The Villainous Female Side Character Pretends to Be an Omega in the Apocalypse and Raises a Cat - Chapter 13
Meng Qinghe’s fleshy paws unconsciously curled, her translucent claw tips inadvertently hooking onto Chi Yingdong’s collar.
Chi Yingdong’s oar paused for a moment.
The faint tugging sensation at her chest made her heart tighten.
“What’s wrong?”
Chi Yingdong lowered her gaze to the kitten in her arms and asked softly.
Hearing the voice, Meng Qinghe looked up in confusion.
The seriousness in her emerald-green pupils had yet to fade, she was now filled with fighting spirit for training.
Chi Yingdong vaguely sensed that something about the kitten had subtly changed, yet she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.
As she pondered, the water’s surface suddenly rippled strangely, as if something were swimming beneath.
Anything out of the ordinary must be a sign of trouble.
Chi Yingdong pressed her lips together, her eyes locked intently on the water, where a dark shadow could be seen swiftly moving below.
Meng Qinghe followed Chi Yingdong’s gaze and immediately grasped the severity of the situation.
She leaped out of Chi Yingdong’s embrace, perched on the edge of the boat, and peered into the water.
With the far superior vision of a feline, she quickly caught sight of the dark mass in the water.
Unfortunately, the water was too murky, and she could only roughly discern from the shadow’s outline that it was a fish the length of an adult’s arm.
Meng Qinghe turned her head to glance at Chi Yingdong and gave a serious nod.
There was indeed something in the water!
Chi Yingdong’s nerves were taut, her supernatural ability primed within her, ready to confront any potential danger at a moment’s notice.
However, the mysterious creature in the water seemed only to be toying with them.
It continued to swim beneath the inflatable boat but never launched an attack.
With the kitten by her side, Chi Yingdong didn’t want the situation to escalate in an unpredictable direction.
Since the creature in the water hadn’t struck first, she had no intention of provoking it either.
Gradually, perhaps bored, the underwater creature swam away into the distance.
Fearing it might be a trick, Chi Yingdong still gripped the oar tightly, vigilantly scanning her surroundings.
In her previous life, during the early stages of the apocalypse, she had never left her house.
Thus, she knew very little about the outside world, which made her especially cautious when facing unknown dangers.
Even though the unknown creature had left, Chi Yingdong couldn’t guarantee it wouldn’t return or launch a surprise attack.
This was no place to linger. Chi Yingdong quickly made her decision, paddling the oar to propel the boat forward.
The one-kilometer distance wasn’t far to begin with, and Chi Yingdong had increased her rowing speed.
Soon, the gilded characters “Banyan Tree Creative Park” came into view.
At this moment, the vast creative park lay lifeless.
Towering glass curtain walls, repeatedly washed by rain, gleamed with a cold, dim light, their surfaces reflecting the gloomy, murky sky like a decaying small town.
As the inflatable boat passed beneath a distorted billboard, Meng Qinghe’s gaze fell upon the bright red text on it.
“Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Setting Sail for Dreams.”
Meng Qinghe felt a stir in her heart.
Looking at these eight words, she seemed to see a group of fearless, passionate young people striving courageously.
Yet the slogan, repeatedly soaked and washed by rain, had become blurred, much like the path ahead, muddy and unclear.
Chi Yingdong rowed the boat to the base of the office building, where more and more documents floated on the water’s surface.
Meng Qinghe stared at a floating document pouch in the water.
It was a pouch printed with a Hello Kitty pattern, inside which was preserved an employee ID card. The girl in the photo had a youthful, vibrant smile.
The water surface rippled as increasingly more polluted water splashed onto the document folder, slowly submerging the papers into the depths.
A single night had transformed this once bustling, lively entrepreneurial park into a scene of ruin and decay, burying who knows how many people’s dreams along with it.
Just as Meng Qinghe was sighing over the sight before her, Chi Yingdong suddenly scooped her up.
A cold glint flashed as an axe materialized in Chi Yingdong’s palm.
Bang!
The glass in front of them shattered, fragments flying like meteors.
The loud noise made Meng Qinghe’s ears uncomfortable. Her little paws batted at her ears, looking both adorable and comical.
Unfazed by the blast, Chi Yingdong adjusted the kitten in her arms. “Hold on tight.”
Shielding the kitten against her chest, she nimbly climbed through the broken window.
The rubber soles of her rain boots crunched over the glass shards on the floor, the crisp sound echoing loudly in the quiet space.
They had broken into a wedding dress shop.
Meng Qinghe’s eyes darted around, taking in every gown in the store.
Almost no woman is immune to the allure of a wedding dress, even those who never plan to marry often dream of wearing one someday.
These dresses, though now shrouded in dim light, still shimmered brilliantly.
After surveying the entire shop, Meng Qinghe’s gaze finally settled on the display case at the center.
Inside was a mermaid-style wedding gown with a deep V-back design, both sensual and elegant.
What stood out most were the tiny diamonds and pearls adorning the curved fishtail hem, scattering faint glimmers in the gloom like scattered stars.
Meng Qinghe couldn’t help but imagine how this dress would look on Chi Yingdong.
It would be absolutely stunning!
She had to take this gown with them!!
Meng Qinghe lifted a paw and gently tapped Chi Yingdong’s arm, directing her attention to the dress in the case.
Chi Yingdong understood immediately.
After spending so much time together, they had developed a silent understanding.
Chi Yingdong stored the gown from the display case into her spatial inventory. Then, her eyes swept over the other dresses in the shop, and on a whim, she collected every last one.
The wedding shop’s main door led directly to the office building. By now, Chi Yingdong was an expert at breaking windows.
Soon, the woman and her cat reached the lobby and checked the directory.
Chi Yingdong quickly located the pet store on the second floor.
She felt a surge of relief, had they arrived a day later, the second floor would likely have been flooded too.
The pet store was at the end of the hallway.
As they walked down the corridor, zombies in the offices on either sides sensed living prey and clawed at the doors, snarling ferociously.
The spotless glass doors offered a clear view of the zombies’ twisted, grotesque faces.
Chi Yingdong walked past them expressionlessly, finally stopping in front of the pet store. Her cool reflection stared back from the tempered glass door.
Inside was a single zombie wearing a brown apron printed with the store’s logo.
Chi Yingdong lightly tapped the glass door, producing a sharp, clear sound.
The previously aimless zombie spun around and charged toward the door.
Chi Yingdong watched in surprise, this zombie moved much faster than any she had encountered over the past two days.
Her eyes scanned the shop before settling on the animal carcasses littering the floor.
In just a day and a half, this zombie had managed to kill every animal in the store.
Meanwhile, the zombie had reached the door. A foul stench, thick with the smell of blood, seeped through the gaps in the glass.
Chi Yingdong summoned her ability, and an ice blade materialized in her hand.
As she pulled the door open, a flash of cold light followed.
The zombie’s neck erupted in a spray of black blood, its head tumbling to the ground, its hollow eye sockets fixed vacantly on the ceiling.
With the zombie’s body blocking the doorway, Chi Yingdong frowned slightly and stepped over the still-twitching corpse.
Once inside the store, Meng Qinghe no longer wanted to be held by Chi Yingdong. She leaped down gently and landed steadily on her feet.
She then began exploring the entire space. The pet store was large, with shelves filled to the brim with a dazzling array of items, canned food, cat treats, and toys of all kinds.
Chi Yingdong cleared out all the merchandise in the pet store and prepared to leave with the kitten.
Just then, a sudden noise came from the pet grooming room, a sound like something heavy falling to the floor.
Chi Yingdong’s footsteps halted.
The grooming room was located at the very back of the pet store. She maneuvered around the rows of shelves, slowly approaching.
Chi Yingdong placed her hand on the doorknob and pressed gently, but the door was locked from the inside.
“Come out!” Chi Yingdong’s voice was icy cold.
Instantly, the room fell silent. The earlier noise seemed as if it had never occurred, replaced only by a deathly stillness that permeated the air.
After a moment, Meng Qinghe’s ears twitched.
There was the sound of something being dragged, accompanied by ragged, uneven breathing.
Someone inside was trying to barricade the door.
Whoever was inside was afraid of them.
This realization made Chi Yingdong withdraw her hand and walk back toward the entrance.
Meng Qinghe noticed a list of the store’s staff posted on the glass wall near the door.
There were two photos. The one on the left was of the zombie Chi Yingdong had just killed, while the girl in the photo on the right had delicate features, most likely the one hiding in the grooming room.
Meng Qinghe quickly scanned the name beneath the photo.
Ye Rourou!
The female lead of the novel!
Ye Rourou was an ordinary Omega with no special abilities. In the book, she managed to survive until the mid-apocalypse solely because she possessed a large stockpile of supplies.
However, Meng Qinghe had only briefly mentioned these plot points that had no connection to Qiao Ying.
As a result, the exact nature of these supplies was never clearly specified.
Thinking of the room full of pet supplies they had just stored away, it occurred to her that the supplies Ye Rourou possessed could very well be pet food.
Meng Qinghe licked her paw, contemplating the matter seriously.
Because she had wanted to eat instant noodles, had Chi Yingdong just taken all the female lead’s supplies?
Why did that feel so satisfying?!
Moreover, Meng Qinghe wasn’t worried in the slightest that Ye Rourou would die without these supplies.
If the female lead could be taken down so easily, she wouldn’t be the female lead.
At the same time, Meng Qinghe thought of another person.
Su Tinglan.
Ye Rourou’s senior.
As the female lead, how could Ye Rourou lack admirers?
Su Tinglan was one of them.
When Meng Qinghe first created this character, she intended for Su Tinglan to serve as a deceased “white moonlight” for Ye Rourou, someone to provoke Qiao Ying at certain moments and deepen the emotional tension.
Combining the information at hand, Meng Qinghe pieced together the complete storyline.
On the day the apocalypse broke out, Su Tinglan happened to be working overtime and was trapped in her company.
Thus, she was able to rescue Ye Rourou when the flood submerged the second floor of the creative park.
Relying on the supplies from the pet store, the two formed a small team and survived the early stages of the apocalypse.
However, to shape Ye Rourou’s image as weak and helpless, the entire team eventually perished.
After Qiao Ying met Ye Rourou, he always felt sorry for her, thinking she was bravely surviving alone in the apocalypse. Little did he know that she had never truly suffered much hardship during that time.
Looking at the plot from this new perspective, Meng Qinghe couldn’t help but feel that her earlier writing had been utterly illogical.
The entire world seemed to revolve around romance.
Thinking of this, Meng Qinghe couldn’t resist glancing up at the ceiling.
He couldn’t help but wonder how Su Tinglan would react when he came looking for Ye Rourou tomorrow and found an empty shop. Would he still stand by Ye Rourou through the early days of the apocalypse?
