- Chapter 60 - Snow White and the Wicked Stepmother
Ning Xiao brought Yun Can’er to the company under the guise of her newly hired personal assistant. No one suspected that this was the legendary eldest miss of the Yun Group.
As usual, Yang Yuanqi was waiting outside the elevator. Ding! The elevator reached the top floor, and the doors slid open.
“Good morning, President Ning… Wait, huh?!” The smile on Yang Yuanqi’s face froze. Who was this girl following behind Ning Xiao pure, elegant, and as beautiful as a porcelain doll?
“President Ning, and this is?” Yang Yuanqi asked.
Ning Xiao gently pulled Yun Can’er in front of her. “Special Assistant Yang, this is Yun Can’er. I’ve hired her privately as my assistant.”
“Ah, Assistant Yun. Nice to meet you.” Surname Yun? Could she be a relative of the late CEO Yun? Though Yang Yuanqi was curious, he didn’t show it. He offered a warm, professional smile and extended his hand toward Yun Can’er.
In this unfamiliar environment, Yun Can’er’s courage failed her. She hovered close to Ning Xiao, eyes downcast, her lashes trembling like the wings of a butterfly in the wind.
Yang Yuanqi felt a wave of awkwardness. He wasn’t sure whether to keep his hand out or pull it back.
Ning Xiao patted Yun Can’er’s shoulder to soothe her. “Don’t be afraid. I’m right here.”
She then turned to Yang Yuanqi. “Can’er is a bit shy around strangers. I hope you don’t mind, Special Assistant Yang.”
Yang Yuanqi withdrew his hand, laughing it off. “Not at all, not at all! It’s perfectly normal to be a bit nervous during a first meeting.”
But it’s definitely not normal for a CEO’s assistant to refuse a handshake with the Special Assistant! He wondered what the real connection was between President Ning and this beautiful girl. He eventually decided that “Yun” was just a common surname and she likely had nothing to do with Yun Boyuan. After all, Ning Xiao held all the power now, and her position was still somewhat tenuous; bringing a member of the Yun family into the company would be a direct threat to her status.
Ning Xiao was far too smart to be that foolish.
Ning Xiao had Yang Yuanqi set up a desk and chair for Yun Can’er inside the CEO’s office. She then addressed him, “There’s a standard recruitment process in the company, so technically, I shouldn’t be hiring privately without going through HR.”
Yang Yuanqi quickly replied, “Don’t worry, President Ning. I’ll handle the communication with the Human Resources department!”
Ning Xiao smiled. “That’s not what I meant.”
She glanced at Yun Can’er, who was sitting obediently, a flash of doting affection crossing her eyes. “As you can see, Can’er is quite timid. In a new place with new people, she’s often too scared to speak. I’ve made her my assistant to help build her confidence. I will be paying her salary out of my own pocket.”
Yang Yuanqi found Yun Can’er’s identity more mysterious by the second. He hadn’t missed that look in Ning Xiao’s eyes.
Could Yun Can’er actually be Ning Xiao’s relative?
“President Ning, you are truly selfless. I’ll speak to HR. Yun Can’er will take one of the assistant slots, but her salary won’t be on the company books. HR won’t have any objections to that.”
Ning Xiao nodded. “Thank you for your hard work, Special Assistant Yang.”
“It’s an honor to work for you, President Ning! It’s no trouble at all!” Yang Yuanqi chirped.
Hearing Yang Yuanqi’s blatant flattery, Yun Can’er forgot to be nervous. She looked up at him in surprise, as if staring at a strange alien.
So, this is how employees talk to their bosses. She felt like she was learning something very important.
After Yang Yuanqi briefed Ning Xiao on the day’s schedule and left for HR, the tension finally drained from Yun Can’er’s body.
“President Ning, what do I need to do?” she whispered.
Ning Xiao looked up. “Bring your chair over and just watch me work.”
For some reason, Yun Can’er felt that Ning Xiao was different at the office compared to how she was at home. Though she still smiled, there was an added air of authority that made one instinctively want to follow her lead.
Yun Can’er obediently moved her chair next to Ning Xiao and sat down.
“Special Assistant Yang mentioned my schedule for today. How many items did you remember?” Ning Xiao asked, her gentle eyes encouraging.
Yun Can’er shook her head bashfully. “I… I don’t think I remembered any of them.”
They were sitting so close that her heart was fluttering. Even if she had remembered them a moment ago, she couldn’t recall a single thing now.
Unaware of the effect she was having, Ning Xiao continued, “It’s okay if you didn’t catch them. Take this sheet of paper and memorize it slowly. You can recite it back to me later.”
With a nod from Yun Can’er, Ning Xiao dove into her work.
However, Yun Can’er’s entire focus was on Ning Xiao. She couldn’t help but steal glances at her every other minute. Ning Xiao’s profile was stunning—she possessed a refined elegance, yet her features were breathtakingly vivid. Every time Ning Xiao looked up or blinked her long lashes, Yun Can’er felt her heart skip a beat.
An hour later, Ning Xiao finished reviewing the documents, signing the approved ones and sending back those that needed work. Finally, she had a moment to check on Yun Can’er’s progress.
She put down her pen and turned to see Yun Can’er staring intently at the schedule in her hands. She reached out and ruffled the girl’s long hair.
“Such a good girl, Can’er. Have you memorized it all?”
Yun Can’er, who had actually been lost in a daze admiring Ning Xiao’s side profile:
Oh no. She had spent the whole time looking at Ning Xiao and completely forgot to memorize the schedule! Her cheeks flushed crimson as she turned away in shame. “No… I’m too stupid.”
Ning Xiao was stunned for a moment. Looking at the three simple items on the schedule, her heart filled with pity for the girl.
“It’s not your fault. Don’t blame yourself,” Ning Xiao comforted her gently.
This only made Yun Can’er feel worse.
The female lead of a tragic novel not only has a miserable background but also a ‘slow’ brain, making it easier for the male lead to trick her… Ning Xiao was convinced that Yun Can’er’s inability to memorize the list was the fault of the original author.
“I’ll help you memorize it. Once you master the technique, it’s actually quite easy to memorize anything,” Ning Xiao said.
“Okay,” Yun Can’er nodded quickly. She wasn’t actually stupid. She would make sure to surprise Ning Xiao later.
Five minutes later, Yun Can’er recited the entire schedule perfectly. Ning Xiao looked at her with delight. “Can’er, you’re so clever! You learned it so quickly.”
Yun Can’er’s face turned pink, but she didn’t take all the credit. “It’s only because your method was so good that I could do it.”
Ning Xiao called me clever!
After a few days of accompanying Ning Xiao to work, Yun Can’er became more accustomed to the routine and bolder when speaking to strangers. Sometimes, she would even take the initiative to deliver documents to other departments. Ning Xiao was thrilled to see these positive changes.
One day, after reciting the schedule, Yun Can’er noticed that Ning Xiao was supposed to attend a business gala that evening. Following the words “Business Gala” was a long set of parentheses containing potential choices for Ning Xiao’s dance partner.
As Yun Can’er stared at the names of men she didn’t recognize, her chest felt tight, as if something were weighing her down.
When Ning Xiao returned from a meeting, she found Yun Can’er staring at the schedule with a look of pure misery, not even noticing she had entered. Ning Xiao walked over and glanced at the paper, seeing nothing out of the ordinary. She smiled and stroked Yun Can’er’s hair. “Who upset you? Your little pout is so big I could hang a jar of oil on it.”
Upon hearing this, Yun Can’er immediately reached up to touch her lips. “I’m not pouting!” They felt perfectly normal to her.
“The point,” Ning Xiao said, “is the first part of the sentence. Is someone making you angry?”
Yun Can’er lowered her head and remained silent. No one was bothering her; she was just suddenly miserable at the thought of Ning Xiao dancing with another man.
“Even though my dad is dead…” Yun Can’er muttered under her breath.
“What?” Ning Xiao didn’t catch that. She leaned down close to Yun Can’er to hear better.
“President Ning, this file…” Yang Yuanqi burst into the room, only to freeze mid-sentence. From his angle, it looked as though Ning Xiao was leaning down to kiss Yun Can’er. His mind went blank as he stared at them, completely forgetting what he was going to say.
Yun Can’er scurried back to her own desk with the schedule. Ning Xiao sat down behind her desk and asked, “What about the file? Let me see.”
It took Yang Yuanqi a moment to recover, his face turning inexplicably red. He walked over, stammering, “Th—the data in this file has a s—slight issue. It needs to be recalculated. I can bring it back for your signature this afternoon.”
Ning Xiao took the file, scanned the figures, and handed it back. “Mhm. Have it on my desk by 3:00 PM.”
“Right away, President Ning! I’ll go tell the R&D department now.”
As Yang Yuanqi turned to leave, Ning Xiao suddenly called out to him. His heart raced as that “beautiful” image flashed in his mind again: the stunning, tall woman leaning down to kiss the pure, petite girl.
Stop thinking about it! Thinking makes my face turn red! He tried to shake the image away.
“President Ning, do you have further instructions?”
Ning Xiao said with concern, “Special Assistant Yang, your face is very red. Do you have a fever? You should rest if you’re sick. The company isn’t too busy lately; I can give you a couple of days off.”
Yang Yuanqi’s heart skipped a beat!
Here it comes! President Ning is trying to buy me off with a vacation! She probably doesn’t want me to tell anyone what I just saw. Then again, who would have thought Ning Xiao liked women? She even brought the girl she likes into the office as an assistant.
He compared her to the “faint-hearted” Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, who neglected his duties for his beloved concubine! If the rest of the company found out, it would cause a massive stir and might even threaten her position.
With a complicated heart, Yang Yuanqi quickly replied, “No need, President Ning! I just felt a sudden heat; it’s not a fever. I’m in great health. I can definitely work for you until I retire!”
Yang Yuanqi cleverly used another way to express his absolute loyalty. Even without a vacation, he would serve Ning Xiao as his boss for a lifetime!
