Chapter 13: Orchid Street
After catching Zhong Shengwan acting improperly, Jiang Yu spent the entire night in a state of agitation and anger.
He had originally intended to tell Chu Jinchen about it in person, but he simply couldn’t hold it in. In the end, he sent the photo directly: Big Brother Chu, I saw this by accident. Young Master Zhong might not be at all what you imagine him to be. I don’t want you or Grandpa to be sad.
He had a vague feeling that Chu Jinchen might follow Old Master Chu’s wishes and choose Zhong Shengwan; after all, Chu Jinchen rarely came home these days.
But no matter what, it shouldn’t be Zhong Shengwan.
In Jiang Yu’s heart, Chu Jinchen—who appeared cold and ruthless but was actually warm-hearted and tolerant—deserved a worthy person to accompany him.
That person would know his goodness and his hard work; they would leave a light on and a bowl of soup for him at night, even if their family background wasn’t great or they weren’t rich enough.
The Chu family was already rich enough, wasn’t it?
In short, he shouldn’t be like Zhong Shengwan, pampered by his family to the point of needing others to take care of him, even spending nights out amidst the bright lights and wine.
He waited anxiously for Chu Jinchen’s reply.
Would Big Brother Chu be grateful to him?
Even if he wasn’t grateful—even if he thought Jiang Yu was being meddlesome—Jiang Yu felt he had a responsibility and obligation to worry about Chu Jinchen’s affairs. After all, if it weren’t for Chu Jinchen, how would he have had the chance to get into university?
After leaving the hospital, Chu Jinchen attended a dinner with a partner and drank some wine. He was about thirty percent drunk. When he received Jiang Yu’s message, he was confused for a moment, but clicking on the image, he found it somewhat ironic.
He had thought something serious had happened.
Perhaps it was the alcohol talking, but Chu Jinchen zoomed in on the picture. In the deep night, amidst the brilliant lights, a masked Zhong Shengwan had his head tilted up; those eyes were dazzling, as if they contained a sea of stars.
This Zhong Shengwan had a very gentle flavor to him.
It was something strange and moving, something he had never seen before.
His heart stirred inexplicably, and he suddenly felt a surge of dislike toward the man standing opposite Zhong Shengwan. Who was this person, to make Zhong Shengwan show such an expression…
By the time Chu Jinchen realized it, the call had already connected:
Zhong Shengwan: “Hello?”
Chu Jinchen cleared his throat: “What are you doing?”
Zhong Shengwan: “At home.”
Chu Jinchen: “Didn’t go out to play tonight?”
Driven by a strange intuition, Zhong Shengwan thought that Chu Jinchen didn’t seem like the type to care about his whereabouts for no reason. After two seconds of silence: “I went out, Orchid Street. It was too noisy and boring.”
Chu Jinchen: “That place is too chaotic. Go there less in the future.”
He wanted to ask who the man in the photo was, but that level of inquiry exceeded his habits. He had a subconscious resistance; he didn’t want Zhong Shengwan to get smug by misunderstanding certain signals, so he didn’t ask.
Zhong Shengwan: “Okay.” He had promised He Yingnong he wouldn’t go back, and he was a man of his word.
Chu Jinchen felt that today’s Zhong Shengwan was exceptionally pleasing to the eye, even if it was just over the phone. He added: “I called to tell you that Grandpa wants to be discharged. Will you come over tomorrow to see him?”
The two had already reached an agreement regarding the engagement.
When discussing this, Chu Jinchen suggested that Zhong Shengwan move directly into the Chu residence to accompany Grandpa Chu, but Zhong Shengwan refused, saying he was afraid of blowing their cover.
Chu Jinchen thought about it and dropped the matter.
He didn’t love Zhong Shengwan anyway. If Grandpa noticed something was wrong, wouldn’t he worry even more?
The next day, Zhong Shengwan went to the Chu house and had a meal with Grandpa Chu.
Looking at his biological grandson and his favorite junior sitting on his left and right—one handsome and upright, the other obedient and smart—Old Master Chu felt his life was finally complete.
After the meal, Zhong Shengwan and Chu Jinchen went to the garden to talk.
The two maintained the same harmonious atmosphere they had at the dinner table, until the butler, who was secretly trailing them, went gleefully to report the good news to Old Master Chu.
Zhong Shengwan told Chu Jinchen about his acting.
He hadn’t told his father or brother about this yet. To him, this was a “minefield” task, so he planned to let Chu Jinchen handle it.
Might as well use every resource available.
He would make Grandpa Chu happy, and Chu Jinchen would convince his father and brother to let him pursue his career.
Various plants were growing in the courtyard, well-tended and clean; it was cold but not desolate.
Chu Jinchen didn’t expect Zhong Shengwan to be so persistent about acting: “Back then, I only talked about a collaboration with Liu Xingli; nothing happened.”
So, there was really no need to do this because of that…
Liu Xingli had endorsed Chu family products; he was a first-line artist who once had rumors with Chu Jinchen.
Zhong Shengwan then said: “I was indeed very sad for a while back then, but because of that, I learned a lot about the entertainment industry and somehow fell in love with acting.”
After a pause, he said: “Big Brother Chu, I’ve never asked you for anything. For the sake of my agreeing to the contract engagement, help me.”
In this season where all things wither, the youth’s features were like a painting, full of vitality—a scenery no one could refuse.
Chu Jinchen: “Alright.”
This was a rare moment of peaceful coexistence for the two.
Chu Jinchen plucked a fallen leaf from Zhong Shengwan’s shoulder, thinking that if Zhong Shengwan was always this obedient and sensible, he wouldn’t dislike him so much.
Later that evening, Chu Jinchen received a call from Jiang Yu. The background noise on the other end was very chaotic: “Big Brother Chu, save me… Let go of me!”
Chu Jinchen’s expression darkened: “Xiao Yu, where are you?”
He looked at Jiang Yu as a younger brother. Unfortunately, this hardworking, kind, noble, and somewhat tactless boy always seemed to have a difficult fate.
That night, Chu Jinchen trashed a bar on Orchid Street.
The big boss behind the establishment knew who Chu Jinchen was and didn’t dare stop him, respectfully seeing the two “ancestors” off.
Afterward, he immediately held a staff meeting.
A waiter who shared a shift with Jiang Yu said: “Boss, maybe it’s not entirely the customers’ fault. The way that Jiang Yu looks at customers is like… like he’s part of an anti-vice task force. Good-tempered guests don’t mind, but if he runs into someone in a bad mood…”
People come to these places to spend money on entertainment. If you, a worker, act like everyone sitting there is trash, aren’t you just asking for trouble?
The Boss: “…”
On Jiang Yu’s side, he promised Chu Jinchen he wouldn’t go back to work at Orchid Street, and he refused the extra money Chu Jinchen offered: “I’ll take what’s mine, but I don’t want what isn’t.”
He then went to the kitchen to make egg noodles for Chu Jinchen as a late-night snack: “Big Brother Chu, you’re right. That place is too chaotic… By the way, regarding Young Master Zhong… even though he looks down on me, I still want to say, if you have the chance, tell him not to go there anymore.”
As he spoke, he carefully watched Chu Jinchen’s expression. Surely Big Brother Chu must loathe someone like Zhong Shengwan, who only knows how to indulge in such dissolute playboy behavior?
