Chapter 8: What Do You Want?
Zhong Shengwan: “You mean, you… accept me?”
What a joke!
“Yes. We can give it a try.” For some inexplicable reason—perhaps because Zhong Shengwan’s face didn’t show the expected surprise and excitement—Chu Jinchen added: “Grandfather means the same. If we are together, he will definitely be very happy.”
Zhong Shengwan: …I am very unhappy. Do you really think you’re all that? To just grandly tell me to move in—that’s not how you ask a favor.
He complained in his mind, but he couldn’t say it out loud.
It was one thing that the man had a sick relative, but furthermore, Chu Jinchen was suspicious and held grudges. It’s better to offend a gentleman than a petty man—and this overbearing CEO protagonist, who bankrupted people at the drop of a hat in the original book, was far scarier than a petty man.
He mobilized his acting skills, showing a mix of concern and hope: “But what about you? Are you happy?”
Chu Jinchen said while pouring water: “That is not important.”
Right now, nothing was more vital than Grandfather’s mood. He had been raised by his grandfather since childhood and their bond was deep; he didn’t want his grandfather to leave with regrets.
Zhong Shengwan looked at the man before him. To sacrifice his own feelings for a relative seemed quite manly and handsome on the surface.
But planning to drag someone else into the sacrifice—that was inhumane.
He said with certainty: “Then that means you aren’t happy.”
Chu Jinchen raised his eyes: “You are unwilling?”
As a man who had fought for a place in the business world at a young age—one who could even be called a king—his eyes were deep and calm, carrying a tangible sense of scrutiny and pressure.
Zhong Shengwan was like a tightly wound film reel; his nerves were taut, but his output was methodical. He displayed the stubbornness of someone who knows they are hitting a brick wall but still wants to try: “I want a wholehearted love. Can you do that? Can you announce to the whole world that you love me? Swear to be with me for a lifetime, and from now on, have no contact with Jiang Yu—or any other scallions, ginger, or garlic? If I say I don’t like someone, you ignore them. Can you?”
With every sentence he spoke, Chu Jinchen’s face grew a degree colder.
As expected. Chu Jinchen was proud and conceited; he loathed being bound and demanded of. He could only last with the type of person who was willing to stay low and carefully adapt—a role personified by Jiang Yu.
The conversation collapsed right then and there. In Chu Jinchen’s original words: “Xiao Wan, you are taking an inch and wanting a mile.”
Zhong Shengwan watched Chu Jinchen’s departing back. His expression was calm, lacking the unrequited love he had displayed just moments ago.
Another day of explosive acting. Perfect!
Returning home that evening, Father Zhong mentioned he planned to visit Old Master Chu in the hospital tomorrow. Old Master Chu had originally been recuperating at home, but now that things had been laid bare with Chu Jinchen, he simply moved into the hospital, where everything was more convenient.
Zhong Shengwan listened silently for a while, then listed several types of fruit and pastries for Father Zhong to remember to bring.
He remembered Old Master Chu loved those.
He was a very loving and lively old man who doted on “Zhong Shengwan.” Although that affection was mixed with some adult calculations of interest, kindness was kindness; it couldn’t be erased.
As for Zhong Shengwan himself, he decided it was better not to go.
If he went and Old Master Chu asked him to agree to the engagement on the spot, should he agree or not? If he didn’t, what if the old man was stimulated by the rejection…
Better to just not go and end it cleanly.
Father Zhong looked at his significantly more mature younger son: “Zhong Zhong, such a rare opportunity, are you really unwilling?”
Didn’t he like the guy? Why not use the opportunity when it was right in front of him.
Right now, as long as Zhong Shengwan nodded, everything would be set.
Zhong Shengwan shook his head: “My liking him is my business; it’s upright. If he doesn’t like me and I insist on forcing it, that’s just being desperate. Forget it.”
Father Zhong patted Zhong Shengwan’s head: “Papa understands. As long as you are happy.”
Having cleared things up, when Father Zhong visited Old Master Chu at the hospital, his words were a bit vague: “The two of us old guys mean well, but regarding the youngsters’ business, let them talk it out themselves.”
Old Master Chu smiled: “That’s true.”
When Chu Jinchen came to the hospital after work that evening, he was hit by a flying orange.
Old Master Chu still looked quite vigorous. When his head didn’t hurt, he was no different from a normal person and could chase Chu Jinchen around with his cane.
Chu Jinchen silently took a few hits to let the old man vent his anger before grabbing the cane and helping him back to the hospital bed to lie down: “Grandpa, what is it this time?”
Old Master Chu: “Zhong Zhong is such a good child, why won’t you see sense!”
Chu Jinchen thought of the things Zhong Shengwan had said. It seemed the previous coldness was indeed just playing hard to get: “I don’t like that type!”
Old Master Chu: “Then what type do you like?”
Chu Jinchen didn’t speak.
He didn’t know himself. In any case, it wouldn’t be a spendthrift playboy like Zhong Shengwan. If the boy’s character was upright, he might respect him, but he was overbearing and arrogant… in short, it wouldn’t work.
The grandfather and grandson were at odds, and both stopped talking.
Chu Jinchen peeled an apple for Old Master Chu, diced it, sliced a banana, and peeled some grapes. He placed them on a plate by the bedside, washed his hands in the restroom, and then left the hospital.
He disliked being forced. He couldn’t get angry at his grandfather, so his impression of Zhong Shengwan became even worse. Along the way, his grandfather’s roar seemed to echo in his head: “If you don’t get married, do you want me to die without closing my eyes?”
Returning home and opening the door, the lights were all bright.
Jiang Yu, sitting on the sofa, stood up: “Big Brother Chu, you’re back! The weather is cold, why not have a bowl of porridge first to warm your stomach?” He took Chu Jinchen’s coat, hung it up, and hurried to the kitchen to bring out the porridge.
Looking at the busy Jiang Yu, Chu Jinchen’s heart stirred: “Xiao Yu, can you do me a favor?”
He thought that although Jiang Yu didn’t have a background as good as Zhong Shengwan’s, he had proper looks, a good character, and was kind and simple. He should be able to win the old man’s heart.
Jiang Yu doubted if he was in a dream. Looking at the handsome Chu Jinchen, he was stunned and speechless.
Chu Jinchen explained: “Don’t misunderstand, and don’t be afraid. It’s just a pretense. This can be counted as one of your job duties; I can pay you double your salary.”
Jiang Yu woke up from his dream: “I am willing, Big Brother Chu.”
He responded as if answering a solemn and loving proposal; his cheeks were tinged with a faint pink. He thought to himself how wonderful it would be if all of this were real.
However, his current life was already as beautiful as a dream.
Because of Chu Jinchen’s proposal, Jiang Yu suffered from insomnia that night and later had a dream.
In the dream, Chu Jinchen really proposed to him, and he really became the other master of the Chu Group. Even a pampered young master like Zhong Shengwan wouldn’t dare provoke him at banquets anymore, but would instead avoid him.
Zhong Shengwan, who was being thought of in someone’s dream, lied once again.
He told Father Zhong and Big Brother Zhong that he was going out to sea with Jin Yundong, but instead, he took a plane to the production set of Desert Smoke, which was already in preparation.
He didn’t tell Jin Yundong, fearing that his childhood friend, who protected him like a mother hen, would cause trouble.
Tao Jian personally came to pick up Zhong Shengwan. After much inquiry, he had learned about Zhong Shengwan’s family background. Looking at Zhong Shengwan’s outstanding appearance, he thought to himself that if his acting was even passable, he would keep him.
Compared to a single role, a person like Zhong Shengwan was a treasure trove. If used well, who knows how much trouble it would save.
He also remembered the brooch the other had given him. It was a top-tier luxury brand with strictly controlled channels—you couldn’t buy it even if you wanted to. He could wear it to an event later; it would surely overshadow everyone, and a trending search would be guaranteed.
Most importantly, this Young Master Zhong giving him things couldn’t be just for a role, right? Was he a fan, or perhaps…
The opportunity was not to be missed. Even if he had to offer himself… it wasn’t a losing business.
With his mind made up, as night fell, Tao Jian took the script and went to knock on Zhong Shengwan’s door.
At first glance, he was dressed neatly, but his top was a low-cut knit sweater in pure black, which highlighted his physique—the kind that would make tens of millions of fans scream.
At the same time, a black sedan drove toward the hotel entrance.
The man’s features were very handsome. In the flickering light, he had a cold silence that seemed about to merge with the night. He came to ask the question that had gone unanswered that day:
“What do you want?”
