- Chapter 15 - Someone's Getting Mad
Shen Qingzhi didn’t know what Ning Xin was planning. She thought Ning Xin would listen to her, because Ning Xin had always been very obedient and trusting of her.
That night, the two of them lay in bed together. Ning Xin fell asleep early as usual, while Shen Qingzhi stared at her, unable to fall asleep for a long time. Just as dawn was breaking, she left.
Ning Xin woke up in the morning and, not seeing Shen Qingzhi, simply packed her things and went out with her people. Shen Qingzhi had found her a few bodyguards with some skill; Ning Xin took two of them. In addition, she had Li Niang, who attended to her every need.
In the carriage, Li Niang cautiously looked at Ning Xin and asked, “Miss, is it really okay for us to leave like this?”
“What’s not okay about it? Your miss is going to take you to make a fortune. Just stay by my side and you’ll be fine.”
“Yes, I’ll listen to you, Miss.”
The group passed through Lin’an City and went directly to Rui City, where they found a nice inn to stay.
Ning Xin lay on the bed in the inn, her back aching. She groaned inwardly, thinking, Having grand ambitions is a good thing, but it’s really tiring. I hope this trip is fruitful. And I hope Shen Qingzhi won’t be too angry when she finds out.
After resting for a day at the inn, Ning Xin took Li Niang and went out.
Rui City was very prosperous, with all sorts of things for sale on the streets and a wide variety of shops. Ning Xin looked around and decided to first expand her rouge and soap business. In addition, she needed to take over a few rice shops. This was the only way to legitimately hoard rice.
Ning Xin acted on her ideas immediately. She first went to a more secluded part of the city and bought a courtyard. Then she began hiring workers.
Hiring workers here was different from the estate. The people on the estate were more trustworthy. Here, in an unfamiliar place, she had to be extra careful.
Ten days later, when Shen Qingzhi went to the estate to look for Ning Xin, she was told that Ning Xin had already left. She immediately summoned the two managers and demanded, “Ning Xin left. Why didn’t you tell me?!”
“Miss said not to tell you, because she was afraid you’d get angry.”
Zhang Ran had been with Shen Qingzhi for many years and knew her temper well, so he was very scared at the moment.
A nameless rage was indeed burning inside Shen Qingzhi. “She told you not to tell me, and you didn’t?! Who is your real master?!”
Shen Qingzhi slammed her hand on the table, and the two managers immediately knelt down. Li Si said, “You told us that since we came here, we should listen to Miss. We… we didn’t dare to disobey your orders.”
Li Si was also very frightened. Although they had initially been resentful of being transferred to this godforsaken place, after a period of time, they had all found Ning Xin to be a good master. So now they were very obedient to her. They had always seen their original master (Shen Qingzhi) being so accommodating to Miss Ning Xin. Who knew their original master would suddenly get angry? Waaah, he was so pitiful…
“You certainly know what to say. I’ll deal with you when she gets back.”
After saying this, Shen Qingzhi waved her hand, telling them to leave. She then sat in Ning Xin’s room, sulking.
It seemed that the harmless little rabbit act Ning Xin had put on for her all this time was just that—an act. That girl was incredibly bold; she dared to go out and start a business on her own. Did she have any idea how treacherous the world outside was? What if she got bullied? Thinking of all the ways Ning Xin could be bullied, Shen Qingzhi felt a little restless. But she couldn’t do anything. Not only did she have no idea where Ning Xin was, even if she did, she couldn’t just go and find her recklessly. If she left, she would face things that were beyond her imagination.
It was infuriating. Ning Xin had run off, and all she could do was stay here and get angry. She couldn’t do anything else.
Never before had Shen Qingzhi yearned for power as much as she did now. If she had power, she could abandon everything and go find Ning Xin without any hesitation.
Shen Qingzhi didn’t stay the night; she rushed back to the Imperial City. If a struggle was needed, then so be it. Before, she hadn’t cared and didn’t want to fight for anything. But now it was different. Now she wanted to fight. She wanted to stand at the pinnacle of power.
Ning Xin had by now hired enough workers. She had originally wanted to hire both men and women, but once she started, she realized how childishly naive that idea was. This wasn’t the modern world, nor was it an estate where she could do as she pleased. Hiring men and women to work together would be an invitation for people to gossip and condemn them.
So, in a fit of frustration, Ning Xin decided to hire only women. The women who did farm work here were also strong. She didn’t need many, just twenty people in total, and she quickly filled the positions.
With the workers, she could start the business, but what was more important now was that she needed a manager. Here, literate women were usually from wealthy families and would never work as laborers. But her manager had to be literate and good with numbers. Finding such a person was proving to be a bit difficult.
Li Niang, seeing Ning Xin so exhausted, felt a little heartbroken. “Miss, why are you working so hard? We are just women, and we are destined to get married.”
“Get married? Why must I get married? I won’t die if I don’t get married. But if I do get married, that’s not for certain.”
Ning Xin had no desire to die in a family feud; such a life was simply too terrifying for her.
Li Niang didn’t understand Ning Xin’s thoughts. She just said, “Marriage between men and women is a matter of course. Miss, you’re imagining marriage to be too scary. Getting married won’t be a big deal. With your cleverness, you’ll surely do very well even after getting married.”
“Enough, Li Niang. Let’s not talk about this anymore. Go and rest early.”
“Yes, Miss.”
Li Niang was startled when Ning Xin’s expression turned cold. Ning Xin was usually so kind to them and didn’t put on airs. After a while, they had inexplicably started treating Ning Xin like their own younger relative. But Ning Xin wasn’t a younger relative; she was their master. How could she, a servant, presume to advise her master? She had spoken out of turn.
Ning Xin didn’t think much of it and wasn’t angry. She just felt that if they couldn’t agree, there was no need to say too much. Li Niang’s perspective wasn’t wrong, and neither was hers. Since they couldn’t convince each other, there was no point in continuing the conversation.
Now, the most important thing was to find a manager. This task was weighing on Ning Xin, making it hard for her to sleep. So she went downstairs to relax, eat something, and listen to some gossip.
The first floor of the inn was for dining and drinking. Ning Xin chose a corner table, ordered a few small dishes, and prepared to eat slowly by herself.
Not long after she sat down, a woman walked up to her. “Excuse me, are you Miss Ning?”
Ning Xin looked up and saw a woman who looked to be around thirty. She nodded and said, “I am. Do you need something? Please, have a seat.”
