- Chapter 34 - Going Home and Being a Brat
Ning Xin really wanted to go and see Shen Qingzhi again, but she simply couldn’t find the time. With the new year approaching, even though no one from her family would go to her, if a steward were to show up to deliver things and she wasn’t there, her absence would easily expose her. Moreover, Li Niang and the others had been out with her for so long and also wanted to go home and spend the new year with their families.
And so, the group set off once more, traveling light and fast back to the manor outside the capital.
They made the journey without delay, arriving back on the twenty-second day of the twelfth lunar month. Early on the twenty-third, the Ning family really did send people to pick Ning Xin up to go home for the new year.
Ning Xin didn’t want to go back at all, but she didn’t want the things at the manor to be discovered, so she had no choice but to return with the Ning family’s people. She secretly decided that the next time she left the Ning family, she would move her base of operations. The Ning family’s manor was a little too close for comfort.
It was only when the new year was close that Bai Lian remembered her daughter. Although her daughter was now a non-factor, if she didn’t even bring her home for the new year, it would damage her reputation, so she still sent for Ning Xin.
Ning Xin had put on a bit of weight under Li Niang’s care, but the rush back made her thinner and darker again, giving her the appearance of someone who had a difficult time at the manor.
When Bai Lian saw Ning Xin, she was stunned for a moment before forcing out a few tears. “Oh, my poor child, you must have suffered so much out there alone! Come here and let your mother look at you.”
Ning Xin walked awkwardly to Bai Lian’s side. “Mother, don’t worry, I’m doing well.”
Just as the two were about to put on a feigned show of affection, Ning Wang’s arrival shattered the awkward moment.
“Mom, is that my sister? Why did she get so ugly? She was already unmarriageable, but now there’s even less hope for her.”
Ning Wang had gotten even fatter since they last parted, and at such a young age, he already exuded a greasy aura.
Ning Xin endured her disgust and looked at Ning Wang, thinking to herself, You’re the ugly one. I’m so good-looking, you don’t even know, hmph! But Bai Lian went along with Ning Wang’s words. “We weren’t counting on her anyway. Don’t worry, your mother will secure a good future for you. Just focus on your studies.”
“It’s almost the new year, and all you talk about is studying. I’m so tired I could die. Mom, if you don’t want me to die of exhaustion, please don’t mention studying and just let me rest for a few days.”
“Alright, alright, then you can rest for a few days. You can start studying again on the third day of the new year.”
“Okay.”
Ning Xin watched Bai Lian and Ning Wang talk on the side. She really didn’t know where Ning Wang’s blind confidence came from. With such a fool, even if he studied every day, he wouldn’t pass the imperial exam, let alone with his on-again, off-again efforts. If he could pass, the sun would have to rise from the west.
That evening, after Ning Kaiyuan came home, the family had a meal together, and Ning Xin returned to her room. Her room was the same as before, but since no one had lived in it or cleaned it for a long time, it was covered in dust. Ning Xin had to call for servants to come and clean it and change the bedding.
As the servants cleaned Ning Xin’s room, they looked disgruntled. But they had no choice; no matter what, Ning Xin was still a young miss, and they, as servants, had to obey.
Once the room was clean, Ning Xin finally bathed, changed, and lay down on the bed to rest. Although the new bedding wasn’t as good as the one at her manor, it was at least clean and smelled of her own soap, making it quite comfortable to lie on.
Ning Xin was truly exhausted from the long journey, so she fell asleep quickly.
Bai Lian had originally thought that once the fuss over Ning Xin’s situation died down, she might be able to find her another marriage match. But now, it seemed Ning Xin was truly a lost cause. Her change in appearance was one thing, but her demeanor was also different from before. Who among the noble families would accept her petty and common manner? It would be better to just let her stay at the manor.
To make an even worse impression on Bai Lian, Ning Xin simply refused to get up. She slept in until the sun was high in the sky and ordered a large amount of delicious food, complaining that she couldn’t get anything to eat at the manor and was starving. By the time she finally finished eating and went to greet Bai Lian, it was already noon.
Bai Lian didn’t want to get angry during the new year, so she endured it all. In her heart, she just wanted to send Ning Xin away as soon as the holiday was over, thinking that “out of sight, out of mind” was better for her.
Ning Xin didn’t care about her image with these people, so for the next few days, she simply ate, drank, and slept in, acting completely without manners. In just a few days, she had gained a little weight and gotten a little fairer.
Ning Xin was very pleased when she looked in the mirror. She had become prettier, and she could surprise Shen Qingzhi when she returned.
Ning Xin didn’t feel much of a new year’s spirit. She joined the family for the new year’s eve dinner, paid her respects, received a red envelope, and then went back to bed. Anyway, Bai Lian would send her back on the first day of the new year, so she didn’t have to bother with too much.
In contrast, Shen Qingzhi’s new year was much livelier. Although they were celebrating away from home, everyone gathered, ate roasted meat, and talked about their ideals. It was a wonderful time. If not for the military camp’s no-alcohol rule, Shen Qingzhi would have loved to have a drink with everyone.
After midnight, Shen Qingzhi returned to her tent and carefully held Ning Xin’s pouch in her hand. She missed Ning Xin very much, and so, after the new year, she would launch an even more ferocious attack, striving to end the war and go home as soon as possible.
After the new year, Ning Xin made a considerable amount of money. She decided to buy a plot of land near the manor. With the help of Shen Qingzhi’s people, she bought the land very smoothly, though it was not easy to register it under her own name. So, she simply registered it under Zhang Ran’s name.
Zhang Ran was overwhelmed by the honor. “Miss, is this appropriate?”
“What’s inappropriate about it? It’s just a plot of land. If I ever go back to the capital, this land will be yours. I’ll buy another plot next to it for Li Si. As long as you two work hard with me, there will only be more benefits in the future.”
Ning Xin didn’t care who owned the two plots of land. After all, she didn’t necessarily have to settle down anywhere in particular. As long as she had money, she had nothing to worry about.
Hearing Ning Xin say this, Zhang Ran no longer declined. “Then I will tell Li Si the good news right away.”
“Do as you please. I’ll buy the plot next to it soon, but before that, we need to build a good house here. I do enjoy my comforts.”
“Understood, Miss. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of all the arrangements!”
“Good, you can go now. I trust you’ll do a good job.”
Ning Xin had complete trust in the people Shen Qingzhi had sent to her. Even if they weren’t completely loyal to her, they were completely loyal to Shen Qingzhi, and for the two of them, their loyalties were one and the same.
Everything on the new property had to be redone, especially Ning Xin’s house, which was a huge project. Fortunately, Zhang Ran and Li Si were efficient workers and everything was well-organized. In just two months, the manor took on a brand new look.
