- Chapter 3 - This Protagonist Is Hard to Win Over
Tang Suan’s brow furrowed deeply, her inner disgust surging like a stormy sea. Her grip loosened, and she prepared to drop Shen Chou to the ground.
Terrified, Shen Chou immediately clung tightly to Tang Suan’s neck, wrapping herself around her like an octopus.
“Please, don’t abandon me…” Shen Chou pleaded desperately.
Tang Suan remained unmoved by Shen Chou’s pleas, not even pausing to consider how the proud and haughty Shen Chou could ever beg her. She pried at Shen Chou’s hands, trying to pull her off.
“Congratulations, Host, on completing your first mission: Initial Encounter with the Protagonist!” The System’s voice echoed in her mind.
“Congratulations for what?” Shen Chou wailed, tears streaming down her face.
“The Protagonist is about to throw me to the ground! Instead of congratulating me, think of a way to save me!”
The System paused before replying, “Why don’t you try begging the Protagonist again?”
“Beg? Didn’t you see how she’s treating me?” Shen Chou cried, her face crumpled in despair.
Before she could finish speaking, a thump echoed as Tang Suan successfully tossed Shen Chou to the ground. The impact sent Shen Chou sprawling, clutching her bruised rear and howling in pain.
“That hurts so much! How could you be so cruel?” Shen Chou accused Tang Suan, her eyes brimming with tears.
Tang Suan completely ignored her, casting her a cold glance before turning to leave.
For some reason, she harbored an intense loathing for Shen Chou. Fragments of Shen Chou torturing her often flashed through her mind. Every nightmare featured Shen Chou, leaving her with a visceral discomfort whenever she saw her.
And then there was Li Changsheng. Whenever he smiled warmly and whispered sweet nothings, Tang Suan found his face utterly repulsive, a mask of nauseating hypocrisy.
Yet despite this, an inner voice relentlessly reminded her: Never let Li Changsheng suspect a thing. To maintain the facade, she had to feign her former bashful demeanor and feigned inner joy.
The mere thought of this made Tang Suan’s stomach churn. Not to mention the recent weeks when she had witnessed Li Changsheng and Shen Chou’s frequent, intimate interactions.
Afterward, Li Changsheng had insisted there was nothing between him and Shen Chou, but Tang Suan knew he was lying.
“Don’t leave!” Seeing Tang Suan about to walk away, Shen Chou ignored her pain and scrambled to her feet, grabbing Tang Suan’s arm.
“Let go!” Tang Suan snapped.
“I won’t!” Shen Chou retorted, digging in her heels.
Without hesitation, Tang Suan yanked her sleeve free. Shen Chou stumbled backward, letting out a terrified shriek as she squeezed her eyes shut. Her body’s instinctive reaction caused her to lurch forward, collapsing onto Tang Suan.
Both women tumbled to the ground, with Shen Chou landing on top of Tang Suan. Her hand remained clamped tightly around Tang Suan’s wrist, the grip so painful it made Tang Suan wince.
Shen Chou’s head swam. Clutching her head, her vision blurred, she struggled to stand up, forgetting Tang Suan lay beneath her. In her haste, she accidentally tugged on Tang Suan’s flesh, causing Tang Suan to gasp sharply in pain.
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to…” Shen Chou stammered, finally realizing Tang Suan was still pinned beneath her. She scrambled to apologize, her movements clumsy and panicked.
Tang Suan remained unmoved, glaring fiercely at Shen Chou. As her gaze shifted, landing on Shen Chou’s half-sprawled form still pressed against her, her face darkened further.
“Shen Chou, you… you lecherous scoundrel!” Tang Suan hissed through gritted teeth, her voice dripping with venom, as if she wanted to flay Shen Chou alive.
“Huh?” Shen Chou’s face twisted in confusion as Tang Suan cursed at her. She had no idea what she’d done to provoke such a furious reaction.
Sensing something was amiss, Shen Chou slowly lowered her gaze. When she realized what her hand had landed on, she froze in shock, as if struck by lightning on a clear day.
She let out a sharp cry, covering her face as her neck, cheeks, and ears flushed crimson. Her words came out in a stammer.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to, I didn’t know that was your…” She nearly blurted it out before clamping a hand over her mouth.
Tang Suan’s face darkened to an even deeper shade of black.
She shoved Shen Chou aside, stood up, straightened her disheveled clothes, and strode away without looking back, retracing her steps.
Shen Chou stood rooted to the spot, staring after Tang Suan’s retreating figure. Suddenly, the scene felt eerily familiar. She slapped her forehead, instantly recalling where she’d seen this exact sequence of events before. It was a cliché straight out of those cheesy domestic Mary Sue idol dramas she’d watched!
The Protagonist climbs a wall to meet the Male Lead, only for him to pass by at that exact moment. She falls right into his arms. The tumbling Protagonist and Male Lead spin around, ending up in a tight embrace, and accidentally kiss. The resemblance was practically one hundred percent!
The only difference was that the couple was male and female, while both she and Tang Suan were women.
Shen Chou suddenly felt uneasy. Had she picked up the wrong script? Was she here not just to save the Protagonist and change the ending, but also to fall in love with her and engage in a yuri relationship? That couldn’t be right. She didn’t feel romantic love for the Protagonist, only the affection one might have for a fictional character.
“Ugh…” Shen Chou covered her mouth with her hand. She remembered accidentally brushing her lips against the Protagonist’s earlier. If she wasn’t mistaken, that must have been the Protagonist’s first kiss. She wondered how the scummy male lead would react when he learned his future Empress had her first kiss stolen by her first love. Would he try to kill her?
“Host, if you don’t chase after the Protagonist now, you’ll never see her again,” the System’s voice echoed in her mind, snapping Shen Chou back to reality.
The System’s reminder jolted her into action. She remembered she still had a mission to complete.
Shen Chou glanced around. Tang Suan was nowhere to be seen.
Damn it! Shen Chou cursed inwardly. She quickly gathered her skirt and sprinted after Tang Suan.
Fortunately, Tang Suan hadn’t gone far, and Shen Chou soon caught up with her.
Shen Chou hurried after Tang Suan, trailing behind her and explaining as they walked, “Tang Suan, please listen to me. I really didn’t mean to…”
“If the Ning’an Commandery Princess hates me so much that she wants to torment me, she should just come at me directly. Why resort to such underhanded tactics?” Tang Suan quickened her pace.
This is it, Shen Chou thought, now I’m truly beyond redemption.
Still, Shen Chou refused to give up. She grabbed Tang Suan’s hand, determined to continue explaining.
Tang Suan glanced down at their joined hands, veins bulging on her forehead. She wanted to yank her hand away, but remembering the earlier accident, she reluctantly refrained.
She stopped walking and turned to Shen Chou. “Are you ever going to stop?”
“I’m sorry, I really didn’t mean to. Please, just listen to me…” Shen Chou’s eyes glistened with tears, her pitiful expression tugging at the heartstrings. This tactic had been taught to her by the System—to act pitiful, hoping it might soften Tang Suan’s attitude.
Tang Suan glanced at her without a word. After a moment, she turned to Lian’er. “You can go back now. The Ning’an Commandery Princess and I have a few words to exchange.”
“This…” Lian’er glanced at her mistress, then at Shen Chou, who was clinging to her like a leech. Her expression wavered. After a moment of internal struggle, she turned to leave, remembering to bid farewell to Tang Suan and Shen Chou before departing.
Shen Chou watched her go, feeling as if she had forgotten something important. It wasn’t until Lian’er’s face flashed in her mind that she realized she had completely forgotten about Lian’er.
Damn it, I forgot about Lian’er! That girl is still outside! Shen Chou cursed inwardly. Her face flushed with remorse. If anything happened to Lian’er, she would never forgive herself.
Lost in her own emotions, Shen Chou completely failed to notice Tang Suan scrutinizing her with a probing gaze. Only the System noticed. It manifested as a young girl within Shen Chou’s body, observing through her eyes. Tang Suan seemed to see her too, their eyes meeting. The System, terrified of being discovered, widened its eyes and vanished in a flash.
Suddenly, Tang Suan gripped Shen Chou’s wrist with her other hand, forcefully pinching her chin and forcing her to meet her gaze.
“What are you doing?” Completely caught off guard, Shen Chou panicked.
Tang Suan demanded, “You’re not Shen Chou, are you? Who are you really?”
“I am Shen Chou! I’m the real Shen Chou!” Shen Chou retorted instinctively while struggling. Then, she realized what Tang Suan was implying: Was she asking if she was the original Shen Chou?
She figured it out this quickly? Shen Chou was stunned. No wonder she’s the Protagonist—she’s too smart! She had assumed Tang Suan would be like those oblivious male leads in dramas who never realize the female lead is disguised as a man, failing to notice she was no longer the same Shen Chou. Yet, her cover had been blown the moment she met the Protagonist.
But the next moment, Tang Suan released her wrist.
“Huh?” Shen Chou was bewildered again, unsure why Tang Suan had let go. Tang Suan, however, seemed somewhat reluctant to end the encounter.
This is absurd! Tang Suan realized she had been frightened by her own thoughts. How could she have mistaken the Shen Chou before her for someone else?
Yet Shen Chou’s actions today were indeed a stark departure from her usual behavior. The Shen Chou Tang Suan knew would never have acted this way. Unless… the fall into the water had damaged her brain, causing her to come seeking… an apology?
At this thought, Tang Suan scoffed coldly and turned to Shen Chou. “You wanted to explain? To apologize? Fine, here’s your chance. I want to hear your explanation.”
Hearing Tang Suan’s words, Shen Chou, who had been inwardly anxious, secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Now relaxed, Shen Chou began to explain, delivering the carefully rehearsed words she had prepared to win over the Protagonist’s favor.
