- Chapter 10 - The Female Lead Doesn't Want to Be Replaced by Anyone
Xu Jinhui’s face twisted with rage as she gritted her teeth. “Tang Suan, I’m going to kill you!”
With that, she lunged to slap Shen Chou. But Shen Chou wasn’t about to let herself be bullied. The moment Xu Jinhui raised her hand, Shen Chou seized her wrist and shoved her backward, sending Xu Jinhui sprawling to the ground.
Xu Jinhui’s fall wouldn’t have been a problem, except for the group of adoring young ladies and gentlemen standing behind her. She landed squarely on top of them.
As if triggered by some chain reaction, Xu Jinhui’s backward tumble sent the people behind her tumbling down one after another like dominoes.
Watching this scene unfold, Shen Chou couldn’t contain her glee.
Remembering Tang Suan was still nearby, she immediately turned to comfort her. “Tang Suan, are you alright? Are you hurt anywhere?”
Tang Suan shook her head, indicating she was fine.
Seeing the two women’s closeness, Xu Jinhui’s hatred burned so fiercely her teeth ached. She coldly shoved away anyone who tried to help her up.
Finally, Xu Jinhui seized her chance. She sprang to her feet, yanked the hairpin from her hair, gripped it tightly, and lunged at Shen Chou.
“Shen Chou, I, Xu Jinhui, swear to be your sworn enemy from this day forward! Go die—”
As Xu Jinhui lunged forward, panic flashed across Tang Suan’s face.
She had been about to warn Shen Chou, but in the next instant, her expression shifted, her eyes turning cold and calculating. She subtly slipped out of Shen Chou’s embrace, tilting her body slightly to the side.
Now it seemed only Shen Chou would be stabbed by the hairpin.
Shen Chou, still unaware of what was happening, was about to turn around when Li Changsheng suddenly swept her into his arms, carrying her away.
“Ugh…” Li Changsheng groaned as the sharp hairpin pierced his shoulder. Blood gurgled from the wound, quickly staining his entire arm crimson.
In a panic, Shen Chou clapped a hand over her mouth and cried out, “Li Changsheng, you’re bleeding!”
“Mm,” Li Changsheng replied weakly, his face pale. He pressed a hand to his bleeding arm, glanced briefly at Tang Suan, then quickly averted his gaze, his brow furrowing slightly.
Tang Suan stood there, a sinister smile playing on her lips, her eyes icy as she stared intently at Shen Chou and Li Changsheng. After a few seconds, she clutched her head as if in pain, shook her head, and looked around with a bewildered expression.
What happened? What just happened? How did Li Changsheng get here? And why is he injured? Tang Suan tried to recall the events, but her mind drew a blank, leaving her feeling dizzy.
Seeing that she had stabbed Li Changsheng, Xu Jinhui shrieked, dropped the hairpin, and babbled incoherently, “It wasn’t me! It wasn’t me! I didn’t mean to! He rushed at me first…”
Li Changsheng raised his hand, accidentally aggravating his wound. Cold sweat broke out on his forehead, but he forced himself to endure the pain and said, “Oh, so according to you, I sought my own demise?”
“No, no!” Xu Jinhui shook her head frantically, begging for mercy. “Your Highness, please forgive me…”
He looked down at Xu Jinhui, who was clutching his leg, tears streaming down her face as she pleaded desperately. A wave of disgust washed over him.
Yet, remembering his purpose, Li Changsheng suppressed his revulsion and said, “I can overlook this incident. But what punishment should you face for bullying the legitimate daughter of the General’s Residence and insulting the Ning’an Commandery Princess?”
Xu Jinhui looked up at him, her face blank, as if she didn’t understand his words.
Li Changsheng patiently bent down, leaning close to her ear. “I believe you should apologize to them,” he whispered.
“What?” Xu Jinhui thought she’d misheard him. She pulled away from Li Changsheng, her voice dripping with resentment. “Apologize to that Tang Suan, that wretched woman? Never!”
Xu Jinhui would rather die than apologize to Shen Chou and Tang Suan!
But—
When she met Li Changsheng’s terrifying gaze, Xu Jinhui felt a chill run down her spine. She feared he would despise her for this. The thought of Li Changsheng hating her was more unbearable than death itself.
No, I can’t let him resent me.
Shen Chou, standing nearby, was equally stunned. Though she knew Li Changsheng had ulterior motives, she never expected him to go this far. From her understanding of him, he was always cautious and meticulous, never wasting any resource. She remembered him once saying that even trash had its uses.
Most importantly, in the original novel, Xu Jinhui was one of Li Changsheng’s harem members. It had to be said, though Li Changsheng was a scumbag, he was also the male lead, blessed with the “stallion” and “irresistible to women” attributes. Countless women loved him and were willing to die for him.
After Li Changsheng ascended the throne, he named the original protagonist Empress, Tang Suan Noble Consort, and Xu Jinhui Consort Hui. When the first two fell from grace, Xu Jinhui naturally rose to power, becoming the ultimate victor. Not only did she survive to the end, becoming Li Changsheng’s Empress, but her son was also named Crown Prince and smoothly ascended the throne as Emperor.
This was why Shen Chou was so shocked. By acting this way, Li Changsheng risked losing Xu Jinhui from his harem. After weighing all the pros and cons, Shen Chou once again felt that Li Changsheng’s sacrifice was too great.
However, if Li Changsheng losing a member of his harem meant the plot was finally beginning to deviate, then it was a good thing. Seeing everything moving in a positive direction, Shen Chou felt genuinely happy and resolved to thank Li Changsheng properly later.
Xu Jinhui shuffled toward Tang Suan and Shen Chou like a tortoise, grudgingly muttering, “I’m sorry…”
“Louder! Did you forget to eat? Who can hear such a weak apology?” Shen Chou suddenly snapped, startling Xu Jinhui.
Xu Jinhui glared at her resentfully, but Shen Chou crossed her arms and stared back, utterly unfazed. She wasn’t afraid of Xu Jinhui; this was exactly how you dealt with such villains!
“I’m going to make you so mad!” Shen Chou stuck her tongue out at Xu Jinhui and made a silly face. “What are you going to do about it?”
“You…” Xu Jinhui clenched her fists in fury, but she didn’t dare retaliate. After all, Shen Chou was the Ning’an Commandery Princess, personally appointed by the Emperor, and His Highness the Fifth Prince was watching nearby.
The thought that Li Changsheng had actually made her apologize for their sake, especially for Tang Suan, infuriated Xu Jinhui. In her eyes, Tang Suan was utterly unworthy of Li Changsheng. Yet the Fifth Prince had taken a liking to Tang Suan, and Xu Jinhui had witnessed them together on several occasions.
Each time, Xu Jinhui burned with jealousy. What she had desperately tried to obtain through every means possible, Tang Suan had effortlessly acquired. How could she not hate her? She hated her to the core!
“I’m sorry! I was wrong! Please forgive me!” Xu Jinhui shouted.
“That’s better. Why couldn’t you have done this sooner?” Shen Chou said. “Remember, next time you dare bully Tang Suan, it won’t be as simple as an apology.”
Shen Chou drew out her words, giving Xu Jinhui a meaningful look. She knew perfectly well that Xu Jinhui’s nature meant she would never let this go.
But Shen Chou was ready for anything. She would protect Tang Suan at all costs, without hesitation or fear.
As Xu Jinhui led her group away, she deliberately glanced back at Shen Chou, her expression seeming to say, Just you wait, I’ll be back!
Shen Chou sneered, her eyes filled with contempt. In response, she flipped Xu Jinhui the middle finger, making her meaning crystal clear: Xu Jinhui is trash.
Whether she caught Shen Chou’s scornful gaze or understood the gesture, Xu Jinhui’s face darkened further. With a cold huff, she quickened her pace, eager to leave before she lost control and tore Shen Chou to shreds.
Only after Xu Jinhui’s figure disappeared did Shen Chou clutch her chest and exhale deeply. Finally, she’s gone.
Suddenly remembering Li Changsheng’s injuries, Shen Chou rushed to his side, asking anxiously, “Li Changsheng, your wound looks serious. Let me take you to a doctor.”
Li Changsheng nodded weakly, his face pale.
Just as he was about to leave, Shen Chou called out again. He turned to look at her, his expression puzzled.
Shen Chou swiftly tore a strip of cloth from her own garment and bound it around Li Changsheng’s wound. Li Changsheng stared intently at her, leaving Shen Chou no choice but to explain, “I need to stop the bleeding first.”
“Thank you,” Li Changsheng said after she finished bandaging him.
“No need to thank me,” she replied. Then, quickly adding, “I should be thanking you. If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have been injured. Thank you for helping A-Suan and me out of that mess. So, after you see the doctor, I’m treating you to dinner.”
A-Suan? Li Changsheng thought. Have they become that close already?
He glanced at Tang Suan, who stood beside them with her head bowed, her expression hidden. He recalled Tang Suan’s face when Xu Jinhui had lunged at Shen Chou with her hairpin—a face twisted with hatred.
That Tang Suan was unrecognizable, like a completely different person. It had even stirred a strange fear in him. Has Tang Suan changed too?
“Hey, we should get going,” Shen Chou said, waving her hand in front of Li Changsheng’s face when he remained lost in thought. “What are you thinking about? You’re so spaced out! I called you several times, but you didn’t even hear me.”
“Nothing,” Li Changsheng said.
Shen Chou shrugged, spreading her hands in resignation. “Fine, if you don’t want to talk about it, I won’t pry. Come on, let’s get going.”
A moment later, Shen Chou was at Tang Suan’s side, who looked utterly dejected. She wrapped her arms around Tang Suan’s shoulders. “A-Suan, what’s wrong? I’ve noticed you’ve been so gloomy all day.”
Tang Suan shook her head silently.
“Ugh, why are you both acting like this?” Shen Chou groaned, rubbing her temples.
Hearing this, Tang Suan glanced at her and said, “I’m fine.”
Tang Suan was still reeling from what had just happened. She felt like she’d been possessed. She could clearly sense she’d lost control of her body, as if someone else had been puppeteering her words and actions. The realization terrified her.
What should I do? she wondered. Am I really being controlled? Is there another version of myself living inside me? But that person’s personality is the complete opposite of mine.
She didn’t want to be manipulated, didn’t want to be replaced. So what should she do? What should she do?
Is there anyone who can tell me?
