- Chapter 5 - The Puppy is Angry
As soon as these words were uttered, the entire venue erupted.
Song Zhi, who had already been preparing to leave, paused in her tracks. She abruptly looked up, her brows furrowed tightly.
What was going on?
Hadn’t Xu You and Fu Nian just been arguing moments ago?
Why now…?
Hearing this announcement, Fu Nian laughed. He tilted his head to look at Xu You, his voice completely laced with indulgence. “Youyou, is this a little surprise you prepared for me?”
“Rejecting me on one hand, while announcing our engagement in a public place like this without my consent on the other?”
“How long have you been planning this?”
Xu You’s brows remained tightly knit, her tone incredibly cold. “It’s just a child making trouble and talking nonsense.”
“And don’t call me by such a disgusting nickname.”
The smile on the corners of Fu Nian’s lips vanished. He let out a soft snort. “Saying all this now is nothing more than a deathbed struggle. After all, everyone is already convinced that you will definitely marry me.”
By this time, quite a few people had already walked over to congratulate them.
“Congratulations, President Fu.”
“Congratulations, congratulations.”
Xu Jie and Xu Xi arrived as well. Xu Jie’s face was covered in smiles as he said to Xu You, “Youyou, you certainly hid this well. You didn’t even tell your own father about something this important.”
The nickname sent a wave of disgust through Xu You. She said icily, “We are not engaged. Xu Mingwang is talking nonsense.”
Her voice wasn’t particularly loud, but it was clear enough for everyone around them to hear.
Xu Jie’s face fell slightly, unable to maintain his composure. He let out a warning cough. “Xiao You, don’t throw a childish tantrum.”
Xu You knew that if there weren’t so many people around, Xu Jie’s palm would have probably already struck her face.
“I’m not joking. I don’t like Fu Nian, and I will never agree to be engaged to…” Before the word “him” could leave her mouth, Xu You’s face was slapped to the side by Xu Jie’s hand.
A collective gasp echoed through the crowd.
Song Zhi was absolutely furious. She bolted to her feet and strode over there, so fast that even the quick handed Song Xian couldn’t hold her back.
Xu You felt a wave of dizziness wash over her. Just as she was about to collapse, she felt someone wrap an arm around her shoulder. The person carried a pleasant, comforting scent of perfume.
A familiar voice rang out, trembling with rage. “What right do you have to hit her?”
It was Song Zhi.
Song Zhi was about to explode with anger.
This dead old man actually dared to hit Xu You.
Xu Jie was also taken aback when he saw her. “This is our family matter! What does it have to do with you?”
As he spoke, his eyes darted around before he flashed a mocking sneer. “Oh, I get it. You came here to cause trouble on purpose to ruin Xiao You and Xiao Nian’s marriage so you could seize the chance to step in, right?”
In reality, Xu Jie wasn’t entirely wrong. Song Zhi was indeed thinking exactly that.
That way, her chances of pursuing Xu You would increase significantly.
Song Zhi countered righteously, “How is it none of my business? You’ve knocked her unconscious! I can call the police right now!”
Xu Jie: “?”
Knocked unconscious?
Had he really used that much force just now?
However, he quickly grew anxious. Xu You’s body was genuinely very frail, and he hadn’t held back his strength when he slapped her just now. Could he really have caused serious harm? If Fu Nian got angry over this, wouldn’t their business cooperation fall through?
Xu You’s head happened to be pressed against Song Zhi’s chest. She could hear Song Zhi’s heart pounding in an erratic, rapid rhythm, it seemed she really was furious.
Speaking of which, it was quite ironic. In the end, it was Song Zhi, the person who supposedly disliked her the most, who rushed forward to protect her. In her childhood, she had been proud and arrogant, never needing anyone’s help. Later, when her health failed, she was cast aside like worthless dross, leaving no one to shield her.
Yet right now, the warm touch of the person beside her gave her an illusory sense of security.
Was this what it felt like to be protected?
Or did Song Zhi have some other ulterior motive?
“I can call the police right now!”
Hearing these words, Xu You pondered for a split second, and then her face turned deathly pale as she genuinely fainted into Song Zhi’s arms.
Seeing that the person had actually been harmed by his action, Xu Jie felt he could no longer save face amidst the frequent whispers and murmurs of the crowd. Unable to bear the embarrassment, he swung his sleeve and walked away directly.
Xu Mingwang was also completely bewildered, clearly, he had not anticipated this outcome at all. The reason he had dared to blurt out the engagement news earlier was because he knew Fu Nian was still infatuated with Xu You, combined with his assumption that Xu You wouldn’t resist. He had wanted to use public pressure to force Xu You into agreeing.
This way, he could marry off this cheap older sister while simultaneously helping the company tide over its difficulties and earning his father’s appreciation.
How… did it turn out like this?
Only then did Fu Nian reach out, intending to take Xu You over, but his hand was unexpectedly smacked away by Song Zhi.
For the first time, he saw Song Zhi giving him a cold shoulder. Stripped of her past affection and flattery, her face now held nothing but wariness and loathing. Her tone was so cold it felt as if it could drop icicles:
“Don’t touch her.”
“You don’t have the right.”
In the past, these were words Song Zhi would absolutely never dare, nor ever choose, to say to him.
Fu Nian froze, actually frozen in place as he watched Song Zhi support Xu You and leave.
Looking at their retreating figures, he knit his brows imperceptibly. It felt as though something was slipping entirely out of his control.
