- Chapter 79 - Snow White and the Wicked Stepmother
Zhuang Yuzhen clutched his head as he opened his eyes, finding himself sitting in his office. His phone had fallen onto his lap. As he reached down to pick it up, his movements froze when he saw his chat history with Yang Yuanqi.
He stared at the messages, reading the sentence “Ning Xiao and Yun Can’er have registered their marriage” no less than ten times. He was convinced he must be dreaming. He definitely hadn’t woken up yet; this all had to be fake!
Zhuang Yuzhen closed his eyes again.
His secretary knocked and entered with some documents. Hearing footsteps, Zhuang Yuzhen opened his eyes and frowned. “Why am I even dreaming about her?”
The secretary approached, confused. “President Zhuang, these documents need your signature.”
Zhuang Yuzhen looked at her coldly. “This is my dream. I don’t want to sign them.”
The secretary froze, wondering what kind of nonsense her boss was talking about. “President Zhuang, these are urgent. You must sign them today,” she said in a soft, persuasive voice.
Zhuang Yuzhen let out a scoff. “The ‘honey trap’ won’t work! Get out of here; I don’t want to dream about you!”
The secretary stared at him strangely. “President Zhuang, you don’t actually think you’re dreaming, do you?”
Zhuang Yuzhen lifted his chin with disdain. “What else could it be?”
“…” The secretary hesitated. “How about I pinch you?”
Zhuang Yuzhen immediately offered his arm. “Pinch me. Do it hard. If I don’t feel pain, you’re fired on the spot.”
The secretary steeled herself. She set down the documents and used her thumb and forefinger to catch a small piece of flesh on Zhuang Yuzhen’s arm. “President Zhuang, I’m really going to do it.”
“Do it!”
The secretary applied full force. As her fingernails dug in, Zhuang Yuzhen’s expression instantly contorted with agony, and his face turned white. The secretary let go in a panic. “President Zhuang! Did I do it too hard? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to!”
Zhuang Yuzhen stared blankly at a spot in the air. “Why does it hurt… this is impossible…”
An hour later, Zhuang Yuzhen finally accepted the reality. He had traveled to a parallel world! In this world, Ning Xiao didn’t love him; instead, she was in love with Yun Can’er, and they were already married!
Zhuang Yuzhen felt lost and heartbroken, but he quickly pulled himself together. The people in the two worlds were different, so their trajectories were naturally different. It didn’t matter if the Ning Xiao of this world didn’t love him; the one he loved was the Ning Xiao from his original world.
Having convinced himself of this, he began searching for a way back. He had no memory of how he arrived, so he scoured the internet for information, eventually concluding that “electric shock stimulation” was the way to return to his parallel world.
Zhuang Yuzhen was so desperate to go back that he didn’t even consider the possibility of being fried to a crisp. He set up the equipment he bought online at home, sat solemnly in a chair, closed his eyes, and flipped the switch.
Zzap! A current flashed through him. Zhuang Yuzhen’s hair stood on end, and he collapsed in the chair, unconscious. He remained out for the entire night. The next day, when his secretary couldn’t contact him, she rushed to his house and immediately sent the unconscious man to the hospital.
Zhuang Yuzhen had become a vegetable.
Two Years Later
When Ning Xiao heard the news, she was driving Yun Can’er to school. She paused for a moment and asked System 13579: Is there something wrong with the male lead’s brain?
If nothing was wrong with it, how could he have had the heart to abuse the female lead in the original plot?
Fair point.
Yun Can’er noticed the fluctuation in Ning Xiao’s mood. “Ning Ning, what happened?”
“Nothing,” Ning Xiao replied. “I just suddenly feel reluctant to let you go.” With the male lead no longer an obstacle, they could date however they pleased. Ning Xiao suddenly didn’t want Yun Can’er to inherit the family business; once Yun Can’er got busy, their time together would dwindle.
She voiced her concerns. Yun Can’er blushed shyly. “I can be the Chairperson and hire a professional manager. I’ll only be a little bit busy until I find the right person.”
Ning Xiao hadn’t expected Yun Can’er to be so forward-thinking. She smiled. “Then I’ll have to keep a sharp eye out for talent before you graduate.”
The Succession
Two years later, Yun Can’er graduated early from Ocean University. On the day of her graduation, Ning Xiao called a shareholders’ meeting. She revealed that her marriage to Yun Boyuan had been a sham and proposed that Yun Can’er take over as CEO.
One shareholder tried to act on his seniority. “Ning Xiao, you no longer have the qualifications to manage the Yun Group. Yun Boyuan’s daughter is just a girl in her early twenties; she’s even less qualified. We should hold a vote among the shareholders for a new CEO.”
Ning Xiao offered a faint smile. “The daughter of the late Chairman Yun holds 49% of the shares in the Yun Group. It is only right that she inherits it. As for concerns about her age, I believe they are unnecessary. She is already here; I think everyone should meet her.”
Ning Xiao sent a message to Yun Can’er. Yun Can’er took a deep breath, squared her shoulders, and pushed open the boardroom doors. All eyes turned toward her. Yun Can’er wore a perfect smile and nodded politely to the shareholders.
Yang Yuanqi, standing beside Ning Xiao, nearly had his eyes pop out of his head. “Yun… Yun Can’er is the Chairman’s daughter?!!”
Over the past few years, Yun Can’er had served as Ning Xiao’s assistant. Her influence within the group was no less than Yang Yuanqi’s. Almost every shareholder recognized her. Like Yang Yuanqi, they were shocked. “Assistant Yun is Boyuan’s daughter?!”
Ning Xiao grinned. “Her surname is Yun. Why couldn’t she be the Chairman’s daughter?”
The room fell into a stunned silence. Everyone had witnessed Yun Can’er’s capabilities over the years. Her taking over the Yun Group was both legitimate and expected. The meeting ended successfully; Yun Can’er became the CEO, and Ning Xiao officially retired.
Back in the office, Yun Can’er hugged Ning Xiao and acted spoiled. “I used to accompany you to work, now you have to accompany me!”
Ning Xiao laughed. “Fine. I’ll be your assistant.”
Yun Can’er seemed to think of something, and her ears turned red. She leaned in and whispered, “We’ve never done it in the office before…”
Ning Xiao had thought about it before but never had the chance. Now that Yun Can’er brought it up, she couldn’t restrain herself. She walked to the door and locked it. After ensuring it was secure, she walked back, swept Yun Can’er up, and placed her on the wide mahogany desk.
She leaned down, her voice low and husky. “I’ll satisfy you right now…”
The Happy Ending
A year later, under Yun Can’er’s leadership, the market value of the Yun Group doubled. Just as the shareholders were grinning from ear to ear, Ning Xiao finally found the perfect professional manager.
With her silver tongue, Yun Can’er convinced the shareholders to give the manager a one-year trial. If they weren’t up to par, she would return as CEO. With no more worries, Yun Can’er and Ning Xiao happily departed for a year-long honeymoon.
