- Chapter 5 - Escaping the Marriage
While presenting his gift, Jiang Sheng glanced toward Ning Xin. The moment he saw her, he was truly captivated. She was beautiful, and what man of the battlefield wouldn’t want a lovely woman by his side? Bai Lian was also pleased with Jiang Sheng’s gaze. She wholeheartedly hoped Ning Xin would win him over, so that if they ever needed the Jiang family’s help, Jiang Sheng would do his best.
However, just as their mutual satisfaction was about to intersect in the air, Ning Xin suddenly rolled her eyes and fell to the ground. As everyone was about to check on her, she suddenly sat up.
Everyone was instantly panicked. A few timid young women even shrieked.
Jiang Sheng remained relatively calm. He took a moment to steady his heart before asking, “Is this young lady ill? I’ll go get a physician!”
Ning Xin’s voice trembled as she said, “I am the ancestor of the Ning family. This woman’s destiny concerns our fate in the underworld. She must not marry!”
After speaking, Ning Xin rolled her eyes again, fell back to the ground, and then woke up with a bewildered look.
Many people were already too scared to watch, and although talk of ghosts and gods was ethereal, people were instinctively afraid, and their truth was hard to discern.
Bai Lian was also a little frightened. She looked at Ning Xin and felt like this person was different from her daughter. “You—who are you? What do you want?!”
“Mother, what are you talking about? I’m your daughter, Ning Xin.”
Ning Xin’s voice had returned to normal, as if she was completely unaware of what had just happened.
“Did the young lady not know what just happened?”
Jiang Sheng wasn’t particularly afraid, but he had developed a deep aversion to the situation. He didn’t believe in ghosts or gods, but he also couldn’t marry a woman who had such a “fit.”
“What happened just now?”
Ning Xin looked at Jiang Sheng, full of confusion. She didn’t have much confidence in her acting, but she had to see the performance through to the end, no matter what.
Shen Qingzhi watched Ning Xin from the side, a strange feeling lingering in her heart. She knew that after this, Ning Xin wouldn’t just fail to marry into a good family, she might not be able to get married at all. Yet, she had done it without hesitation. Why? If she hated the idea of marriage so much, why did she frame Shen Qingzhi for it in the first place? “Mother, I’ll go get a physician to come take a look.”
Jiang Sheng had no intention of marrying Ning Xin anymore and didn’t want his family to be seen as cruel, so he proactively offered to get a physician.
Ye Ningyan naturally agreed. She was scared. The men in her family went to war. How could she bring home an “unlucky” daughter-in-law like that? The physician arrived quickly and, after checking Ning Xin’s pulse, furrowed his brow. “This young lady seems to have a weak constitution. Let me write a prescription; perhaps it can help her recover.”
“Thank you.”
Ye Ningyan was very satisfied with the physician’s diagnosis. This Ning Xin was not only possessed but also in poor health, so it was only right that her family refused the marriage. She figured they wouldn’t be criticized, and her son could find someone better in the future.
Ning Xin was also satisfied with this outcome. In her current situation, she wouldn’t have to worry about Bai Lian trying to marry her off for a long time. Even if Bai Lian wanted to, no one would dare to marry her.
The banquet naturally ended unpleasantly. Normally, Bai Lian would have thrown a tantrum, but when Ning Xin was “possessed,” she had identified herself as a Ning family ancestor. Bai Lian didn’t want to offend her ancestor; she was counting on her ancestors to bless her son with a promising career.
Two days later, Ning Xin, following Shen Qingzhi’s advice, went to Bai Lian to ask to leave the family.
“You say you want to leave?”
“I’ve already heard what happened the other day, Mother. With my reputation now, if I stay here, I’m afraid it won’t just affect the women of the household, but Father and my brother as well…” Ning Xin left the sentence unfinished, trusting that Bai Lian would imagine the rest.
Her husband and son were Bai Lian’s life. Hearing this, she was moved. “If that’s the case, I’ll arrange for you to stay at the estate outside the city tomorrow. We’ll tell everyone you’ve gone there to recover from an illness.”
“Thank you for your understanding, Mother. After I leave, I will pray to the ancestors every day to bless my brother with a great future.”
“That is good.”
After Bai Lian agreed, Ning Xin really wanted to go and share the good news with Shen Qingzhi, but she was afraid Bai Lian might connect the dots. Although Bai Lian couldn’t pose a threat to the female protagonist, Ning Xin couldn’t cause her any unnecessary trouble. She was her golden ticket. Once she was truly free, she would have plenty of time to find Shen Qingzhi.
By the time Shen Qingzhi got the news, Ning Xin was already on her way. Bai Lian was somewhat compassionate and gave her a good amount of silver, and even let her keep the carriage.
In the carriage, Ning Xin was studying embroidery. Using the body’s memories, she could embroider some patterns, but she wasn’t the original owner. Even with the muscle memory, something was still a bit off. She had wanted to embroider a magnificent gift for someone, but it seemed she didn’t have the talent for it, and it probably wouldn’t be presentable.
Later that evening, Ning Xin finally arrived at the estate outside the city. The steward of the estate and the servants were waiting at the gate for her.
After some time getting used to it, Ning Xin was accustomed to both bowing to others and having others bow to her. She waved her hand and said, “I am tired today. You all should rest early.”
“Yes, Miss.”
After everyone had dispersed, Ning Xin took out the half-finished product she had been working on for the past few days. Since she had started it, she might as well finish it. Even if she couldn’t give it as a gift, she could use it herself. She had used excellent materials.
Just as Ning Xin was about to continue, a sound came from the window. She turned around and was startled by the sudden appearance of Shen Qingzhi. If Shen Qingzhi hadn’t covered her mouth, she would have definitely screamed.
Shen Qingzhi whispered, “I’ll let go, don’t scream.”
Ning Xin nodded furiously, finally regaining her freedom. She remembered that Shen Qingzhi was a martial artist in the book, but it never said she would jump through windows. “Sister, why are you here?”
Aside from being startled at first, Ning Xin showed no other signs of surprise, which surprised Shen Qingzhi. Only a few people knew she had martial arts skills, so why was Ning Xin so calm? “Sister Shen?”
“I came to see if you are satisfied with the result.”
“Satisfied, more than satisfied! Although it’s not as luxurious as home, it’s enough for me. I wanted to find an opportunity to thank you, but I didn’t expect you to come to me first.”
As Ning Xin spoke, she pulled Shen Qingzhi to a nearby chair.
Shen Qingzhi was trying to figure out how to explain that she had secretly come out of curiosity to see Ning Xin. She turned and saw Ning Xin’s “works” on the table. Her gaze was naturally drawn to them, and she found a way to change the subject. “Did you embroider all those?”
