- Chapter 2 - Restoring the Heroine's Innocence
As soon as she said this, the main hall instantly fell silent. At this moment, it was so quiet you could probably hear a pin drop.
“Xin’er, did she force you? Don’t be afraid. We’re in the Prime Minister’s residence; someone will stand up for us.”
The beautiful woman glared at Shen Qingzhi, her eyes filled with malice.
Ning Xin ignored her mother’s gaze and continued, “Before, I was consumed by jealousy. I thought Shen Qingzhi was too beautiful, so I lied. Now that I have a second chance at life, I’ve had time to think. That jealousy and envy were truly wrong. They harm both others and myself; it was my fault.”
“Shen Qingzhi suffered innocently. I don’t know how I can ever repay her. I ask all of you, ladies and elders, to believe what I am saying now and set Shen Qingzhi free.”
After she finished speaking, Ning Xin knelt down and kowtowed. Even though she wasn’t used to it, she had no other choice. Those people needed a grander gesture, and only she could provide it.
Shen Qingzhi thought Ning Xin had some other sinister plot to harm her and was mentally preparing how to fight back. But now, Ning Xin had gone this far to clear her name. Why had she framed her in the first place? Shen Qingzhi hadn’t figured it out yet, but she was acquitted of the crime.
In front of everyone, Ning Xin stood up and bowed to Shen Qingzhi again, apologizing. “Sister Shen, it was my fault for wronging you. Please, can you forgive me this time, seeing that I didn’t cause a greater disaster?”
With so many people watching, Shen Qingzhi couldn’t very well say no. “It’s a good thing that you can admit your mistake and change, little sister. I don’t blame you.”
“Thank you, sister.”
With the two main parties reconciling, the others naturally stopped prying. A major drama had ended before it even began.
Many people were indifferent to this outcome, while a few were very displeased. They had been looking forward to seeing Ning Xin and Shen Qingzhi battle it out. How could it be any fun if they made up without a fight? Ning Xin had no time to worry about what those people thought. To her, the heroine was the most important person in this world. “Sister Shen, could you help me get back?”
“Of course.”
Shen Qingzhi wanted to see if Ning Xin had any other tricks up her sleeve.
There were no tricks. Ning Xin had just recovered from a serious illness and was genuinely weak, so she needed help.
Back in her room, Ning Xin finally relaxed a little as she sat on the bed. “I’ve restored your innocence, sister. Do you still blame me?”
“You did restore my innocence, but I was innocent to begin with. Because of you, I was locked in the woodshed for two days. Do you think I should forgive you?”
Shen Qingzhi’s words left Ning Xin speechless. The heroine wasn’t a saint, so it was impossible for her to be swayed by a few words. However, this did give Ning Xin a reason to get closer to her. “If you won’t forgive me, then I’ll just have to work hard to earn your forgiveness.”
“You…” Shen Qingzhi couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but she felt that something about Ning Xin was different.
Ning Xin was also afraid of saying too much and exposing herself, so she lay down on the bed. “I’m a little tired. I’ll rest now. I won’t see you out.”
“Okay.”
Not long after Shen Qingzhi left Ning Xin’s room, she was stopped by the Prime Minister’s son, Tan Yaoyang.
“Sister Qingzhi! Wait a moment!”
Upon seeing Tan Yaoyang, Shen Qingzhi’s brows furrowed. She quickly, though discreetly, adjusted her expression. “Is something wrong, Sir Tan?”
“We’ve known each other for so long. Why are you still so formal? Just call me Brother Tan.”
“I wouldn’t dare. If Sir Tan has something to say, please be direct.”
“Well… this time my family didn’t handle things well and wronged you. If you have any requests, you can tell me, and I’ll be sure to inform my mother.”
“I have no requests. Thank the Madam for me. I’ll be taking my leave.”
Shen Qingzhi tried to leave, but Tan Yaoyang grabbed her arm.
“Sister Qingzhi, you know I have feelings for you. Why are you so cold?”
“Thank you for your affection, sir, but I really must go home.”
Shen Qingzhi struggled to free herself from Tan Yaoyang’s grip and quickly left the Prime Minister’s residence. She shouldn’t have come to this place.
Ning Xin lay on her bed for a while before her mother came to see her.
Unlike before, her mother’s face was cold. “You useless thing, why did you clear Shen Qingzhi’s name? How are you supposed to marry Sir Tan now?”
“Huh?”
“I thought you would seize this opportunity, but you couldn’t even manage that. Hmph, I’m not getting involved in your marriage anymore!”
After her mother finished her tirade, she left the room. Ning Xin didn’t know the full truth, but she had a better understanding of some things now.
Why was there only one maid with her when she woke up? Why did her mother’s visit seem so formal and accompanied by an entourage? It was because the original host was not favored. Her mother didn’t care about her well-being; she only cared about whether she could marry the Prime Minister’s son.
Perhaps the stupid scheme she had set up before was even taught to her by her mother. It seemed that even though she was just a minor character mentioned in a few lines, the water was very deep.
But speaking of the Prime Minister’s son, he was a character she remembered more clearly. Tan Yaoyang, a typical mama’s boy, who only used his supposed affection for the heroine to cause her trouble and create more enemies. In the story, about a third of the way through, the Tan family would fall, and Tan Yaoyang would be written out.
Tan Yaoyang was arguably her least favorite male character.
Ning Xin didn’t have much time to think before she was told they were going home. With the help of her maid, she got into the sedan chair and returned to her home, the residence of the Minister of Revenue, Ning Kaiyuan.
Ning Kaiyuan was a third-rank official, so his mansion was naturally not as grand as the Prime Minister’s. However, Ning Xin was surprised to find that as the legitimate daughter, her own courtyard was even worse than the guest room she had in the Prime Minister’s residence.
It wasn’t until she saw everyone in the mansion that she finally understood why.
“Mother, is big sister going to marry into the Prime Minister’s residence?”
Ning Wang looked at Ning Xin and asked with a feigned innocence.
“She’s a disappointment and won’t be marrying into the Prime Minister’s residence.”
Bai Lian said this and even rolled her eyes at Ning Xin.
Ning Xin was speechless. She was also too lazy to bother with someone so thoroughly corrupted by patriarchal favoritism. Even in modern society, which was so much more advanced, such narrow-minded people still existed, let alone in the male-dominated world she was in now.
“Mother, I’m tired. I’ll go back to my room to rest.”
It was a waste of time to even eat with these people.
Bai Lian didn’t care if Ning Xin had eaten enough. She didn’t care if Ning Xin left; as long as her precious son was full, that was all that mattered.
Back in her own courtyard, Ning Xin began to assess her current situation. As a minor character, her survival was already difficult. Now, with a corrupt father, a clueless mother, and a younger brother who was clearly a future ingrate, she felt like she was being pulled down in every direction.
How on earth could she possibly cling to the heroine’s leg?
