Chapter 10: I Promise You.
After a moment of silence, He Yingnong spoke: “I’m sorry, but I have no interest in the intersection of emotions and the physical body. Are there any other options?”
Feeling that the other man’s aura was a bit dangerous, Zhong Shengwan quit while he was ahead: “Yes, there are.”
No wonder the book says he remained a bachelor until the end of his life; it turns out he had firmed up his resolve to be a monk this early on. With that face and that body, it was truly a waste of God’s gifts.
Even if it were just acting, it would be nice.
But on second thought, He Yingnong created such a vast family business in his lifetime that when people mentioned him later, they revered him enough to simply call him “That Person.”
Perhaps He Yingnong creating a business empire was the same as Zhong Shengwan wanting a place in the entertainment industry.
In that sense, they were kindred spirits.
He Yingnong looked over. He had a very steady quality about him, like an immovable mountain that made people dare not offend him, yet also made them feel at ease.
Zhong Shengwan held his teacup, his gaze falling on the ripples in the water. His mind was wandering, but he tried his best to appear a bit dejected: “Everyone says I’m a dandy. You’re different; I know who you are. Many people fear you, and even more admire you and want to be you. They say that ‘he who touches vermilion becomes red’; let’s be friends. That way, even if I’m not a brilliant young talent, at least having a friend like you makes me look not so bad, right?”
Feelings can be nurtured. He was willing to become an ordinary but long-standing presence in the villain’s camp. If one day things with Chu Jinchen… this would be his final backup plan.
The He Yingnong he knew was extremely, exceptionally protective of his own.
He Yingnong looked at the youth’s gently trembling eyelashes—fragile and beautiful. But would a truly fragile person speak such a long, methodical paragraph?
Most importantly, the boy wasn’t afraid of him. In fact, it was as if he had been observing him from the shadows for a long time; there was a peculiar sense of familiarity and closeness toward him.
Admire him… did those people include the boy himself?
He simply asked: “Anything else?”
Zhong Shengwan: “If one day I need help—I mean if… it would be even better if you could help me.”
He Yingnong: “I promise you.”
Both sides understood that this “help” was definitely not the ordinary kind, and both accepted the outcome.
After the brief questioning, He Yingnong stood up.
As he left in his car, he gave an order: “Look into whether Zhong Shengwan has caused any trouble lately, or if anyone else holds any leverage over him.”
Liusheng, who was driving, acknowledged the command and asked: “Young Master, if there really is something…”
He Yingnong: “Clean it up.”
Liusheng: Understood. That Little Young Master Zhong is one of our own.
But… why?
It was… quite sudden. Though, if you just looked at the face, maybe it wasn’t so sudden after all.
In fact, He Yingnong had already sent people to investigate.
The people from the old residence had indeed gone to the clubhouse. That day, Zhong Shengwan was there celebrating a friend’s birthday; he must have overheard the matter of the brakes being tampered with then.
To prevent Zhong Shengwan from being retaliated against by the people from the old residence, He Yingnong never mentioned to a third party that it was Zhong Shengwan who warned him.
After He Yingnong left, Zhong Shengwan had a good night’s sleep.
Breakfast was the hotel buffet. When he ran into Tao Jian, he beamed with a smile that was familiar and close: “Teacher Tao, thank you for helping me rehearse last night. I learned a lot.”
Tao Jian, who had spent a long time using concealer to hide the dark circles under his eyes, acted like a big brother and encouraged: “Don’t mention it. Young Master Zhong is naturally gifted; you can do anything well.”
Actually, “naturally gifted” wasn’t enough to describe him. He could manipulate hearts, change faces as fast as flipping a book, and was extremely talented at acting—he was a monster!
With these conditions, even without a massive family fortune, he would have made it in the industry sooner or later.
It was as if last night never happened. The two had a friendly encounter and then went their separate ways.
Tao Jian’s manager met up with his artist, glanced at Zhong Shengwan in the distance, and said pointedly: “Well?” Surely he was easy to handle.
Tao Jian: “Brother, from now on, we just need to respect that one. As for anything else, don’t even think about it.”
Manager: “What do you mean?”
Tao Jian shook his head with a lingering fear: “That’s not a ‘silly white sweet,’ that’s a man-eating flower.”
He had only said he was going to the bathroom, and the other guy was able to open the door… just wait until he got older. However, this kind of embarrassing matter wasn’t something he could detail.
Manager: “How is his acting?”
If they couldn’t cling to the “thigh,” forget it—there were plenty of thighs in this circle, it’s just that some “meat” didn’t taste very good. The key was that the company had invested a lot in the movie…
Tao Jian: “Very good.”
The manager looked suspicious: “Did you drop some leverage into his hands?” It wasn’t that rich kids didn’t enter the circle for fun, but setting aside looks, that kind of acting… usually required an empty stomach to watch.
After finishing his meal, Zhong Shengwan went back to his room to practice expressions in the mirror. When it was time, he went to the audition venue to wait.
There were quite a few people auditioning.
He stood there alone and was approached by several managers. Every time he said he was an artist under Yunxiao Entertainment, the other party stopped pestering him.
Yunxiao Entertainment was a company under Jin Yundong’s family, currently managed by Jin Yundong himself. With the Jin family backing it, the company was powerful, wealthy, and famously “not short of cash.”
When it was Zhong Shengwan’s turn, he did two takes in a row and signed the contract on the spot.
There were several artists behind him. After being notified that the roles had been filled, some refused to leave and circled the director. The looks they gave Zhong Shengwan were enough to devour him.
Zhong Shengwan didn’t care. He only asked for a video of his audition after signing the contract; because of Tao Jian, getting it went very smoothly.
Better safe than sorry.
The artists auditioning today all had names and reputations. He was a newcomer; if any unpleasant rumors spread, this would be his best clarification.
Tao Jian looked at his manager: See? Isn’t he amazing? Good acting, sharp mind—it’s like he’s rolled through the industry eight hundred times; he doesn’t step into a single pit.
The manager felt both regretful and admiring: “He’s much stronger than you were at the start.”
After the audition ended, Zhong Shengwan returned to Haicheng, only to be caught at the airport by Jin Yundong.
Jin Yundong had just received the news and was scared out of his wits. He grabbed Zhong Shengwan’s shoulders and shook him hard: “Do you have any idea how messy production sets are? With a face like yours, aren’t you afraid of your ‘butt’ hurting?!”
Zhong Shengwan: “I know, I know. Didn’t I go under your banner? Which of Yunxiao’s artists would anyone dare touch?”
In fact, he knew exactly what he was doing. He had already waded through the pits and bumps of the entertainment industry; it was all small stuff. It was just that rebirth was his biggest secret, so he couldn’t explain.
Jin Yundong paced in circles: “Wealth moves hearts, and beauty isn’t far behind. You really are…”
He couldn’t get through to him!
If something really happened, if some lust-crazed person came along, it would be too late for everything!
The things he had seen… forget it, they were too dirty and he was afraid of scaring Zhong Shengwan. He was suffocating with worry but ultimately didn’t say it. He only ordered Zhong Shengwan not to act alone ever again.
Zhong Shengwan knew Jin Yundong was worried about him. He didn’t argue throughout the lecture. Finally, after swearing several oaths and contributing a home-cooked meal, he managed to soothe his childhood friend’s irritability.
To cook, they couldn’t expose the trip to the production set yet, so the two went to the “little nest” Jin Yundong had bought for himself.
Jin Yundong acted like the boss, playing games on the sofa.
Zhong Shengwan obediently went to the kitchen. In half an hour, he prepared three dishes and a soup—the kind that looked, smelled, and tasted great. Since he had already cooked a few meals at home, it was considered “out in the open.”
Using his skills normally now was no problem.
By this time, it was already dark.
Before Zhong Shengwan could start the meal, Chu Jinchen called him, sounding incredibly anxious: “Xiao Wan, come to the hospital! Quick!”
Chu Jinchen had brought Jiang Yu to see his grandfather, but he hadn’t expected that Jiang Yu and the old man wouldn’t get along. The old man got angry and had an episode; his head was hurting terribly.
Now he wouldn’t see anyone except Zhong Shengwan.
