- Chapter 11 - The First Floor Flooded
The sky outside was gradually darkening, yet Chi Yingdong had not returned home.
Although Meng Qinghe had great faith in Chi Yingdong’s abilities, every passing second felt like an invisible hand tightly gripping her nerves.
The tablet in her hands had long lost its appeal, as restlessness and unease spread wildly within her.
She began to regret not having gone out with her.
Meng Qinghe paced back and forth in the room, trying to distract herself from the anxiety.
However, the night outside grew increasingly deep.
The unease pressed down on her, making it hard to breathe, so she simply crouched behind the door to wait.
This way, she thought, as soon as Chi Yingdong returned home, she would be the first to see her.
After what felt like an eternity, Meng Qinghe heard familiar footsteps approaching from afar.
Then came the soft tapping sounds of the password lock being pressed, stirring an indescribable excitement in Meng Qinghe’s heart.
She knew Chi Yingdong was back!
Meng Qinghe stood up, her eyes fixed intently on the door.
The door slowly opened, revealing Chi Yingdong with slightly disheveled hair but, fortunately, no signs of injury.
Unable to contain her excitement any longer, Meng Qinghe leaped forward, landing steadily in Chi Yingdong’s arms.
“Meow, meow, meow?”
Why are you back so late?
The kitten’s rapid meows were filled with worry and tension.
Even without understanding the meows, Chi Yingdong could guess the kitten’s meaning from her anxious tone.
Gently supporting the kitten’s bottom, Chi Yingdong changed her shoes and walked inside.
Sitting on the sofa with the kitten in her arms, Chi Yingdong patted the kitten’s back repeatedly, soothing her emotions as she softly explained, “I was delayed collecting supplies on the way. I didn’t encounter any danger, so don’t worry.”
From Chi Yingdong’s words, Meng Qinghe confirmed that she hadn’t faced any danger, and her tense nerves relaxed, the anxiety in her heart dissipating.
Meng Qinghe affectionately rubbed against Chi Yingdong’s chest, leaning on her with dependence.
Chi Yingdong, too, savored this warmth, as if the exhaustion of a busy day had vanished in that moment.
However, her stomach chose that inopportune moment to growl, shattering the cozy atmosphere.
An afternoon of hard work had consumed a great deal of Chi Yingdong’s energy.
She planned to go to the kitchen and whip up something simple to fill her stomach.
But just as she was about to stand up, the kitten hooked a claw into her clothes.
The kitten clung tightly, her eyes pitiful and insecure, melting Chi Yingdong’s heart into a puddle.
Unwilling to bring the kitten into the kitchen and expose her to cooking fumes, Chi Yingdong thought for a moment before retrieving a packet of spicy pepper-flavored instant noodles from her space, deciding to make do with it for dinner.
Instant noodles were the kind of food that, despite knowing they’d grow tiresome if eaten too often, still tempted people when they saw others eating them and caught a whiff of their aroma.
Meng Qinghe was in exactly that situation.
The pungent aroma of the spicy peppers wafted into her nostrils, stimulating her senses. Saliva uncontrollably filled her mouth, and she couldn’t help but swallow.
Noticing the kitten staring unblinkingly at the instant noodles, Chi Yingdong thought she must be hungry too.
She had stocked up on plenty of pet snacks in her space but hadn’t yet let the kitten try them. This seemed like the perfect opportunity.
With that in mind, Chi Yingdong took out some freeze-dried snacks from her space.
There were cubed, dried rabbit meat freeze-dried treats, as well as small dried yellow croakers with roe.
Cats have a keen sense of smell, but looking at the rabbit meat and small yellow croakers, which emitted a fishy odor and lacked any seasoning, Meng Qinghe felt no interest at all.
“Meow, meow, meow.”
Meng Qinghe meowed and pushed the snack away with her paw.
Seeing the kitten still staring at the instant noodles, Chi Yingdong immediately understood what she was thinking and said sternly, “Kittens can’t eat instant noodles.”
Meng Qinghe gazed at the noodles, her thoughts drifting back to when she was still human.
Compared to the variety of foods humans could enjoy, the options for a kitten were far too limited. The more she thought about it, the more wronged she felt.
“Meow.”
Just one bite.
Meng Qinghe looked at Chi Yingdong with pleading eyes, her tiny paw gently tapping the instant noodles.
She really, really wanted to try it!
Even just one bite would be enough.
“You little rascal.” Chi Yingdong sighed helplessly and pulled out her phone to search online.
“Can a one-and-a-half-month-old kitten eat instant noodles?”
“Consequences of kittens eating instant noodles”
“Can calico cats eat instant noodles?”
After some searching, Chi Yingdong found a type of instant noodles specifically made for pets – cat-friendly instant noodles.
But with the apocalypse raging outside and zombies roaming the streets, there were no delivery services available.
Still, Chi Yingdong checked a delivery app and found that the nearest store selling pet instant noodles was only one kilometer away – not too far.
However, it was already too late today. They could go tomorrow.
Having made up her mind, Chi Yingdong tried to reason with the kitten.
“How about I go get this pet instant noodles tomorrow? We’ll have it then, okay?” she coaxed.
Seeing what Chi Yingdong had searched for, Meng Qinghe understood her concerns and obediently nodded in agreement.
After the two finished their dinner, there was still some time before bed.
Chi Yingdong selected a movie to project onto the screen – a British romance film titled “Carol.”
To her surprise, Meng Qinghe discovered that Chi Yingdong also loved this film.
This movie had given Meng Qinghe the courage to confront her own sexuality for the first time. Since then, she would rewatch it every Christmas season.
There was a particular dialogue from the film that she adored:
“You’re a strange girl.”
“Why?”
“Flung out of space.”
Come to think of it, Christmas was approaching.
As Meng Qinghe watched the film intently, she realized that when she watched it alone before, she only found the intimate scenes sweet and enjoyable.
But sitting beside Chi Yingdong now, with the screen showing subtle kissing scenes, she felt inexplicably shy.
She secretly tilted her head, stealing glances at Chi Yingdong from the corner of her eye.
Her companion appeared completely normal, focused intently on the screen.
Meng Qinghe’s little paws unconsciously scratched at the sofa as she forced herself to concentrate on the movie, but she couldn’t absorb any of the subsequent plot.
When the movie ended, Chi Yingdong turned off the projector, and the room fell into silence.
Seeing the kitten sitting motionless on the sofa, Chi Yingdong waved a hand in front of her and teased, “No thoughts to share after watching the movie?”
Meng Qinghe snapped out of her daze, her gaze falling on Chi Yingdong’s hand.
Chi Yingdong’s hands weren’t particularly large, but her fingers were slender and elegant with distinct knuckles – truly pleasing to look at.
On her index finger she wore a rose gold ring covered in diamonds, making her hands appear even paler.
Meng Qinghe jumped off the sofa, ignoring Chi Yingdong’s request for her thoughts.
The kitten led the way to the bathroom. Watching her retreating figure, Chi Yingdong smiled and followed.
After washing the kitten’s paws and face, Chi Yingdong sent her out and began her own shower.
Chi Yingdong was accustomed to taking a shower and changing into loungewear as soon as she returned home, as it helped her relax quickly.
But today, she discovered that snuggling with the kitten could achieve the same effect, even bringing her a unique sense of comfort.
After washing up, Chi Yingdong returned to her room to find the kitten already curled up obediently at the foot of the bed like a fluffy pancake, pretending to sleep with its eyes closed.
A flicker of satisfaction crossed Chi Yingdong’s eyes as she lifted the blanket and got into bed.
Influenced by a movie she had watched, Meng Qinghe hadn’t intended to enter Chi Yingdong’s room today. Her mind was filled with ambiguous scenes that made her feel unsettled.
Even though she was just a kitten, a little one not even two months old, and Chi Yingdong wouldn’t do anything outrageous to her, nor could she, as a cat, do anything herself, sharing the same bed still felt awkward.
However, after spending so many days together, Meng Qinghe had come to understand Chi Yingdong’s temperament. If Chi Yingdong didn’t see her in the room, she would undoubtedly come looking for her and carry her in. Rather than that, Meng Qinghe decided it was better to enter the room on her own.
Watching the kitten curled up at the foot of the bed, still feigning sleep even after she entered, Chi Yingdong teased, “Why are you sleeping at the foot of the bed? Aren’t you afraid I might kick you off in the middle of the night?”
To Meng Qinghe, Chi Yingdong’s words sounded entirely different, like a threat, and a serious one at that!
Reluctantly, the kitten rose from the foot of the bed, shook its body, and settled down beside Chi Yingdong’s pillow.
Before falling asleep, Chi Yingdong announced, “I’ve made an exercise plan for you. We’ll start tomorrow.”
Reminded by Chi Yingdong, Meng Qinghe belatedly remembered what she had forgotten, tomorrow was the start of her exercise routine.
The kitten inwardly groaned. She hated exercising, but she didn’t dare refuse.
As she pondered how to handle the situation, the soft sound of Chi Yingdong’s breathing beside her lulled Meng Qinghe, and she slowly closed her eyes.
However, for the residents on the first floor, this night was destined to be anything but peaceful.
In the middle of the night, the rain intensified, overwhelming the city’s drainage system until it ceased to function.
With the drainage system paralyzed, the water level rose rapidly, and the first to suffer were those on the lower floors, half of the first floor was soon submerged.
Many first-floor residents were abruptly awakened by the floodwaters. In the cold winter night, their drenched bodies trembled uncontrollably.
The first floor was no longer habitable, leaving them with nowhere to go.
The residents knew that zombies still roamed outside, and knocking on their neighbors’ doors now was risky. They couldn’t be sure if other households were safe, everything was uncertain.
Then, a plea for help appeared in the residents’ group chat from a first-floor occupant, offering to pay 500 yuan per day for temporary shelter, with the possibility of increasing the amount if necessary.
Soon, other first-floor residents emerged one after another like bamboo shoots after a spring rain.
Among them were some with foresight. They understood that with zombies roaming outside and the added challenge of flooding, obtaining food would become increasingly difficult, making supplies all the more precious.
If they didn’t find shelter soon, their food stocks would be ruined by the water. Some even revealed that they had stockpiled provisions.
In the early days of the apocalypse, many still clung to the hope that it would soon pass.
Whether motivated by money or goodwill, some residents on higher floors stepped up, inviting those from the first floor to stay with them temporarily.
Once someone took the lead, several others followed, announcing that they, too, had spare rooms available.
Early the next morning, Chi Yingdong lay in bed, silently scrolling through the 99+ unread messages in the homeowners’ group chat.
The events unfolding in this life mirrored those of the previous one, many residents were still taking people in.
Recalling how, in the past life, these well-intentioned acts of sheltering others had ultimately invited disaster and led to their deaths, Chi Yingdong turned off his phone screen.
