- Chapter 36 - Finally Meeting
Shen Qingzhi was an even better horseback rider than before, so she arrived at Ning Xin’s new manor before nightfall. She had just learned that Ning Xin had moved.
The moment Ning Xin saw Shen Qingzhi, time seemed to stand still. Shen Qingzhi was dressed in a sleek and beautiful riding outfit, with her hair tied up in a neat bun. Ning Xin couldn’t take her eyes off her.
Shen Qingzhi handed the horse to a servant and then ran quickly toward Ning Xin.
As Ning Xin stood up, she was enveloped in a warm hug.
Shen Qingzhi held the back of Ning Xin’s head and said, “I missed you so much. Let’s go inside and talk.”
“Okay.”
The two of them went into Ning Xin’s room and closed the door. Everyone in the manor was a trusted person and was accustomed to their closeness, so they didn’t think anything of it. It was only natural for good friends who hadn’t seen each other in a while to have a private chat.
Once inside, Shen Qingzhi hugged Ning Xin again, and Ning Xin hugged her back.
“Have you missed me during this time?” Shen Qingzhi asked, feeling full of warmth as she took in Ning Xin’s presence and scent.
Ning Xin felt the same. Her heart, which had been empty for so long, was now full again. “I missed you a lot, so much that I couldn’t eat or sleep.”
“I have a long holiday, so I can stay with you for a while.”
“That’s great! Let’s eat first. You must have rushed here and haven’t had a chance to eat anything on the way.”
“Not only did I not eat, I haven’t even had a sip of water.”
“Then I’ll get you some water.”
Ning Xin tried to move, but Shen Qingzhi didn’t want to let go, so it turned into Ning Xin getting the water while Shen Qingzhi hugged her from behind.
Ning Xin laughed helplessly, “What are you doing? Let go.”
“I don’t want to let go. How about you feed me the water?”
“Alright.”
Ning Xin smiled, took a sip of water, and turned to kiss Shen Qingzhi.
Shen Qingzhi couldn’t handle that. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to kiss her, but she didn’t think the time was right. She let go of Ning Xin and sat down to drink the water. “You’re not afraid of me at all, are you?”
Ning Xin swallowed the water. “What’s there to be afraid of? Even when you used to be annoyed with me, you never did anything, and you definitely won’t now.”
“Don’t think too highly of me.”
Shen Qingzhi never thought of herself as a good person, not even to Ning Xin. If Ning Xin hadn’t changed, she wouldn’t have… “You are good. Anyone who says you’re not is the one with the problem.”
Ning Xin leaned in and gave Shen Qingzhi a light peck on the cheek.
Shen Qingzhi pulled Ning Xin onto her lap. “Your courage is getting bigger. Are you really not afraid of me?”
“I am afraid,” Ning Xin said. “I’m afraid you won’t like me.”
“How could that be?”
Shen Qingzhi buried her head in Ning Xin’s neck and held her without saying anything more.
Ning Xin stopped teasing her. In this moment, they just wanted to quietly be with each other. It wasn’t until someone knocked on the door to announce that dinner was ready that Ning Xin hurriedly got off Shen Qingzhi’s lap and turned away to let the food be brought in.
Shen Qingzhi hadn’t had enough of the embrace, but she needed to eat, or her stomach would start growling.
After the servants left, it was just the two of them. Ning Xin picked up her chopsticks, put a piece of fish on Shen Qingzhi’s plate, and said, “You haven’t had this in a long time, have you? Try it, it’s delicious.”
“Okay.”
Shen Qingzhi obediently ate the fish, which was indeed fresh and tasty.
Seeing that Shen Qingzhi liked it, Ning Xin continued to pick out the fish meat for her. She loved the feeling of taking care of Shen Qingzhi and didn’t want to be the one who was always looked after.
Shen Qingzhi saw how happy Ning Xin was and didn’t say anything. Next time, she would peel the shrimp for Ning Xin. Care was a two-way street, and she was confident they could continue their journey together.
After dinner, Ning Xin took Shen Qingzhi on a tour of her new manor. Shen Qingzhi looked at Ning Xin with a gentle expression and responded to everything she said.
After a long walk, they returned to the room. Ning Xin had previously prepared a separate room for Shen Qingzhi, but Shen Qingzhi never used it. This time, Ning Xin didn’t even bother; she had intended to share a room with her from the beginning.
After they bathed, they lay on the bed, each with a faint, clean scent.
Ning Xin held Shen Qingzhi’s hand. “I got a lot of good scar-fading medicine. How about I apply it for you?”
They hadn’t bathed together, so Ning Xin didn’t know how many scars Shen Qingzhi had.
Shen Qingzhi was afraid that Ning Xin would be scared, but she couldn’t refuse. Ning Xin would see her scars sooner or later. “Just promise me you won’t cry when you see them.”
“Don’t worry, I’m very strong. I won’t cry easily.”
“Alright then.”
Shen Qingzhi sat up and untied her inner garment.
The scars on Shen Qingzhi’s back were even more numerous than the last time Ning Xin saw them. Ning Xin’s eyes immediately welled up. She didn’t want to cry, but sometimes, you just couldn’t control your emotions.
“You promised you wouldn’t cry. It doesn’t hurt anymore.”
“It may not hurt now, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt then.”
Ning Xin said, getting the scar cream from the window and beginning to apply it to Shen Qingzhi.
Shen Qingzhi felt a cool sensation and unconsciously hugged her shoulders. “It didn’t hurt then either, really.”
Every time she went to war, she would be in a frenzied, bloodthirsty state. Shen Qingzhi truly didn’t feel the pain, but she couldn’t tell Ning Xin that. If she did, Ning Xin would only feel more heartbroken.
Ning Xin just thought Shen Qingzhi was trying to comfort her and applied the medicine even more carefully. Once she finished with her back, she had to move to the front. She felt a little nervous and gripped the medicine bottle tightly. “Turn around, and I’ll apply it to the front.”
“I’ll do the front myself. Give me the medicine.”
Shen Qingzhi held out a hand.
Ning Xin placed the medicine bottle in Shen Qingzhi’s hand and let out a sigh of relief. “Be careful. You don’t need to put on too much. This works slowly over time.”
“Okay.”
Shen Qingzhi was also nervous. Ning Xin applying the medicine to her back had already made her tense, and she couldn’t handle having her apply it to her front.
Shen Qingzhi’s own movements were much rougher than Ning Xin’s. She quickly applied the cream and handed the bottle back to Ning Xin.
Ning Xin looked at Shen Qingzhi, feeling an indescribable emotion. Shen Qingzhi was a true general now, and going to the battlefield again was inevitable. As long as she went to war, she would get hurt. What could she do to protect Shen Qingzhi? Shen Qingzhi was unaware of Ning Xin’s thoughts. When the cream on her skin had dried a little, she put on her inner garment and lay down, patting her arm.
Ning Xin understood and lay her head on Shen Qingzhi’s arm. “Sister…”
“In this moment, in this atmosphere, calling me that, are you forcing me to do something inappropriate?”
Shen Qingzhi said, and with her other hand, she gently stroked Ning Xin’s face.
Ning Xin was immediately affected. She had just been feeling heartbroken for Shen Qingzhi and had just realized that her words sounded a little ambiguous. And now Shen Qingzhi was teasing her back.
