- Chapter 18 - Hooked at First Cast
Standing before the familiar door, Chi Yingdong raised her hand and lightly knocked on the wooden panel with her knuckles.
The crisp sound echoed distinctly in the silent hallway.
During the brief wait, Meng Qinghe rested her paws on Chi Yingdong’s shoulders, her fluffy little head lazily pillowed on her own forepaws, her emerald-green cat eyes slightly narrowed.
For these people who had never appeared in the plot she had written, and the unknown events that followed, she felt both curious and uneasy.
A faint scent of blood and rain lingered in the air, causing the kitten’s nose to twitch involuntarily.
Her tail swayed gently behind her, brushing against Chi Yingdong’s arm.
She couldn’t shake the feeling that Yingdong seemed to have anticipated something all along?
At this thought, the kitten turned her head, her pair of emerald-green eyes gazing at Chi Yingdong in confusion.
Just as the kitten was lost in her thoughts, Chi Yingdong suddenly turned her head.
Chi Yingdong looked back at the kitten, her expression seeming to ask, “What’s wrong?”
Meeting Chi Yingdong’s gaze, Meng Qinghe felt as if she had been caught peeking and quickly turned her head away in nervousness.
Resting her chin on Chi Yingdong’s shoulder, the kitten’s little head couldn’t quite figure it out.
They were practically inseparable, when had Chi Yingdong noticed the clues?
Unaware of what the kitten was thinking, Chi Yingdong only sensed that something was on her mind and gently patted her back.
Click.
The sound of the door lock turning broke the delicate silence.
Xu Luo opened the door, her gaze clearly faltering when it landed on the unfamiliar girl behind Chi Yingdong. She asked in confusion, “Who is this?”
“Don’t know her.”
Chi Yingdong strode directly into the room, the hem of her black trench coat sweeping in a sharp arc.
Hearing Chi Yingdong’s response, Xu Luo didn’t hesitate to close the door.
The girl immediately grabbed the door, preventing it from shutting.
Xu Luo paused and looked outside.
The girl stood there awkwardly, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides, her knuckles turning white from the strain.
Her voice was hoarse, as if she had just been crying. Seeing Xu Luo about to close the door, she anxiously said, “That monster earlier… was actually my mother.”
As she uttered the last two words, her voice nearly broke into a sob, and tears welled up again in her red, swollen eyes.
The girl swallowed hard. “Earlier, a group of people came and knocked on our door.”
“They said there were monsters chasing them, and my mother, soft-hearted, opened the door.”
Her narration suddenly became fragmented, her thin shoulders trembling uncontrollably.
“But then that person pushed my mother out and locked the door from the inside, leaving her no chance to survive.”
After hearing this, Xu Luo clenched her fists until they cracked. “Damn it, a bunch of beasts!”
Her voice trembled slightly with rage.
Chi Yingdong’s footsteps paused almost imperceptibly. She glanced back at Xu Luo but didn’t continue further into the room.
The interior was dim, illuminated only by the flashlight Chi Yingdong had given Xu Chuyao.
The flashlight’s beam cast uneven shadows across Chi Yingdong’s sharply defined profile, making her expression unreadable.
Jiang Yun, seeing Chi Yingdong stop, thought her opportunity had come.
Taking a deep breath, Jiang Yun immediately began to introduce herself. “My name is Jiang Yun. After the world changed, I awakened a strange ability.”
Most people would react upon hearing about awakening a strange ability, and Jiang Yun assumed Chi Yingdong would be no different.
Yet, to her disappointment, Chi Yingdong showed no interest at all.
Thinking about the punishment for failing the mission, Jiang Yun had no choice but to steel herself and continue speaking.
“My ability is that no one can see me as long as I want them not to, but I can only use it once a day.”
“When those people broke into my house, I immediately activated my ability. I followed them invisibly, watching as they ransacked my home looking for food. When they couldn’t find any, they started cursing loudly.”
Jiang Yun glanced at Xu Luo, whose reaction was exactly as she had expected, righteously indignant.
Then she looked at Chi Yingdong, who remained unhurriedly stroking the kitten’s fur, completely unmoved by her story.
Jiang Yun bit her lower lip hard.
“My mother has always had trouble sleeping, so we often kept sleeping pills at home. I took the chance to slip the pills into their water. I didn’t come out until they had all fallen asleep.”
“I wanted to find my mother, but I never expected that she had already turned into a zombie.”
Jiang Yun’s account was very coherent, with clear cause, process, and outcome.
Xu Luo, slow to react, furrowed her brows more and more tightly. The story was too perfect.
How could a middle school student who had just experienced a home invasion and the pain of losing her mother maintain such clear logic?
Either she had exceptional mental fortitude, or she was acting.
Xu Luo was more inclined to believe the latter.
After hearing the story, Meng Qinghe gracefully jumped down to the floor and lazily stretched.
Jiang Yun didn’t speak again, just looked at Chi Yingdong pleadingly.
“Finished?” Chi Yingdong raised her hand and clapped lightly. “Quite thrilling.”
Jiang Yun’s already pale face turned even paler.
She stared at Chi Yingdong and asked stiffly, “What do you mean by that?”
Chi Yingdong’s gaze swept over the girl like a sharp blade.
Her voice cut through the quiet space like an icicle. “You said your ability is invisibility, so it was you who followed her to the rooftop earlier, wasn’t it?”
Though phrased as a question, her tone left no room for doubt.
Back on the rooftop, Chi Yingdong had sensed the fluctuation of an ability.
Combined with what Xu Luo had told her, she had guessed that someone had followed them.
But since she hadn’t seen anyone, she couldn’t determine what ability the follower was using. So she decided not to act rashly and instead play along.
Earlier, when she told Xu Luo outside the door that she would come to the 19th floor later, she had said it for the eavesdropper to hear.
What Chi Yingdong hadn’t expected was that the other party would take the bait so easily.
Xu Luo realized that the “her” in Chi Yingdong’s statement referred to herself and asked in surprise, “She followed me up earlier?”
After those people had confronted her, she had stayed in her home for a long time, making sure they had all left before going upstairs.
She hadn’t expected that one of them could turn invisible and had followed her to Chi Yingdong’s location.
Xu Luo glanced apologetically at Chi Yingdong, realizing that she had inadvertently exposed the other’s current address and caused trouble for her.
Exposed, the girl instinctively tried to run.
But she hadn’t lied about one thing: her ability could indeed only be used once a day, and it had no offensive capabilities.
Xu Luo, who had been keeping an eye on Jiang Yun, saw her attempt to flee and swiftly stepped forward to apprehend her.
“Let me go!”
Captured, Jiang Yun glared at Chi Yingdong with hatred.
Her ferocious expression bore no resemblance to the pitiful demeanor she had shown earlier.
She hurled hysterical curses, spewing foul and ugly words that made Meng Qinghe’s heart ache.
None of these words could harm Chi Yingdong in the slightest. She simply watched coldly from the sidelines.
But Meng Qinghe truly couldn’t hold back any longer. With a powerful push from her hind legs, she pounced right in front of Jiang Yun.
Swish! Her claws flashed out, instantly leaving four bloody gashes on Jiang Yun’s face.
No one present had anticipated Meng Qinghe’s actions. She had always been so gentle, no one expected her to suddenly attack.
Chi Yingdong froze for a moment, then a faint smile curled her lips.
Being protected by her little cat felt unexpectedly heartwarming.
Though the cat was small, even a tiny shield was still a shield.
The scratches on Jiang Yun’s face burned with a stinging pain.
“You damned beast!” Jiang Yun screamed, clutching her face as blood seeped between her fingers.
Chi Yingdong’s eyes instantly turned cold.
Being insulted herself didn’t faze her in the slightest, she saw Jiang Yun as nothing more than a clown.
But hearing her little cat insulted was something she couldn’t tolerate, and she felt Jiang Yun deserved to die a thousand deaths.
Chi Yingdong stepped forward slowly, stopping in front of the girl.
Her slender, bony fingers pressed against Jiang Yun’s chin, tilting her head upward.
The four claw marks looked severe, but the wounds weren’t deep and wouldn’t leave scars.
Who would have thought the little one had such a fiery temper, striking without hesitation.
Chi Yingdong withdrew her hand, activated her ability, and a flash of blue light at her fingertips summoned an ice spike.
“You have an ability,” Jiang Yun stammered, staring in terror at Chi Yingdong’s fingers.
Chi Yingdong remained silent, extending her hand slightly forward.
The ice spike brushed against Jiang Yun’s cheek without breaking the skin, then came to rest against her neck.
The icy sensation spread from her neck through her entire body, causing Jiang Yun to tremble slightly.
Her defiance vanished, and her curses died in her throat.
Trembling, Jiang Yun looked at Chi Yingdong in fear. “Wh-what… what are you doing?”
Chi Yingdong pushed her hand forward a little more, her voice cold. “Who sent you to follow her to find me?”
Jiang Yun could feel the ice spike pressing against the artery in her neck. Just a little more, and it would pierce her skin. She was terrified, wanting to spill everything she knew to ensure her safety.
But if she revealed that person…
She might not make it back safely, and she didn’t know how she could ever face that person again.
Weighing her options, Jiang Yun bit her lower lip until blood appeared on her lips.
The ice spike pierced Jiang Yun’s skin. As soon as a drop of blood appeared, it was frozen by the spike’s chill.
A thin layer of frost slowly spread around the wound.
The gloomy, damp weather, the cold seeping into her blood, and the terror in her heart tormented Jiang Yun until she trembled, her lips parting as she gasped for air.
Just as the ice spike was about to push deeper into her skin, Jiang Yun could no longer hold back and blurted out the truth. A sharp wind blade sliced through the air with a whistling sound.
The wind blade moved swiftly, carrying a deadly intent as it cut through the air.
Chi Yingdong abruptly grabbed Jiang Yun’s collar and yanked her away.
But the wind blade still sliced off half of Jiang Yun’s ear. Blood gushed out, flowing down her neck and into her collar, darkening her already deep-colored school uniform.
“Stay here,” Chi Yingdong said, pushing Jiang Yun toward Xu Luo before immediately chasing in the direction the wind blade had come from.
At the end of the corridor, a dark figure flashed past.
The opponent was fast. Chi Yingdong chased them down several floors but couldn’t catch up.
Instead, the distance between her and the dark figure widened until she lost sight of them.
Chi Yingdong stopped, catching a faint trace of residual energy fluctuation in the air. The other party had already fled far away.
Fortunately, they still had Jiang Yun in their hands, so the other party would likely return.
When Chi Yingdong returned to the 19th floor, Bao Qiujuan had already roughly treated Jiang Yun’s wounds.
The bleeding had stopped, but with no way to get to a hospital, the severed ear couldn’t be reattached.
Jiang Yun sat slumped on the ground, his eyes vacant, still unable to shake off the sorrow of being abandoned by his companions.
