.
“Meow…”
Quickly realizing her mistake, she hurriedly raised a hand to cover her mouth.
But the motion caused her arm to tug at the curtain, pulling the entire fabric backward and leaving her completely exposed to Chi Yingdong’s gaze.
“Ah!”
The girl gasped in shock, crossing her arms over her chest in a futile attempt to hide. “Don’t look!”
Chi Yingdong swiftly turned her back, though the tips of her ears flushed a faint pink.
The image of that snow-white skin lingered in her mind, making her curse her own indecent thoughts, her heartbeat pounding so loudly it felt as if it might burst from her chest.
Meng Qinghe scrambled to her feet, hastily pulling the curtain around herself to cover up.
Her fair cheeks instantly flushed a deep red, the tips of her ears tinged with the color of sunset.
She kept her head lowered, not daring to meet Chi Yingdong’s eyes, her voice as faint as a mosquito’s hum. “Um… do you have any spare clothes?”
Chi Yingdong replied immediately, “Yes.”
She then focused her spiritual sense into her storage space, quickly rummaging through its contents.
After picking out a brand-new set of clothes, just as she was about to retrieve them, she remembered that these clothes hadn’t been washed yet.
The thought of letting the girl wear unwashed garments made Chi Yingdong feel it was unclean, and she resisted the idea inwardly.
“Wait for me a moment,” she said, her voice softening, the end of her sentence lilting upward as if coaxing a child. “I’ll go get them for you right now.”
Meng Qinghe tightened her grip on the curtain and whispered in response, “Okay.”
The sound of the wardrobe being hastily searched echoed through the room. Thinking of Meng Qinghe waiting outside, Chi Yingdong didn’t dare waste any time.
In the end, she selected a soft cotton T-shirt and a pair of athletic shorts, then hurried back to the living room in quick strides.
By the time she returned, Meng Qinghe had already wrapped herself up in the curtain like a silkworm cocoon, leaving only her small, palm-sized face visible.
Her cheeks flushed with shyness, even the tip of her nose tinged pink, making her look so endearing it tugged at one’s heartstrings.
“Here, they’re all clean and washed.”
Chi Yingdong lowered her head to hand over the clothes, her gaze falling on the girl’s feet peeking out from behind the curtain.
Her small toes, round and smooth like jade, curled slightly against the floor in nervousness, appearing strikingly pale against the dark curtain.
“Th…thank you.”
Meng Qinghe whispered her gratitude, her voice trembling.
She reached out to take the clothes but suddenly remembered they were ones Chi Yingdong had worn before. Her fingertips flinched back as if burned the moment they touched the fabric.
The next second, she snapped back to reality and hastily grabbed the clothes, pulling them toward her, but accidentally tugged at Chi Yingdong’s sleeve, drawing her closer.
The distance between them abruptly closed.
Chi Yingdong clearly saw the girl’s fluttering eyelashes, blinking rapidly in panic, and the small, adorable mole on the tip of her nose.
Her gaze drifted downward, then blurred before refocusing on that hint of red.
Suddenly, she wanted to kiss her.
She wanted to know what kissing felt like.
“I…I’ll go change!”
Meng Qinghe stammered, clutching the clothes tightly as she turned around.
The curtain fell away from her, blocking Chi Yingdong’s view.
She unfolded the clothes and realized there were no undergarments.
Meng Qinghe bit her lower lip, her fingers trembling slightly as she gripped the fabric, unsure whether she should wear them as they were.
Hearing no sound of changing from behind the curtain, Chi Yingdong asked softly, “What’s wrong? Don’t you like these clothes?”
She paused before adding, “The clothes in the storage haven’t been washed yet, so wear mine for now. Later, I’ll pick out some that fit you and wash them.”
“It’s not that.”
Meng Qinghe mumbled, her lips parting slightly as she clenched the fabric, the tips of her ears turning so red they seemed about to bleed.
After an internal struggle, she closed her eyes and blurted out, “There are no undergarments.”
Only then did Chi Yingdong realize what she had forgotten.
But while it was fine to lend her worn clothes, it was clearly inappropriate to share undergarments.
Chi Yingdong’s ears burned with embarrassment.
She cleared her throat. “Why don’t you wear these for now? I’ll go wash the undergarments right away. What…what size do you wear?”
Meng Qinghe softly stated her size and soon heard Chi Yingdong walking away.
She was left alone in the area.
Meng Qinghe buried her face deeply into the soft cotton T-shirt.
The clothes had been washed and carried the fresh scent of laundry detergent, but beneath it, she could faintly detect Chi Yingdong’s unique fragrance.
She had always been sensitive to scents, and after turning into a cat, this sensitivity had only intensified.
The thought that she could no longer freely bury her face in Chi Yingdong’s neck and breathe in her scent made Meng Qinghe sad.
She buried her face even deeper into the fabric.
“Mmm…”
A barely audible whimper escaped her lips.
Meng Qinghe looked up in a panic and hurriedly pulled on the T-shirt.
The shirt was a bit too big for her, the collar constantly slipping to one side and exposing half her shoulder. She fumbled to adjust it.
After finally getting the shirt in place, she couldn’t resist lifting the collar to her nose and taking a sniff.
“Not done yet?”
Chi Yingdong’s sudden question from outside the door startled Meng Qinghe, making her jump and bump her knee against the wall.
Hearing a sharp inhale from behind the curtain, Chi Yingdong instinctively reached to pull it aside.
Seeing the curtain crumpled in her grip and Chi Yingdong poised to enter, Meng Qinghe immediately called out to stop her.
“Don’t come in!” The voice was strained with tension as Meng Qinghe frantically steadied herself. “I’ll be right out!”
She hurriedly made final adjustments.
Going braless under the T-shirt made her feel uncomfortable and too embarrassed to step out.
After quite some time passed with no sign of Meng Qinghe emerging, Chi Yingdong called out again, “Qinghe?”
“Coming.”
Taking a deep breath, Meng Qinghe drew back the curtain.
Their eyes met for just a moment before both quickly looked away.
Meng Qinghe noticed several dark spots on the hem of Chi Yingdong’s clothes, water stains from washing.
To be more precise, from washing her underwear.
Her face flushed with embarrassment yet again.
The room fell silent.
Only the faint hum of the washing machine remained, yet the air between them felt almost tangible with tension.
Breaking the silence first, Meng Qinghe looked up at Chi Yingdong. “Hello, I’m Meng Qinghe.”
“Yeah, I know. Chi Yingdong.”
Chi Yingdong lifted her gaze, meeting the girl’s shimmering emerald eyes.
The oversized T-shirt draped over her, making her appear petite and delicate.
She stood there awkwardly, the tips of her ears reddening, looking utterly endearing.
After the introductions, the atmosphere once again sank into an awkward silence.
Chi Yingdong opened her mouth to speak.
But being naturally quiet, she had no idea what to say in such a situation.
“Did you… see everything earlier?”
Meng Qinghe regretted the words as soon as they left her mouth.
She cursed herself inwardly, what kind of terrible topic had she brought up?
Chi Yingdong froze for a moment, clearly not expecting Meng Qinghe to mention that.
Worried the girl might get flustered or angry, she carefully considered her words before replying, “It’s fine, really. We both have the same, we’re both girls, after all.”
It sounded like an explanation, but it only made things more awkward.
The tips of Meng Qinghe’s ears visibly reddened even more.
She lowered her head, revealing a flushed neck, her voice barely audible. “Mm.”
