- Chapter 63 - Snow White and the Wicked Stepmother
At 8:00 PM, music filled the ballroom where wine flowed and elegant figures mingled. Many attendees immediately invited their partners to join the dance floor.
As the current president of the Yun Group, Ning Xiao was the focal point wherever she went. In less than an hour, she had been toasted seven or eight times. Since each person was a representative of a partner company, she couldn’t slight them and had to accompany them in drinking.
Fortunately, this body had a decent tolerance for alcohol. Despite switching between red wine, white wine, and champagne, she only had a slight flush on her cheeks and a misty look in her eyes; her mind remained perfectly clear, and her stride was as steady as ever.
“President Ning, may I have the honor of inviting you for a dance?” A slicked-back young heir stood with his left hand behind his back and his right hand gently reaching for Ning Xiao’s, bowing as he looked up at her.
Before Ning Xiao could respond, Yun Can’er suddenly stepped in front of her. “I’m afraid you don’t have that honor!” she said coldly, grabbing Ning Xiao’s hand and leading her away, leaving the young heir stunned.
They walked to the bar, where Yun Can’er grabbed a glass and gulped down half of it before realizing it tasted spicy and smelled strongly of alcohol.
Ning Xiao was a step too late to stop her. She watched as Yun Can’er’s pale face instantly turned a deep crimson. Helplessly, she took the glass from the girl’s hand and set it aside.
“Those people aren’t good enough for you!” Yun Can’er swayed, her eyes hazy with intoxication as she muttered unhappily.
Ning Xiao chuckled and reached out to support her. “Then what kind of person do you think is good enough for me?”
Most people were on the dance floor, so they were standing in a secluded spot. Yun Can’er leaned against Ning Xiao’s shoulder, dizzy from the alcohol. She rubbed her brow. “Anyway, not them.”
Seeing her getting drunker by the second, Ning Xiao said, “Can’er, you’re drunk.”
Yun Can’er pushed back weakly. “I’m not drunk. Don’t hold me, I can stand on my own.”
Because they were so close, their bodies inevitably brushed against each other as Yun Can’er struggled. Ning Xiao felt a strange, familiar flutter in her heart and instinctively loosened her grip.
Yun Can’er managed to stand on her own for a moment, a triumphant smile spreading across her face. “See? I told you I could stand”
Before she could finish, her legs gave way. She pitched forward. Ning Xiao caught her by the waist, and they spun half a turn before stabilizing.
“Can’er, are you okay?” Ning Xiao asked, looking down.
Yun Can’er’s chin was tucked into the crook of Ning Xiao’s shoulder, her warm breath hitting the side of Ning Xiao’s neck. Hearing the question, Yun Can’er suddenly looked up, her seaweed-like hair falling back. She pouted her bright red lips and lunged forward on her tiptoes.
Ning Xiao didn’t have time to dodge. Yun Can’er’s lips brushed right against the corner of her mouth.
Boom!
In that brief second of contact, brilliant fireworks seemed to explode in Ning Xiao’s mind. That familiar palpitation spread from her heart to her entire body. She looked at Yun Can’er—who was already squinting her eyes and preparing to fall asleep against her—in disbelief.
This Yun Can’er didn’t just share a name with the girl from the previous world.
Surprise and complex emotions flickered across Ning Xiao’s face. She reached out to touch Yun Can’er’s cheek and asked the system: [Xiao Qi, do you think it’s possible for the same person to exist in different novel worlds?]
System 13579 replied: 【It is possible.】
[Why? Do you know something?] Ning Xiao’s heart began to race.
【Of course I know. You’re doing it right now, Host moving from one world to the next.】 The system sounded confused.
【Why are you asking this all of a sudden?】
Ning Xiao looked down at Yun Can’er’s flushed, sleeping face, her smile softening: [Xiao Qi, do you know? I’ve found my treasure again.]
The system didn’t quite understand. 【What treasure? Where?】
[In my arms. I’m holding my most precious treasure.]
Since Yun Can’er was drunk, Ning Xiao didn’t stay until the end of the gala. She took the girl home immediately. On the way, the system kept asking what she meant, and Ning Xiao shared her theory.
【You suspect this world’s Yun Can’er is the same one from the last world? That’s… impossible, right?】 The system’s voice was full of disbelief.
Ning Xiao had calmed down. [If I can switch worlds with your help, why can’t Can’er?]
【But you were originally a human, and you have my help.】
[How do you know her situation isn’t like mine? Do you remember why the female lead in this world is also named Yun Can’er?]
【That’s because the Main System… the Main System?!】 13579 shrieked. 【Could it be related to the Main System? I’ll go check!】
When they arrived at Youyun Villa, Ning Xiao supported the half-asleep Yun Can’er inside. The housekeeper, Sister He, came out and was startled by the girl’s state. Smelling the alcohol, she said, “Madam, I’ll go make some sobering soup. You should take the Eldest Miss to her room; she’ll feel better lying down.”
“Thanks, Sister He.” Ning Xiao nodded and took Yun Can’er up the elevator to the third floor. She helped her onto the bed.
Ning Xiao knelt by the bedside, leaning over to remove the pearl hair accessories. As she tried to stand up, she realized Yun Can’er was clutching her gown, refusing to let her leave.
The way Ning Xiao looked at Yun Can’er now was entirely different—it was filled with the joy of a lost love found again. When she left the previous world, she thought having spent decades with her was enough. Now she realized she wanted to be with her forever; a single lifetime would never be enough.
Ning Xiao leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to Yun Can’er’s forehead. Her heart still fluttered. Even before the system returned, she was certain: this was the girl she loved.
The housekeeper brought the sobering soup. Ning Xiao took it from her. “I’ll feed her. You can go rest, Sister He.”
Once alone, Ning Xiao set the soup on the nightstand and leaned close. “Can’er, wake up.”
Yun Can’er murmured and frowned. Her lashes fluttered open, revealing misty black eyes that looked at Ning Xiao sluggishly.
“I’ll help you up.”
Ning Xiao slid one hand behind the girl’s back and supported her neck with the other, gently pulling her into a sitting position. To keep her from falling, Ning Xiao sat behind her, letting her lean against her chest. Yun Can’er adjusted herself until she found a comfortable spot.
The friction made Ning Xiao feel a bit warm. Forcing herself to stay calm, she began to feed her the soup. “Come, open up.”
“Can’er is so good.”
After the soup was finished, System 13579 finally returned.
【Host!】 The mechanical voice sounded excited.
Ning Xiao remained calm: [Confirmed?]
【Yes! This Yun Can’er and the one from the previous world share the same soul! The difference is that you retain your memories, while she loses hers every time she enters a new world. The Main System says it’s to ‘increase her emotional cognitive depth and immersion.’]
Ning Xiao rubbed Yun Can’er’s stomach to help with digestion while asking: [Who is she… in the real world?]
【I asked several times, but the Main System refuses to answer. Given how she travels, I suspect she might be entering these worlds voluntarily, but I don’t know the reason.】
A series of theories flashed through Ning Xiao’s mind.
“Ngh…” Yun Can’er suddenly turned around and hugged Ning Xiao. “Ning-ning… my head hurts…”
Ning Xiao put everything else aside, her full attention on the treasure in her arms. “I’ll massage it for you, okay?”
Yun Can’er pressed her cheek against Ning Xiao’s neck and nodded. Her nose brushed against the delicate skin, sending a tingle through Ning Xiao.
“Stay still. Here, lie on my lap,” Ning Xiao coaxed.
Yun Can’er closed her eyes and obeyed. Ning Xiao pressed her fingers to the girl’s temples, moving from the center of her forehead outward. As she applied a bit of pressure, a soft sigh escaped Yun Can’er’s lips. Looking at her, Ning Xiao felt a sense of fulfillment that words couldn’t describe.
Yun Can’er woke up in a daze, realizing she was in her own bed. She sat up and rubbed her eyes as memories of last night slowly returned. Her hand froze.
She remembered going to the gala with Ning Xiao. Within an hour, half a dozen men had tried to pursue Ning Xiao. Worst of all, Ning Xiao had promised not to leave her for more than five minutes, yet she broke that promise for Zhuang Yuzhen.
The thought of Zhuang Yuzhen—her former crush, made her heart feel tight with a dark, suffocating mood.
Then a rich heir had asked Ning Xiao to dance. In a fit of anger, she had dragged Ning Xiao away and accidentally drank half a glass of alcohol, thinking it was juice. She didn’t remember anything after that.
Ning Xiao must have brought her back and changed her clothes.
Yun Can’er looked down at her pajamas. Her face turned bright red as her fingers gripped the hem of her nightgown. If Ning Xiao changed my clothes, doesn’t that mean she saw everything?
