The Villainess’s Darling [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 50
When Yun Can’er received the call from Yao Xiangying, Ning Xiao wasn’t by her side. She was no longer the helpless little girl who could be bled dry by her family; she decided to handle this herself.
“We can’t settle this over the phone,” Can’er said calmly. “How about we meet in person?”
Yao Xiangying was instantly suspicious. “Don’t you try anything funny!”
“Mom,” Can’er continued, “I’ve only done two dramas. My total pay was barely over a million yuan. After the company’s cut and expenses, I only have about 300,000 in hand. I can’t produce forty million, but if you meet me, I might have another way to get you the money.”
Yao Xiangying turned to Yun Yi. “Should we meet?”
Yun Yi nodded. “Yes! But we pick the location.”
The phone was on speaker, so Can’er heard him clearly. “Mom, Dad, let me pick the place. I’m quite famous now; if someone recognizes us and finds out about this ‘transaction,’ it’ll be bad for everyone. You know how those paparazzi are—they’ll twist the truth and write anything.”
The couple remembered the fallout from the interview after Can’er’s graduation all too well. It had forced them to sell their house and move cities. Yao Xiangying panicked. “Fine, fine! You pick the place!”
Back at home, Ning Xiao finished her work and checked Can’er’s schedule before heading to the bedroom. She found Can’er staring dazed at her phone. A quick glance showed a ten-minute call with an unknown number.
“Can’er, what’s on your mind?”
Can’er snapped back to reality and tucked her phone away. “Nothing, just a spam call. I blocked them.”
Ning Xiao studied her. Can’er’s body stiffened; she was a terrible liar, and her face began to redden. “Why are you staring at me?” she whispered.
Ning Xiao sat beside her and lifted her chin. “You’re hiding something.”
“I’m not!” Can’er’s eyes darted everywhere but at Ning Xiao. “We’re together every day. You know everything I do.”
Ning Xiao leaned closer. “Really?”
“Really,” Can’er squeaked.
Ning Xiao let go and started unbuttoning her shirt. “So, you’re lying.”
Can’er blinked, confused. It was only 8:00 PM. “What are you doing? It’s not even bedtime.”
“Well,” Ning Xiao said casually, “my wife is keeping secrets. I can’t bear to scold or hit her, so I’ll just keep going until she talks.” She shot a meaningful, lingering look at Can’er’s collarbone.
Can’er dove under the duvet. “We just did it this morning! It’s not good for your health to be so… frequent.”
“Don’t worry,” Ning Xiao teased. “Our check-ups were perfect. We’re healthy enough to go for three days and nights.”
As the clothes kept coming off, Can’er finally broke. “Okay, okay! Stop, you’ll catch a cold!” She scrambled out of bed to wrap Ning Xiao in a housecoat before sighing. “I wasn’t trying to hide it forever. I just wanted to see if I could handle it myself. You’re so busy, I didn’t want to bother you.”
Ning Xiao kissed her. “Telling me and solving it yourself aren’t mutually exclusive. Tell me what happened.”
Ning Xiao had already guessed. The only thing that would make Can’er hesitate was the Yun family. And if those pests were back, Xu Chun was likely behind it.
“My mom called,” Can’er admitted. “She wants money. Forty million.”
“And you didn’t wonder how she got your private number?” Ning Xiao ruffled her hair. “The person who gave it to her is someone who hates you. There aren’t many of those in this circle.”
“Xu Chun?” Can’er’s eyes widened in anger. “She really is a pest!”
The next day, Ling Jie accompanied Can’er to a private club. When they entered the VIP room, Yao Xiangying and Yun Yi were already there.
“Dad, Mom. Long time no see,” Can’er said flatly.
“Long time?” Yao Xiangying snapped. “I thought you’d forgotten the parents who raised you!”
Can’er looked at Yun Yi, who sat silently. She felt a surge of disgust. As a child, she had hated her mother’s violence, but she realized now that her father was worse. He only let the abuse happen when he was displeased, using her mother as a blunt instrument while he kept his hands clean.
Ling Jie stepped between them like a mountain. “Madam, please calm down.”
“This is a family matter,” Yao Xiangying barked at Can’er. “Why did you bring an outsider?”
“Ling Jie is my assistant. She knows more about my life than you do. She’s not an outsider,” Can’er replied.
When Yao Xiangying demanded the forty million again, Ling Jie nearly lost her temper. “Are you insane? Can’er works her heart out, and you just want to bleed her dry?”
The argument escalated until Ling Jie tried to lead Can’er out. Terrified of losing their payday, Yun Yi finally dropped his act and scolded his wife, forcing her to apologize to bring Can’er back to the table.
“I don’t have forty million,” Can’er said once they settled. “But I know someone who can give it to you.”
“That works!” Yao Xiangying chirped, assuming she meant Ning Xiao.
“But first,” Can’er leaned in, “I need to know who put you up to this. I don’t want to be bitten twice.”
After some pressure, they admitted a woman had been calling them. Can’er snatched Yao Xiangying’s phone and dialed the number.
“Did she agree?” a familiar voice asked on the other end.
“Xu Chun,” Can’er said, her voice like ice. “Or should I call you Xu Stupid? Because that was a moronic move.”
Xu Chun hissed through the phone, “So what if you found out? Those parents are a stain you’ll never wash off!” She slammed the phone down.
Can’er turned to the couple with a chilling smile. “I’ve found the person who can give you the money. It’s not Ning Xiao. It’s your biological daughter.”
The couple turned pale. “What are you talking about?”
“Think about it,” Can’er said. “The woman who called you is the real daughter you swapped me with. She’s currently the heiress of the Xu family. They are richer than the Nings. Why ask for forty million when you can get four hundred million from her to keep her secret? Without your ‘help’ back then, she wouldn’t be a princess today, would she?”
The fallout was swift and brutal.
Yao Xiangying and Yun Yi, driven by greed, contacted Xu Chun. They demanded four hundred million yuan. Xu Chun, trapped and desperate, took a DNA test and confirmed the horrifying truth: she was the child of these “crude” people.
Rather than pay, Xu Chun’s mind snapped. She manipulated her former assistant the muscular man who was still obsessed with her, into orchestrating a “traffic accident.”
A week later, headlines exploded: “Xu Chun Arrested for the Murder of Yun Can’er’s Parents!”
The muscular assistant initially tried to take the fall, but when the police brought his wife and child to the station, his conscience broke. He confessed that Xu Chun had masterminded the hit.
The Xu family was humiliated. They spent a fortune trying to save her, eventually paying off Can’er’s two older sisters, Baiwei and Xiaoyan, to sign a letter of leniency. Can’er herself played the part of the grieving, fragile victim perfectly, winning the nation’s sympathy.
Xu Chun was sentenced to twenty years without the possibility of a full committal. The Xu family, upon discovering she wasn’t their blood, abandoned her entirely. Yu Xinglong broke the engagement immediately.
A year later, Yun Can’er stood on an international stage, becoming the youngest person ever to win a Best Actress award at the prestigious film festival.
Shortly after, she and Ning Xiao held a magnificent wedding abroad, broadcast live to millions. As they stood before the priest, Ning Xiao kissed her deeply.
When they pulled apart, Can’er looked into Ning Xiao’s eyes. “Ningning, in the next life, I want to marry you again.”
Ning Xiao smiled. “It’s a deal.”
